We didn't know which theater --Where --And when exactly --It's going to the Winter Garden Theatre in the spring. So exciting. Of course School of Rock is there now. They're closing in January. We don't have exact dates yet, but it will preview in March and open in April just in time for you know what .... --The Tony Awards. --Thank you --Hey Beth who's in it? Good cast. --Oh, I love when you question me. Alex Brightman. We've already told you the cast, but will remind you. The Girl from the North Country. You're a bit Conor McPherson fan. -- I am, and this is Bob Dylan music. --Is that what it is? It's a play with Bob Dylan songs? --Yes --Woven in? --Correct --Like that Broadway musical. --A different story. --But different. This one is extended again so it was supposed to run through November 4th, and what? It starts September, oh it starts next week Beth! --I've already booked my starts September 11th. It opens on October 1st. It's a big hit. Hey Mark Kudish is in it! --Another Broadway favorite --We know him. Mara Winningham, Stephen Bogardus David Pitou. This is gonna be good. But where is it? --It's at the Public --We're live! We're live. Did you know that? --Great, and we found out who's gonna be the best boss off-Broadway. --Okay. So there's a new thing that's happening now. --It's a thing --Parodies of TV shows off Broadway. They did Friends. Now they're doing The Office --I feel like there's always four guys doing the Golden Girls somewhere, too. That's always happening --That's always around That's definitely at least in someone's apartment. So, but here's this here's a little twist, Sarah Mackenzie Barron will make her New York --Speaking of gender-bending --Stage debut thank you as Michael Scott. --Yeah -- I guess you also look at camera like huh she's been in a lot of regional productions: Medea, The Taming of the Shrew, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. What do those things have in common not much. --She was in em --She was in them. She's joined by Michael Santora, Tom McGovern, Taylor Coryell Katie Johanden, and if I said that wrong I'm sorry Katie, and Rebecca Mason Weigel Performances began at off-broadway's Theatre Center on September 20th. How are they going to do this. It's actually off-Broadway's ... Theatre Center. --Okay I don't --Instead of saying Snapple. It used to be the Snapple Theater Center --Oh! Okay now I know where --But then the Snapple fell off the sign --So now it's just the Theater Center. I like to leave a space for Snapple --I think we're all really buoyant today --It's above Duane Reade on 50th. The Snapple --The Mueller sisters are here and we're giddy. That's what's happening That's what's happening. -- Yes and this is a week full of new diners wait no new Baker's hitting the diners, --Hey! You know who knows something about the role of Jenna in Waitress, Jessie Mueller --Oh she does? How does she know that? --She got a Tony nomination for originating that role. And the national tour is a big hit. And Desi Oakley has been playing the part, and she will finish on September 27th and Christine Dwyer is taking over. She's an Elphaba, guys. You all know the Elphabas. Yeah she was Elphaba on Broadway and on the tour and she just did the tour of Finding Neverland. That's right. So, she will be the new Jenna in Waitress and she's gonna sing that beautiful Sara Bareilles score. Congratulations! --And an acting icon is receiving a huge honor. --This is big. This is big: Cicely Tyson, who of course is a Tony winner, is receiving an honorary Oscar. This is a woman of the stage and screen. --Does she have an actual Oscar? --She does not. She was nominated in 1973 for Sounder, but she never actually won one. She so yeah honorary Oscar takes place on November 18th in Hollywood. Of course she won a Tony for the Trip to Bountiful in 2013 and has been in loads of Broadway shows most recently The Gin Game. I think she's 93. --That's exciting --And she's amazing, so congratulations Miss Tyson --She watches. --I know she does. --Hey, Beth. Let's make way for the Mueller sisters. Hey Caitlyn, why don't you tell us more about these lovely ladies? --Oh willingly yes guys today we have a Jessie and Abby Mueller here with us. We are so excited because these are super super talented sisters who are both starring on Broadway right now at the exact same time. It is beautiful. And so Jessie she recently earned a Tony nomination for her current role as Julie Jordan in Carousel, and she has previously been on Broadway in On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, Nice Work If You Can Get It, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Waitress and Beautiful, which was she won a Tony Award for and that also is the reason why her sister also is now starring in that same role. How mind blowing is that? Also Abby she