here he won the uh last stage of the seti mana internationale copia bartoli and just a week or so later was a winner and a brilliant one-two at the tour of the basque country in the julia more energy needed for the tour de france winner part of this quartet with honoree all right we're second in belgium the other day he was on the podium in san sebastian fifth at the tour de paulo yeah turning him into a really good all-round ride of the 24 year old ef education nippo riding at the start of the day we're now seeing as well a trek segafredo rider riding at the front so we haven't seen it but they must have been pulled back that pair that we were talking about yeah they must have been in simon clark and and jasper and there's confirmation graphically actually we just got the confirmation that was group number three on the road yeah they uh definitely have been pulled back otherwise you wouldn't see them committing to to the chase here look at all the damage that was done though magnus because look at the size of the group there compared to the size of the group we had going into that gravel sector and that climb yeah i mean that was that was definitely a a key point into in today's race and not just for for the fact that we go and you know got the attack that we got but um in terms of how many riders we lost out of the peloton as well just losing the wheel being forced to close it seen a little bit of that today haven't we looks behind the car it's not looking super comfortable in there again i suppose we shouldn't expect him to given the fact that he you know it's the first pay back first day back at term isn't it after the holiday yeah yeah exactly exactly interesting that we're seeing in the front of the peloton as well quebec our next riding so it must be in the near solar still in that group there and um if they can they will try and work to to bring it all back to uh to set up a sprint for him it's not exactly what the kerning quickstep want but it wouldn't be the worst option for them either given that ballerini is still there so they'll be happy with how it's gone tactically perfect to now you know what's going to do is you imagine are working to try and help out ethan hater he's at the back of that little group of ineos grenadiers riders i would have said so yeah um you know definitely man informed so a chat between ella philippe world champion and his teammate nikhil honore 146 they're bringing this gap down a lot quicker now in the last five kilometers or so we've seen 45 seconds evaporate but interestingly they're not losing any time to the peloton really have a minute and 15 seconds on the rest of the peliton that's pushed wide by allah goes back to his beginnings in cycle across that and still up the road still surviving from the original four-man break away we have two riders there was monterey stretching out here was ala philippe growing wide stayed cool though didn't he just just turning back saying sorry boys i got that bit wrong happens to the best of us yep a little bit of energy again there's that little unpredictable thing about where is anna philippe's form how are his energy levels how are the legs after his little break yes he's raced twice since the tour de france only one race since the throws that race in tokyo for for gacha honorary looking good because no foil as well and these are the two survivors what a ride from these guys alessandro de marquis at the front quentin herrmann's just on his way yeah you can only say chapel to these guys how whatever the outcome is at the end of the day they've done a spectacular day out well magnus and i have had a chance to consider many things around the sport today we talked a little bit about the distance of the big one-day races earlier on and this one of course not having to have that distance really through tradition or anything but it does have that 250k difference and whether you're a fan of it or not that's fine we could discuss that but the effect that it has on the riders and on who can win is undeniable today the guys at the front have survived in the break for almost 200 kilometers now the race has been going for 251 k's and with guys coming back from little breaks that's that little unpredictable ingredient into this finale and the last 49 kilometers if you're joining us late you've been away watching the welter or any of the other races on this difference this group was formed on the only gravel sector of the race ala philippe and the current quick step working in equal measure really to establish the gap because of wand also bulgarcha came across pogaccha is feeling every little drag here and just losing that wheel or two wheels to to the rider in front of him and having to close that down as we go oh no oh no oh dear oh for once i'm speechless well i did so we're racing through farm roads today the natives have got involved they can't yeah yeah you don't see that very often do you oh we'll move on quickly from that except that's the only incident of its type and well it looked as though that was after the pelican had passed through gone that's it that's it that's it wow he is human he is human after all today pugatjar is dropped interesting they're straight on the radio as well saying i've had to let go they get on the front boys time for uae to go we said they had different opportunities today bulgarcha letting his team know that they can activate plan b will that be diego lisi will that be juana yuso we're about to find out because pogacad has gone pop [Laughter] nice reaction though it's brought straight back down to earth yeah definitely it was interesting because allah philippe could almost uh well he could he could see it straight away that he wasn't there and just went around him and uh with that little bit of an increase in in the pace um managed to drop pogo so yeah a little bit too long maybe on the on the first day back into uh into racing again the marquis just bringing a little dig there edmond straight on his wheel philippe cousins if you're the current quick step here you carry on using both of your riders to ride through and keep everything going like that or do you maybe think about sacrificing one no i think you have to because otherwise you're going to get costner for us sitting on the wheel as well and end up with only one rider continuing contributing to to well working on the front and um if they got aspirations of of holding this clear to the finish they they all all need to work together because it's just gone from being you know a four-man group again and you know on on paper a really really strong four um as it turned out pogba chad didn't quite have the legs today but if they if they just leave one rider to carry on with this they're gonna get caught by the peloton and you know the the peloton is still present and they haven't completely set up and let go of this so it's uh it's turning it's going to turn out to be an interesting final 46 kilometers well this trio's gap to the peloton isn't changing 120 is an athlete shouts forks stretches but then again we see that from him when he's good that isn't necessarily an indicator that he's that he's bad or anything like that he's not having a good day with him you can never judge you don't know until he hits the wall if he's on a bad day what's going to be interesting now is um if pogbacher has time to just recover a bit and uh whether he's going to start riding with um with