[Music] but they've been one figure out standing on this series which I don't think you need me to say who and in both and we know [Applause] it was the summer of summers for England not matched in my view since the 1960-61 tide test series in Australia and before that 1936-37 when the Australians to kneel down after two matches won the final three tests and the series then one man bradman was more responsible than anyone else for the victory and this year 1981 one man Ian Botha made it all possible for England there were many other contributions marvellous ones too from the rest of the England team but holding center stage for better or worse throughout the summer was Ian Botham an Australia were poised to go to nil in series he made a Teddy Lee a century that was sometimes lucky and always very very spectacular Ed's Burton and Old Trafford with his Marvis bowling and another brilliant century were just as spectacular but there wasn't an ounce of luck in either of those matches the whole series became a marvelous fairytale for England sports followers it wasn't just cricket fans who were cheering both him alone sports fans and even those little interested in sport was swept away on a wave of national delight Ian Botham was a hero short memories he well perhaps they are because if you think about it there was only 11 days after Lords that Headingley took place and if you have a look back at Lords I don't know that we really would have expected a hero to have been accorded a reception of this kind as he walked back to the pavilion returns the silence was that your lowest point of the earring certainly a point I don't want to remember or try not to remember too much em yeah it's I had mixed fuse I'd make a premeditated that I was going to if it was out that have a go at the lab why I was really interested just quick runs and I wasn't a pair didn't really bother me and that's what I got how long was the walk back he got longer and longer it seems you're taking two steps forward and one back all the time you you rate yourself as being super optimistic what were your feelings between then and the time he got to hitting me well a lot of things happen near the I decided to give the captaincy out resignation and I felt that there was a new page a new chapter and let's see if we can write it in a more acceptable way for myself and just take the games it came because I all I could do is hope that it Headingley and I didn't even know if I was gonna be selected for head anything and when I was late so I thought we'll just go out there and play and he's gone there near both of us done it third ball [Applause] the old magic returns with a bit of help I think one must save from the pitch because it did appear to keep rather low but what a start and what a morale booster for Faison and indeed for Prairie and bringin desert oh he could be our Monday's go to Nintendo cam uses eggs sweetie [Applause] once again sweet boy to the left-hander weakened by the swing [Music] [Applause] [Applause] Nathan gets his first five since [Music] he took over as Captain and that was the game two in which Bob Taylor 40 years old today broke the world record for test victims for 28 [Applause] or nine being bacon six four ninety five thirty nine point two overs and eleven maidens he was the star of the show before it was in the air for about 20 yards but he hit [Applause] initiative the way the feeling side that's doing that one thing God is not to do anything silly same treatment Super Shot that evolution from Alderman [Applause] 21 to both them wishes someone almost unplayable and I think Rodney Marsh might even agree each other pick that up beautifully rape a square leg fifty-five to bake them now [Applause] that's exactly right [Applause] six and the street - right at 46 [Applause] by so to see him the same [Applause] the shackles of dr. measures [Applause] that is I think that might be saying he's passed 50 since his last innings as captain at trantridge last year Danny's gone very fine delivery indeed Pithom in that over just losing concentration and Rodney Marsh appropriately breaks the world test record off the bowling of Dennis Lillee who must surely have given despite both them splendid innings England failed to save the follow-on by just 28 runs and quite rightly Kim Hughes asked them to go in again that's the situation at the start England needed 221 runs to avoid an innings defeat Graham Gooch the man out caught on Saturday evening by alderman of Lille without scoring boycott not not out and brief or not out six for one they well time stroke [Applause] and all hours nearly again from the text-align end let's go Charlie long chase back for Hughes but it's gonna be a vain one [Applause] being very precise on anything slightly over picture so far this morning yes easy as you like thank you very much to Terry all about a third slip and the first victim of the morning for Dennis Lillee and an excellent delivery this pitched on the off stump he had to pry at it and it just left him off the scene [Applause] of chasing and throwing them in the clever Chapel and defined social David yeah [Applause] just very well bold but my word it did cut a long way off the sea melon border safely took it there at slip I reckon that must have pitched around about middle and leg and finished up outside off stump there David Gower is gone for nine thirty seven four three now excellent piece of bowling from Terry alderman I'm not too sure there's very much Guerra could have done about that that's close yes I'm afraid he has to go lbw again second time in the match Mike getting and alderman has struck again he removed Gower there are he's taken getting and England 41 for four with the ceremony or now I got cash - 18 it's off the mark that for one instant you must have wondered where it was getting showing that he can attack as well when the opportunity arises it would go before chapel catching up a bit just inside the long off boundary safely way before very similar to the strength of which really got off the mark whether you're spacing material [Applause] shots let's go like a rocket great shot spear doing the right thing by the skipper Mike Braley who's there with Rodney hog in here that one but still a beautiful straight from you Peter we'll need to bring up the hundred for England 103 for for now and Willie let's go [Applause] beautifully placed now that is really good thinking a superb piece of captaincy a magnificent piece of bowling and Peter Willie is gone that's one of the best pieces of technical thinking I've seen in a long time very very good piece about cricket by Australia there it is Mario the delivery was tremendous because it