howdy howdy chris here and welcome back to another episode of garage doors where i teach you how to build your skill and increase your knowledge about paint and body repair on this episode of garage noise we're going to take a first look at the iwata kawami 4. i'll run through the specs on this gun how to set it up and then we'll put it to the test spraying a tundra hood we'll also do a fan pattern comparison between other guns in its price range and then a few other guns like a budget gun and some more expensive guns this is going to be an amazing episode so let's get in the garage and get started iwata is well known for manufacturing a great paint gun now this is the budget line of guns it runs right just over 200 for the body of the gun no cup no regulator in fact i think you only get a brush with it you may not even get a tool iwad has been manufacturing quality paint guns for many many years and they're well known for the fine atomization these guns achieve this gun has a 1.3 tip it weighs 15.8 grams it feels good in my hand very slim fits my hand well okay so we're going to do a spray out comparison between the iwata koami the sego 3300 gto the 3m performance and the astro pneumatic evo t-13 that's a budget gun just over 100 these two are around the same price range with just over 200 and this one runs about 350. all these guns have their different characteristics some perform better in different areas so we're going to compare these to the iwata and see how it performs today so let's do a spray out right now so the first gun we're going to start with is 3m performance so i got a little tape measure here we'll measure six inches out i'll put the first one right here six inches away nice good size fit spray pattern actually a very large spray pattern six inches out we'll do that again nice uniform spray pattern right here large spray pattern surprisingly large for 3m performance now let's do a spray test on the cigola 3300 gto this is a good all-around gun it's always i've always thought it had a really huge spray pattern so let's see six inches away [Music] nice even real similar to the 3m [Music] nice uniform either one of these spray fan patterns are great and i went ahead and cleaned these guns made sure they were clean and sprayed properly before we started this test now let's test out the astro evo t13 this is a budget spray gun runs just over a hundred dollars six inches away right there cap's a little crooked but nice uniform spray pattern not quite as large as the segola or the 3m but i really wouldn't expect it to be let's do one more there you go gun does not spray like it has a small spray pattern actually space really good running this at 29 psi fan pattern wide open nice and uniform looks a little heavy on top and bottom but you probably dial the air pressure or the fan pattern back a little bit and that would correct that six inches so let's take a look what we have here the iwata kawami good size spray pattern i mean i think that's a good let's measure it 11. i'm going to say you could almost say 12 but it's about 11 12 the uh astro evo t13 you know it's about a 10 10 inch spray pattern this wow i'm going to say the skull is about scale of 13 to 14. not that this really matters that much but i'm just curious and then the 3ms 13 to 14. it looks like the kiwami that's going on 3m are all about the same the evot is a little smaller but all these are going to perform well i really like how this kiwami is very uniform 3m as well and the 3m performs really well so so now let's put the kiwami to the test and spray out a hood and a fender with it and us we'll see how it performs real life situation and we'll take a look at the finished product so let's paint a couple parts with this kiwami i've set up a hood a fender and a bumper cover we're going to wipe it down with a static eliminator this is made by roberlo it just wipes on and hopefully it'll eliminate some trash from getting in the paint job setting up the awata gun i've got the fan pattern wide open i've got the volume control turned four turns out which is practically wide open now this gun recommends 30 to 50 psi in air pressure i have it set at 29. i have the volume set at four turns out that means there's a good amount of material coming out of this gun so i'm moving swiftly across the panel we want one good wet coat for our first coat of base and i like the way this iwata is laying the base down on this bumper nice and smooth uniform looks good so let's move on to the hood now i started off painting the right edge of this hood getting that edge covered and then i did the top edge and then i started working my way down into the middle of the hood overlapping my passes 70 percent you want to overlap so you get a good uniform finish in your metallics now i can you can really see the spray pattern here on this iwatakawami and how fine that paint is coming out of the gun so it's atomizing very well i've decided to hang this hood up vertically so hopefully we have less trash land in our paint job so if you're at home doing a project anytime you can paint a panel vertically it's going to be your best option to eliminate some of that trash that might fall in that panel [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] and here's a good look at the fender after we have two coats of base on it you can see that the paint is nice and uniform it's not blotchy at all it's nice and smooth so then what i did is i went over it with the tack rag i did notice a few little particles of dust so how to how i corrected that was a little bit of 2000 grit sandpaper and i lightly went over that and knocked those down and then i'll tack this again and i put one more coat of base on this before we started the clear coating process [Music] time to see how this kiwami lays down the clear the clear we're using today is the nason 498 clear coat this is a 4 1 clear coat i think i'm using a slow activator here we're going to mix up six parts of this we're going to have to need some more to finish this job we'll get this mixed up and start laying some clear whenever i get a new paint gun i'll just start my settings off where i usually spray and then we'll adjust from there so i have my fan pattern wide open i'm running the air pressure at 29 psi on this and i have my volume to three turns out from closed and then we'll make an adjustment if we need to i'm going to evaluate how this clear is laying on the panel we want one good wet coat we're not totally concerned about how it looks at this point we'll correct any inconsistencies in the clear in the second coat [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] after the first coat of clear the clear coat's coming out very nice and the kiwami is really atomizing that clear and laying it out nice and smooth and flat and it's pretty easy to work with i mean you have to fine tune this gun just a little bit i still don't have it perfectly the way i want it as far as the setup and the settings i still am playing with that a little bit this is i think only the second job i've painted with this gun but overall it's atomizing the clear really well and just laying down a beautiful finish now we're going to put on the final coat of clear this is the appearance coat this is when you lay down that clear how you want it to look in the end so you notice i'm slowing down just a little bit taking my time watching that clear lay down on this pan by slowing down a little bit it's going to allow this clear to flow out a little bit and be a flatter finish now you don't want it to flow so much that you have a run so be careful let's finish this final coat of clear and then we'll take a look at this kiwami gun what i like about it and how it compares to other guns in its price range [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] the final result spraying with this kiwami gun is the finish came out beautifully i'm really happy with it there is a little bit of trash in this hood we're going to cut and buff this hood and a few little particles in the fender but as far as the hood it has a little bit more texture than i like and that's because i had a little bit too much volume coming out of the gun when i sprayed my base and got a little bit too much texture in my base now the fender flowed out beautifully and this is the type of finish or results that we want out of this kiwami gun and we want it every time there are a few little particles of dust so we're going to cut and buff that but overall this gun is a high quality gun made by a company that produces high quality products and for just over 200. this iwata kawami gun is a bargain now i will say if you are a beginner and you're purchasing this gun this is a good gun to grow into as a painter now it does have a learning curve with it so it may take a little bit of practice to get it dialed in the way you want it now how does it compare to the other guns the 3m gun is the perfect gun for the di wire that is the gun i would recommend it's a little bit more money but it's very easy to use and very user friendly especially for someone just starting out the iwata kawami and the segola 3300 gto are both in the same price range at just over 200 both are going to produce an elite finish now i believe that the segov 3300 is a better all-around gun for clear coat and base but not by much it's a little bit more difficult to dial in the clear coat for a nice flat finish but both of these guns are well worth the money four great guns for your hard earned money i hope you enjoyed this video if you did like and comment down below we'll see you next time on garage noise
