we just got our hands on the super rare YouTube diamond play button these things are kind of hard to come across so for this video we're building a replicator briefcase to make copies that we may send out to one of you what's up guys grant Thompson the king of random I'm Nate the Jack of trade we're really excited for this video because 10 million of you have joined our channel and this just arrived in the mail the coveted YouTube diamond play button it's pretty incredible like I've seen unboxing videos of and stuff of them before I've seen some pictures but they don't really capture it very well probably because it's so shiny it's really hard to take good pictures and video of it you know the thing that impressed me about this the most wasn't actually the diamond play button itself it was the case that it came in pretty case how amazing is this thing I mean that's heavy duty when it showed up and we took it out the box it was like man that is some serious stuff and we do not want to waste a good case so for this video we're thinking how could we do something fun with the diamond play button and the case together and I think we got some pretty good ideas yeah the case is great but we are planning to have the diamond play button out of the case on display and so that wouldn't be getting used and we didn't want it to go to waste so here's the basic idea we've got the briefcase that the diamond play button arrived in we're going to cut out some of the phone support build a small internal frame place the diamond play button inside and then fill it with silicone rubber making a perfect mold by the way guys I don't know if you can tell but Nate is so freaking tall one of the reasons I can't be in the videos with them is because of our height disparity if you take a look right now I'm standing on my tool box just to try and even things out a little bit there's a little behind-the-scenes for you I hope you enjoy that as a first step this case has this big old block of foam that is glued in place and I believe was milled out just to have the right size and shape for the play button and we need to remove some of that and we don't want to get rid of all of it we want to have just enough space to make the mold so what we're gonna try and do is measure a little bit bigger than the size of the play button and cut down through the foam and pull that out to cast this play button I went picked up about 8 pounds of tin cure silicone and I got a catalyst in blue mainly because the blue silicon is my absolute favorite we like keeping things simple and predictable and this word does a really nice job it has a really clean finish so that's why we go with tin pure silicon if we were trying to make 40 or 50 molds out of something we probably would have been interested in the Platinum cure but although we do plan to use this a fair amount I kind of doubt we'll get to that many so at this point we pretty much got all our materials put together so let's dive right in and get [Music] [Music] we've got all of our pieces cut for the box but it's a very square box which means if we make a mold in it it'll basically be impossible to get out if we leave the sides permanently attached so for this first time I think what we're gonna do is just have it held together with tape plus the pressure from the sides of the box we've got our box it's all held together with tape which seems a little ghetto but I think that will actually work out well for us in the end when we have to take the mold out if it were sticking to all those sides and we couldn't take them apart it would be nearly impossible so this way we'll be able to remove the tape and just pull the sides down it should be a lot easier to be mold wonderful one side of this play button has this felt surface and that's what it's designed to be set on as you just have it on display and we don't want the silicone to ruin that so I am gonna try and cover that with tape that is where our play button will sit will of course make sure it's maximum shininess before we pour any silicone over it our box is ready our play button is ready now we need to mix up a whole bunch of silicone total weight of the silicone that I just poured into the bowl with 64 ounces so now I need to add 6.4 ounces of our catalyst now I need to stir this up until it is one homogeneous mixture [Music] well it's pretty well mixed to me I'm placing some foil around just a couple of the edges so that I am able to bring the silicone over onto this maybe sometimes in smaller quantities without just pouring silicone dripping all over the case I hope it helps alright we're going to start by just getting a thin layer over all of it here goes nothing [Music] want to give it a couple of minutes right there to sort of let some of the bubbles rise to the surface and pop more bubbles will be introduced a little bit hopefully a lot of them will leave but we do want like a nice clean shiny surface of course right where it's in contact [Music] we've got a briefcase full of blue silicone and it probably needs to sit for four or five hours but we're just gonna let it go overnight to make sure it's 100% cured you might have noticed we didn't actually degassed this silicone there are quite a few bubbles here and they're all making their way to the service that's gonna give it kind of like a really pocked look it's not gonna be smooth and clean like it would be if we use the vacuum chamber but I'm really ok with that because I've done a lot of moulding with this type of silicone before if you might remember the Lego gummy molds that we made we did some