Building The Browns 2020: A Winning Start (Ep. 10)

all right good morning everybody let's get started for tomorrow all right couple things to note number one player testing when your testing window ends on saturday if you're late you will not play in the game on sunday okay i don't want you to be late any day obviously saturday would be the day to make sure you're in the building and doesn't miss this we are traveling tomorrow remember we're leaving from here that's different for the guys that were here before right we're leaving from here so your cars are staying here you're not parking plainside all right let's have a great friday and i will see you guys out on the field my name is brian swindle i'm the manager of team travel handle all the logistics for home and away games travel in the team to and from cleveland to the away city you know our timeline of planning these trips really changed this year based on covet and based on the protocols you know typically we have these hotel contracts signed in may and we have everything contractually set up before we break for the summer so when we come back for training camp we can really just start planning about two to three weeks out for each trip uh but this year with the protocols not coming out until as late as they did we were really working on the fly and and leading up to baltimore we were signing contracts you know days before the trip just to be able to to execute so again flexibility was the biggest thing when it comes to planning these trips again we're used to planning these things months out you know at a time now we're doing it days if not weeks at a time so you know a lot less time to prepare but the same amount of work is still there artie did you check in the hotel or what gotcha hey did i tell you that joe wants to unload uh one bus at a time everywhere all right perfect i'll call ryan today to figure that out back in the summer we started to really kind of think before we even knew protocols uh what those would look like we we really started brainstorming about how travel would be different right and really now that we got the protocols down on paper we're taking a lot less people right typically we would have about 175 people on the road and this year we're cutting it down to about 130 135 so we really took it to each department and a lot of the departments that are used to traveling in general some of those groups just couldn't go right but we really looked at all the departments and kind of talked through it with them and say hey what do you need on the road and how many people do you need on the road to execute everything you need on game day without sacrificing the quality and the service that you bring to the trip but they really narrowed it down again taking 40 people off the trip is not an easy decision another thing with our our protocols this year is we have to supply the appropriate ppe for everybody traveling and that's something obviously we're not used to so our training room you know joshian and his team did a great job putting together these care packages per se with you know an n95 mask that we require everyone to wear when traveling and we distributed that to everybody traveling ahead of the trip right there after our tsa check-in gave them the ppe bag had everybody put an n95 mask on before getting on the bus before flying to our first trip and from there we're taking 11 buses to the airport here in cleveland and boarding that boeing triple 7 which seats over 350 but only putting about 130 on there so look our goal in traveling is is really to travel in a controlled environment and maintain that social distancing so again we put all these procedures in place at the facility and done a great job throughout training camp traveling is really no different so we really need to maintain that social distancing and all those same processes and procedures on the road football is finally here but it will be nfl football unlike we've seen it in recent past i'm in amass just like everybody inside of m t bank stadium it is unlike any other stadium experience i've seen in my eight years with this browns organization there will be no fans instead there will be cardboard cutouts here in baltimore today [Music] week one was very uh different it was very weird i guess because you know you think about sporting events you the fans is the people that make it you know um so it's definitely weird um not hearing the crowd react to everything that was happening in the game um and you didn't really hear the background noise so it was really like a big scrimmage or a big practice you know against another team let's go bro be you be who you are good afternoon everybody and welcome in to the nfl season in the nfl coronavirus era lebron's take on the two-time defending afc north champion baltimore rivet let's go fellas let's do this man let's go let's go you know you go back to that first week and there's about a thousand things i wish i could do differently and that's kind of part of the gig you know understanding what didn't work out and then how we can be better moving forward when you go play a really good opponent on the road you better be in it for a 60-minute game and we just we weren't there and that's really credit to them then also for us just things that we could clean up we uh the things that we can control i thought we could have done a way better job at uh that having said that you know guys got went out there they competed we they understood what type of game it was going to be so there's some things to take away from it but we got to make sure that throughout all these games we're learning about ourselves learning about what we do well and maybe some things that