[Music] [Applause] it was 30 years ago that they turned off the lights in a rink in a small town in ben czechoslovakia it was a desperate dumb move to try to stop one of the most infamous brawls in international hockey history the punch-up in piastani the best person to tell this story someone who is right in the middle of it brendan shanahan [Music] so the lights were turned off in piercedani i did some things i'm still not proud of the official the arena was completely black when asked i tried to describe to people just how dark it was there were no emergency lights or even moonlight seeping in through the windows it was so dark you couldn't even see the face of the person you were wrestling with we began the tournament slowly and because of some great last minute comebacks had clawed our way back into gold medal contention we just needed to beat a beatable russian team by a few goals at this particular tournament the russians were an angry semi-starred bunch they were sitting in about sixth place and rumor had it their coaches weren't feeding them after every game as a form of punishment but because it was round robin four man we had to face them in the tournament finale we were leading four to two we were getting lots of chances to build on that lead we felt it was just a matter of time before we blew it wide open but truthfully we didn't see this coming the fight started in front of the net to our left suddenly it was two fights then three we're all standing on the bench shocked suddenly from our right two soviet players jump on and steam past our bench in order to join the fight and that was the switch in almost all bench clearing brawls 90 of the players on the ice don't actually fight they clear the benches but generally most look for another non-fighter to pair up with and they watched the main events while the soviets didn't get that memo looking back they were a tinderbox a team looking for trouble but i will admit we were not a team of angels either if you really look at the video you can see some bad stuff happening the brawl had sucker punches kicks two-on-ones head butts [Applause] [Music] i had never heard an arena sound like that it sounded like a riot was occurring in the stands but when someone decided to turn the lights out in that blackness it sounded like a riot and stampede when the lights went out what really went through my mind was someone wants us to do what we need to do to end this thing when the lights came back on soviet player i was tangled up with well let's just say i'm glad i never had to face him again i do owe that man an apology i don't know what the international rule book calls for in this situation it's never hit right after we pause for this message [Music] [Applause] [Music] well we had a real skirmish just moments ago following a face-off it all started when santa claus and chester reek off the [Applause] [Music] right [Music] [Applause] getting their helmets off [Applause] is [Applause] and now one of the soviet players [Applause] this [Music] are fighting they don't know how to deal with a situation like this [Applause] [Music] i don't know what they're going to do obviously is ready to go again with dallas there you see sean simpson he has the backup goaltender down there [Applause] [Applause] this is not permitted [Music] [Applause] [Music] but what a skirmish this is [Music] [Applause] this is far from over now they're putting the lights down [Applause] they're trying to turn the lights off and they strip them off they have struck the right spot [Music] i've never seen anything like this even in the national hockey league i can't recall as many real fights taking place most times it is just a pushing and shoving battle [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and they really went at them [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] here in the building are shopping we want hockey it's going to take some complete reorganization there'll be some committee work going on at some meetings i see the officials down there now the penalty black syria are calling for the officials of the tournament as to how to deal with it you'll notice the clock shut off the clock shut off and sit back at zero now i don't know which team was the first to leave the bench i was watching i was watching the action down in the corner involving santa pass but i think canada may have been the first off the bench no i think i don't like i want to sound like a homer but i think when the fight was on the one russian player jumped out over and he was just about four or five feet was on the ice at least and then the canadians came [Music] well one soviet player may have been the first on the ice but the entire canadian bench then came out the fans are yelling no no hockey hockey hockey and being interesting how they specifically deal with this problem right now there's no officials on the ice to handle it the officials went off the ice fortunately the players themselves stopped the fighting and now now they are going to the bench now i don't know what the international rule book calls for in this situation it's never happened oh no i as a matter of fact i think there's going to be some decisions after because based on the fighting rules you talked about don if there's a fighting role hey they all have to go i know steve nemeth just went in where the referees are to get the referee i wouldn't be surprised if the game is over i wouldn't be at all surprised if the game is called the russians knew they have no chance they're out of it right and you you're right you never saw them uh ever fight before but they they're smart i've never said a russian is dumb they're not dumb they've got nothing to lose they knew that we had to win by five have you ever seen them fight back they were goading our guys all the time and we do not accept high sticks we do not uh spears in the back it's our canadian nature not to take that stuff the russians were smart giving them a job hoping they'd start something like that they were the first off the bench and we fell right into it and i know it's you again you people sitting home in your living rooms having it all nice and quiet maybe having a pop or two or a sandwich or something you see some how could these fellows do that you don't know what they've been through over there and what they're going through so don't say it's a black mark against our players please it's a black mark against international hockey i'm not saying it's a black mark against canada right now because we don't know who started this fight but it is a black mark against international hockey this this was an ugly fight well let me just put it this way to you the russians sent his players on what and there were their whole players were out there we had uh five guys out there six guys out there and say about 18 guys were beaten