I am tired well hello shiny crafty people it's Tim Totton here and welcome back to the channel um I am actually tired because yesterday was the culmination of about six months of work to put on an event called Ted X Eustace and I thought today I would go to my workshop and just do something fun and something to give to um one of our speakers who I was the coach for um so I'm going to make him a very cute interesting fun bright and colorful bow cozy um I actually made one for our house too but I made one that can send on to Matthew um you may notice I'm wearing this shirt that says y'all come fix uh you a plate and that's because I got to coach uh Matthew bounds who is your Barefoot neighbor on Tik Tok YouTube Facebook and everywhere else he's an awesome home cook who teaches people how to as he says it throw some in a Crock poot for two and a half minutes and make a great uh meal he was so um gracious to agree to be part part of tedex Eustace that's the conference I've been putting on for seven years here in our town you may have heard of TED Talks or tedex talks if you haven't go check them out there's literally tens or hundreds of thousands of them about all kind of Amazing Ideas worth spreading Matthew's idea worth spreading was a recipe for creating aggressively positive online communities and I was so excited to work with him for the last six months to craft his talk and he gave it yesterday on our stage now it's going to be a couple more weeks before the video is ready for everyone to see and in the meantime I thought well let me uh find some way to make him a nice thank you gift and uh include the people on my channel to see what that looks like and also hey I'll put all of his links in the description below because I want you to go check him out too he puts awesome videos together and does really great recipes in fact um not only do I have his cookbook but um I've been literally trying some of the recipes and they're really good I am so excited about it so um he's also just a really good guy and a great friend so get into what we're talking about though I want to make some Bowl cozies um and I recorded a video just a few minutes ago showing how I did that with this set of prepackaged co uh cozy forms that I found on Amazon the only problem is these didn't come with any instructions so I'm going to have to walk you through what I did and then in a future video I'll show you how to do it with a better your own version with some full cotton batting uh and cotton fabric so join me down at the cutting table and we'll talk about getting this project started so no matter what type of bow cozy we choose to make we're going to need an inner Fabric and an outer fabric I have two layers here that I'm going to use and I'll need something to put on the inside now you could certainly I bought some a bunch of these from Amazon I will put a link in the description below but I'm going to tell you why these are maybe harder than if you just use some 100% cotton batting something like a warm and natural now I will tell you that I started making making these about uh myself about 10 or 12 years ago I mean they've been around a long time and but I only ever used them with whatever batting I had and I didn't ever tell anyone that they could go into the microwave this says they can go into the microwave this this particular fabric see what I would do is I would heat up whatever I wanted in the microwave put it into the bulk and then you know carefully get it into the bow cozy and then I could use that or I would literally um you know put the bowl in and then Ladle in whatever it was going to be hot it's it's interesting about that is I never tried to put it in the microwave but I did actually today I I put this one into the microwave I've put water in for three and a half minutes let it go and go and go into a bowl obviously and when I brought it out it was perfectly fine it it didn't burn through this material even though I feel like this is super thin the other problem is these didn't come with any instructions online so I'm going to show you how I'm going to do this them and I'll show you on this one here so the reason I don't think it's all that great um to to just use these by themselves I spent an embarrassingly long amount of time trying to heat press this to the fabric thinking that this had adhesive on it I thought that was the value of it there's no adhesive on this version that I've used so I spent like 10 minutes trying to adhere this and it would kind of stick and then it would just peel right off so then I used spray adhesive and unfortunately it kind of bubbled the fabric up here a little bit so I'm I don't know I I what I've done now is just transferred those lines onto both pieces of fabric this is the inside of the lining Fabric and then this is the fabric that's going to go around the top you know this should be the outer fabric so I'm going to line that back up and continue drawing my lines on so I can cut it out so so that makes it a little bit less fun to do when when when I did this one I had spray adhesive it just took forever so I'm going to go ahead and cut this out I'm going to use a rotary cutter for this but you could use certainly uh something else the other problem is when you I got to make sure that the that fabric is Not underneath the other problem with this is that when you um you could draw it on and then cut it with a pair of Scissors by the way one of the problems with this is that uh when you go to sew it you've got to sew through this big layer of fabric right here and that's really is problematic I I don't know what the workaround is from that I did try to sew through um I'm going to do it now for this I'm going to sew the darts those are these sections right here I'm going to sew them with out um before I actually cut any Fabric in there and I'll sew those just along the line so that this fabric doesn't have any uh darts through it so that's what I did on this one as well and it lays nice and flat because there isn't all the extra bulk in the seams uh in the seam of the oh I did miss the corner here so uh what I'm going to do first is I'm going to go to my machine this is why all the extra steps I think are crazy I'd rather just use