I am the Boz Amir or I'm here I say push things just a little too far the Boz was everywhere was perfect for Madison Avenue he had something that could make himself larger than football before long the Boz became larger than Brian Bosworth I didn't like the boss he wasn't someone you wanted to live with we thought we were losing Brian that we were going to end up with the boss Bob became a monster I was losing control of who I was Andy Warhol Andy Warhol said everybody's gonna have Fame for 15 minutes Dean Brian Bosworth was another rookie bowing to Hughes he was one of the best football player ever seen in my life in college Brian Bosworth was one of the most promising linebackers of the 1980s some people loved the punk persona of the Boz all my life people had the wrong idea about me and many people loved to hate him I think everybody loves to hate the rebel that they can't be this is the man who brought a whole lot to the table not only athletic ability but drum but while the Boz struck a pose Brian Bosworth just wanted to play Brian loved the game of football more than life itself the Boz was the persona they want to be famous I just wanted to be a number on the back of a jersey wow did you see that hit number 55 oh my god you totally knew what he was crafting he was sort of the sports version of Madonna right sure he was born so much was created in a lab somewhere by some sort of mad scientist two decades before the Boz was created Brian Bosworth was born in Irving Texas in 1965 the only son of Kathy and Foster Bosworth Bryan would not accept direction was very daredevil ish he was hell to keep up with a nice day he wore my butt out Bryan started playing Pop Warner football when he was six I was a tough bullying and then when you're playing football you get humble very quickly you're gonna get knocked on your ass and it's gonna hurt his daddy was always very involved and his athletics he wasn't the coach or the assistant coach he was always on the sidelines he's the first boy and the only boy and I had dreams for him he was always I thought too critical of him and I was afraid it was beating down I was pretty hard on him I've got my hand smashed between two head gears and I mean it hurt I looked over my father and told him me I'm hurt I'm hurt I said you know unless you're crippled you don't come out you know so get back out there and play I remember him screaming out at me you know Brian gets your ass up you know we got a play to run Brian raised his game to higher and higher levels but at age 13 he made his biggest play for a girl we were at rival junior high schools and I was on the basketball team and we had a tournament at his school and I see this little bond bouncy thing running down the court we went out the very next weekend Catherine the Castro and Brian remained friends in the next year they became classmates at MacArthur High he did not read coolest things and he had that bowl haircut I was really the uncool kid in school that happened to have you know some athletic ability but for Brian football at MacArthur High was not an easy game to play a lot of confidence problems in high school I had head coach he would tell me that they didn't believe in me which I had contradictory effects on my psyche I'd get so tense and so upset he's so nervous but I used to vomit before every game MacArthur had a mediocre team but Brian became one of the best linebackers in the Lone Star State when we saw him play senior year we knew this guy was an outstanding talent as a football player Brian gained enough confidence to begin romancing Kathryn once again he was just um always approachable always had that sparkle in his eye always mischievous you know always a little bit of a jokester we had this real chemical connection at the same time Brian was being romanced by major college football programs I didn't down deep inside believe that I deserve the offers until coach Switzer came in to my high school cafeteria one day in his full-length mink coat screamed out my name we got along fine he was not born into extra burden and course I was able to communicate with him because of our personalities when the man that I always looked up to as a legend tells me that he wants me to play for his university that was really the first dream that came true Brian committed to the University of Oklahoma the same school that his girlfriend Catherine would be attending he was eager to leave home and escape his father's football tirades when Brian went off to college I said I guess you don't have to listen to that anymore he said mom I always hear this it's always gonna be in my head that's where the rebel didn't walk out the door he exploded at the door on a team trip to Hawaii in 1983 coach Switzer challenged Brian to be the team leader before he had even played a game I knew he had the ability to be a superstar and expected him to be a superstar the high expectations kept brian on an emotional edge and Catherine broke up with him he was very focused and and stressed with football and being younger in our relationship I didn't understand she picked the absolute worst time in my life to break up with me which is that the day before my first game as a freshman I was so bitter and so angry and I felt so alone but I felt like the only way that I was going to make it was to explode I didn't so much make a statement in terms of University of Oklahoma versus the University of Texas as I did Brian Bosworth making a statement Katherine he left the wrong man Brian