Thats quite a cool bit of history.
If anyone is interested, yes the Metro was a sales success, at least in the UK, I don't think export sales amounted to much. It ended up being a very strong competitor for the Ford Fiesta and VW Polo at the time.
It had an unusual suspension system (hydrolast?) which gave it really neat handling without sacrificing comfort. It was sold from 1980 up until about 1997 with only minor changes, quite a long production run, although by the mid 90s it was outclassed by current model Polo and Renault Clio.