play button molds with the silver play button as well to make chocolate bars the finish on the surface comes through really clean and smooth because the bubbles start to travel up and even if they get stuck inside the rubber it's not a big deal as long as that surface is smooth I can't wait to see how this turns out tomorrow I love the whole feel of this it's like the spy briefcase you carry around you got your little diamond play button replicator does this thing pops out a new dumb play button only the ones we're gonna making are a little bit different than the ones we've got here through the magic of YouTube let's now transport till tomorrow new day new t-shirt new haircut let's dive it in the mold and see we got alright so how do we actually get this out of the box well we've got our little box inside our bigger case so first I think we need to get that little box out and do you think it's heavy enough if we flipped it upside down and shook it it would worth the try now it's worth a try alright I'll shake it you catch it oh it's coming there we go teamwork makes a dream lurking little bits of the tape head started peeling that was what was slowing it down even more that's pretty cool had tiny bit of leakage which is why I'm glad we put the tape on everything very minimal though now the biggest question we had as this was setting little bubbles of air we're constantly coming up through the center so we're kind of thinking the silicone may be seeping down underneath the diamond part of the diamond play button if that's the case we may have silicone for life stuck down there after we cut it out we're hoping that's not the case we're gonna find out can I pull these don't do an appeals that's the power of a girl it easily all right moment of truth whoa wow that came out very nice yeah I thought there would be a lot more leakage underneath it I would have to that was just sitting flat on the bottom it hardly anything leaked it this button is so amazingly heavy it looks like the weight blocked that out we could probably it's just a thin enough membrane here we could just peel that out by hand and that clean that up with an exacto knife all right should we take a look inside Thanks why don't you do the honors Nate it's releasing nicely really easy that's why I wanted to let it go overnight if you only do it for like three or four hours a lot of time it'll just stick a lot more it's got a beautiful shiny texture on the inside you get if you can see down in there look how reflective that is that's as its ever gonna be look we want to keep but it is sticking around of the gem watch the little diamond part pop off oh yeah oh you know what if you pull it gently enough we may be in luck this is a very delicate process because if that's silicone rips we're pretty much you're never gonna get it out for whatever yeah it's like surgery oh can we break it [Music] yeah well there we go if you look in here you could actually see it almost looks like silicone is it just reflecting or is it in all surfaces there under all the cracks really hard to tell alright guys time for a damage report let's see what kind of damage we did to this thing here if you take a close look at the play button you can see we have a bunch of silicone trapped around the edges of the actual diamond jewel here I'm not sure how we're gonna get those out if ever I mean unless we actually popped that out we have a little Nick over here where the ruler hit it and everything else I think could pretty much be cleaned up buffed up and it would be as good as new but the silicone here there's not really much we can do about that also a little bit of silicone stuck to the felt bottom which I did put a piece of tape on there to try and minimize that but it was able to get in to the edges so we've got a little piece of felt here a little bit of silicone going around the border it's a good thing it's not an awkward color like blue or anything like that it will probably just end up pulling that felt right off and replacing it with something else if you look down the mold here you're gonna see all these little flappy edges here that's where it sunk down into the crevices between the jewel now what we're gonna do is cut those off we could recast it with those and it would leave a nice impression or a groove but we don't want that we want to cut that off we're gonna clean it up with an exacto knife or some scissors and get this thing ready for casting oh look there's a little bit of a bubble there a little imperfection we might be able to mix up some silicone and fill that in though this is a diamond play button and I'm kind of curious to see if we can make this whole thing look a bit like a diamond by making an ice casting inside and getting ice to cast clear is kind of tricky there are several different theoretical approaches and I've tried most of them they don't work the only thing I've found that does work is to have all of the ice freeze from the bottom up to the top so we're gonna try doing is filling this with water and then making a styrofoam box that actually goes over the whole thing so that all of the cold goes up through the silicone at the bottom and just slowly freezes it from the bottom to the top and the way that we've molded this the bottom is actually the top of our play button so hopefully we'll at least get quite a bit of clear ice and avoid all of the cloudy eyes most imperfections in ice are formed when there's air inside the ice that can't escape when you freeze ice cubes in a freezer they'll freeze from the outside from the top the sides in the bottom