we don't do so well jarvis landry first catch of the year in traffic pulls it down and a big play for the browns out to the 41-yard line and they're quickly up to the line of scrimmage again they give to nick jump oh crap runs near side right he's to the 45 stiff arm cookie 45 down the sideline 35 and steps into the raymond sideline near the 30-yard line yeah going into baltimore week one obviously not having the the looks pre-season uh is the challenge but uh it's mostly about you know protecting the looks that you've seen on film from the years prior they consistently do and then really adapt within the game of the new looks the new pressures they might bring touchdown baby touchdown baby touchdown baby touchdown baby touchdown baby that's perfect going into it wanted to get the ball out of my hands quickly wanted to establish the run game and just keep chipping away at that we knew it wasn't going to be easy i mean that was a great showing for david obviously you don't want to come out with an injury but he'll be back soon enough you know i think it came down to just looking back at the film and realizing if we just do our job we can improve hey where'd it go boy [Music] it's not like we lost to a bad team in the first game like this is a team who was expected to win a super bowl last year this is a team who was 14-2 last year this is a very good baltimore ravens team who didn't lose many pieces it's all about what happens on those sundays that is true testament to your team and you just kind of like i said i took it as a mulligan you flush it and just get right on to the next one come on hey take us we tried everything else let's go i said we didn't try everything else let's go let's go we tried everything else take us need it take us yeah jarvis is an outstanding leader it is very real and authentic with him he will tell you what's on his mind he will encourage you i really appreciate his leadership and we're going to need it throughout this entire season let's go defense you need that no from guys like jarvis you know drew's always giving that energy you know to both sides of the ball you know keeping this up now you never want to see one of your leaders with their heads down and he doesn't do that you know he's always you know getting guys back into the game you know whether we're up or down you know making sure they're staying focused keeping them uh full attention on that next play that's that's all that matters i think it's important to motivate guys you know whether things are going good or bad just for the simple fact that you know i think in a football game it's 60 minutes you know and you can't live in one series you can't live in one play you know you have to move on are we good we got two quarters we could put up 24 in two quarters too you know so a lot of things that i always tell guys just you know on to the next play one play at a time hey one player at a time right here well those are the things that you know i always tell myself that helps me regroup that helps me refocus um whether i've done something good or bad you know just to the next play because it's a long game a lot of things happen um and you got to just be in the moment yeah jarvis is an unbelievable guy to have on this team just his positivity that that stuff spreads throughout the locker room he's a guy that you can always go to no matter what the problem is if it's football related or not he's going to have a few things of advice and words of wisdom for you and that's something that a lot of these young guys he he's somebody you can lean on uh and you can definitely count on always and that's nothing to do with just his football talent hey bro hello we did the same thing today last year and now i'm gonna win the super bowl my message to the team after week one loss was just you know we got a lot of games left you know we got a lot of games left we got to flush this down the taller we were on a short week the next week coming up play the bengals on a thursday night so you know we got to flush this as fast as possible and just move on to the next team [Music] [Music] i thought the guys really were ready to go in in that first ball game went down there and played a really good football team so didn't go the way we we wanted it to go but i think the work that we're putting in throughout the first few weeks of the season i think you're seeing a team that we hope is getting incrementally better expectations are always to win it it's been a long time since you know we played competitive football played against another team uh without having the preseason so i think the the most important thing for us it was the first true evaluation of the players that we had on defense we all know and there's no perfect roster in the nfl there's some things we need to keep working on and we'll continue to do so whether it's during the season and in the offseason to keep building a championship level team and we want to bring a championship to cleveland that's our number one goal and will always be our number one goal going forward so i'm really excited about the way the team is is headed you know our guys did a great job bouncing back and that's behind us and you know we're going to keep looking forward to our next opponent every week you know why we decided to wear the the orange pants and roll them out against the the bengals game in the battle of ohio where just obvious reasons was one it's prime time game you know first time you know we're at home uh against the division opponent 100th birthday of the start of the national football league and uh you know we just thought it's bengals week let's have some fun let's break these out let's get people excited and um