the rest of the peloton here and then contribute to the chase it would be nice to see wouldn't it to the front it would be is there anything left in the legs he's certainly trying to get something in the legs he's taking on gels and bars and things like that pedaling away pedaling up the badness if you like this was the moment he went though snap there goes the elastic again i think again i think more of a distance job than you know intensity and speed job the fact that he just went from looking okay he was looking a little bit off the whole time in that group but the fact that he went so quickly it's just distance today pogaccha goes back to the peloton and slides into the line and quentin herrmonds is being dropped two or three minutes ago we saw one little dick from denmark he didn't with it herman's was very equal to this time the elastics also snapped here oh it's changing everywhere yeah at this rate there's gonna be a be riders spread out all over the uh breton countryside having a loose ride it's like we saw the loose cows on the road there a moment ago yeah this is on the uh chiaravelen 900 meters long and alessandro de marquis on a brilliant day we know he can do this from breakaways in big races the grand tours normally it's not normally a rider you'd associate with one day classics but alessandro de marquis has the bit between his teeth today and it is so nice to see him racing well again after that horrible accident at the giro d'italia he's racing well to stay out front he's still got a minute and one second on the chasing trio two minutes and ten on the peloton who are getting closer to everybody and you suggested this the last look we had of tadebolgachar he slipped into the back of the line of the seven or eight riders who were working together so it suggested he was going to at least give a try to help his team chase down these guys at the front now even though he's very very low on the energy reserves yeah but i i think he he has to do that and and if whatever he's got left in the tank just just spend it because there's no point in having a little bit in reserve and and drifting out the back of the pelton or sitting in the back of the bunch and and just going for another 10 kilometers you're better off doing a couple of really big hard turns and and you know five kilometers late to be dropped and then sitting there for ten kilometers and not doing anything it's gonna within a minute now the first time the gap alessandro de marquis leads the britannia classic he's dropped clinton herremons and just under a minute behind you'll find julian athlete the world champion mikhail honore the danish rider who was second to his teammate even the pool in overdesert in belgium the other day and christopher one of the big french riders of the moment riding for a really strong ashes of south citroen team today and here costner fry is looking really strong he could body language language is still telling me that he's got a lot of power left but as we've seen stranger things can happen and they happen very quickly after after this amount of kilometers there's no foie from up north in the shell 10 victories in his career a lot of his victories coming on the french cup circuit every single one of his professional wins in fact coming in france itself let's not forget it was an under-23 world champion however as clinton hair moms is going to be caught quite quickly now they're a fancy at a rate of knots this trio two from the same team i know that there are different jerseys there but the world champion a la philippe riding for the current quick step and the belgian super team as they invariably are involved at the pointy end win number 53 yesterday and a brilliantly revamped parry brussels the brussels cycling classic twice up the moon in august it sounds weird doesn't it but it means a brilliant result a brilliant result in bremko have nepal taking the victory now andre amador moves to the front it's all over there in the european champions jersey as well sitting nicely near the front so it's a good opportunity looks as though david decker is still there for jumbo visma jasper stervin who's been out on the attack gonzalo this is the sole leader though alessandro de marquis whatever happens today i think it's safe to say he's on a good day yeah he's on a good day and then you know when you see a rider coming back from injury as well it's always nice to see them perform the way um the way that he's doing here because you know it means that he's he's healed up properly he's had time to train properly and um you know he's is only good towards a good good sort of end of the season really let's put it that way i wouldn't be surprised if we see him featured quite heavily in a lot of the races coming up he's that sort of rider isn't he doesn't have the sort of weight down the grounding of the feet the fact that he has to stay in charge for general classification when he's at stage races and stage racing give the fact he's a climber a bit of a breakaway artist on those days gets to show off the sponsors we've seen him going for king of the mountains prizes things like that one day races he could really do some damage 42 seconds is his gap on the trio two minutes seven seconds in the peloton and that last look we got of the peloton there's a little different look of the chase wasn't there it wasn't quite as frantic and i think we're seeing that reflected now in the the the time gap too yeah sorry it's 125 from the peloton back to alaphilipps group where it was just a minute not long ago yeah true but i also think we've got to take into account we still have 40 kilometers of racing and um you know 40 kilometers on these roads is a long old way so maybe they don't need to chase that frantically in the peloton but just settle down and keep that constant pressure on um and it may very well be that you know these guys start running out of legs as well because it's it's not been an easy day for anyone um so yeah i don't think um the race is far from over let's put it that way yeah a reminder that it was 65 kilometers to go when julian alaphilippe and michelanore launched that attack followed by kuznetfoi and pogacha they've picked up hermons who's been dropped by demarcy at the front of the race and they're slowly getting up to the italian now 39 seconds behind one minute 50 being shown there i'm not sure who it's 37 seconds to the next group 208 to this group the chase seems to have picked up again a bit more organization in there now i think it looks as though there's a few more riders got into the group as well which will have helped organize things trex segafredo heavily involved quebec associate you've mentioned with giacomo monizolo as well it's one i used to by the way a young spaniard 18 years of age we see a couple of riders just misjudging that from marvy starr going off the road though was rubio the colombian climate lives in italy inside 40 k's to go half a minute now the gap over two minutes back to the group on your screen oh you know when that gap's getting lower than 30 seconds race director's car gets pulled out that blue shimano car won't be far off now no definitely not it's never a nice feeling when you sat in the solo break like that and um those cars start coming past you that was my next question actually what what goes through your head when that happens is it completely that's over give up or is it just a more of