paper was light gold in medieval times [Music] i want tobacco sugar [Music] that everything we thought we knew about the world might turn out to be completely wrong i'm sarah richardson this is carolyn this is carolyn's living room and dining room and this is what carolyn's living and dining rooms look like now thanks to lots of help from design inc [Music] what do you do when you're a young couple with two kids a dog and a home where shabby has taken over from chic call design inc and sarah hi i'm carolyn nice to meet you i'm james hello there it's a great room it's got nice proportions we just have trouble sort of figuring out where to put the furniture into the room [Music] okay tell me how you guys use this room right now it's a bit of an everything room okay but we don't want it to stay that way this living and dining room is a trove of pre-loved treasures i think it needs some editing what do you like that's in here what would you like to get rid of what works what doesn't work we generally like the color scheme okay um although we're open to some change okay we like the crown molding we like the lighting what about uh existing furniture anything i mean this looks like a really good quality sofa everything is pretty much hand-me-downs okay family or the price tag on those is usually quite good flea market fine so okay both are reasonable so we're not really tied to anything is there tv watching in here really is just a little there's a hidden tv in there a little baby a little tv watching okay we need it for emergencies like um hockey there's a hockey game i've heard that one before what about the dining room when we first moved in i thought we should maybe consider putting the family room in here but um it's worked out quite well this way so you lost that little that little debate table chairs love them i love the chairs okay they're very comfortable yeah i like them the one thing i'm really attached to is the carpet okay how do i put this well you don't find deer and bunnies on every carpet it's really quite fun does this piece give you enough storage it gives us some we actually i we have our china in there so what do you like more you red chairs or your china [Music] it's decision time one thing that will focus the decision making is the bottom line the budget is about as tight as i a project that i would ever tackle it's definitely going to involve some scrimping and saving we did a renovation when we moved in here so we had we don't have a lot of money left to do some of the more cosmetic things so i think it will be a bit of a challenge to get the room done well tommy and natalie love a challenge 49 and three quarters to where it breaks the corner you feel like you can help us and just like that ellie's our newest team member are you busy tomorrow you're gonna hook it there and why not look at the footwear those are beautiful i think you can be a member of our team because everyone really likes shoes but rooms like shoes need to be switched up from time to time so we've struggled with trying to figure out where to put the living room in the first place we have thought about putting it in this space which is the dining room and flipping it and putting the dining room in the living room and we're still not entirely sure what to do about that maybe it's time we see for ourselves we've been living with the switch for over a week now and we love it i've had a chance to entertain in the space too and it seems to work beautifully for that hello hi hello look how good that looks isn't it fun this is the way these rooms were meant to be so much for the switcheroo now let's rate carolyn's flea market fines if their style of entertaining is kid focused really relaxed and there's lots of young kids around if you're having a dinner sometimes a little kid gets tired and just needs to have a little lie down i had really thought that it would be so nice if there was a way that we could create a little lounge up here in the front you could build a banquette in here yep you could build a window bench i like the idea of the banquette and using these two chairs as end chairs for the dining table okay to stay on budget we have to work with these chairs in the dining room no it's actually fine i like them adventures and what about these if the if the red chairs stay they don't stay red which brings up another issue this is one bossy carpet i'll work with it but i would prefer to design a scheme that is the right scheme for the room if the rug stays the chairs stay and the table stays what am i doing here what are you doing here what are you doing here right what am i doing carolyn's living in dining rooms are undergoing a personality bypass we've been living with the switch for over a week now and we love it now we're deciding which fabulous flea market fines stay no it's actually mine i like them adventures and which go this is one bossy carpet a little clarity is setting us in the right direction i've done flea market style lots one of the easiest and best colors for success in flea market style is blue and green you can find great fabrics there's terrific paint colors you can get lots of vintage pieces and it always works now we're talking i really love the energy and i love the color palette of this floral but what about the red chairs it's going to take a bit of diplomacy there's one caveat to this blue and cream scheme in that i don't know that the red chairs work and that the rug works so i need you to think about you know are you willing to paint them uh do they go to a family member i think we'd be open to either option painting them okay or uh donating them and the bunny rug it matches quite nicely with the family room upstairs so we had been discussing if it really didn't work for you guys that time we have a new home already chosen okay this has been