as actors an essential part of telling stories is to deeply understand our characters and to make the audience understand them too the five men in this category do that brilliantly taking us through some challenging and sometimes gut-wrenching human experiences and in doing so they tap into some of our innermost feelings in the most compelling and beautiful ways here are the nominees for male actor in a leading role Austin Butler Elvis told me things are too dangerous to say sing Colin Farrell the Banshees of Ina shearin [Music] that you never used to be oh God maybe it never used to be Brendan Fraser the whale she's gonna be okay else I need to know that I have done one thing right with my life [Applause] Bill Nye living amen well at least keep the application open for one more week what harm can that do [Applause] Handler Hustle you told me to quit I know and I meant to tell you actually did it and I'm kind of freaked out about it well I'm not I know what I'm doing you'll see I'll show you yeah you do that and the actor goes to Brendan Fraser [Music] [Applause] [Music] thank you [Applause] oh um I'm smiling and breathing let's have a job um I'm uh Ian McKellen told me to be good be brief and be seated so here goes um uh this is good um it's sort of a naked man making up his mind to smile or to frown you know like an actor right um I uh would treasure this but never more than what I treasured that I used to keep in my wallet which was my sad card that I earned in 1991. it made me feel like I belonged we're actors we all want to belong to a tribe and that's when I found where I belonged and if you told that guy back then that I'd be standing right here right now I would not have believed you I am wouldn't have believed that I had a chance to work at the world-class filmmaker like Darren Aronofsky and speak the words of an empathy fountain that is Samuel D Hunter and an incredible castmates like Hong Chao and Sadie sink and Ty Simpkins and Samantha Morton and I um never would have believed that I would have been offered the role of my life in this character Charlie in the whale he's someone who is on a raft of regrets but he's in a sea of Hope and and I've I've been at that sea and I've rode that wave lately and it's been powerful and good and I've also had that wave smash me right down to the ocean floor and dragged my face along there and wind up on some strange beach in a different world and wondering where am I now and I just want you to know for for real all the actors out there who have gone through that or are going through that I know how you feel but believe me if you just stay in there and you put one foot in front of the other you'll get to where you need to go have courage without the love of my children dripping and holding and Leland and their super mom acting in my badass agent Joanne Colona and the Clarion call that is my group see me I wouldn't be able to do any of this thank you so very much [Applause] I'm gonna go find this guy some pants now together [Applause] and now Mark Wahlberg