the the batting I'm going to go first and just Stitch a real thin Stitch all around the edge here just to base these two pieces together and then I will fold and Stitch these so come to the sewing machine we'll do that part first so I certainly could have done this part uh first before I draw the lines I could have just stitched it down and then drawn the lines where they're going to be so that's kind of a mistake maybe something you'd want to just sew it to a piece of fabric and then trim it later I really could have done that would have been a lot easier but I didn't so we're going to do it this way I'm going to use less than a quart of an inch this machine's a little bit loud um I'm using a different one of our sewing machines it's the same kind a jomi 1600p but this is a very early original one called a dbx I've probably owned it now seven or eight years and it's one of our backups um a lot of you know that I own a company that makes blankets and quilts for funeral homes and I did not want to use one of the main stations where our people typically so because you know we got a busy we coming up and I don't want to mess up anyone's stuff so you'll see I've gone around and stitched that entire thing and now what I'm going to do is going to come in and fold these fold this right in half right along there and kind of feel through I can feel where the seam is and just go ahead and sew these I'm Not sewing through the white I'm sewing through the fabric to the side of it so if you'll see here I'm Not sewing through that white I sewed through the fabric next to it so that when I open it up up it won't interfere and I'll be able to trim that tab if I want to let me give you a slightly different angle so here we are back here I'm going to fold this in half here and just make sure I line up where those two go in together just get them lined up right at the top there and even on this one I can start from the outside instead of the inside just going to make sure that I back stitch at the top and the bottom so that's now been done so that one opens up as well you'll see on the other side it opens up and that fabric just kind of sticks out Peaks out from behind those materials and let's go around and keep doing that on all four sides just make sure we when we look at them that they line up here at the end I can look at them this way yeah looking [Music] good all right only one more now this is where I used a spray adhesive in here and unfortunately it had kind of buckled and gone a little weird there so I am all right we've got those four parts done and then I'll do the same on the other fabric I'll just set that out of the way and I'll bring this gray fabric now the difference is I don't have any uh of that batting material in there so I just have to make sure when I fold it that I double check that those red lines that I drew are lining up seem to be can fold the whole thing in half so this one you definitely have to um you definitely have to double check everything because it won't you have to cut it out ahead of time because it's not going to uh you don't have those materials to to show for it I'll make sure those have lined up again this is not I mean this is kind of the hardest part the next part will look hard but I don't think it is I don't think it's difficult at all the biggest part is that you're turning now thick fabric will be the next hardest part because you've got to marry this fabric to this fabric now that has all that extra cushion in it but if we're just precise and take our time it'll pop together really well all right let's go back over to the cutting table so at this point to me pins are going to be more valuable than Clips know a lot of times we like to use Clips what I'm going to do is turn um this inside out because I want to sew along the um I want to sew along this material to make sure I'm getting the right place and I want to lay this flat in my machine I don't want to have to try to lay it this way in the machine I want to lay it flat in here so I'm GNA turn this inside out and then turn this so yeah no not yeah this is that fabric is and then I'll put this where the two pretty Fabrics go against one another like this and I go and just match those points right here these points right where they go together match those and I'm just going to leave all this bulky extra fabric in here it's not really going to cause a problem as far as I know and I'll put a pin straight through that line that I stitched and come out through the line that I stitched on the other side that's valuable very important I'm just going to go match those up first match every one of those up first just make sure I pop my seams the same direction here I push it to the right here I'm going to push it to the right here I push it to the left here I'm going to push it to the left that'll help them Nest into one another so there we go in same thing here now we'll massage everything else in just a minute but I got to get this part done first there we go and the last one here like that I'm kind of move it around getting close to myself because I need to do something with it there we go so our next step is to make sure that all of these points get as close to being right as possible so I will massage all my fabric up to the top points and if you had Clips here this would be fine to clip it but I I am going to pin it as well you can pin as far around as you want to this is really up to what your comfort level is I'm pinning I I keep thinking I'm in your view but I have to look back at the camera and see that I'm not all right back up here as I do that for this I'm just going to pin the very top one here and then same thing over here so that as I go around stitching it it'll all catch I'm going to use a good quarter inch seam allowance on this so it really will catch every bit of it that I can so now I've gone through pulled it what I have to do is decide where I'm going to start and stop so I can turn the whole thing inside out I'm actually going to start and stop along here and turn this side so I'll probably put a pin here and a double pin so if I put two pins in here it'll tell me start and stop right on this space and I have another pin here so I'll do move that over and give