a much easier basically sort of a little nervous easier than i thought much easier than editing something like this for example plan in place let's go shopping well that could solve some storage problems and wallpaper could add visual interest we talked about doing just some wallpaper on the chimney breast area so just another hit of color and pattern in the room so something i think it could be something really vibrant and exciting kate's on a roll so to speak and tommy's not far behind sarah has sent me here to try to find plain kelly green cotton twill for carolyn slipcover this is our jumping off point fabric what i have found so far is this stuff which is awesome this is outdoor fabric it means for dogs for kids for wear for tear for slip covers you can't do anything to harm this fabric but sarah doesn't like it so i have to find the perfect kelly green cotton twelve this is kelly green but this is flimsy i'm gonna ask what they think when in doubt ask the experts it doesn't have enough durability okay so no so can you help us find something more durable there's no killer green that's the closest thing to pellegrini this is a nightmare [Music] it appears kelly is nowhere in sight so for tommy the hunt continues meanwhile back at carolyn's it's in with the renewed oh it's perfect end up with the old [Music] narrow stairways are a worthy foe but we haven't been licked yet crazy meanwhile across town i gotta show you something this is it my girls tell me that you can't slip cover with us it's too flimsy no you definitely can't it's still a little strong but that is kelly green yeah that's cali green i wanted a kelly-ish green i really wanted okay i wanted spruce green did they have spruce green i'll tell you what they do have a lot of army green like that's really not our look hot lips richardson and her camouflage slip cover you can't see me i'm hiding on my sofa with a little more searching we've managed to set our sights on a green we can all envy well people on the team at least okay should we start with the dining room dining room okay wallpaper i love the wallpaper excellent excellent i think it's great we had initially talked about just doing like a chimney breast i'm thinking the entire room just go for it yeah it sounds good i think it's such a big room this which i think is really fun then for the slipcover for the two chairs that we're going to use as the end chairs now we thought this was really fun and just simple and now for the sofa it's a lot of fabric and it's going to be the main piece in there so this is the one that sarah really liked piped in this and i do not love the screen okay oh come on doesn't anyone like my vision for green but i bet you'll like this check it out 129 i'm taking two help i'll too carolyn's liking her ideas for her blue green vintage living dining room love it this is sort of a nice love it and love you love to love it but our luck has run out on the sofa slip cover um i do not love the screen another shot at fabrics and natalie believes she's got a winner less green more blue full of confidence her ideas can't wait until morning [Music] what are you doing here well i met carolyn at her office yeah she felt so badly but not badly enough to let us try it exactly okay she doesn't like these types of braids so no so i think these are a little more caroline that's about as subdued as i can go i would love to pipe it in a stripe yeah perfect that issue solved next this is a full-on ambush this is an intervention i came prepared well i think she's gonna look like a cooking apple or something in that tone why don't we just do two colors let's do the ceiling in pale powder yep we've got a plate rail so we do teresa's green above the plate rail and then cooking apple green below i like that at least it's fun and then the ceiling in the dining room i think should be green ground we'll also paint out the dark wood in the new living room to brighten things up natalie supervises the banquette build i'm victor's assistant so i have to make sure that he has everything he needs yeah i'm doing well now it's okay yeah just checking we need to save some money with the chairs we're thinking of using these ones and spraying them white you can see all the chipped paint coming off and with what we're doing in this room with all of the blue if we painted it white and they started chipping and the red was showing through it would just look terrible so i think that is not going to happen so i'm sitting here while everyone else is looking for chairs apparently you're a cute little blue chair and you're very well priced then you're pretty comfy look at that cover comes off for washing now that's child friendly i think this adds a little bit more softness to the dining room i'm just not sure whether carolyn will go with an upholstered chair the other problem is that i think these chairs are perfect but on camera they look terrible and all the strikes are chasing which means that since this is a tv show i probably can't have these chairs either darn tv show i did eventually find the right chairs and seeing as natalie's not too busy i'm sitting here while everyone else is looking for chairs she can help put them together they look great i think they're perfect you gotta love something that you can spray clean and hello all you people who like wood trim i'm gonna tell you you're wrong nothing short of spectacular the way the colors have worked out in here i think terrific the window bench not so much i'm wondering if the bench is going to be too shallow no way you're going to have room right now for a pillow in the bench right now it's a tushy rest yeah oh victor work for me baby so you can't put a cushion on it you can only put a tushy on so what i'm wondering is could we bring it out four inches i know you love doing stuff twice huh [Music] oh