a reality check uh it's just a bit of a reality check that you know there's there's a group coming and um you just hope at that point that you're going to have enough in your legs to to follow that group for for some some distance to see whether you can salvage something out of the day and the oscar ideas still involved in the chase with trex alfredo and quebec still a minute and a half from these guys back to the peloton which um you know i keep on saying that it's it's it's a big gap to these guys but but at the same time with 38 kilometers to go i think we haven't seen the uh we haven't seen the end of the race you know it's the bunch if they're smart about this and the way they ride it they can they can definitely get something out of it still we had to play we'll go across the final circuit it's the last 20 kilometers or so we're in and around our finnish town of flori race or the town which used to give the race its name average speed so far rob 41.6 kilometers an hour i've been hanging around haven't they no definitely not that's that's faster than the fastest average that the organizers were expecting it's just the look of the race since the start we joined it earlier than we ever have done today with well over what 230 k's to go something like that just after the start and the breakaway have been established and there was also a there was already sorry a sort of means business approach there was a riot this is serious and they took it up very very early on yeah it has been hard racing the whole day and and you know the fact that we still got quinta hannemanns and alessandro de marquis up in in what is effectively the point the end of the race um you know it's difficult to to describe how how big a bigger day that they're having out there in in in this race and how strong they've been riding but i think it also shows you know the fact that they had to really create the time gap and the fact that the peloton didn't really give them any anything for free it's it's just been a very very tough day on on the bike and i think most of the riders will feel this tomorrow when they walk down the stairs for breakfast maybe even having to walk backwards down the stairs because that's usually easier well there'll won't see anybody yet still has that half a minute advantage the peloton in the meantime are just starting to claw the odd second back again sent them a while to get him sort of involved and active and we've just seen another team added into the chase brent buckwalter's moved up for bike exchange and i can only presume they're riding for dion smith the kiwi yeah i would have thought so um but it's it's yeah taking them some time to get there in the meantime there's a little bit more on show there than perhaps that particular rider from israel star that nation wanted yeah they're not designed that way those shorts that's alexi renal who's one of the local riders from brittany de marquis just inquiring us to his advantage again quick pose for the photo 35 k's to go and alessandro de marquis is still out there half a minute of an advantage over the four chasers one of those four chasers was in a breakaway with him not so long ago in quintan herremons just sitting on as julian ala philippe alongside his teammate mikhail honore and benoit kuzner are not far back if you're just tuning in they had the tour de france winner today with them he wasn't able to hack or stand the pace he's back in the peloton after being dropped as well pelaton at 151 from the front of the race isn't too keen to commit because nefora enticing him into it yeah definitely but i also think costner rather um just looking to get some get another bottle or something like that he definitely is signaled that he wanted a a car to come up alongside him so maybe that was why that he he wanted to come back to last wheel so he could get that that drink he managed to do that by the way there's still 15 or 14 kilometers till the bar closes we're not too far now from our final circuit around town which back in the day has held the world championships finish on the world championship haven't you haven't you did this champion at dumont famous finish line back in 2000 that was 21 years ago and it's the current world champion the frenchman julian alaphilippe looks after his litter until the next time he can get rid of it other welcome changes in cycling continues to do his best tomorrow claire impression pulling his faces stretching out it's all part of the show from cycling's greatest show man yeah you're never sure whether he's you know on a good day or a bad day because he always moves around a lot on the bike and almost looks uncomfortable half of the time but then it's just still got all of that power i mentioned we weren't far away from the entry into the circuit as alaphilippe yet again gives us a demonstration of his psycho cross skills the circuit is the final 17 and a half kilometers here we go again cool as you like he's impressive with his awareness and his spike handling ability and just just never looks like anything he's catching him out by surprise he almost makes it look like he planned for that to happen nothing phases him that looks like that's it though forehead definitely no surprise really no definitely not you know it's it's been a long all day and a breakaway but he's done a great job for his team now don't count out this group yet some fast finish is still here and even decent attackers for those last couple of climbs so right at the start of the loop we've got the famous luzo climb sean kelly lojo young or even frank vonnenbrooker one in the past 19 when they go on that windmill turn so we now see demarchy shaking out his legs looking behind maybe almost wishing that there's company there now i think well the company is coming there i think he's seen that so he's uh backed off here now just to uh try and recover a little bit shake out the legs it's an interesting move it is an interesting movie it to to me kind of tells me says that he's still got some some power in there that he's he's not expecting to um to get dropped when they catch him so he is yeah doing this because he feels that okay this is a smarter move for for the final yeah it does make you sit up and think hang on a minute he thinks he can win this well it's not been an easy chase for the for the riders behind though as it is it's not like they closed that down quickly and so it is clearly riding very very strong so far and he's held that that 30 second gap for for quite some time and it wasn't until he really decided to ease off and start maybe trying to recover a bit um to that that this really close down the final 28 seconds interested to see what he does here how he reacts as well does he sit on for a little while given the fact he's just the one that's been caught interesting to see how it all pans out now as the marquis gets going again fights for the wheel of julio alla philippe so he has been caught it's taken a long long time well over 210 kilometers before the breakaway has been caught in today's race we've been racing for almost 220 these dusty roads again we've had the odd slip and slide out chase behind in the peloton has intensified the gap at one minute and 25 when we had a look at it a moment ago 32 kilometers remain it's now ala philippe honore kuznets the sole survivor of the morning four man break and he's looked good very good and now that we know that there