that a start two pins so that tells me I'm going to start sewing here I'm going to start sewing here and go all the way around and stop when I come back to this point so it's time to go to the sewing machine all right remember I'm going to start on the two pins and go all the way around so I'll start right there but I'm going to take the pins out I don't want to sew over them and I'm going to use my full quarter inch seam allowance there St the need down I'm actually going to go off the stitching here too go off the side it's going to help me turn it later I'll show you what I mean so I'm back and I get back to my quarter inch and I'm just going to slowly go around I'll hold my finger down and then pull that pin out remember I had this fabric going one side go right down to the point turn it on that again you might go a little slower than this on my machine I actually have a a slide that lets you decide how fast to go it's funny cuz it's got a a jack rabbit for the fastest actually a drawing of a jack rabbit like look over here there's a drawing of a jack rabbit then a regular rabbit and then a turtle so I'm going at the Jack Rabbit speed if I feel like it while I'm stitching um so it's kind of funny all right make sure my seams all are laying the right direction as I come through take the pin out at The Point stop at that point it's very important that way I can turn and get a nice sharp point it's not terribly important once this thing folds it's it won't really be an issue and then okay we got to turn these Fabrics I I started one the wrong way and I've have to change all of them now into the the point I'm stopping and I'm super close I'm almost back at the uh at the double pin that's how fast this goes it's just four sides to me this is kind of basic this is not that hard to do now your machine might not be designed for this many layers of fabric if that's the case uh I would use a softer material like the batting version I'm going to show you so I backed off of that and I'm doing a back stitch off of that because when I go to turn this inside out that's really going to hold and it's going to turn those edges inside out for me I'll go ahead and take the pin out of that corner right there those pieces now I'm going to go around with my scissors and cut around the edges I'm just cutting in a very small amount you'll see what I've done there I've cut in just to clip toward the stitching cuz I want these rounded edges is to turn better you don't have to go around the entire thing just the parts where it starts to turn now be careful you don't clip through the stitches so if you have a nice pair of sharp scissors you can just literally put the tip just a little bit inside those threads and then snip and like you can see that here I'm not exactly even straight on my stitching it's not going to matter this material is so uh powerful and strong it's going to overpower really the stitching and really just make that a gentle curve as it goes in we're cutting through this line of stitching but that's okay cuz that was just my basting stitch it was getting the lining fabric to line up with the top fabric the only other place you might want to clip would be here at these little Corners too because that's going to be a point where it's a little bit um harder to turn if you want to make those a little easier to turn and I'm going to go through and cut the other two since I did this one so I'm going to come back to this this one and just cut right there and here is the same way right here just don't cut the stitching carefully don't cut the stitching now I'm going to turn this whole thing inside out I have my spot where I didn't Stitch through and so I'm going to take this and turn it inside out I'll grab my hand in here and I'll flip it inside out this is why you really back stitch good at the opening because you want as you're manhandling this fabric you want it to be able to open up easily I just put my fingers in there to get these Corners to turn now you're folding over that heavy interfacing so you'll see here how it's sticking the fabric up a little bit you've got to really go in there and press right along that edge so that it does cuz see right here it's shoving up so much you really have to fold it over I'm getting my fingers in there to push out those Corners look at that in here to push out these Corners all right so we got all that turned inside out that way and I'm going to go back around all these Corners this is where it would be helpful to use your iron and press this so why don't we go over to my cute little iron and we'll press that and press these Folds in where there need to be and we can start closing it up all right so as we're here at the iron you'll notice how it wants to flip those edges around you really got to get them to lay flat so I'm going to come to the iron and lay that flat and com press it press it flat with the iron use a little steam even to really get that stuff to go nice and flat I love steam because it sets fabric so beautifully I'm going to do the straight edges there that gets that nice Edge straight see how it did that it flattened it out and the same thing here with the corner and I'm going to pull back with this the black fabric on the or the gray fabric on the inside till I can see that color underneath and now I know it's nice and flat so I can pull back on the black well I'm calling it Black but it's really gray the gray Fabric and then just steam the heck out of it same thing here in this corner it's really wanting to roll it underneath but I push it down flatten that out one of the things that you have to recognize about doing this type of project is that we're are have to work with Fabrics that can go into a microwave so you don't want Fabrics that are either going to transmit heat for you real easily so you got to be careful about that but also you don't want Fabrics that have metal in them so in fact I have some Fabrics I really like that I thought oh I really like that but no it's got that gold might have a little metal in it this certainly has metal in it and even the two Fabrics I wanted to use that I really love I looked at I thought oh I want these waves because it'll be like you know soup is hot they have a gold