up in five what would you think of bert templeton that he had to send the guys on the guy the peop the team that goes on first is a team i've always said this in the national hockey league too i've always said this the team that goes on first should the team that should really be racked all right we're going to see a highlight hold it for just a minute fellas don i'm not laying blame because we weren't there what i am saying was this was a vicious fight the officials were out of control i'm surprised someone didn't get hurt well they they yeah i know you saw all that they're fighting and everything but as you saw most of the guys had their gloves on i mean some of them didn't know the russians didn't know how to fight all the russians going out of the fight they were fighting with their gloves on how are you going to get hurt they were pawn at one another when it looked bad they were wrestling around the worst part of the whole thing was one of our guys had a russian and as the russian went down he kicked him in the stomach now that stuff that guy should really get it we're never going to agree on this the russians i'm not saying it's great but somebody could have got hurt absolutely all right don let's take a look at the incident that supposedly started this brawl tonight in peace danny here it is guy well i think it starts when the the russian goalie makes the save and one of our guys came in it's been going on and on a little shot this is where well i don't know right here but just before that a little shot yeah i see me knocks him down what's the matter with that there was nothing wrong with that a little check now what happens now the guy comes in and gives the guy a little shot now there wasn't much you see the russian take the first shot and knock our guy down now there you are there it is right there there's 12 pointing at him he did it now what are you supposed to do to that there was the guy was standing there the guy gave him a shot knocked him down so what are you supposed to do we've had an interesting call don from a viewer don whitman and sherry bassen saying this is the first time they can recall this happening in international hockey a viewer has called our control center here in toronto saying that the soviets were involved in a bench clearing brawl with the czechoslovakian team in 1978 two years ago in 1984 with the americans and both those fights occurred in prague czechoslovakia well like i said earlier the russians got nothing to lose they're laughing i mean this was this was planned there's no doubt about it the russian coach he he never fed his players for a couple of days he'd be drinking uh water and bread in siberia after this game but he's got nothing to he's got nothing to lose send him out have a little thing canada is going to i'll tell you canada's going to end up in the short end of this i'll tell you i'll tell you something whichever team left the bench first the coach is definitely to blame because in international hockey we should explain again to the viewers the players have to go past the coach to get to the ice that's that's the old story i remember when i was over there in 80 in in sweden they told me that i had to have the bench in the back and i had to stand in front we went got screwdrivers ripped the thing up put it in front stood in back because if you've noticed during the game the canadian team is always standing up next to the boards looking out so you have them for two hours standing up looking over the boards you should always have you should take those benches up for you coaches that ever go over it again take them out put them stand back like we do and the guys can hop over and away they go sure it's a russian's fault absolutely you send the guy on first he's the guy that should pay we have had literally hundreds of calls from you people from british columbia to newfoundland all the way up to the yukon wanting to see the beginning of this fight now we're not glorifying fighting we're not going to play the entire brawl but journalistically i think it is right to go back and take a look at where it appeared that this fight started if we can roll that video together well don cherry let's have one more look at this which happened about 45 minutes ago i don't know where you say appeared brian i don't know where you get that look we've cleaned the ice and everything but we're going now watch they're going in the corner here and be while they get it wrong i'm just saying canadian kids will not take what comes up we've been brought up not with to slap in the face and punch the nose we do not take stuff like this now what he didn't do anything he just went to the guy watch him get up and punch him with a nice left right to the thing now who started the fight now who what are you supposed to do since we're three or four years old we do not take punches in the mouth like that all right calm down let's keep that by the way wait a minute keep the p yeah okay we're going to see it again and by the way when we went off this here the last time i told you gunner schmunner would give us and we'd come out in the short end did it not say that everybody was talking to games not a matter of coming out on the short and both teams should be thrown out i'm not talking about that whose fault is it i'm getting here black mark because you know canada will get blamed for this canada will get blamed for it the russians won't get blamed do you know that it's coming up here there's no question that both teams should be blamed for this incident regardless of who started it on there's no justification i'm going to shock people out there i'm going to shock people out there and i'm going to say it because i want to say they asked me on here i'm going to say it if i had a big coach in there and bert's going to take a lot of heat from this bert templeton's going to take a lot of heat he never had them under control i will say this if he hadn't sent his players over there when 19 russians were out there then he wouldn't have been a man now he's going to feel bad he lost the medal in the whole thing like that but i'd like to ask him when we're having a pop in a week if he would have felt better keeping his team on the bench and watching the russians beat up the five no way so we didn't get the medal but at least we stood up for it both teams have been disqualified and that is as it should be a disgraceful incident there's no justifying it i don't care who went over the boards first it appears the soviets did i'm not blaming the canadians both teams are wrong both teams have been disqualified and they should be disqualified we talk about the feelings of these young men these young men had better learn and learn quickly you don't go through life conducting pure four brawls stay with us sports weekend we'll continue right after this [Music] you