are two riders from the koenig quickstep in here the closer we get to the finish the reactions of both cousins are going to be very interesting aren't they yeah i definitely think so but you know i i feel it's still too far to uh to go to the finish to to really make uh make the race-winning move here they've got another issue in the fact that the peloton are gaining on them as a philippe really is putting in a bit of a dig now honorary is the man who's behind just getting a drink ala philippe is out on the pedals pushing on but the other problem i was about to explain is that the breakaway now only has a minute and five seconds on the peloton with 31 k's to go and i feel like putting in a little dig there while his teammate was taking a feed just knocked it off as head amongst his court brentwood walter continues to ride cool fidgets are now getting involved as well that's not a team we've seen riding so far today hopefully you have seen here simone consondi would be a really interesting man to look at and he has form from the olympic games remember from that team pursuit yeah and uh i think there was a one two for him and viviani the other day as well so he's clearly clearly riding very very well we can see uh guests get a little further far behind becca next hash we know today are riding for their european champion and a lot of them will feel as long as they they are able to keep it together over the climbs that are still to come let's not forget it's not as if it's a flat finish now and they can all get organized and work together as if it were a tour de france stage they've got one minute 13 to pull back but this is not just your sponsorship breakaway at the front we've got a tremendous group that's attacked this race and a really hard finale it's going to be a fascinating finish to the day 30 kilometers to go as we're not too far now for employee and the entry to our circuit [Applause] wanting a drink on the left hand side tinder cleric is still there looking after ballerini that's plan b for now for the current quick step david deckard we already know is still being spotted there although there's just one rider towards the front now for jumbo fisma and with the climb still to come you'd imagine that fdg had their own ideas about where they'd like to attack the race there's all sorts of different ways that this could pan out yeah there definitely is um and and that gap is is definitely possible to bridge if uh if you're still fresh enough and you have to have the legs to do so um but yeah it's gonna be a fascinating finale of this one and you know we've still got 30 kilometers of racing and we've been hovering around that sort of minute to minute and a half gap between the breakaway here and uh and the peloton for for some time so you do feel though that that like the further we go with this with this group here um and the peloton not closing them down because it's not for the lack of trying that they just haven't been able to shut the gap completely um the more it's starting to play into the advantage of this break um i would have i would have thought if they if if the pelton had the legs to uh to close the gap down then they would have done so by now to just reset the situation it's too dangerous the riders out front to uh to let them just sort of sit there and enjoy the breakaway sort of thing the further we go in though more and more teams are also starting to get involved in the chase because cf education nippo have just started to commit yet again although very early on today we must give them the credit that they were really ambitious really set their stall out rather like totally seem to have disappeared in uh the recent moment oh wes de marquis there he is i was wondering where he was then but uh ef education nipple are still riding and they've started to commit again lots of different interests as the mikey just sits on at the back for now it looks as though for the minute we're in a black spot for coverage back out of the course as we briefly saw the finish line on the world championship road he's been riding strongly so i've been trying to put the pressure on it was his move alongside his teammate honorary on that gravel section with 65 kilometers still to ride it really did split things up that after the current quick step did take control of it in a team time trial it reminded me of um a couple of the flemish classic races this year where they did that team time trial into the foot of a couple of the races we saw yeah yeah they tend to do that quite often actually just really put the pace on um make it strong out and then attack from there i can remember one where the start of this year it was a team time trial on the front to the foot of the time beg i think it was it may have been in in the ed represent the double check on that but it was hugely impressive when they did it something similar happened today under this gravel sector that's more and more teams yeah i just was about to say despite the addition of another team include palmer fda's you are now riding the gap is still above a minute they're really working hard in the peloton here you can see that it's not a single rider that's an as enjoying this pace being setting up under the orders of uh fred gedo and mark maggio today full french team with two breton superstars and david local pronunciation of the name always say the s in french father was a professional cyclist 1990s here's a man who's been a professional cyclist for a while brent buckwalter mr dependable really in the peliton very good worker solid time trialist and there's uh luke rowe little write about something with you it looked like it certainly wasn't making friends there we'll be able to see what the issue with them with whom hanging on you just get starting to get the feeling there no wonder whether that wasn't it [Applause] brittany with its own language and own culture hmm hello hello yeah interesting that they're putting him to work on the front there former colombian national champion suggests maybe that it's a michael falgren day if he's already working on the front yeah i think that would have had to be it really um just going through the names that they got there that it would be the the best bet really but that means that they're going to want a reduced punch sprint i think swift is on his wheel brent put walter just behind as well and that's what it is you still imagine are looking at ethan hater if we go left right we twist we turn the gap is still at a minute it's not changing much at all despite all the effort behind no it's not it's not it kind of hovers between that minute to minute and a half the whole time and so we're now on the circuit here 25 kilometers to go mikey hanging on sitting on just three riders against the peloton right now and they're all strung out in one long line said put to work by ef education nippo julian belnar is the man they're running for trick cigar fredo looks as though we've got four who are fully committed in that person interesting that coffee does have backed off there's been a lot of that a lot of change there's maybe a little bit of commitment and then they think well we'll hang on a bit maybe we're giving too much and there's not full commitment from everybody no that's not uh and the fact that it keeps on changing all the time but i i think it's because the pace is so hard and riding on the front is it's really um really difficult