look how cute these are for the end of the dining table oh sweet and where does this go oh that's one of my props very pretty yeah i thought you'd like a little plastic plastic figurines are so sarah richardson used yeah yeah i arrived just in time and in just the right colors good morning you got the memo well i thought we might be doing a little painting today so i wore my painter pants uh i'm not painting in these jeans they cost way too much money arriving with coffee for you if you keep being this nice for us there's gonna be nothing to put in the towel [Music] oh that was great look at that slip cover that right there is the reason that sarah no longer sews because frank is a magician [Music] i know you're jealous here's something i'm still pretty good at it's like curling and something i really enjoy i do windows and speaking of something neat and tidy well isn't this gorgeous listen you don't get a wing chair for 12.50 but once it gets its new dress on it's sort of like control top pantyhose it doesn't look very pretty right now but we're gonna pull on that new slipcover get it all fitted in and it is gonna look beautiful the same can't be said about our bench that's not a bench in fact it's a table oh no for another client it looks like our painter got the wrong instructions this was supposed to be a about 20 inch wide by six foot long narrow bench with an asian leg on it and instead they've sprayed a table that used to be black with a really nice rattan inset that i actually liked as it was i'd wanted that table for so long and i found it on clearance um gee for the first time in several seasons i'm a little speechless over that looks lovely i hope they like it to take carolyn's living and dining room from flea market to fabulous we started with a room switch-up very very smart and our color scheme seemed to be solved at least until kelly green stepped into the picture um i do not love the screen okay less green more blue so an on-the-fly scheme meeting was in order i would love to pipe it in the stripe perfect the pieces were coming together this looks excellent it's exceeded my expectations but as shabby chic design isn't complete without a little diy right good some corbels and a piece of plywood give this radiator a stylish topper nice hey that's a great idea that is love this and a family gallery is the perfect touch to complete this project i like dad and the puppy for this end and long and skinny okay perfect it's so easy to reproduce photographs that you have you get them re-copied in black and white put them in a mat in a ready to go frame it looks incredible tommy's giving me a look so did not think this was gonna work and it looks sensational so if i'm right and tommy's wrong why am i getting the coffee don't let your children do this shoes it's a girl in a bubble uh when did i get demoted to like less than interest last time i checked i was actually the boss it's keeping you humble no matter how many exquisitely sophisticated expensive rooms i do one of my all-time favorite styles will always be the look of carolyn's living room and dining room there were pieces there which were great pieces and if there's nothing wrong with the pieces don't toss them out just breathe new life into them what do you think ellie definitely child friendly carolyn had two little chairs which i just think are adorable but with a new slipcover they look amazing and carolyn had a sofa that had really nice lines and it was great quality for about five hundred dollars you can get an entirely new cover made it's going to stand up to the wear and tear of young kids and it makes your sofa look brand new you can have a beautiful welcoming home everything is washable it's cotton it's slip covered the chairs are wipeable we could come back in a year from now and it's going to look just as great this is my favorite room i've done this this season i love the light fixture and the window seat is great i'm sure they'll spend a lot of time there in order to keep our budget in check we really had to focus on the dining chairs what we found was something more contemporary they're wipeable for the kids and i love the contrast of that kind of rustic dining table with the chrome legs and i think it works very well what i love about the kind of flea market approach to decorating is that you can take a collection of sort of jumbled pieces from all different sources and you can unify them and you need great paint colors my highest success rate usually is in shades of blues and greens i didn't want them to be really washed out so i was really looking to get some punch and i really wanted to feel happy so by choosing a kind of a wide tent stripe wallpaper i think it helped to bring the room alive this piece looks great it really stands out and i i love it even more wow look at this guys this is incredible in many ways i actually prefer the effect of a plate rail to allow a two color paint scheme in a room over a chair rail we were able to have just the upper band closest to the ceiling in an accent color and we were able to use the plate rail for super inexpensive art hanging treatment it looks incredible we were able to use really bold patterns in both rooms the nice thing about these two fabrics is they're the same intensity of color but they have a totally different character each room has its own personality but they're connected with one another i love all of it i love everything that's been done i'm completely overwhelmed maddie seems quite happy with it all too if money is no object there is no challenge go buy the best of everything and you'll have a beautiful home if you're on a tight budget it's always a challenge and i think you should embrace the challenge and then you should sit back and admire what you can achieve when you are thrifty and creative [Music] you