you know had a little fun with our fans and saying i'm not sure if we're going to have him or not but it was a lot of fun i think people i did a few interviews here and there whether it was on 923 or or with our friend mcneal and his podcast and you know i i think there was a little hint of sarcasm hopefully people picked up on it that i said maybe we'll see we'll talk to our friends at nike so yeah i mean look when we first went through the whole uniform process with the nfl and nike it was uh we had to have wow those are the wood that's tight could not have your phone [Music] just [Music] [Laughter] that's your you guys bring it back to the primary bro yeah yeah hey what's up you know so they've been in the works since since day one i think there's a clip when we had odell and baker and jarvis when we first signed odell last year and i said hey well you know this is something we'll keep in the closet a little secret clearly it was the orange pants so they've been there for a while and it was nice just to keep keep people guessing a little bit and have a little fun playing up the first thursday night game of the season under the lights with our fans there was a big deal the city was behind our plan obviously the states behind our plan we're continuing to work with the state to hopefully have more fans at games obviously we want to make sure if we do that that we're doing all the right things and people are staying safe so so we can continue to have games late in the year and you know our team has done a great job preparing to put the protocols in place to provide a safe environment for our fans and our players which is first and foremost and and have fans there when these games they all matter but when they really start to matter down the road and yeah very excited and ready to keep going [Music] for sure i feel safe you know everyone's got their mask on they're going to distance everybody apart and they're keeping everyone straight the protocol that they sent out prior to the game was spot on it addressed everything where we feel super safe being here yeah i was here uh what two fridays ago for the practice felt really safe then mask up and let's watch some football something i talked to the team about it was thursday night football so you had joe buck and troy aikman and i know the orange pants that's a big deal to a lot of people but at the end of the day you know we knew we had to go play a 60-minute football game and we knew we had a really good team coming into our house so we really put the focus on the things that we had to do in order to win that game and we had to apply pressure the quarterback we had to make sure that we were efficient in the run in the pass game hit those big plays when they come in the pass game there's a lot going on in thursday football with prime time but it's really it's that 60 minute game that we put the focus on you know what i'm not a fan of what orange orange facing orange yeah like i like when there's contrast you know it's a lot of orange on the field i gotta say i feel a little juice for this one i want to suit up you got it how many how many reps could you give us a run or a pass uh hey whatever the team needs now that's the right attitude paul let's go we live for shoulders good set up nick you know i know nick in there handling business so that's the biggest thing you know you got to be patient wait for your time and you know stay ready and that's what i had to do and uh when my name was called number is called no matter what point in the game you know i'm always gonna be ready i can't have people saying i wasn't ready to come into the game or something like that i just kept my head in the game and uh you know stayed involved and as soon as i got my number called i tried to make the most of my opportunity [Applause] kareem hunt is now in at running back here comes kareem hunt off the right side and he's fighting inside the 35 and he got the first down off the right side mayfield in trouble in the pocket he get out of there he get out of there somebody like kareem on them who's talented and a different runner in his own right than nick so he we know what nick's capable of uh really he's capable of it of a lot and we got a one rock here so we're gonna make make sure that we're mindful about how we put this thing together how we grow rules for these guys throughout the season hey let's go let's go let's go let's go dominate let's go were able to put together here and on game day it takes all of us so as a play caller i'm very collaborative and alex van pelt is in my ear throughout the game coach callahan really all the coaches i want input and i think there's a great way to do this thing and that's with everybody involved because there's there's no one right answer this thing i like to hear from everybody and that helps me as we go through a game and and i can promise you if it was just up to me it wouldn't be good i need all those guys [Applause] rush that is such a good feeling it is a reminder that when we can lean on people you just need to do it bengals down by five he approaches the ball get it he boots it down the field and janovich is up in the air and on a big hop he recovers it you you you best playing pilots feel real good today too we knew going into week three uh the washington football team had a great front we wanted to take care of that they have guys up front that can ruin a game for you uh if you don't handle it the correct way and so you know just the mindset of do our job continue to carry that mindset week in and week out and that's what we're going to accomplish [Applause] you know to roll and try oh harrison brian carter touchdown yeah damn it so in the moment i was