Like I said, Watson wasn't going to be a big part of the first episode as it wasn't nearly the beginning of the offseason. Everyone waiting for that will have to wait for...Next time on Building The Browns!

I don’t feel like the coach they chose said anything other than a ton of coaching platitudes this whole episode.

Like even when he was talking about Denzel’s pick, he didn’t really even explain anything at all. The db was like uhhh ok.

No one cares about the shrine game. No one. And why TF do they have to shove Callie brownson down our throat every time they do any video? Does any assistant WR coach get this much attention?

what do we have our eyes on what is the single most fascinating storyline or team heading into the offseason i'm going to talk about the browns as my most interested team for a lot of reasons sources say that the cleveland browns are in agreement with the dallas cowboys on a trade for amari cooper jarvis landry is now available as a free agent the browns have also agreed to terms with defensive tackle taven bryant deshaun watson meeting today this is interesting with the cleveland browns the new england patriots are sending outside linebacker chase winovich to the cleveland browns in exchange for mack wilson they done making moves i'm not so sure the cleveland browns are done making moves barry releasing a statement on the releasing of center j.c tretter andrew berry is not going to leave any stone unchurned the browns have agreed to terms with return specialist and wide receiver jakeem grant so the browns are releasing austin hooper with post-june 1st designation watson and his camp informing the browns this morning that they are looking elsewhere baker mayfield the browns quarterback told espn that he has requested a trade in an unbelievable stunning turn of events desean watson is expected to be a member of the cleveland browns yes yeah i think it's been an exciting offseason so far with the decision to bring to sean on we understood that there's going to be questions and concerns and we really rely on the work that we did on desean on the background of this person that we're bringing into this organization and i can tell you after gathering information after processing all that information i feel very strongly about desean the person i think this community is going to get to know deshaun i know his teammates are going to get to know him and they're going to understand that this is a genuine person obviously it's a huge trade for our organization we recognize how big a deal it is to the football team we also recognize all the questions that exist with it but there's also other things that are going on in our offseason that are equally as important as you put a team together and i think the off season is always a big puzzle and as we know there are big pieces and small pieces but they're all really important and without each one of those pieces you can't put the thing together you know we put a premium on player development and that is important obviously that's the product on the field and we want all of our players to get better as we get them whether they're a first year player or 10-year player i think with the coaches we have the same mentality i think we have a growth mindset as a staff guys that want to get better and i think that really permeates throughout our staff and with our young coaches especially they want to continue to grow let's head out on the hotline to visit with our good buddy jeff howard he's of course our defensive backs coach and he will serve as the defensive coordinator for the east west shrine bowl yeah so it's a it's a pretty cool thing so and the way they do it is is you end up coaching up one position from where you're at yeah i think the shrine bowl is such a cool setup for us as coaches where they allow nfl coaches to coach up if you will so if you're a position coach you may be the defensive coordinator if you're an assistant position coach you may be the position coach at the shrine bowl and i think it's just a unique opportunity for us as coaches to grow and i speak from first-hand experience i was able to go down there and be the offensive coordinator for a week and it's something i had never done it was the first time i've ever called plays in my life if you're not counting madden so i think it was something where i was able to go down there and grow i really encouraged our coaches to go do this it's it's a unique opportunity where you can go out there own a position own a defense like jeff was able to and really create your voice find your voice as a coach if you will and i thought that opportunity for jeff is invaluable [Music] the shrine bowl is an all-star game top seniors in in college football get the opportunity to come out here and show their skills in really a practice setting and then also to come out in a game and as coaches i think it's a great opportunity to be able to work with some of these guys and really kind of see where they are and through the day-to-day process that's going to be very similar to what they face in the nfl you know there's a lot of things that you you can see in an interview like an hour long interview but just to be with a guy for a week and in preparation for a game i think it's a great evaluation tool over here we'll start on the 15-yard line and we'll try to get everybody as many rest as we can let's get a break real quick chance you defense on three one two three who's reliable i want to know who is reliable yeah good nice good finish good finish good match good match there we go d there we go d nice nice pop nice pop hey come on you're doing a good job having a good week though keep going keep doing what you're doing you'll be all right that's a tough route it's like one step you thought it was planned yeah i was trying to get my so it's like one step slant and then pivot hey denzel pick that one i got to show you guys that one i watched it it was the pit it was it was pick six in cincinnati it's the exact same route it's one step jamar comes here and then pivots back but we worked it all week because it was like it's like one step and then one two three and then so you can't really trust it as a slant until he's past the third step we get an eight hour day where we're working together there's so many different things that you can evaluate from a character standpoint but also from a skill standpoint and are are they are they coachable can you give them a coaching cue and are they being able to transfer it onto the field i think although there's so many different things that you can evaluate i think it's really a priceless tool defense defense defense hey here we go here we go here we go here we go hey good day today all right a lot of good stuff we put a lot of good stuff on tape you practice you put time in and then what happens you execute right so that's why it's important that we come out here and we get our work in competitors do what they compete know that and know that when i'm