line of Fleck in them and so that would be a little bit of a metallic and would probably cause a problem inside a microwave so I had to not use those Fabrics even though I really like the look of them so I'm going to finish this up and then get back over to the sew machine so that we can uh have this done and you'll be surprised by what this how good this looks the last step here is of course to get the opening here closed let me give you a slightly different angle of this I've got to make sure that when I do this I fold along and what's helping fold this in is where I did that Stitch I told you about so I'm going to come over here and just let that Stitch I put in help continue where I had started to iron so I got that going and then I can fold the top fabric as well so I fold that so what I'm going to do is I'm going to match I'm going to fold this down right about a/4 of an inch just that one point and some pins over here and then I'm going to fold this point also down about a quar of an inch right then I can just match those two up and put a single pin through that now it's a lot easier to grab those and push them in you see I'm pushing it in my finger now when I grab those and push those in it can bring it down to my machine and hit the iron there as well same thing here I will I'll put my thumb in there and make sure all of that's folding over the way it should and this this fabric is trying to fold and twist on me so I'm going to get back in there in fact watch this this will be another good thing I'm not even going to try to get the top fabric with it I'll take a couple pins and just pin that down until I can get it ironed properly see I'm pinning this fabric down so I'll just iron that part here then I can get the other top fabric to go right on top of it [Music] lined up over the top and then I'll iron it in place I need a video I need like a cinematographer to make this actually look right it's hard to get the right angles now I'm just going to Blitz it with some steam see how the steam pouring off oh that worked out beautifully all right back to the saw machine all right I'm going to start at the space that I folded because that's what area really really has to get caught and I'm going to use a just an edge Stitch all the way around this entire cozy so I'm using literally I'm going to put this Stitch right next to that to the seam or right next to the uh needle I'm putting the needle right up next to the edge of the fabric cuz I want to catch every little thing as I go by I don't want to have any chance that I didn't fold enough so I'm going to go through there you want to see it close closer don't yeah there we are and as I go through I'm just carefully turning it to match I want this to look nice and even all the way around now if you had any decorative stitching this would be a cute place to do decorative stitches on your machine could certainly be a cute place I'm just checking every once in a while to make sure I actually uh ironed this flat I can feel with my fingers underneath like here I see that it's kind of rolled a little bit so I'll just be real careful as I go through to backtrack it I'm really doing that so I don't have any fabric really buckling um so that that you know one side of the fabric doesn't have a lot of extra fabric and the other side is pulled tight a pieces sticking out here and there this one almost a little over now it's obviously very contrasty with this particular fabric but other Fabrics you wouldn't notice if you use the same fabric inside now I you can really fly through this particular part and I'm back to where I started so I'll just back stitch it and Bam that's finished we have finished the bow cozy now I you just decide which side you like to be the outside you like the the the sort of psychedelic rainbowy kind of fabric on the outside inside or do you want it on the outside for the bowl that's how it works out so that's this particular version I will show you how I make the other version in another video um but let's wrap all this up and talk about it all right oh there you are wait where are you okay there you are so that's the finished bull cozy that I just made this is a bigger one uh than the original size so they came in two sizes the the set that I bought from Amazon had two different sizes available so um I made one of each uh so a couple of feedbacks on this you'll notice that the fabric is a little Loosey Goosey in here I don't know if you're meant to make both layers and then have two layers of that interior fabric when I tested it it was fine with just one so I made just one it certainly holds up just fine it's a little big for this size Bowl obviously um but this is a very small bowl so this would work really great for the bowls that I use to make shrimp and grits at our house um but this is more of like an everyday small sup Bowl kind of a look those are the two bowls I think they're very beautiful and sculptural and certainly work fine with the material that I purchased on Amazon but there were all those steps that you saw if you're going do one of these and make these very pretty design please go ahead for it and just recognize all the sort of extra steps and then come back for a future video where I show you a much easier way to do this with uh full cotton batting just remember the issues I told you um that you should always test anything you make see if it actually holds up the microwave watch it VI vant uh vigilantly to make sure that it doesn't catch on fire or spark or have any metal uh in the fabric at all also don't make sure sure you don't use any metal fabric because those of course will cause a problem that is the bowl cozy and hey um until next time please stay crafty and if you haven't had a chance yet go down into the description below and find all the links to um your Barefoot neighbors socials so you can see uh his amazing work and when it's time for his tedex talk to hit the the air I will definitely make sure I let you know where it is and when it's available uh so you can check it out yourself so until next time folks stay crafty bye for now all right well I almost don't want to give this one away but I've already said on video that I'm giving it to Matthew so get ready Matthew
