welcome back to innovation now tv in this video we are presenting a full documentary of building the world's longest suspension bridge that connects asia and europe please stay tuned and enjoy the video the 1915 china kalei bridge the world's longest suspension bridge that connects asia and europe the turkish government built the world's longest suspension bridge with a distance of two thousand and twenty three meters between main towers in chanakalay to commemorate 2023 the 100th anniversary of the founding of the republic [Music] connecting turkey's european and asian shores the 1915 chanakalay bridge was built by turkish and south korean firms with an investment of 2.5 billion euros about 2.8 billion dollars the suspension bridge a structure that pulls and supports the bridge deck with a cable installed between the main towers is the most difficult structure in construction and design technology among existing bridges china kalei bridge is the first suspension bridge to exceed the main span of two kilometers which was considered a technical limitation in the global offshore special bridge market and is recognized as the culmination of state-of-the-art civil engineering technology this bridge which connects europe and asia with the dardanelles in between connects rabsiki on the asian side in gallibolu on the european side in chanakalay and is expected to become a world-class tourist attraction dubbed the 1915 chana kalei bridge in reference to the 1915 ottoman naval victory during world war one it is the first fixed crossing over the dardanelle strait and the sixth one across the turkish straits turkish president recep tayyip erdogan officially opened the 1915 chanakalay bridge over the dardanelle strait on march 18 2022 and is now the longest suspension bridge in the world although the turkish government requested that the work be completed by october 2023 korean companies shorten the construction period by one year and seven months thanks to the excellent and outstanding technology korean construction companies there has not been a single safety accident in the bridge section the 1915 chanakalay bridge has the longest main span the distance between the two towers of any suspension bridge in the world it has a main span of 2023 meters about 6637 feet which means it is edging out the title of world's longest suspension bridge from the akashi kaikyo crossing in kobe japan the world's longest suspension bridge was the akashi straight bridge in japan which was completed in 1998 and the distance between the main towers of akashi bridge is 1992 meters 32 meters shorter than the china chanakalay bridge with the official opening of chanakalay bridge the site of the world's longest suspension bridge was also changed for the first time in 24 years with its 2023 meter mainspan the chana kalei bridge pushes the boundaries of engineering to new dimensions and an allusion to the turkish republic's 100th anniversary in 2023 the total length of the bridge is 4.6 kilometers about 2.9 miles including the approach viaducts the two distinctive red and white towers reflect turkey's flag and these towers have a height of 334 meters above sea level the tallest in the world for suspension bridges the main tower is not only the tallest among existing suspension bridges but also overlooks the landmarks of paris france the 320 meter eiffel tower and 333 meter tokyo tower the chanakalay bridge is built on the tradition of modern suspension bridges like the great belt suspension bridge in denmark and the osmond gazi suspension bridge in turkey it is the fourth bridge linking the european and asian shores in turkey alongside the three built in istanbul until now vehicles traveling between anatolia and the gallipoli peninsula had to cross the dardanelles in a one hour fairy journey which including waiting time amounted to as much as five hours the journey will now take around six minutes the bridge was designed by denmark based cowie and pyungwa engineering consultants of south korea the chanakalay bridge is part of the new 324 kilometers long canali tuckerdag china kalei savasteep motorway that will complete a roadway chain around the marmara region the motorway is also part of turkey's portion of the one belt one road project and middle corridor vision that fits into a seamless trade route stretching from beijing to london turkey's ministry of transport and infrastructure general directorate of highways released the tender for the 2.5 billion dollars build operate transfer contract in late 2016. work on the dardanelles bridge project was launched in march 2017 with more than 5000 workers involved in the construction almost 30 years of dreaming the dream came true in a record-breaking way but the bridge is about more than breaking records it's a symbol of turkey's embattled past and a link to its hope for peaceful and prosperous future the bridge not only represents a dream come true but a milestone highlighting how design of suspension bridges has evolved in 1994 there was a proposed main span of one thousand five hundred and forty five meters based on where suspension bridge technology was at the time but before design on the nineteen fifteen china calais bridge could begin other teams had to design and pull off a complex financial p3 deal as fast as possible they did it in one year two months later dlsy won the bid anticipating an approximate four to five year construction period in 12-year operational phase the concessionaire then had to do their due diligence and forge approvals and debt assumptions which involved working with korean institutions and an islamic bank the bridge is located at the southern entrance to the marmara sea towards istanbul and the only route toward the black sea in the north high winds high seismic activity and very large container ships and cruise ships will pass in the future and the risk of ship impact is considered in the design [Music] as mentioned earlier the 1915 chana kalei bridge was built by turkish and south korean firms with an investment of 2.8 billion dollars the construction was carried out via a public-private partnership formed in 2017 between a group of turkish and south korean companies that includes dl enc and sk eco plant from south korea limac and yappi marquisi from turkey in response dl enc and sk eco plant who built the longest suspension bridge in korea the isunshin bridge formed the team isunshin and succeeded in winning the order beating out japanese companies in 2017 turkey's experience building two suspension bridges across the bosphorus strait and the korean firm's expertise along with a large cast of subcontractors and suppliers from 22 nations made the project feasible over a century after the battle at gallipoli australians worked with turks on an unprecedented feat some five hundred deaths resulted but the battle led to awakenings of national identity for australia and new zealand and galvanized the formation of the turkish republic out of the ottoman empire the australian cranes helped accelerate the project for an anticipated 2022 completion mark contracting company provided two cranes with 300 ton lifting capacity to place the final quarter panel forming the last tower block segment in the highest position in just 30 minutes this symbolized global collaboration so different from the global conflict that once occurred on the same soil [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] the anchorage blocks are as deep as 29 meters equivalent