was in Beautiful on tour and she was in Kinky Boots on Broadway. So basically we just have so much talent here. It's insane. We're excited. Leave all your questions in the comments down below and be sure to follow Carrouselbway to k-state up-to-date on everything that Jessie's doing and follow Abby ABCmule with two L's so you can know everything that these talented sisters are doing. Everyone please welcome Paul Jessie and Abby! --Hi, Ladies! --Yes. --Hi How you doing --Hi Paul --You are? --Nice to meet you --Good to have you laadies here! --We love it. --Thanks for having us. -- We brought our beverages. --It's very hot. --Stay hydrated. --Is that the secret to the Mueller singing --Sure. --Sure, it helps --Coffee. --[laughs] So you guys ever see each other or just like once it's just Christmas or --Yeah we picked --Sometimes we pick dates at the beginning of the year and then we --Stick to --This is actually fun because we're in --We don't see each other that much. --We stay kind of busy sometimes in the Broadway --That 8 show a week thing. -- So this is yeah --It's going well for the Mullers --Keeps you busy --The Muellers of Chicago --This is an acting dynasty this is like right right? --Is that what we said? --It started with Roger and Jill Roger and Jill yes? Mom and dad. Don't look at me like that. You're entire family of actors, right? -- Yes. --It's in your genes. It's a thing. --It happened. --It's a thing. --Yeah we don't know how it happened but it's true --Yeah. It just seemed sort of normal, I guess --So, it was obviously a rule when you were children it was like you were you will act! Is that what happened? Or did one of you... --It was pretty much --Jump in first? --Wouldn't you say? --No, it actually wasn't. They were like go ride your bike. You're not auditioning for that. --We didn't really do anything until like high school. We started doing plays in high school. I think all four of us did. Before that, they were like, we don't want to drive you to wander since that's too much work. Cuz it's a lot of work! --Yeah --And my mom will fully admit that. So we did other stuff and then we all sort of came to it later in life, I would say. --Yeah so let's let's get the the Carole King thing out of the way. So, you guys isn't it crazy you both know Carole King and she knows you. --It's crazy I think so --It is weird. Yeah you think of other people you thought you might meet in your life and she wasn't one of them. --Wouldn't be like high on your list of the people you would get to know. --Well, sure, but you just don't, this is what I love about life is stuff is even cooler than you thought could happen. --You can't plan stuff like that. --Especially this whole the whole Beautiful this whole situation. I don't even know what to call it. --Let's talk about the situation. So, Jessie you obviously opened in the show on Broadway, created the role. No one else had done it before. You won a Tony Award. --Yes! Yes. --I thought you would bring it around with you --Yeah, it's in my other bag, --Other purse --And then you did the role, you did a Broadway.com vlog by the way, thank you for that. We always it's even more --I did that's right! famous than Bustle Fluffer. Look it up --Just all the hits! --You did the role for a long time for a pretty good --Two and a half years --Yes! --Cause we did it in San Francisco too, and didn't you start the tour in San Francisco --No I did my first tour --That's what it was yeah, --So, Abby, you were in Kinky Boots, right, around the same time? --Yes -- I saw you in School Rock didn't I? --Oh --The before before --The pre --Broadway right yeah and so you you were sort of coming on to the Broadway scene and did you think oh wait I want to play that role too? Or like how did this happen it was crazy? --I mean... --No, I didn't. That's the truth --Did you think I'll look really good in that wig too! --Absolutley not. --Her hair is a little bit more like hers than mine is. You've always had better hair. --No it's not. I feel like mine's even straighter than yours. --We both lose, hair-wise but anyway --The wigs are really great --Fantastic. No, the funny funniest story was that actually we were both working in San Francisco, so when she was doing the out of town try out --Yes that's right, --I was doing a regional production of 1776 --Okay --literally next door. --We were staying in the same apartment complex --Oh how cool --Yeah and so I got to see her final dress, and I remember going to see it, and things changed a lot since that final dress --Absolutely -- Different costumes, different song order, but I know I went with with our friend Andrea, I remember being just like my jaw was on the floor. And I was like holy moly! it's astonishing what she's done. And in my mind it was like you know I'm it's really true was like. Well, that's