Boxio composting toilet. Would you use this separating toilet in YOUR van?

I'm John from Whitewater Vans and today we're taking a look at the boxio toilet what's good about it what maybe isn't my favorite features about it and whether it's the right toilet for you and your van let's take a [Music] look okay guys we're doing an unboxing of boxio so let's see what we got [Music] here I've read the instructions our boxio needs just a little bit of um [Music] installation [Music] I want to start out by talking a little bit about the features I really like about this boxio toilet to start with it's very lightweight and portable which means you can easily take it from wherever it's at in your van to a comfortable spot outside if you wanted to have a great view if you want to use it in your van we're going to talk about the smell in just a moment when we look inside there is a separation between the Poo side and the P side and this is all cleaned out you can take a look in here uh this is a separating toilet in fact that's one of the beauties of all of these composting toilets is that they're separating toilets you don't have to determine ahead of time if I'm going number one or number two you just sit down you do your business and it's all good now on the P side of this there is a 5 L uh jug underneath this uh it comes with a little stopper so you can simply put the stopper in when you're driving around you're not going to get uh splashes and smells coming out of the peide uh little note the p is where most of the smell typically comes from so that little stopper is great it's also nice because that's a relatively large uh pee hole that goes down into The Jug which is nice because uh it least it helps with aiming to not have splashing too much for both men and women uh and while we're talking about aiming this is we've never had an issue with men or women with this you simply sit down and you do your business and whether you're making a deposit or going P um the aiming has never been an issue if I lift up to see what's down below here we simply have a plastic poo container and a PE container and as I mentioned that PE container is 5 L it has a bit of of a gasket that the top is going to lock into and so there's no spills associated with that and really no odor once you put that little plug in and it's very easy to carry this out and dispose of it they also send a cap that is closed off if you want to completely close off the cap or maybe have a second back uh backup unit if you wanted to close off one and put a second one down into the container on the Poo side we simply have a small plastic bucket with a lid the lid comes in handy and this is a layering system so there's no agitator associated with it we use bags the system comes with uh quite a few bags two or three rolls of bags that go in here of a hemp based composting material so you put a little composting in the bottom into your bag which is into your bucket and it's ready to go I just lay the the top right down in the middle and get it out of the way and now the system is primed and ready to go you can sit down to your business it's no problem put in the little plug when you go to drive around if you've done two or three deposits you can simply take that lid pop it over the Poo container and close it down and it really kind of seals off some of those smells so I mentioned the smells a moment ago uh there's very little smells if any from this toilet once that compost starts to occur and it's really not it's not going through a full composting process what getting is an aerobic decomposition which is the growth of some bacteria and mold and that's really what helps to control the smells that happens right away this won't compost for 6 to 12 months but the bacterial and mold growth happens right away and that's a good thing because it controls the odors associated with that but you can put this little cap over the top and control the odors a little bit more just remember take that cap back off if you think you're going to need to go number two again often times in the evening when we get ready for bed we know that we might get up in the middle of the night to pee and we'll just leave it ready to go so that no matter what happens in the middle of the night the toilet's all set and ready to go it is like I mentioned extremely lightweight so we can easily take this and carry it wherever we need to go speaking of the size that's one of the benefits but it is a little bit longer this is kind of a pro and a con what's nice about that additional length is when you go to sit down it's extremely comfortable lengthwise it is a little short widthwise so if you're used to rocking up on a side to wipe uh be warned that it could easily kind of tip so be careful of the side to side tip ability of it um but it's just something that you know once you use it a couple times maybe you stand up a little bit more it's not a big issue but it is a little bit less stable from side to side the length is comfortable but it's also a little bit longer than most toilets so that may or may not fit in your van make sure you kind of measure your available space and the width of the unit to make sure it's going to fit last thing I want to mention here on the size of this is that it's actually fairly shallow unit but it comes with an additional storage on the base there's a couple of Clips you can lift off and Below we have additional uh composting material as I mentioned they send some hemp they send numerous bags so you've got additional bags you've got that additional lid that I mentioned and you could put extra rolls of toilet paper so right in your unit no matter where you happen to be is all of your additional materials and then these clips just pop right back on the sides when you're done with that so it's actually a a really well-designed lightweight very functional little system the entire top comes right out easily to take it to someplace where you've got some water and and wash it out in fact the whole thing comes apart very easily for washing there is a little bit of assembly maybe 5 to 10 minutes when you first get the unit you don't need any tools they provide what you need but these four little pins in here need to be installed into the edges so that the lid can sit over the top of those pins 5 or 10 minutes to put that together and the system is ready to go coming to you from inside the van to give you a quick summary on the boxio toilet it's easy to assemble easy to use Easy to clean lightweight portable there's not much about it that's not to like it's a smaller unit so you're not going to get a whole lot of use without having to sort of change it every few days but most of the time that's not a problem I could see using this uh for Vans for car camping uh just really carrying it around as a portable backup solution or as your regular Solution on any kind of a a short trip thanks for watching we'll see you on the road