to the height of a 10-story building the european anchorage connects to the 365 meter concrete box girder approach viaduct the asian viaduct is 680 meters long each anchor is 156 tons the european anchor includes sixty eight thousand eight hundred square meters of concrete and six thousand four hundred tons of rebar the asian counterpart has ninety two thousand square meters of concrete and ten thousand eight hundred and thirty two tons of rebar they were cast in two meter high layers each cast in six segments the layers create a stack that supports the front l-shaped legs that receive the bridge cables [Music] so [Music] work on the dry dock where the giant casings for the two tower foundations would be fabricated began in 2017 the dry dock located on the european side about five kilometers from the tower sites required 1 328 pilings as deep as 21 meters and 16 000 square meters of fill state of the art technology is melted even on the invisible seabed the caisson the foundation that supports the pylon weighs up to sixty 000 tons per piece sk eco plant and dl enc successfully settled the caisson in the correct position within a 20 millimeter error by mobilizing four tugboats the casings are 74 meters by 83.3 meters and 16 meters high with floating weights of up to 54 800 tons the tower foundations are designed as a cellular base structure composed of reinforced concrete slabs and walls after the main cellular sections were constructed the casings were floated by controlled flooding of the dry dock and moved to deeper water into a wet dock in the wet dock concrete construction continued while the two caisson structures sunk deeper under the increased weight when the concrete works were finished two double walled 18 meter diameter steel cylinders were installed on top of each caisson for support of the tower legs the cylinders also helped ensure controlled immersion of the casings at the final position the ground consists of holocene clay deposits at the european tower and pleistocene clay and sand deposits at the asian tower to strengthen the seabed crews installed 368 steel piles of 2.5 meter in diameter and as long as 46 meters in length then a 3 meter thick gravel bed covering 87 square meters was placed to create a level support for the towers with 7 centimeters tolerances the inclusion piles reduce tower settlement for the european tower by about eighty percent and increases the lateral resistance of the foundations in the event of ship impact or seismic action each caisson took about 36 hours to submerge requiring a total of 152 000 cubic meters about 1.4 million gallons of water the project team took a year to collect data and create models for current speeds and depths wind temperature and even salt content the towers consist of 128 prefabricated block segments each weighing about 300 tons 18 crossbeam segments were cast in place a floating barge crane placed the bottom six segments of each tower then a tower crane placed the upper 26. [Music] [Applause] [Music] the men from mars company accomplished two lifting feats that have never been done before in november 2019 after being fully assembled at a dry dock two of mars cranes were lifted as complete units each weighing 600 tons they were lifted by a floating crane and transported to the tower cases where they were successfully installed in a one-day operation the following june one of mars cranes perched 328 meters above water took about 30 minutes to lift a 155 ton piece of the upper crossbeam to its position 328 meter above sea level on the asian tower [Music] you [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] to prepare for the suspension cable placement crews first built a pair 4270 meters long catwalks from the tower hundred of tops to the north and south approach viaducts the bridge utilizes the prefabricated parallel wire strand system which consists of high tensile strength wires bundled in a hexagonal shape sockets are fitted to both ends of the strand the cable of chana kalei bridge can support a load of 5.1 ton per steel wire in addition to overcome strong winds in the dardanelle strait an airplane wing shaped top optimized for wind resistant stability was installed there are 127 wires each 5.75 millimeters in diameter in each bundle the main span has 144 bundles per side with 148 for the side spans there are 314 hanger ropes with the shortest being 3.9 meters and the longest 232 meters pasco supplied about 86 000 tons of steel plates used to manufacture pylons and tops korea steel was in charge of manufacturing cables from raw materials produced by pasco samyang intech supplied the main cable accessories and anchorage [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] crews laid 340 000 tons of gravel and fill to support the approach viaducts and stabilize the earth with deep soil mixing and barrette walls that consist of load-bearing structural elements the bridge deck comprises two stiff and closed steel box girders spaced nine meter apart connected by three meter wide cross girders every 24 meter the gap between the two box girders ensures the aerodynamic stability of the deck in very strong wind sk eco plant and dl enc applied a streamlined twin box girder in the shape of an airplane wing optimized for wind resistance stability as the top plate in addition a wind tunnel test was conducted with a model 4608 to confirm the safety of wind resistance that can withstand the world's highest speed of 91 meters per second the overall width of the twin box girders becomes 45 meters due to one maintenance walkway on each outer side the bridge will carry six lanes three in each direction the depth of the twin box girder is 3.5 meter the total length of the bridge is 4608 meters about 2.9 miles including the side spans crews were able to place up to four deck segments a day but everything had to be planned far in advance [Music] more than symbols officials hope the bridge will stimulate local and international economic development logistics and tourism this bridge connects rab seeking asian side and deliver a european side in chanakalay province which is divided by the dardanelle strait as the only link in southern turkey connecting europe and asia it is expected to become a world landmark as well as a tourist attraction 1915 china kalei bridge and malcara china kalei motorway project is a mega scale investment in transportation and infrastructure until now this busy waterway has had to be crossed by ferry the six-lane 1915 chana calais bridge is being built to connect the turkish aegean region in europe and to offer an alternative to the congested roads through istanbul the travel time across the chanakalay strait also known as the dardanelles will be cut down to six minutes which used to take hours during holidays on ferries not only will the bridge cut down the crossing of the chanakalay strait to six minutes but the project itself will be making an enormous contribution to turkey's economy today more than 40 000 vessels pass every year and that is expected to increase significantly in the 100-year bridge design life the china-kalei bridge cost 2.8 billion dollars to construct and is expected to generate five point eight billion dollars in economic output creating one hundred and eighteen thousand jobs and two point six billion dollars in revenue these works will continue to provide profit for turkey for many years these projects have a large share in putting turkey ahead in investment workforce and exports
