well it is day number two on the chicken coop bill today we're going to be building our our nest boxes the nest box has to go in the chicken coop so today is another dreary rainy day and it's the rains let off for a few minutes so we're going to try to take advantage of that get this these nest boxes built we're also going to try to build our roofs today for the chickens to sleep on at night and then if we have time we'll still try to get our cage wire that hardware cloth get it all caged in and then the chicken coop should be done and ready for chickens so let's get building [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] well it looks like I got done just in time so that it started raining on me those last couple pieces in that nest box and so I didn't actually get the door mounted to the rear of it where you'll get the eggs out of the back of it so I still have that to kind of mount on the back put the hinges on there but pretty much the nest box is complete it is designed to fit in this opening right here hopefully I've cut everything right now and it fits right in so now we'll go ahead try to get this nest box slid into place get it mounted and then see if we can get the the rear door mounted to the nest box as well [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] my god don't worry you knew your own picture taken that day oh there's goats in the barn my wife [Music] [Applause] well we're almost finished putting on this hardware cloth this cage wire that we're putting on the chicken coop so we got one section left to do that's down here at the bottom that's where the door is that the chickens are going to go in and out of the coop at so I want to go ahead and make this door real quick see if we can find some scrap lumber or something that we can make the chicken door out of and then we can finish this wire up on the coop and get to building the roof [Music] [Applause] [Music] so this is day three on the chicken coop bill I had no idea this project was gonna take me so long three days worth I think this hardware cloth is just way long takes way longer to get it cut and stapled on than I thought it was going to so today to finish this coop up I need to build roofs for the chickens to sleep on tonight so what I'm thinking is I'm going to build a free-standing roost like a free-standing structure that are the chicken roof so I'm going to set it over here on this floor over here on this side the reason I want to make it freestanding is so that I can pick it up and move it around to help clean out the chicken coop I don't want to have to try to clean around it it'd be easier just to pick it up and move it so I just need to make it heavy enough that it doesn't move on the chickens now my the other problem that I have is right this is my nest box and if you can see it's actually probably a couple feet off the ground that's a little high for a chicken to be able fly up and get in that small hole so what I'm thinking is I need to put like a roost or like a little perch here on the front of this nest box so if price can't come off the bottom of here come out probably about eight inches or so and build me a little roost here in front of the nest box hopefully the chickens will be able to fly up there get on that and then jump into the nest box that's what I'm thinking that's what get those two things done I think that'll pretty much wrap up the chicken coop [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] well I think that kind of finishes up the chicken coop project so this is this took way longer than I thought it was going to very time-consuming I think a lot of it has to do with this hardware cloth this hardware cloth was just time consuming to cut and the biggest problem was actually up here we had to actually cut little boards to put up here to nail the hardware cloth to so we can make it secure in between all the rafters to keep any kind of animals from being able to maybe get into the chickens so we did put a lot of effort into trying to make sure this was secure as possible so we have our nest box here we could add another nest box later if we wanted to this one has five nests in it so hopefully this is enough we have to do have this lower door on the outside I still need to put a handle on it but we shouldn't be able to reach in here and get all of our eggs without having to go inside the loop so that is that is a that's a positive thing not having to get inside the coop if you don't have to that's what this Dutch door is for - we can open it up throw stuff inside the coop to the chickens if we want without having to actually get inside the coop or let the chickens out and then we did get this little door here this little door and we can lock it closed and we can lock it open and that will let the chickens in and out and so I think that'll be nice as well so let's go ahead and we'll look inside see what the inside the coop looks like so on our nest box here afraid it was too high so we ended up putting this little roost here on the top so this little roost is about 10 inches away from the nest box or 10 to 8 inches away from the nest box so hopefully that will get up here and then get inside of the nest I think that these two by fours standing on edge you know those make a pretty good ruse and they're about perfect for the chickens to be able to lay on or rest on so we ended up making two different sets of chicken roofs we made one with 3-tier and we made a two-tier and these can moving around if necessary so these are just two by fours well actually they're two by threes standing on end and that is the roost they're about twelve inches apart from each other and they end up being about eight inches from the wall so I think that worked out pretty good so we should have plenty of space between this roost and that roost to be able to reach all the chickens we have we have 23 chickens probably my biggest concern is that five nest boxes are not going to be enough right now we've got three so this is an improvement upon what we have but anyway this is our new chicken coop and I think it's gonna work out pretty good so I still do need to come back and anchor the floor to you know to the concrete so what I'm going to be using is I'm going to be using these these are tapcon concrete anchors basically these I'm just you just drill a quarter inch hole in the concrete and then these thread into them directly into the concrete I like these things are just super easy to use so be using these tapcon concrete screws to anchor these walls to the concrete so I still I'll come back later and do that well that's another project knocked off the list I'm glad this one's done and way bigger of a project than I thought it was going to be but I do have a lot more projects down here in the bottom level of this the bottom level of this barn so I still have I got two more stalls that I'm planning on making so I'm gonna build us another stall on that side over by the goats my wife's getting a fainting goat on May 15th so I have to have that stall built before then so that she can keep that fainting goat separated from the other goats for so many days when we first get it and then on this side I'm gonna build like a multi-purpose pin it could be used as an animal stall or it can even be used as a like a brooder or something like that it's going to be completely caged in kind of similar to the chicken coop but it will be we'll build it strong enough at the bottom maybe add some cattle panels at the bottom so that you could have large livestock in there if you wanted to as well so you could use it as a birthday install or or whatever so to be a multi-purpose pin on this side and so that's what we got planned on down here in the bottom of the barn we'll come back in another video we'll get this whole area down here set up for the chickens we'll get the food and water down here we will get some nesting material in here and we'll try to gather up all our chickens and see if we can get it moved into this new coop so I think it'll be great to finally have all our animals in one spot right now we're outside trying to take care of the animals in the weather and in the rain and it would be nice to actually be inside here in this dry bottom level of this barn to be able to take care of our animals this will be way nicer in the setup to take care of the animals in this barn than outside so this would be a great setup that's it guys thanks for watching I'll see you guys in the next video this is a test so you look really good [Applause] [Laughter] I can't believe you're trying to kill spiders oh it's on the ground you're hilarious it's just a spider it's huge you did get it okay you did get job there