looking i want to see guys that are competitors and i see it out here and when we go out um in this game we're going to go out and compete and we're going to put our brand of football on on tape okay so let's get everybody get in here let's get a compete on three one two three [Music] let's get started all right good uh we talked about it on the field but good job today in in practice uh we got a lot of good things uh done i'm gonna point a few of those out a couple things that we need to work on or talk through there's some complexities in developing a team in five days what the guys have been going through is almost like a game week during during the season so day to day on the day-to-day schedule what they're going to do is they're going to come in we're going to meet in the morning try to you know go through what we're going to do at practice we walk through it and then we go out and practice and then at the end of the day we circle back and kind of correct the things that need to get corrected from practice middle field safety pushes demarcus off we get a uh an up call and then he's able to fall off of it all right this is really good like being able to do this in three days is excellent guys really good stuff bill you had where are you at you had one today where you were in this situation right because where's the running back always looking inside so if you're outside and he's looking inside is a good opportunity for you to go attack it all right so good job you know this is a great example of it in an interview setting you know there's only so many questions that you can ask and guys get coached up on how to answer those questions uh i think when you're in a more authentic situation like on the field off the field uh in the meeting room you're able to see what those guys look like on a day-to-day basis we have a great relationship with the scouting department as coaches um and those conversations are very easy you know you know what did you see today you know standing sitting in the sands watching and then they asked me you know what did you see and i think it's those conversations that are so so important because you just you gain perspective so let's get a break we'll have a short like five minute break and then uh you guys will split up stevies are here linebackers and d lyman okay so let's go uh west side on three one two three this is a tremendous week uh this game helps kids with rare medical conditions it's gonna help a lot of people around the world and we all just wanna say thank you guys for participating for being involved in the game and we're going to have a lot of fun tomorrow and for the rest of the week so thank you guys today is our day before the game so we'll our coaching staff football wise we'll have some walkthroughs later on and get ready for the game but really it's our chance for our players to kind of integrate and and meet with our shriners patients right and see what the shriners hospital is all about learn from that perspective so that's a big part of of what media day is today what is going on over here oh [Music] giving back serving is the heart of this game so today a lot of players were were able to come down and interact with some of those the kids that have been impacted by the shriners hospital and i think that's really kind of a neat thing it's been a great atmosphere being in vegas we've been able to experience some of those different pieces of the city and you know even better with combining with the pro bowl right can we continue to grow this and see where these guys are now and where they could potentially get to later in their careers and for them they're going to get a little bit of a sneak peek as we go to the pro bowl skills challenge man you see chubb out there warming up chub's about to run like this 40 this 40-yard dash he's warming up so we're just here at the pro bowl taking a little break from trying practices letting the guys get out and take part in some of the activities and and see some of the future stars and guys they want to ascend to be like in their future [Music] [Music] it's pretty cool i see guys like denzel out there i see nick out there he just lost the 40 yard dash to micah parsons so i'll let him hear about that a little bit later but it's pretty neat to see those guys having fun out there come on we're going to do it you ready you know that whole week was a great opportunity for the members of our organization to go into two situations and really you know show the league who we are and what we're about you know something we talk about here so much is we don't only represent ourselves but we represent the team we represent our organization i think our coaches did that down in the shrine bowl and i think our players did as well oh my god morning fellas how are you doing good it's good it's game day right game day all right so this is what we do all right this is why we you know you put in the time uh all that effort is to go out there and play and uh i hope you guys are confident uh in the the preparation that you have what we're going to do today is we're going to go over uh the plan really just to talk through it make sure we're on the same page so like that last meeting before the game was kind of like a comprehensive summary of what we had put in for the last couple days so we were really trying to put it all together like what what had been talking about the last three days and what were the high priority things that we wanted to accomplish when we went out there and played very important right we want to have poison urgency and discipline in two minutes who's the pressure on offense all right all right they got to score they don't score they lose all right so we just got to execute do our job and we'll be in great shape i wanted to i cut some of this stuff up uh would like to watch for with you guys before uh before we go out there i know we hit it a little bit yesterday but it's a little bit of stuff that i've seen uh when i was watching tape yesterday i think that was a successful meeting it was cool to walk through that stuff i felt like the guys were confident in the plan and then were able to go out and execute all right let's get a break play fast play physical play go here we go time to roll let's go let's go so i think you know game day was it was fun it felt a lot like what we do here with the browns you know as a coach reflecting back i try to go through the whole process so like i would be with a coordinator so you go back you watch the tape you kind of see what we what we did well what we did poorly and uh that was that was kind of cool just to go through that my family is extremely important to me like being a father and a husband is like a high priority in my life so anytime that we get an opportunity to have the kids come out to the game and and my wife it's it's fun to just share that experience with here we go opportunity knocks who's going to answer and here we go underway in this 97th east west shrine