one Kathryn back and began cultivating a larger-than-life persona the Boz I felt like if I'm gonna rebelled and move on from who Brian Bosworth the high school dorky guy is you know that I went you know 180 degrees the other direction he did change Deena night and day that year six-foot to 240 pound Brian Bosworth became a college superstar at the end of Brian's first season his team won the conference championship but the victory against Oklahoma State that's the first time I'd ever want anything you know meaningful like that my father came in the locker room and you know we hugged each other probably surprised him he surprised me a lot because I'm not usually that way for the first time in my life I told him my father you know approved of me the following season in 1985 the Boz grew even more outrageous the MAS was a personality that was different from Brian Bosworth I interviewed him in college and I thought he was one of the fiercest most intense guys in football you know this brash fast-talking guy you know he had the hair the stats he had the sacks he hits had a lot going for him oh my always saw you filming man this the haircut came after I saw the movie commando I felt like this new and powerful guy talk to me a little bit if we start off about this Baz cut that I've been hearing so much about I thought it was awful it's just one of those hype on haircuts and goes such a little bit amazed at the colors on the side right now and then the next time he came up he had his ear pierced he had to go further with it you know I had to have the earrings and the gold chains and it was really scary for a while the boss the haircut the bandana his whole getup man it was was something that we respected everybody wants to be rounded that boy everybody wants to be just like him and in reality you're not the bad boy you're really the good boy he's just playing the antihero because that's what everybody wants to be deep down inside the girls were just fascinated with this guy you know because they think they saw him as sort of a sexual Mount Everest you know and they wanted a mountain Mount Everest it was really difficult to carry on any sort of public relationship with this guy and privately to the ego went with the whole persona it was getting harder for Brian to separate the boss from Brian that season sports agent Gary was chard watched Oklahoma play got the buzz for the show I was always looking for that media kind of crossover guy that could transcend the sports world Rashard had plans for the Boz and pro football and beyond he said my interest in you is are you interested in making a step after the life of football I figured we lay out this game plan where he plays five years seven years that moves into the film world Brian won the prestigious Butkus Award is the best linebacker in the country in 1985 and his team went on to beat Penn State for the national title that was where the transition started that the bias now became the primary force of Oklahoma and his identity it became more about me that did about the team coming up the Baz struggles the pain stayed with me for a good period of time as knew that something was wrong and later Andy Warhol gets popped if you tried to the unconventional Brian Bosworth one of the nation's top linebackers in 1986 University of Oklahoma linebacker Brian Bosworth made big hits on the college gridiron his off the field persona the Boz was an even bigger hit adios amigos you're on your own now were above the law it's welcome to Russia I love Brian Bosworth sometimes I didn't like the damn laws but I love my own Bosworth I didn't like the boss the Boz was disrespectful of other people and their feelings and thoughts it wasn't someone you wanted to live with the real Brian was still that studies you know stable guy underneath and I think that's what was um so difficult for people to understand in his junior year 21 year old Brian won a second Butkus Award was nominated for the 1986 Heisman Trophy he and his agent publicized the Boz to the max when Brian came up for the Heisman Trophy announcement we'd walk down a street his people screaming the Boz the Boz you know they're just like freaking out over the guy Brian was looking forward to showcasing the Boz in the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day 1987 but days before the big game Brian failed an NCAA test for steroids back then Sturridge was a was a way of life that's the way a football like the way the game is played you can't do it as a normal person Boz built himself into a big strong fast machine and he paid the consequence for it and we told him anyone tested positive would be ineligible Brian would not play in the Orange Bowl I immediately made sure he got flown into Miami to meet the media I don't denounce the fact that I took asteroid I denounced the fact that I was not allowed the grace period to allow that story to be out of my system on the sidelines at the Orange Bowl Brian unveiled his shirt attacking the NCAA it's a national communists against athletes I knew as soon as I pulled my my jersey off in the shirt was there that made a mistake it's just too far you know sure was a perfect example of going too far the t-shirt incident ended Brian's college career there were some things that you're gonna you don't like to fire a kid you'd like to run a kid off especially a great player that's what you really didn't have a choice he basically asked me to leave this is like hardest thing that's your father saying son it's