it. That's it. And I'm honestly never it never crossed my mind to be like, Yeah, I'd like to do that too. It really didn't. That's the God's honest truth, so so yeah so it is remarkable that later and you know an audition came up. And I I I swore at my agent. I thought he was joking, I was like no! Why silly. It was actually my our dad that was like, Honey, won't you read those sides. See if there's something that you know you can relate to, someone --You can connect with! --Something to say and it's an audition. I was like and ultimately end up going and I'm really glad I did because this has been such a such an unexpected, huge blessing in my life, but certainly one that neither of us expected. So it is wacky --And it's a privilege cuz you didn't.... I mean that's the amazing thing about new shows you never know what's gonna happen with something or with a piece you work on, but like the fact that and I'm sure you've had people say this to you to like people have written to me and be like I want to play Carol someday you know what I mean? Like that these that you get an opportunity to to put something out in the world that people can connect to. It's yeah a huge blessing --And people just love they love this music so much. -- Yeah --Yeah and they love her, you know, and have you you met her? --Very briefly --Even in a brief meeting, you're like oh you're like oh I get it. She's she's just --I think she's -- she's like a ball of light --an agent of healing. --Yeah she is --I remember was interesting when the show first started, she was kind of avoiding seeing it remember she was kind of like nervous to watch it. --Wouldn't you be? --Yeah --She's like I don't know if I want my life exposed --Whole heart spilled out on a stage, but yeah yeah now certainly it's this story has touched many people the music so many people and so I feel like she's --And you're back, back in the wig --Back in the Broadway! --You did the tour, then you did on Broadway, and you've been how many who is have you performed it how many performances, who's done it more? --Oh gosh I haven't been counting -- I'm pretty sure she still wins. --I want official numbers. --I don't remember how many I did. Lord I haven't been keeping track -- --Started At no --It's probably, I don't know. It'll be almost about two years by the time I'm done, but --I was just thinking about that. I was like actually I feel like maybe we've had about the same amount of time -- I should start a checklist. [laughs] --Do you do a little tick mark? --We started that finally at Carousel. We started the tick marks on the on the flat, behind the flat like how many shows we've done. --Oh, that's smart. --And then we add the 60 previews or whatever we did -- Uh-huh you and you were on TV last week! I saw you singing what was that America's Got Talent? --And you did have talent! --Congratulations you did have talent! Look at that. --People were joking they were like gosh hope you guys get through, and we're like, Guys guys we're no --We're not contestants, you see --Hope we have a little bit of talent. I mean --[laughs] --I didn't think it was in question --Gosh, I just, we're already performing across the country on Broadway, so --I saw those judges jump up! --It was so fun it'll be so fun. It was a huge it was really kind of like a last minute yeah it was so fun. Everybody pulled together crew costumes hair -- I just saw your stage manager, I just saw Stace and she was like that was a whirlwind weekend. --Oh Stace was so she was amazing --And it looked amazing she said a lot of that was like projections and stuff, --They can do anything on --On the television! These days --Give us an LED screen and a --We'll give you a --And a dream and --Magic --Thanks --You guys were great. --So, and that Carousel, that beautiful Carousel. It's in its final weeks. --Ca-rousel, guys you gotta come see it! --At the Imperial Theatre. I am four times, I want everyone to go see Carousel --Thank you --You kids have never seen it, you know it's like a classic and you're a little afraid of it --You gotta check it out! --Almost shamelessly wore like all my Carousel merchandise. My hat --Do you have a lot of merch? Isn't there a June is busting out all over v-neck? --That I don't know --I don't know. There's a lot of merch. --A stick horse? --You can let you could ride the Carousel yourself. I've been working on that. I don't think they sell that. You should work in merch. --Next time. Next time. --Did you get to see Carousel --I did I went to opening night --You went to opening night yeah --It was beautiful She's stunning. Go see it! --Do you guys have favorite, I know people ask this all the time, favorite performances of each other? You've seen each other do you've been in shows together. What have you done together and how much do I need you to