arguments misunderstand negative feedback consciously provoke feedback you want self-handicap like fail purposely a self-esteem protection in the beginning of the J you two Porter The Once and Future thing were introduced to two contrasting relationships a physics Professor David getting shouted at by his wife who is unimpressed by his invention of time travel stupid little man and Batman and Green Lantern chilling in the cafeteria teasing each other I'm very happy uhhuh on one hand these moments sets a comedic tone where absurd characters Technologies and situations exist with humorous mundanity literally a reality disturbing threat is in produced through a guy trying to escape his wife I can use it to get away from you but on the other hand both moments triangulate around a common experience self-esteem maintenance this then becomes the backbone of the entire [Music] Journey something changing your mind sure you don't want one of these [Music] positive collection bunch of junk after a lifetime of having his life trample on him David uses his new almost omnipotent position to indulge in the worst side of himself I go to the trouble of taking over the whole city so I have a nice place to keep my collection and it's a beautiful collection D he becomes Kronos a coldblooded psychopath who has his wife's mother locked up and kills his own subordinates for betraying him rest in peace chuu oh FY furthermore to protect his self-esteem he now exclusively forms low opinions of anyone who criticizes him and mixes with people of lower status this is because he still thinks his wife could somehow be interested in his collection and him in general as he is because a loser with a kingdom is still just a loser but nowadays she has to pretend she does in order to avoid his wrath the problem here is well of course she's not helping but he has this image of himself he can't let go a great collector and the use of his powers now is about creating a protective canopy I mean just look at the way he sleeps however the problem of being defensive as n bom and DW argued it restores lost self-esteem without addressing the underlying cause of the negative feedback which in turn means the person has only adjusted to the problem not confronted them speaking of avoidance here's Bruce and John anyway why are we always talking about my love life what's going on between you and Diana this one minute scene is technically a joke absurd costume characters are having lunch like normal work colleagues but it features a a very nuanced interaction Bruce is asking how John is coping with his heartbreak because on one hand despite his cold exterior being sensitive to heartbreak is something he always relates to the most mysterious creatures in the universe sorry women don't be too hard on yourself you didn't know she was spoken for how did you it wasn't hard to figure out the point is these things happen you just have to deal with it on the other hand he's also like a little boy asking Zer brother about girls to vicariously through him John is dating conventionally while balancing his duty Bruce really wants to his excuse is that he's too busy but in reality he doesn't think he's good enough despite Diana's interests I don't have time to pursue a relationship you're a princess from a society of immortal Warriors I'm a rich kid with issues lots of issues Diana is a remarkable woman she's a valued friend she's standing right behind me Isn't She to teasing in itself is a form of oppositional information that's contradictory to their self-concepts you know the busy Dark Knight who deep down inside once more the space cop who thinks he knows what he wants but actually denying the fact that he's picked the wrong woman both guys are drowning in feelings resisting the truth but both are still at least being exposed to the cause of these feelings through the fact that they're teasing each other uhhuh they're then exposed to more than they expect Through Time Travel the Tarter is bisected by two very different adventures and tones the first is just delightful they team up with Jonah Hex and some obscure DC old west characters to fight the dude who stole kronos's stuff the whole final battle just captures the same childlike Joys you have with mixing your toys together your cowboy figure smashing your robot toys smashing your tanks smashing your superheroes and I just realized smashing might be a poor choice of words however in context with the second part the fun is actually here to actively disable you with goof so you're not prepared for what's next the heroes are basically powerless in the future because the Joker are so upgraded the Watchtower was destroyed and all that's left are static shark 65 is the new 30 Teran Warhawk there's two recurring themes in the story Legacy and camaraderie camaraderie and whenever they go there's always more comrades let him man needs to balance his own accounts Legacy in the form of Bruce meeting his future self and his secret son not now great both then experience the horror of seeing Diana erased while JN learns that he'll have a son with the woman who broke his heart they both experienced the reality that they've both been denying this whole time and in doing so they become less resistant with the truth what are you supposed to do when you have the weight of the world on your shoulders plant your feet JN loves his son Bruce lightens up a bit knowing he'll live a bit longer when they come back Batman quickly asks Diana if she remembers her Adventure she doesn't complicates things both guys begin to process everything like the scar on Jon's bold head nothing's quite the same anymore The Once and Future things about all these dudes who uses various excuses to have some control of their lives from the women they can't help but to obsess over being confronted by the reality that none of it actually holds weight in the future Batman's excuses of being too busy or oh she's just a colleague and I'm not good enough doesn't make any sense when he's the one who will outlive everyone Jon's supposed happiness is dispelled by the discovery that when his broken heart forgives to woman who broke it it will bring a good man like Warhawk to the world someone he'll enjoy being a father to get away from my care both characters grow by a few inches not not in that way whereas krono still thinks he can impress his wife even though she'll never give a about his collection he would rather rewrite existence from the beginning than change himself you'll love me next time as a result it's rather symbolic that ends with Bruce sitting with Diana Jon looking at shyira without lying to himself this time and David literally living in a loop perhaps the best way to work with oppositional information is to grow as opposed to maintain ourselves and perhaps the best way to be delivered oppositional information is through a friend and perhaps I should stop saying and perhaps anyways Bruce and John they're an underrated [Music] Duo I am so confused right now baby do it work for us do it work for us and I guess it's over now baby did it work for us did it work for [Music] us so this video basically replaced my planned atom e video because I wanted to release that alongside the Invincible comic retrospective so I dug out my year old notes on this two-part episode with the assumption that it would be a fairly straightforward easy to write episode analysis and then I ended up spending well over a week on it rewriting it from scratch like four times because initially I wanted it to be about the themes but then the lack of traditional act structure made it too hard to figure it out then it was about the various storytelling techniques to keep the tone together but then I realized I don't think anyone would be really interested in that so of course I went back to the wrong board and and focused everything on the characters the big realization I had was the moment between John and Bruce being the only people who remember everything and I realized bam focus on that relationship and contrast it with Kronos and I kind of like everything just sort of fits
