today we're looking at a sega master system i have not featured one of these on the channel before yet and this one was purchased from ebay advertised is non-working it's got some sort of issue with its cartridge port so let's take a look at what they sent us i actually don't have any cartridges for the master system so that's pretty cool this is one of the main reasons i was eager to put on this console even though it doesn't come with any controllers a little rf adapter the original power supply and the master system itself the system was advertised as non-working because the cartridge based games don't work it should otherwise power on and play the internal game just fine so we'll go ahead and test it out and we'll see what we're dealing with not sure if i can see what's going on in that corner there it looks like there's something out of place you will definitely get a better look at that when we open it up okay let's power it up and see what it does so i'm just going to borrow these from my genesis model one [Music] power is plugged in tv on it's already on the right input and let's hit that power button nice so let's try the built-in game i believe the trick is to press both buttons and up and the controls are working fine i can move this little snail around okay so let's go ahead and try it with the cartridge and see what it's doing it's not reading the cartridge and that cartridge looks super clean it does look like we have an issue with the cartridge board on the system so let's go ahead and open it up let's flip the system over the top cover should slide right off [Music] now unless my eyes are playing tricks on me it looks like there's something something in there what is that i really doubt that this is the issue because whatever little residue stuck on here it's kind of like on the plastic part it's not on doesn't look like it's on the metal pins before moving any further let's just shower the port with some contact cleaner and see if that has any difference i will be generous with what i'm spraying in there because i don't think it hurts all right that made absolutely no difference let's try it one more time yeah it's not loading games from cartridge okay well let's continue taking this thing apart looks like the top shield is free let's continue and extract the board from the bottom case [Music] [Music] let's just examine the board up close and see if anything jumps out and we'll start by focusing on the cartridge poured area the traces in this area look pretty good let's look at the back of that cartridge port hmm all the pins look good few minutes later what is that is that normal no whoa oh there's a broken trace right there and this one they're all broken it almost looks like all these traces are lifted wow oh man yeah that one's broken right there put the whole tweezer underneath it oh man this one's completely lifted completely lifted completely lifted oh boy uh this is going to be a bit of a tricky repair job i'm just trying to think of the best way to approach this so that it's a lasting repair and i think it might just be a matter of like scraping every single one of these lines back on both sides and flowing the solder there's a good 40 traces here that would need to be repaired i need to think about this for a while a little longer than a few minutes later all right this is gonna be one hell of a job let's start scraping i don't think it makes sense to do a continuity test pin by pin and make a map of what's broken so that we can check later so many of these traces are severed that i might as well just work on everything and then do a continuity test pin by pin at the end and make sure all the traces are going where they need to go so that's looking pretty good let's go ahead and just clean that up with some ipa i think i'm going to need the fume extractor for this because it's going to be a bit of a nasty job i'm going to use the narrow j-tip let's tin the tip all right um and this is where we have traces that are severed from both sides we might need a jumper wire here [Music] let's clean up and look at that first pass see how it turned out so for the most part it is working to bridge the pins to the adjacent traces in a couple of areas especially in this center area i could kind of see the uh remainder of the via just kind of floating so when it got hot enough instead of bridging the way that the rest of these did it would just like float around so you guys can see that i removed one right here and i removed this one as well we're gonna have to bridge them with some some wire all right guys i think i have inhaled enough flux fumes for one evening so i'm gonna pause here and i'll pick this up tomorrow and carry on with the trace repair work the next day all right everybody let us continue this lovely repair so the only thing that i did off camera is clean up the uh area that we worked yesterday just removed the sticky flux residue that was there we might have our work cut out for us as you can visibly see a lot of these pins are not making connection on one side or the other and that's just because the pad is completely severed so there's going to be a ton of patchwork today let's find some stranded wire now there's nothing special about the wire i use it's just gauge stranded wire and we're going to separate the strands to get the well you guys get the idea so let's break off a few of those and just get them ready so that's what we're gonna do our repairs with so in terms of approaching this in somewhat of a systematic way since we have a lot of pins to repair in the center area i'll just arbitrarily select this ground right here and work my way around to make sure each of the pins have continuity where they're supposed to so to save myself a little bit of work while i'm soldering i'm just going to go ahead and scratch off the solder mask from some of these vias so that they can be our anchor points for the barge wire let's check the first few pins over here okay so pins one through four are making contact pin five onwards i believe the traces are severed at least all the way up to this ground plane yeah these are all severed all right let's see about getting a wire in there [Music] let's do a quick continuity test continuity no continuity no continuity all right that's one down and about 20 more to go [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] i think we're ready to test guys that's every trace on the board it's time to hook this puppy up av cable power cable fell down controller let's power the tv on i have the cartridge right here let's just first power this guy up make sure it still works and it does great now come on baby that's amazing all right man that's amazing [Music] oh man this brings back memories that's amazing guys i've never had to do that much patchwork to repair a system my favorite nail polish pcb green as one of you guys called it on a prior repair and this is just a uv curing lamp and let's just get this uv lamp on it let's see how we're doing that is definitely cured time to put this thing back together i did just kind of dust this off with the air compressor get those fingerprints off and the top case let me clear up the desk and then we'll hook this guy up to the tv just for one final test i know the master system wasn't a very popular system but a bunch of my friends actually owned one and we exchanged cartridges and games all the time i hope you guys enjoyed this repair as much as i did it was super fun to work on a system that i haven't worked on before and in fact i have another couple of systems on the way should be arriving any day now both of which i've never worked on or featured on the channel before so thanks again for coming along for the repair guys and i will see you again soon take care