so unless you've got super lace at this point actually riding on the front is it's it's not an easy job so you've got riders coming up and they're taking them one or two or maybe three turns and then they feel that okay unless i take a bit of a rest here now and try and recover somewhat i'm not going to be able to continue working so we might drift into the peloton and come back in in in five kilometers time to do another couple of turns and then do the same thing again but that doesn't really make the the chase all that consistent uh and that's that's what they need to to bring these guys back in the fact we're still hovering around that minute even though we got the commitment from the number of riders that we got um you know it's yeah it's just showing how strong these guys still are and this quartet still goes for the very first time in the race the gap is now below a minute just by a couple of seconds so they continue to eat away into it but not at a huge race as we're on the mar to climb six point three percent remember one of 64 climbs marked up by the organizers today 64 climbs over 250 kilometers that's a frightening number times of 400 meters or more longest having been that 2.2 kilometer climb halfway through the race lochono the italian he took it on in the breakaway and he's still there at the front he's the sole survivor as these three came across was with them but he couldn't stand the pace he was dropped being made to look human as we see kushner attack kushner attacking with 23 kilometers to go who's going to react how are they going to react anna philippe is trying and that is that i think for the marquis the marquis dream is over he's gone he shelled and kuznetfoi's attack has done for the italian but what's it going to do for the two riders from the kernick quickstep an affiliate for the moment looks equal to it yeah he kind of he hesitated though kind of looked down array where are you going to go or am i going to go um and i think honorary kind of just lightly shook his head and went no i i haven't got this to to cover that one looks like he might might very well be able to ride his way back on again but costner fry is looking super strong today but again if you're cousin of hwa you can say yes 23ks to go but you don't want to be up in the finale against two riders from the same team do you so even if he's going to make it a battle between him and ala philippe he needs to get rid of the other guy or one of them yeah definitely but looking at the time gap though he's it's really come down over the last couple of kilometers here now and warren belgium attacks warren but i'll give a given ago i think that's madwes on his wheel israel startup nation starting to get involved behind as well now that they know that the market has been dropped this is fast this is furious no wonder the time gap is coming down no it's not but looking at one bag as he as he attacked it there was no unable to follow and it was just riders once and two's sort of in in a single file behind so although that attack is impressive he's gonna have to try and get some form of a group together to be able to carry on and keep on chasing these guys down so it initially may look like they're bringing back um a bit of time but unless he's got riders to to to work with then how are they going to be able to to close that gap to um entire think he was bringing paris with him as well he's in the red jersey there is orangiel and from brittany gap behind the other rider coming across from being bear hotels we can only speculate might be bon amore given his form this year yeah there's demarcus caught barghill informed recently winning the musa after a really poor tour de france you'd have to say by his standards by the way was the rider from palmer if they shoot chase singers oh we're falling out now not friends here no he won he was on the road you can understand the logic to what anna philippe's trying to do but i guess you can also understand why kuznet the heat of the moment is bothered by it well of course it's going to be bothered by just putting a serious attack and then when allah philippe doesn't come through he doesn't want to continue riding with allah philippe in his wheel and alafia wants uh honorary with him uh for for for that a little bit longer um but it it's also creating that frustration for costner uh which may mean that he starts to think in in slightly different ways and is he gonna sort of go for another attack and continue to do these moves that then ultimately ends up him spending an awful lot of extra energy that that might just be the difference between winning or losing later bon amor mados bargail it's the dream trio for the bretons they're friends again because philippe honore all together the marquis dropped just down the road before 20 kilometers to go three k's until the end of the full circuit we've seen that madwes have a go bar gill as well and now the current quickstep are going to chase everything with a ballerini who's looking brilliant oh the acceleration that he had there to just close that gap down stove is having a good day as well ben hedemont has been up there for israel startup nation he's been in really good one day racing form actually in the last few months some good results down in italy israel startup nation with two riders up there the other rider they have by the way again still able to give something for her monsieur de sister the day he's having you have water day meantime at the front 35 seconds for ala philippe honore at the back and kuznetfoi in the center this will give the marquis some confidence for for the upcoming races as well the fact that he's able to do this for that deep into the race after after a breakaway um yeah that's it's impressive the italian semi-classics the girly lombardi as well the monument lovely part of the italian season isn't it that the hilly classics in italy at the end of the year 40 seconds talk of war between this main group and the breakaway at the minute sort of attacks from this group though this looks like it's head monsters who's gone out babies this time we had quinton had him on it's not related quinton hermann's up in the break earlier today and yet again the current quick step right on the back of it so good at this not just getting the riders up the road but playing the team game and marking just making sure that these riders know they're not going anywhere behind no not without taking them with them and then the way the ballerina is doing that now as well is those those little snap efforts uh that just gets him onto the wheel very very quickly um for a rider like him it doesn't take an awful lot of energy to to do those little accelerations but it's making it very hard for the riders behind because they're having to sort of drag their way back on to to the wheel again and it's it's costing energy and and for the riders in front of him they look back and see him there and they automatically just stop stop riding straight away so it's allowing that gap to slowly but surely build back up again we know that starving gets better with the distance we saw that at milano san remo he's having a good day as well hovering about on the right-hand side gap's been allowed to grow with all of that stopping and starting behind to 45 seconds now and if they carry that on that will play into the hands of the trio yeah it definitely definitely will especially if they