bowl hey defense right here hey right here hey when they're backed up ear muffs all right earmuffs alert for hard count alert for hard count third down hey three now baby let's go there's your sail route there's your sail route good good stop three and out three and out three and out [Music] something that we wanted really wanted to do especially at the beginning of the game is on you know first and second down against the run game we wanted to kind of showcase some of our defensive linemen with movements and i thought we did we did a good job of that hey this the life go three and out and drink gatorade that's what we want to do during the week we talked about celebrating success so any you know forcing fumbles you know making plays we want to enjoy it but it actually in the game it happened we ended up getting a fumble and it was cool because our guys ended up running down and uh celebrating with some of the the patients from the hospital were at the game so that was kind of cool that was a cool moment we get it down and out [Applause] [Music] [Applause] down and out thanks for coming out boys it felt great to get the win that was something we talked to the guys about it was like we're coming to showcase our each of our individual abilities but we want to win the game like that's ultimately what what we're trying to do to go out there and uh you know it was great to do that and i'm glad you know it got crazy at the end i thought we executed and it was great to get the win plus uh you know i got to rib on uh on ryan since we since we did beat them it's a good feeling hey dbs dbs can we get a pick can you get a picture yeah so that i don't know that's something that i i just like being a part of team is so special and you know whether it's three days or you know multiple years i feel like there's always a bond if you have a good team guys that value each other you know it becomes a bond that that lasts for a long time you know i there's i coached in that game a couple years ago and they're still guys that i i talk to that i coached from back there but just being in the trenches with one another it kind of forms those bonds and it was fun it was cool to see that you know i always i kind of initiated taking a picture because i want to remember those guys say future rounds [Music] not only am i representing myself but i'm representing this organization and i feel like the way that we did it there kind of puts our organization in a positive light and i you know that was a big goal of mine [Music] i think staff development is like really important to coach safanski it's something that we've done every off season that we've been here starting after the 2020 season and it's been really impactful for us as a coaching staff i think it's extremely important to have these opportunities you know myself with usa football and team usa and what they do with the shrine bowl game all of those things are really important it not only gives you a chance to develop as a coach but it also gives you a chance to network around too so you're meeting a lot of other coaches from other teams you're getting a chance to kind of grow your network and your tree and i think something like that getting the experience and then meeting the people that you do is something that really helps somebody like ryan as well you know so he took on a new role where he's you know helping out with the passing game over uh in minnesota and then also doing um you know some game management stuff for them which is one of his strong suits as well so you know it's really cool to see him turn an opportunity for development into an opportunity obviously for his career so we all have aspirations to continue to climb the ladder in this industry and um you know being involved in things like this helps us do that two kick outs gonna be up man two kickoffs jeff is he's an incredible coach he's somebody who i love to get a chance to go over and watch coach so i was really cool to see him have that opportunity because i know he does have aspirations someday of being a defensive coordinator so he kind of got to get a taste of that okay hey we're gonna coaches are gonna hit a few things uh with the adjustment it's really different you know it's different being the one who's doing it because it's on you you know to have all the answers that's who everybody's looking to um so you know all you can do when you get the opportunity to watch you know really good coaches who do it in the locker room you know at halftime is is to just learn how they do it learn how they communicate some of the things that they prioritize etc it's just you know it's a good learning opportunity be a little bit heavier on that halftime in the nfl is so fast and furious but it was kind of like getting into the locker room i had already been thinking about what the team had been you know what were they trying to do to us what did we need to adjust what are things that we needed to talk about and then kind of just execute the plans good job let's set the tone of the second half let's get the west side on three one side on me one two three that's such a big part of coaching on the field is being able to make those adjustments and um i think it's really cool to kind of see back behind the lens of how that works i think you can learn a lot about a coach by how they do that and how they take that you know you can spend all week prepping for a game and and think you know your opponent but really what happens when you get out there is is its own deal and so being able to make those adjustments both on the sideline and in the game can define you as a coach really so every time i'm able to kind of witness a coach doing something like that i'm learning a lot as well how would i handle myself in this situation from a composure standpoint etc it's all it's all a learning opportunity [Music] when everybody got back from the shrine bowl you know our our mode was combined so it was getting ready for the combine combine prep it's going to be cool to get back to normal a little bit you know to be able to go through our process go into indy which is such a big part of you know the scouting process and in the off season really what we do as coaches as we get into this off season is we put our scout hats on so we get to dive into the college tape and really try to become masters of understanding each one of these guys and the focus has to be on getting better because that's that's our mindset last season didn't end how we wanted it to in 2022 we gotta make sure it starts off the right way and really that just starts with getting back together starting with the basics starting at square one and building something for 2022. i think the most important part uh in the process for us at the combine is to be able to visit with these players that's having a bus that's sir man carla's crazy the brown and the orange happy to be here i'm excited to be here and looking forward to being here for the rest of my career you