pretty excited that we scored it was a big drive for us to answer um and then watching the film he spiked the ever living crap out of that ball i mean and then uh guys were talking on the sidelines you get the ball you get the ball and somebody finally brought it back to him he was too excited to even realize that was his first touchdown ball in the nfl so he didn't even keep it he spiked it and moved on and i think it was just a screaming celebration he couldn't contain his emotions i love you boys be patient i love you i was really just coming over here to say yeah that's all i got for you all right that moment right there i took my breath away is that inspirational speech my day's made genie's back to pass he got hit as he threw and it is picked off again b.j goodson's got it the third pick of the day for the browns hey complimentary football complimentary football let's roll man let's roll mayfield under center gives the ball jumps coming out to the left he's getting led by wyatt teller he's in a 58-10 five corner touchdown nick job he's done it again [Applause] good job boys good job damn it i love you well that was a just a fun hand-off drive yeah i think i am too there was a lot of good ones on that drive here you got a two-way wow [Music] i want one more but hell i'll take the w over anything on first down from the blind side they hit him and knock him down and they wrestle the ball away [Applause] this league's about playing complimentary football feeding off each other but you know you're gonna have to lean on one side of the ball the other each each game so this game we started off very slow offensively defense played great um all the turnovers and gave us great field position and we just tried to capitalize on that and they continue to get more turnovers and just the momentum that brings and you can build on it uh it's it's pretty fun to be on the sidelines when you get rolling like that yeah hats off to our defense for extremely uh great performance in week three 95. i was able to get a good get off i was starting to catch the rhythm miller cadence so when i got off i saw it you know his hands were a little bit late so i just went to a speed rip saw hash and still out the ball he had no mother or starch in his throwing motion and there's no way that i can come off the edge and i'll get that sack without no attempting to get a a strip because you know he doesn't know i'm there from the right side so as soon as i hit him i went for the the the swat and when i hit him i kind of you know threw him down my left slaughtered out my right he went down the ball bounced off his his foot back into my hands and i was like i wouldn't expect the ball bounced back to me so it hit me and i was like oh snap the boss right here so i kind of corralled it and uh 74 tried to put my hand down so i um pulled it right back to me and while while i'm going back to the ground uh don't try to pull away from i was like no that's mine baby see that give me that hey you got the strip and the recovery yes sir and the yard game pull up so bad worth every penny win i'll take it but we we have to be better there's no doubt about it that's a good football team um but we have to be better we have to uh take advantage of some of those field position changes and week is to go 1-0 all right you did you did it guess what you got to do next week all right we're at dallas we're at the house next week we got to heal up we got to do all the things we did that put us in position right now to play how we played and was it perfect no no that's what we're gonna work with that's what we're working on every single week and i appreciate how this group works once in about guys it's about the ball but what's it about in this room team team on three one two three [Music] you know one of the challenges we faced going to this dallas trip is again typically we would have these hotel contracts you know buttoned up in in may and have all that done uh but again with the protocols being so late this year we weren't able to sign a contract until you know mid-august and we we found out then that our dallas hotel wouldn't be able to take us so again that's a new challenge we've never experienced before right these hotels are secured months in advance so for us to be able to to be faced with having to find a new hotel just weeks from the trip is something we definitely um definitely we're new at i thought we did a good job securing a second hotel and then have no issues and no hesitations with that and confident they're going to do a great job for us and on the dallas trip [Music] yeah so this year obviously when we get in the away city there's a lot of new rules that we have to uh to follow you know some that the team put in place and others that are you know guided by the nfl protocols but you know our guys are really used to that chartered plane uh police escort right into the hotel typically for example we would unload you know five six buses at a time and all 170 people are just you know jumping right into the hotel well this year one loading you know one bus at a time to allow 14 people to get into the hotel comfortably before opening up that second bus these guys really can't leave the hotel so really just trying to make the hotel as comfortable for these guys as possible because they're spending more time in the hotel and they can't leave once we get into the hotel you know all of our meal room used to be a nice big cafeteria where guys can hang out and eat in and now this year it's completely grab and go so we're telling all of our guys to grab their food pre-packaged and get back up to their rooms to eat that's a big difference this year as well as our meetings uh you know