do a Side Show revival. I want the Muellers in Side Show! --Well, that's how it works, Paul, is we decide we just want to do it --You sign up you sign up for one of those shows on Broadway see... --Do you sing Side Show around the fireplace on Christmas or... --No, no. --That's really hard. --My mom doesn't really like belting [laughs] --There was a lot of girls it's very pretty could you keep it down in our house --It's pretty, could you just, --What did you do Shanendoah song together? --We did we did Shanendoah together --I know I do my research --[laughs] --What else did you guys do togehter? --Guys and Dolls --Oh right! --Oh! Little Women? --No, we didn't do Little Women. I auditioned for Little Women and I didn't get the part of her sister. --And I auditioned for Meet Me in St. Louis, and it was at the same time. We were doing those shows at the same time. --And didn't we all --And we auditioned to be each other's sisters and neither of us --There's no way you guys look like sisters. --Wasn't there also an instance where we both auditioned to be our father's daughter in a show and neither of us got it. That was funny. --That's the best! --If a role is meant to be your role it will be your role --That's not -- That's why it's true, you can't miss your show and if it's not yours, --It ain't yours --You sure can miss it. --That's fine. --Maybe there should be like a Mueller Christmas Jamboree on Broadway like the whole family --You're thinking like --Get the whole family together --Like Mighty Wind Hootenanny --Yeah, like over at the Imperial just like --I mean I'm down --I would go! --What do we -- I think I have to do a few shows at Beautiful first. --You've got a few things on your plate --Maybe like a New Year's Hootenanny --Maybe like a day off concert --Like a Monday night -- A Monday night show! --A holiday Festival --Let's work on that -- Festival of Holidays --Festival of lights --Lights and Holidays --You we could just do ya Secretary's Day. I mean there's just all kinds of holidays we could really hit, --It's true. --We'll work on this. --Yeah, I'm going to work on the logo I'm gonna do the logo design. [laughs] --I love a good logo design. --We need a good logo design. --So how you feeling Carousel is winding down. How are you feeling --It's getting --Very emotional performance. I don't know how you do that every night. I mean it's so good gut-wrenching. -- Good people that's how --You made me cry --Thanks. I mean, it's bittersweet but it's I'm so pleased and grateful that we've had the time we have had and that and the people who got to see this beautiful show I've met a lot of people who have never seen the show before they didn't know the show that now we're exposed to it, people that have listened to the album that are just grateful to hear the music again. So, I'm so proud of it, and I'm just proud of our group and so grateful that we had the group we did. --THe amazing cast --Jack O'Brian and you know they kind of got all the right people together, and that's it's always nice when that happens. --Yeah that's like --It's half the fun of it you know I mean? The people you come to work with every day -- --What is the backstage going to be like at beautiful cuz when I show has been running that long, you know, it really does become like a good family so it's sort of like you show up and you know like most of the people. --Yeah. It really it's a wonderful wonderful environment over there. They really have welcomed me so warmly, which I really appreciate. It's a good vibe over there. It is. --grateful for, and a nice new building. --Yeah! --Lots of bathrooms --It's the little things --It is! --Those things matter. --What what's different about you guys I mean sure people I mean you seem like very different people to me, but how would you describe like are you like on the same should you be up on the same roles or you have different types? I wanna figure this out. --Is that for us to decide? -- I don't know --I'm gonna say --How would you but how would you describe --I can't convince anyone but we are very different. -- I think so --What I always say that question is it like we we had you know concurrent careers in Chicago before we even came to New York, and honestly that that State Fair story, that was the only time we ever got called in for the same show. --That's true the same role was to play --The daughter of my father and --Didn't book it! --But other than that we never even got called in for the same thing, which I think just speaks to the fact. And it's a slight I mean it's a smaller market, but we are very different. Obviously, we share some --Different hair colors --We both love soup. --Both love soup. Umm, very different phone numbers. --We we do --We have different addresses. I --That's it. --I don't know cuz like I feel like, well, you