time to go Oklahoma linebacker Brian Bosworth made of official on Monday he's turning pro Brian's agent hyped the boss's leap to the National Football League he said burger Draft too boring for you we're gonna create the Baz draft I had two months to just market the Baz draft and the Boz and who's lucky enough to get the boss it made all the sense in the world to market this guy I mean it was the biggest name out of college here he is going into the big leagues I would have made that call I would said Brian I'll put you on the front of my cereal box 22 year old Brian was snatched up by the Seattle Seahawks a team with super bowl aspirations for the 87 season the Seattle Seahawks made him the highest-paid rookie of all time Bouchard staged a high-flying grand entrance for the Boz he arrived to Seattle Seahawks camp in a helicopter as a rookie you just don't do that it pisses off every veteran I wish that I could have come in quietly and I wish that they would have weaned me onto the field quietly man he was public enemy number one in those locker rooms they're flamboyant personality it's that I could have to be toned down a little bit when you get around NFL veterans as long as you do your job on the field that's where you earn your respect Brian's girlfriend Catherine Nicastro followed him to Seattle a few months later I know he was struggling it was really hard and if he said something in the media you know it was continuously a problem then in September of 87 Brian's rookie season was interrupted Brian it only played two games when the NFL Players Association went out on strike I wasn't digging on and I'm striking I'm unhappy when I'm not happy I want to play ball with no games for his client to play with Shard took the Boz on a media blitz I got a studio I guess in today cause I think thanks that's close I had him on Good Morning America The Tonight Show and then he hosted a weekend with Julie brown on MTV as he kicking off with a bit YouTube some you to sounds good the strike ended after three weeks many NFL veterans carried a grudge against the Boz for not supporting them and for hogging the spotlight it just kept growing and correctness like that movie The Blob the more people that ate but bigger the blob got Boz was just having fun creating this cartoon character and people made him out of bad boy because he wasn't the norm I wanted everybody to hate a breviary when they would just be yelling we're gonna get you you're no good we're gonna see to it you don't play anymore that kind of things couldn't understand I think with all the hype that was going on it was all larger than life i i quickly misunderstood my place npointing life everybody thought I was like the next coming you know and kids running around with my haircuts I mean it's like a rock star distance I think it was too much too early I think people rushed in on this guy the Boz was everywhere was perfect for Madison Avenue this wasn't perfect for the NFL the Boz was scoring points in the marketing battle but he struggled on the field I was overwhelmed with just trying to get the playbook and then the playbook you know Oklahoma was this it gets you out was this you have no idea who you're supposed to guard where you're supposed to go what holds your home when you look and feel like an idiot Bryan's first season was summed up on the most notorious play of his rookie year a collision with the superstar running back bo Jackson it was the perfect storm he got two funds coming together that became the lasting memory of the guy it's kind of unfair when everybody say mo Jackson ran over boss at the one you're like come on man guys got full momentum at the one-headed brought over balls made the tackle but he made a tackle in the end zone Brian began to adapt to the pros by the middle of the 87 season but in the final game he suffered a debilitating shoulder injury the pain stayed with me for a good period of time it was like a nagging ache and I just knew that something was wrong Brian tried to ignore the pain the way his father had taught him as a youth am I gonna cry because my shoulder hurts come on I'm a football player you smashed your hand against your helmet when you were six years old turn it off I turned it off during the offseason 23 year old Boz introduced himself to Hollywood how do you separate yourselves from those barbaric hordes my thinking was after year two or three we do our first film then you go back to football raise your glasses gentlemen it's a civilization the Brian had only played one season in the NFL the Boz co-authored a best-selling book about his life you made a statement in your book I get a bigger rush out of just knocking the crap out of somebody they're not if anything else in the world I've knocked a quarterback none and I see any Mon and say you all right no good we'll be right back with more from the buys but in real life Brian grew increasingly tired of acting like the boss it's like okay I'm I'm on I have to be on wherever I don't just sucked all the energy right out of it worse Brian shoulders still ached is the 1988 and FL season began going in I knew something was wrong physically with my body he didn't tell us he was hurt I kept fascinate him about he wasn't playing the way I knew it the plot games probably three through eight of that season were the most dysfunctional and unsatisfying games of my career the injuries called over him in a hamper do anyone able to be as effective as it was enough after eight frustrating games Brian