all at once in sort of this just encasing brick and then as it freezes in the air bubbles aren't able to go anywhere and so they stay trapped in the middle if you freeze it very carefully from the bottom up much of the time any bubbles that do form will only be at the top surface level and not stuck all throughout and that's what we're hoping for but I've never tried it with anything this baby before so it is definitely an experiment so what we're gonna do is we're gonna put the mold into the freezer then we're gonna pour cups of water into it and then figure out how to fit this over it's just gonna take a little bit of trial and error because there's not that much space in the freezer but I think we'll be able to get it to work I was trying to dive in to play button to clean up the silicone and I noticed that one side of this diamond had a huge gap and that's where a lot of the air was coming out so I was using an exacto knife to try and clean out from under there and lo and behold I actually popped the diamond down and the whole thing is extractable which you know looking at it kind of blows my mind I thought this was just set down into the metal itself but no it's like this whole contraption with a metal base plate that glues down inside it which I think opens us up to another project idea Nate what do you think we should do with this I think that means we can make a whole separate mold of just the gemstone that diamond triangle in the middle and that way we can make some other fun replicas with actually setting the stone down inside whatever else we're molding and casting I like that plan we tossed around a few ideas and maybe putting some LED strips in there that we could turn on so that the diamond would actually glow we have a glowing center of the diamond or if we cast in like a green or a red resin we could have like an emerald or a ruby type play button we can interchange we could change it up any time that we want it we could also laser etch our logo into the center and put it back together so many things that we could do with this which I'm thinking probably nobody has ever done before so we wanted to show you this because no one else tears apart of their diamond play button I don't think it's ever been done before so we're doing this we're destroying our diamond play button for your education entertainment and then like that well now it wasn't that easy to pull out the first time it was glued in place but apparently not that well if you look closely down the center here you can see that where it was glued to the plate it wasn't a very great glued top and that's like right at the center of the play button so we may take this apart and reglue it make it look a little bit nicer we're gonna fix those manufacturing defects and hopefully make it a little bit better we also got a letter from YouTube signed by Susan Wojcicki at least digitally signed and it's kind of nice I'm gonna set this right here if you want to see what it says go ahead and pause the video and check it out here's a random factoid for you the metal portion of the diamond play button weighs just under ten and a half pounds whereas the diamond portion weighs just under six ounces grant you broke the button ah and that's how it happened alright update we've now had our diamond play button mold with water in the freezer for like two days because it takes a while to freeze when we've got so much insulation a lot of thermal mass to cool down there yeah the silicone was like this it was like an inch thick at the finished spots and then we had two inches of insulation foam all the way around it so the freezer had a hard time pulling heat out of it but it is finally frozen and it's time to take that sucker out when we checked it yesterday it was looking really good as far as clear ice goes it was actually very very clear but then we opened up today and nothing but bubbles alright so yeah before when we looked at this it wasn't all the way frozen and it it still looked really clear which makes me think that we just had a clear surface on it but the inside wasn't frozen yet you can see down here the bubble still like seemed to go down at three quarters to an inch deep I don't think it's gonna be bubbles all the way down I do think we're gonna have a nice clear surface in contact with the silicone let's take it out and see how it looks the molds nice oh man it comes out perfectly doesn't it and the reveal ready okay so we do have bubbles quite of ways through there but that looks really good you know how some people refer to diamonds as ice haha I think this is taking it literally check this out it's like air hockey it's awesome you know what we should make one of these out of dry ice it's so shiny it just cracked there we just set this down and you know what I really want to do with this Nate since it's already gonna crack in it I kinda want to take this outside and dunk it through the basketball hoop let's do it okay [Music] [Music] it didn't break so there we have a guy's a diamond play button replicator case what do you think about that Nate I like it I think we're gonna have to find a lot of different things that we can cast in our mold if you've got anything you want to see us cast in this mold leave us a comment down below we want to hear about it hey guys hope you enjoyed this video really do if you want to see the next one we've got one up in the top left corner there you can click the one down the bottom is the one YouTube thinks you should be watching next and if you're not already subscribed click the bomb in the center to join the club