were asking the question. Maybe we didn't even answer it but I'm always amazed when I i'm blessed that all my family is very talented, and you know I get to see my siblings and stuff, but like like I got to see her in Beautiful. And I didn't know what to expect it. I was like I sort of know this. And I don't and it had been --Sort of? --But it was like no but but even at that point it had been a while, but getting to see you do it I'm like well of course! I'm like, its it of course it's the same role or something, thank God I never had to watch myself do it, but it is so different and so unique because it's you. And you bring the parts of you to the role that I could never bring --Cause all you can do is kind of bring yourself and bring what you bring --All you should do is bring yourself really --Yeah kind of --Trying to bring somebody else, --It's harder --It's a lot harder. --So what I wanted to ask is what were your what are your favorite performances of each other? THAT'S the one everyone always asks you. What is it --No I just like affirmed that was a question. --That was the question --What I said was right right right. --Did you miss that? My favorite well obviously Beautiful. --That's your favor Jessie performance? -- Yeah but I think maybe Brigadoon for you. --Huh but also then then when I saw it Drood, which is like I'd never seen Drood at all, was it's hard to pick just just one. --But Drood --But I just like I was blown away by you in Beautiful and just like how unique it was and I was different it was and how, dare I say, beautiful it was --Aww [laughs] --That's so sweet --Thanks, and it's fun when you know people and then you get, I mean, I even like that about going to see friends shows. When somebody surprises you and you see somebody do something that I don't know maybe you didn't think they could do that you've never seen before. --That's the thing it is like I know it was like you get to know people's --Yeah or when you get lost in it --Yeah when you go who dat --When you get to go see a show of people you know and you're like I'm just watching the show. I'm not watching my friend I'm watching the story. I'm watching the character. --That's the best/ --Yes, it is the best. --Yes . --Hey, Caitlyn are there any questions from the online fans watching? --So many questions yeah so many questions. Okay I'm trying to find let's do a good one. They're all good questions, but okay. Do you guys have any like of similar routines when you go and start a show, like pre-show rituals, do you guys have similarities? --I have no idea what you do --Yeah it's a secret they don't talk to each other their rituals. --We can't disclose this information --Kidding --I don't know if we have any of the same because we probably... well we hopefully yeah warm up. No, I really feel I don't know what your thing, like -- I feel like --You just show up and that voice comes out of you --She's like ahh --I do something different I feel like every --I used to in my younger days. day. --Yeah. I try to just have enough time to get my myself together. And I do yoga and stuff like earlier in the day, I try to have like a morning routine when I wake up to try to get myself right self --Get right get right with myself --Get my head right... we probably put our costumes on. --What do they want to be like, We facetime each other. What do they want to hear you know what I mean? --Bumblebee --Bumble bee, I do a lot of meow-ing --Meow meow meow meow Do you ever meow? --You do? yeah I do a lot of meowing give her meow --Sure! [laughs] --Meowing it's it's a hum it's a hum but absolutely you never do that? Meow! --No! Not like meowing like a cat but just Yeah, you should try it. --Meow --A tip from me to you. --Okay --Actually, one thing, one thing I've never done --Thank you for that question now I know --One thing I've never done before this Lindsay sometimes facetimes me, actually, while we're getting ready haven't had a chance to check in because she's like four floors above me, and I'd never and it's hilarious and or she'll FaceTime me sometimes during the show like when we're in costume and that's really funny because I took a screenshot once just cuz I thought it was --I don't have time to FaceTime anyone during the show, so --You don't you're on the show you're on stage the whole time --Yeah plus I don't think this Wi-Fi is that good --Cause you're in the basement. --The real issue --I gotta try meowing. --Hey, I'm just really glad --Is that an opera thing? --Uh, yeah, Renee Fleming taught me that. --What else you got? --I love that. Tasha asked what is it what it would your advice be to sisters working closely in theater together. --This is a good question is there a competitiveness? Is it are you healthy I mean how do you deal --Are you healthy? --Are you --Are you healthy? --Opinion of