submitted to shoulder surgery in 1989 he returned to the NFL for a third year but his sore shoulders prevented a comeback I had it in my heart my body just couldn't give it to it doctors told 24 year-old Brian he'd never play a game I was told to me that your Booker is gone your shoulders a shot I can't fix what you got the Boz is brief and bombastic pro football career was over he was referred to as the 11 million dollar bust but I don't think he was a a bust anything I just think they it was just over critical of boss man he got to the big leagues and fizzled and he'll go down as one of the biggest fizzles you know in sports sometimes I wonder did I make this happen to me because I couldn't handle the pressure was it too much too soon at a too young an age for me to handle it I don't know coming up the Boz searches for a reason to live had I've been smart enough I would have taken my wife's advice sought psychiatric help and later a radical feminist takes aim when shoulder injuries ended his football career in 1989 24-year old Brian Bosworth sank into a dark depression depression suicide yeah the Boz was a failure they wanted the next great white hope to take been a fall by storm and I took that burden on and I failed at it I had to go I'd go away at home someplace I went back to Hawaii Hawaii was where six years earlier Oklahoma coach Barry Switzer had made Brian his team leader Brian left his longtime girlfriend Catherine Nicastro behind and traveled to Hawaii alone I am took nothing but my motorcycle it's not that hard to just sort the other lane it's not that hard to just let it go right off the cliff thank God for Gary he called me he said look I've got a film for you to do Brian's agent Gary was Shard had not given up on making the Boz a movie star my whole thing was where do action stars come from Arnold came out of the bodybuilding world Stallone of course you know is the rocky discovery I have a guy here that could be kind of an American Hero mr. Brian Bosworth requests the pleasure of your company in the spring of 1990 the Boz starred in his first film stone cold in the Land of Oz he is once again a star as he has always been it's really hard for football players to make that transition for me from their athletic field into the movie screen and it's worked out well for me because this script was was written solely for me and you're the star of this movie oh yeah a great experience for me to help the transition from the darkest times into a time where there was a hope but stone cold did poorly worse doctors told Brian that his crippled shoulders would never recover all the power I had is like Samson's hair take my shoulders away I can't do it I've become accustomed to being this very powerful man then all of a sudden wait a minute you don't hit me I made a glass once again Brian descended into a deep depression I need another boost I need a guide to come back in my life and help me with another answer to her prayer not my birthday yet um he gave me chase when Catherine gave birth to their first child daughter chase Brian's gloom was lifted it told me that it was time to let the bonds ago I don't think I'm trying to UM become an actor was a reason to go on I don't think I was enough reason to go on and she was the Boz had his time he came he saw he conquered he failed he left in 1993 15 years after they met Brian and Catherine married I got pregnant with Chase he asked me actually we waited on and we did it on her second birthday no yes you're sitting there like the first first row today Brian and Catherine are happily raising three children in Malibu California that's where you loosen your color I don't want to call relationship with my family on a hot relationship with my kids ten-year-old chase who once gave her dad a reason to live is going to a concert so I'm the Britney Spears man's Britney Spears Brian balances family life with his continuing work in film Ryan started working independently on smaller films and some of the things that he has done as an actor are a really quite wonderful Brian has starred in eight movies in one TV series but has yet to become another Schwarzenegger we've been very successful in terms of the number of film it's more like a struggling actors you know environment for me in 2001 36 year old Brian was an announcer for the flamboyant XFL football league Boz you played in a lot of big games how did you prepare well I would take a few extra Tylenol a few extra advil take my tape on a little bit tighter because I know I was going to war then the fateful trip to the bathroom once I got in there I threw up if I threw up I knew I was ready to play the big game Brian's outsized personality the Boz now makes only occasional appearances yeah he's definitely around and I've seen him I've seen him around sometimes I like it for him to be around we live in such a mundane kind of everyday life that I think it's helpful for him to kind of get a little of that back Brian Bosworth now lives with two artificial shoulder joints and although his body will never completely heal his spirits have somebody asked me before about Fame and I said Fame sucks I don't think God intended us to be famous I think he wanted us to all walk equally in life and if I could just get to that point where I can walk equally with everybody else I think my life would be so much better for it you would a man for a long time and a lot of people's eyes used to laud a man just enjoy what you did and we'll have a lot more good times come