continue to work the way they are and i think honorary is now in in a position where he knows he's gonna have to sacrifice himself for our la philippe next attack to come it's come from the austrian champion conrad right on his wheel there is zimon geske the german just nice to see him back on the road and having freedom after that nightmare story of the covert positive in tokyo the isolation yeah that was following him on social media it was a horrible horrible 10 days for him but again another attack another bit of marking once more it's chased down well he's doing a sterling job here norwegian really talented young rider next attack's going to come to mikey coming to the front just starting to work and try his best to bring these back performances who's up there um really exciting young rider from the caribbean from puerto rico he's the national champion only 20 years of age and up there in a one-day classic for movie star yeah and of of this distance as well i think that's that's the most impressive uh thing you know we're with very good 235 kilometers into into the race and and it's been a very very hard race you know it's it's not just been the the course itself but the fact that we would you know it's been written in a hard way today so we are under the circuit now there we go andre serkui [Applause] we'll head towards the line and then we'll take on that climb that was made famous where we saw several attacks to go and take the win at lizzle 19 term when they go through the windmill sean kelly lojo frank von and brooke have paul launched attacks at that point and these races here the circuit has never always been the same there are changes it's the final climb that's the one that's been there the longest though comes in the final few kilometers final three k's it's the boss du pont you since 1956 in this race [Music] all the time we're seeing the de kerning quick step riders near the front just marshalling everything just not letting anything go anywhere and straight away as soon as there's a move they got a rider in the wheel i look like bree maxine boy just taking it up at the front [Applause] okay samsung are very active you'd expect them to be at home under 16 k's to go a couple of bahrain jerseys towards the front haven't seen those so far today and this is what will be the point with two kilometers to go so that was the first ascension really of the paul nerf climb that was by the way the downhill for the world championships in 2000 yeah it was there's that little section up at nine percent top of that climb exactly two kilometers from the finish line as we saw that's the only preview we get the rest all the climbs on the final lap just to be taken on once starting with luzo and it is up and down they've got the carlucas and then the keos cooler downhill after that the long hill longshield on me and then on nerf again which you've just seen 58 seconds now with all of that stop start stuff ala philippe have a golden opportunity here this will be the flam rouge a lot of the race after that climb is downhill yeah it is um it's it's a it's a strange old finish this one because he comes slightly downhill from the kilometer to go mark and then it starts rising back up again with about 200 to 250 meters to the line and and it's yeah it's not an easy sprint to uh to get right and they're going to get a look at it there we go there's that look at it and this is what you're talking about magnus it rises up again a wider road a very different road to what we've seen crowd is back this year it's michelano is acting the motor [Applause] on the back 58 seconds as they're going to come up and take the bell this is how it looks as ella philippe takes over the bell rings one lap around the town of kuwait it's the protagonia classic 2021 the 85th edition of this race and after an attack with 65 kilometers to go on a brand new gravel sector junior alleged were out there with an opportunity of taking the win they had had april gotcha with them but he was dropped couldn't hack the pace behind those who are left in the peloton have their teammates riding for them they're gonna have to really ride hard they've been attacking each other it's been stop start stuff they got it down to 30 seconds it's back up at 56 here it's a big ass but the terrain is there if they can work together yeah if they can work together i mean so far every time we see someone move it's been shut down by uh by the kearney quickstep and yeah it's going to require quite a big effort to close this down because it's not like we're talking a a sprinter day where we've got one team getting on the front and really working to bring the breakaway back in that one minute per ten kilometers you know that sort of general rule of thumb that we have is uh is not gonna be the case today so so far these guys have held off and you know if we were talking a couple of years back and talking about an attack from four riders would would with 65 kilometers to go um none of us really would have believed that that would be possible to even reach the finish line but the fact that they've been sitting here that minute minute and a half the whole time um yeah it's it's it's the new way of racing right eyes on the prize here because this climb to lizzle is the one i talked about at the start kelly final vonnegut and that 19 ramp right next to the windmill gap's come down by 10 seconds since they got down over the finish line market samsung has the local breton team or one of them doing the work to try and pull this back i think we're going to see a um potential move from costner on on on this climb up here now the steeper sections if he's got the legs left and i think you'd do well to try and get get rid of at least one of the uh the kerning quick step riders these are those horrible steep parts now there's noise sits on the wheel another wheel behind his honor who's struggling this is that loose or climb i mentioned aleph leaps gonna go looks around there's no four still sitting in there looking at silly percentages here for a good few hundred meters it averages up at well above 10 percent still an array hangs on just about and they have 48 seconds they have to keep the pressure on they have to keep on on going flat out up that climb and even fall off the leap now i don't think you can worry too much about whether he still got on the level with him or or not he needs to keep that pressure going because they're working hard in the peloton behind now and there's a bit of an organization going on within the peloton to to keep driving so um yeah that was a quick word there as well between other philippe and uh and honorary um if you know have you got the legs to go um that would be a decent tactical car to play wouldn't it yeah definitely definitely would be especially try and try and get on the rear to make him move and um have costner go in the uh you know try and chase him and here goes ballerini again doing that mopping up job behind absolutely brilliantly guester attacks now baladini ride on his wheel you ain't going anywhere sir knowing guess gets going going strong up there you know he's creating a good gap up here so ballerina's got super legs on today as well totally with the rider trying to come across as well you imagine it's on this particular terrain it is yep there as well left hand side and this is what happens when baladini marks every time they go out they look good they gain