typically we would have a huge team meeting room a ballroom of a 3 000 square foot and put you know put our whole team in there you know saturday night before the game and this year it's looking a little bit different right so whether it's virtual meetings in their rooms or it's uh you know smaller breakout rooms and everyone zooms together the meeting structure is completely different as well and then i thought all in all everybody handled uh traveling really well all right so schedule first of all today we got snack after this on the third floor okay and then tomorrow remember we're on central time so we've got breakfast starting at six okay but it is mandatory so we'll be open from six to 9 30. the first set of buses are leaving at 8 30. second set of buses are leaving at 9 30 and we got a noon kickoff okay versus dallas okay so speaking of that noon kickoff make sure you guys are up and at them okay and ready ready to roll early to be a team that shows up and plays sound discipline ball a team that doesn't beat themself okay there's going to be a team that sticks together okay there's going to team that weathers the storm has that find away mentality okay there's a team that's going to fight for every inch tomorrow that team's on this call right now okay that team's going to be in the visitor locker room that team's going to be on the visitor's sideline tomorrow okay and i believe that because of the people we have i believe that that team right that team is right here that team is ready to play harder and longer than the team we're playing tomorrow and i we're in the right believe we're in the right place come get something we in the right place let's go we're here we're here your mindset is the competition's always there even with forbes who you know opted out i knew that the competition was right there i knew that someone someone could take that right guard spot and in my mind it was my job to keep or you know to really really really take the next step and be you know a studded regard and that that was that's something i took personally this off season was saying i can do it right i know i can do it and doing it like the last two weeks we come out we dominate and we win this [Music] is that what you were going for dude my neck hurts i mean if you sit back like look like this it's not time and that's just who he is um you know i'm appreciative of that because being a young guy i need those reps i need to get as many reps at right guard as i can get to make it natural you good you know yes i put the work in and i'm reaping some of the benefits but to be able to work um another day is a blessing right it's one thing that every game you go into you you know you pray to god please you know keep the people on the field healthy chubb sitting down on the turf in the browns offense standing around him right now with 59 seconds left to go here in the first quarter and chubb is being helped up uh jeff smiles this kareem hunt is over by him and he looks better than it did about a minute ago doesn't it yes it does i know that uh that i have a lot to work on and i know that i mean i played left guard through college uh so like 45 43 games or 45 games whatever it was and then whenever i got to buffalo you know it was more the same you know they kind of were like hey how's the fast we can get on the field at left guard so you know it was definitely an adjustment coming in here plus you know learning a new scheme it was a lot i mean um it was kind of feeling more i'm right guard so i moved over to right and you know when your entire stagger your your entire post foot is your right foot now your post puts your left foot and it it has a lot to do with it and that that was hard um you know learning a new position learning learning a new scheme and even with the success of you know that we've had early this year you know i know there's so much more to build on [Applause] his second of the day and the bronzer a kick away from tying the ball game up [Music] the kick is up and the kick is good hey he got hit by garrett that ball is loose on the turf and the browns have it your consistency of domination when you're one-on-one the first head coach ever said that right if if we have 11 guys winning here one-on-one we've won and he shoulders his way in off the left side touchdown browns i love it how probably every single cowboys fan right now is going we're losing to cleveland not knowing that we're good man how to reverse they're going to give it to beckham he's right that's all it is 16 one one game seasons right you got 16 one game seasons and that's uh that's one thing that coach is trying to hit home uh as well as you know the mentality of it's all about the next game what's what's what are you doing in the next game yes sir no so that's uh that's the mentality but i'll tell you what bill callahan has done a great job with that offensive line one more knee taken by baker mayfield and that is it you're a dog and as i told you all afternoon long we had them all the way as the bronze win over the cowboys to go to three and one of the year with three wins in a row all right hey we talked about weather in the storm down 14-7 we scored 34 on it hey i got some stats for you plus three turn over margin [Applause] one dude one one dude had 73 yards I absolutely loved that little moment around minute 23, when Stefanski defers to Callahan’s suggestion that they run the same play back to Kareem. It speaks so highly of the man. He has no ego and can respect and accept suggestions of his coaching staff. He said the other day that he really leans on Callahan during games. It’s nice to see that that wasn’t just talk—he really does. I think we got a good one.