each other I don't know it's hard --We can say it's good to give each other a lot of notes, I find. --Like any actor it's good to give but especially your sister give notes --Especially your sister give notes Um, I would say, what advice would we have? --I would say it would be the same advice I would give anybody, which is be yourself, be yourself --Mmhmm yeah --Yes --Everyone else is already taken exactly --Cultivate what you are, what you do --It doesn't matter. That's a tough one to learn though because you're always like oh I got to be this I got to be that or I want it I want to be like so-and-so or, which is great to have like you know --A model or --Models or idols and stuff like that but at the end of the day you can only be the best you you're gonna be cast as yourself, you know. You you're the only thing that you can bring to it so the more that you. --Right, I think just siblings in general sometimes you grow up and that's that's hard because you're always comparing yourself to the people you you know and love and are close to so yeah that's part of growing up is cultivating, trying to cultivate who you are. --Whether it's a sibling or cousin you know yeah -- Anybody you're you sort of --Audra McDonald --Your Audra McDonald --You want to be --Who doesn't want to be her -- Who doesn't --I knew you were going to bring up Audra McDonald . --I still want to be Anika Larson --You're obsessed --You have to bring up Audra McDonald at all times. --I really like this question. Breanna asks what is something both the characters you're currently playing have taught you? --Let's start with Julie Jordan. --Say what you mean and say what you feel. Don't be afraid of using the right word. --Mm! Preach. And I would say, yes, I would say use your voice. --Simmilarities --Use your voice. Don't be afraid to use your voice. And your voice is enough just the way it is. --Mm-hmm --So can these strong women and Julie Jordan is not always thought of as a strong female character. That was an interesting thing this production sort of navigated right? --Yeah. I think all right I think a lot of people's takeaway as she gets labeled as like victim, but I just never saw her that way/ --Right, but these characters do these characters really inform you and can you when you're living these lives every night going onstage I don't know how actors do that every night and I always wonder about sort of the cumulative power of that, when you actually live those lives every night for a period of time. Can it actually have effect on your life? It's a deep question. --Well I was just thinking about this. --Deep for Live at Five, but I'm going there. -- I I certainly think so/ I I cannot... I certainly feel like playing Carol has had a huge influence on my life and my growth. And it's been cool cuz I've gotten to do it at different points in my life. --In your life, right. watched the progression and absolutely. I I'm always trying to learn something new every night and be like just you know like let's some of this sink in. And so I mean not to I I hope I hope I'm growing but I I definitely think that it's integrated, it can be integrated in your life in hopefully a healthy way. And even something with that can be so you know sad and and complicated like a story of Carousel, --Well it's like you said. You bring you bring you to the part. I believe in that too. And then I think there is sort of a takeaway, as well, like I've always feel like I've learned something from the characters. I play that's interesting you say you may and shouldn't excuse me sort of the time of your life you do something. And how that affects it, like, I've actually got I've had connections with the show Carousel at very different points in my life, and gotten to play different parts in it and and I feel like I never could have played Julie until now and if I got the chance to play Julie again in five years I feel like it would be very different. But yeah it's yeah and you have to take care of yourself too because and I feel like I'm still learning how to do that because you you were talking about like an emotional show or yeah you know we know we're acting. We know we're pretending for a living, but you're it's exhausting in your brain in your body and your heart takes it on, especially your body. Your body something that doesn't have a difference. And those nights when you're like is this thing on, like your technique takes over and sometimes you have to create the physical manifestation to create the moment. So you have to take care of your your being, --And your life offstage too. --Your bean... Yes! --And then you can go there and --And then you can like leave it --You can go to a nice clambake eight times a week. --That's the hardest scene, and and I but I think --You can get divorced, and you can go to a clambake.