a few seconds and bang there it is done dusted next attack it's stop it's start it's not a concerted chase no it's not um and and the problem is that every time someone attacks because they think they can go clear and they think they can bridge across here and ballerina does that um it also puts everyone else in the red so they need to recover by the time they get back on so after that first climb the lizzle climb that's two kilometers long they now head on to this sort of grippy road that's for about three kilometers just up and down no huge long climbs nicest attacks gonna come this time there's no ballerini no i didn't have to that it's still still there though still um only a couple of wheels further down he's done a great job in just providing the opportunity for honorary and felipe to stay out there and do their stuff tactically absolutely immaculate so far the kerning quickstep 9.6 kilometers to go he's at it again absolutely brilliant legs the latter having really had to grit his teeth in the last 20 kilometers or so to hang on but his presence again is just adding another tactical card into the mix for the kernick quick set means that it's not all on our philippe to join this israel startup nation attack in the meantime this trio continue to go there's going to be a terrain to make a move it's that last climb now isn't it to calm down yeah definitely i mean right now we've got another little little climb here and then it's largely downhill until we get uh to to that on nerf climb upon if by the way lasts a kilometer and a half you've got the strongest section in the middle it's the one that they just went up before the finish line it tops out with two kilometers to go i guess who's here again right on the wheel david ballerini if they win today he's the man of the match oh i would definitely say so but you know you say the whole team is is their present just marking every move yeah tanya on the wheel with madwes on a swift third wheel and still because of all that stop start stuff the gap's only at 45 seconds such a nutritional race today i'd say they the peloton needs to be within 20 seconds at the foot of the final climb if they're gonna have any chance of of closing this gap down and um well getting across uh by an attack or or riding to it and and creating some form of a bunch sprint swift is going to ride and really good form at the tour de france natural that the kind of quick step rider captain is just going to sit on there that's his job 40 seconds is another doing up of the shoes a shake of the legs from allah philippe usually tells us one thing he's ready to go well it's almost like a switch um in the head as well when you do your shoes off it's it's time to uh to go and win this bike race and you know you kind of change your mentality from working together to to now really thinking about how can i win this and yes growing ideas on the front there now of the peloton starting to do the chase remember ethan hater is the man in their team to look out for today and the gap is just starting to come down again 37 seconds now it's getting more tense small tightness i finished the phrase another seconds gets chopped off 35 now remember one big climb still to go the boss dupont one and a half kilometers at four and a half percent the oldest climb used in this race it's been there since 1956 that's when valentine won and the opposite side downhill when it was the world championships here 21 years ago on that small rural road now that grippy road and approaching the descent into the climb now circuit around ploy another shake of the legs from ala felipe the world champion your tuning guinea attacked 60 kilometers ago these two men have been with him all the way alongside paul gachar who was distanced a while back six k's to the finish line feel the tension rise as the gap reduces 29 seconds now hello it's certainly within range now magnus yeah just about six kilometers to go we still got that one climb um to deal with as well which is where the peloton if you got any fresh riders left in there could make that bridge it's going to be a very tight final this there's no foreign looks behind talks to honor they'll all be nervous now they still have to commit and athlete just sits at the back now as we approach this final climb they twist they turn and here we will turn at the bottom of this road into the base of that climb that they've already taken on once swift showing his skills on the descent here yeah those corners down the bottom there though is that they're really quite difficult and tight seeing riders get it wrong there in the past swift through the technical section aleph elite back up onto the wheel of cousin of choir who again nervously shouts something over once more an affiliate response honor is the danish rider sitting at the back here 27 seconds it's the smallest gap they've had so far as they're approaching the start of the final climb of the race the boston porn nerf it is 1.5 kilometers long and it tops out at two k's to go so in the next kilometer we'll be there at the bottom of the climb yeah i think right at this moment in time now it would require a big turn from from monterey to get into the bottom of the climb and then leave valla philippe to it and try and defend off uh costner what it's getting towards that stage where that decision might have to be made because the gap's gone down as low as 25 seconds now there we go four kilometers to go 500 meters until we get to the bottom of the climb it is honorary now who looks like he's doing that he's riding hard at the front he's sacrificing everything he's emptying the tank and trying to do the best for the koenig quick set and for his world champion julian alla philippe third there in the trio sitting on waiting to make his own move is benwa kuzner who's won every single one of his races so far in his career in france we get to the point where they entered the circuit we get towards the bottom of the final climb of the day the longest oldest climb in this race ponder that's been ridden in this classic since 1956 and we start with the narrow road interesting with a time gap oh we've had a crash on that descent we've had a crash building up there our bodies all over the side of the road guess who's out of the game now i'm afraid that guillermo is down as well oh that's a shocker so close to the end [Applause] in the meantime it's because no foil who looks around ala philippe who's ready poised waiting to go this could well be the moment where a move is made honorary comes around because no foie is there an athlete wants to stay on his wheel he's not coming through no i think i'm chasing at 21 seconds sorry magnus it's connor swift yeah conor swift is doing really really well here now he's uh absolutely flying on this one and i think um ala philip is is trying to stay in the wheels here and and try and force costner for us to do a bit more work and then uh make that attack when uh the roadside is steep to stop here a reminder that connor swift likes racing in brittany the races for a bret on tv one two earlier this year a look behind now from lfe the gaps are 20 seconds now to swift and here he comes he's got the rest of the group those who managed to stay on their bikes with that incident that we didn't get to see they're just a handful of seconds behind it's honorary here at the front in the blue his teammate ala philippe at the back in the rainbow stripes 800 meters of this climb remaining and they're on the toughest point now and customer fire keeps on looking back keep on loading it here goes that philippe he waited till the hardest part and i think he makes his move now does he have to power the distance because oh it doesn't look like it look how christmas reacted wow he's got some legs on today because that was impressive the reaction to alaphilips attack absolutely huge he was motoring there because a man who's won some super prices so far in his career could he do it for the first time at this top level now then behind jorgis is on the wheel almost of swift christopher remind you has never won a world tour race no and i'm going now i think if i was out of philippe i'd be worried about uh bringing cosmo foia to the line but at the moment yeah oh he's one more dig he realized that and went again is there anything left in the attack for cousin foreign is struggling each time he thinks he's done it he has to sit down he's coming up to the top though aleph philippe hanging on hanging on and he is there he can't get rid of him as they go over the top of the climb and this this will be interesting now because if andre is still behind them and has continued with it with his effort he's got a perfect opportunity to just come sailing past a pair of them fascinating absolutely fascinating and arafat looks behind here comes the neutral service that's going to have to get out the way that didn't take the race director's car out the way either that's really going to go now and here comes honoree here comes honore behind keep your eyes on this his customer aware of it surely he's being told now surely he's getting that message he looks around he will build a c honorary and this is fascinating with 1.6 kilometers to go mikhail honore he gonna go straight past them here he is here he is and there he goes lead out for alaphilippe with krishna four on the wheel and i feel like behind 1.3 kilometers to go connor swift was the next rider on the road and then you had the rest of the peloton key thing for honorary now is to to stop the leader far enough out but close enough just for for um volcano fly to have to start the sprint so the timing of when he peels off is going to be absolutely key to our flips win where would you peel off um it's by sensation i'd say 101 180 meters from the line 800 meters remain now there's another stretch another shake of the legs another gesture from junior anna he wants this race he's desperate for it the last time he was here in brittany he exchanged his world championship stripes for a yellow jersey at the tour de france it's one day racing now it's a world tour race it's one of the most famous classics on french soil it's the putanya classic and we're into the final 500 meters honorary his teammate at the front kushner foie looking for a first world tour race behind honore is done they're chasing on behind [Laughter] and behind it's a super finish from ethan hater and ineos grenadiers win the sprint from the bunch is a world tour race winner for the first time in his career the way he reacted to that ana philippe attack you knew he was on the best day of his professional career the way he's come around him and held off in that sprint despite leading it out has been absolutely incredible they compete for minor places behind they've all boston hagen a former winner today's winner is benoit kuznerfort i think that i think honorary on the front here now at at this point he needed to basically sit up and force cosmopolitan hesitate and then give the opportunity to allah philippe to counter the way the fact that they go in for the sprint all three of them um i just played into the favor of costner fire clearly had the better legs today and like you said rob what a phenomenal counter that he did to that attack by ala philippe and then really putting him under pressure and without doubt the way it was won the level on which it stands that is the biggest win of his career to date i think if honorary backed off here now then allah philippe would have had the opportunity to to to jump uh question four and after he briefly gets in front doesn't he but look at the strength here ala philippe can't hold it kuznetfoi back in front and this is the moment he shakes the head the world champ says no and he has to settle for second place benwa kuzner demonstrated a long way out that he was the strongest and he was able to prove it on the finish line as the winner of the britannia classic sensational stuff and lovely to see two warriors going head-to-head only one winner this time the world champion beaten this time it bismuth who takes his first ever world tour victory that's a huge step forward he does it outside of france but he's beaten the best in the world here that is a a massive step forward and uh what a confidence boost as well but it was you could see already early on in the breakaway that he he had some good legs on him and and you know that final climb that that was super impressive oh the way he reacted it's been a long time since i've seen an acceleration like that to somebody reacting to an attack well deserved and we've seen some superb racing on the roads of northwest france today one of the things i love about julia felipe is he recognizes when somebody's been better on the day yeah definitely he's a proper competitor for good and for bad yeah when walkers know what i think you can tell as well why he was getting so frustrated early on he knew that he was on a special day yeah he definitely knew that um but yeah i i still can't get a quiet kid over the the response that he gave on that on that attack from allah philippe and even in the sprint here you can see they still got that strength and power in his legs compared to allah philippe it was just a clear difference and and the strongest man won today uh [Music] [Music] and this is how the shake-up ended with kuznetfoi winning ahead of junior ala philippe honore completing the podium and the kernick quickstep again you can't fault their tactics they played it perfectly today they were just simply up against a stronger manners kuznetsic west france prize for the best spreads on ryder yet again goes to sixth place yeah here's because however okay congratulations what a race um over 60 cases to go when you started the attack how did it go i'm really happy it's my first world tour and i've been waiting for [Music] [Music] julian when i could of course it's a different sprint here of course i knew i could do something i was confident did you feel strong [Music] [Music] [Music] there's no personal problems [Music] he's a good player isn't he's a good actor i'm really happy thank you thanks a nice little bit of recognition there that allah plays the game really really good feeling between them but saying yeah i'm not gonna believe julia if he tells me i'm the strongest yeah maybe not hey you wouldn't with what he's one but well with what benoit things do change and a world tour win 11th win of his career and that under-23 world championship now being validated this was the moment again road going uphill already by this point sprint launched by kuznetfoi behind the approach with burnham leading the pack hater was there eventually won the sprint ahead of uh swift from that group brits fourth and fifth but it was the french who dominated here at the front look at that from kushner he cannot believe it because