calmed that little bit higher and got Peter will be a little bit tough down and he really only chipped it rather than hit it to that short-term memory but very very fine performance by the Australian side them and what a nice way for Dennis Lillee to become the greatest ever we could take a history of anglo-australian tests Hewitt rumbles record 141 [Applause] yeah what a triumph for him it would be if he could still be Betty at six o'clock this evening I'll be shot [Applause] pitching up again inviting him to drive needs no second invitation again beautiful time it was backward a square that is four runs unless [Applause] and that's taking a long time to go down and he's gone and a very reluctant leaver of the crease all the man getting the vital breakthrough for Australia when it seemed that boycott just simply couldn't be penetrated and he does not look very happy with that but that's partly I'm sure because he's not put a foot wrong [Applause] missing the ball a result of that happening 446 after two hundred and fifteen minutes of superb defense [Applause] [Applause] it's a Bob Taylor off the mark a soft dismissal but very well build the man place there Fred and Ray bright thinking no mistake a simple catch lifting a bit in Bob Taylor sometimes inclined to pop the ball up in that area becomes the seventh man out and all the ones fourth victim rather disappointed with himself warrants [Applause] for good shot too smashed away to the left hand of cover what stopped straight piece like is a lovely shot superb piece of feeling to get to it [Music] betrayus [Applause] 51 runs still needed to avoid a ninnies defeat and even though both him and Dilli were going so well only three wickets in hand a splendid shot very wide very well fetched up in grand early continuing his successful policy before tea Oh splendid shot and that brings up the 50 foundation [Applause] Rochelle Buena Vista [Music] another tremendous blow through the covers and run the beginner over the wicket they're coming all the life to DRAM delay at the moment and that now is his highest test score for England 39 not action replay from last over and he got 16 and the second innings of that his first Test match at Perth and batted for a long time in both innings and particular in the second innings in a losing cause not too similar to this one although in that in that occasion he he better defensively for a long period so there's no doubt that he has the ability and he brings up the 200 to a great chair from this Yorkshire crowd leave 2z the urn team at least put another five here [Applause] [Music] and not quite very intended but it brings in his 50 nonetheless the second 50 of the match and that broad smile [Applause] my own sense of enjoyment [Applause] safe at the top of his head a bit of a risky very that but he's got away with it [Applause] I think he hit this one somewhere near the splice he's such a powerful man he carried a fish made on just eight need it now to make Australia bad again [Applause] three balls in a row and [Applause] the last airing a bit too like button he's really having a lovely time and so the crowd [Music] good Sunday leg shot this overslept or runs all the way absolute thoroughbred strain [Applause] this is what we were saying a little while ago this is a traffic jam he stays where he is he doesn't pull out front and he hits a North in the middle ami wouldn't go into the lane [Music] [Applause] and he was putting a great deal of thought as you would expect into his field placings here [Music] there's the partnership between [Applause] and there's 70 minutes which of if they haven't turned the match upside down [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] I suspect it was always on the cards once all women decided that would attack [Applause] complete change bangle [Applause] what a splendid knock that was from dream dilly 56 old ottoman and that gives all the women his fifth wicket and chasing it [Applause] it's going straight into the confectionary stolen out again [Applause] beautiful kid but a wonderful follow-through before to spend 100 the great innings by Ian Botham 50 in the first innings a century in the second and six wickets Marvis all-round performance to met some of the others please produce Marvis tribute as well from his teammates all of whom are gathered and my granny is just to be in the mood to stick around safe for unorthodox been available [Applause] and up comes the 300 [Applause] and Israel [Applause] it's safe it's going for his 25th fall that is endotherms highest test score [Applause] [Music] [Applause] walsim getting tired [Applause] [Music] bring up on the scoreboard 123 ahead England last ball the day the new ball will be due tomorrow and he's got the signal he wanted so he had the strike in the morning this man who has become once again a national hero that was great performance but you did need a bit of help from three fellows there Graham dilly and Chris old and Bob Willis coming at number 11 yeah I was just just looking at the end of that tape running the last ball there with Bob I don't know if you noticed but he hesitates halfway down the wicked and that's far as saying go go go which was a not the best of calls and the circumstances in Bob I don't said to myself I'm sure if you're saying go or no and we've got the big shuffle I think if the field of pigs that we could have struggled but obviously yes they made a great gram did he played absolutely magnificent ly when he came to look I just said he said what we're doing I said well look let's just enjoy ourselves and give it a whack and see what happens cuz he can strike the ball as well as anybody as he showed yeah and he hit very very hard well 356 all out and Australia just 132 win that's almost nothing on any sort of a Test match pitch first we could to go down Graham would I don't put straight cane on that and a suspect early mayor [Applause] he might have squeezed it into the ground and shouted and see what happened we go to paper understeers 13 for one court tailor bold vote on wood out for 10 that was the super optimist then um well we've said we've said before went out that and it was one of these wickets where we felt that if you got one wicked you could easily get three or four and if I'm right we did we got two very quick we could do it Kim Hughes and Graham gallop very quickly just before lunch and suddenly the whole format of the game changed around and so Nathan you know there's a lot more pressure on them and the wicket wasn't I don't think you could call it a test standard wicket and I think that showed was that the ball had got Trevor Chappell out that got very big and very and went very quickly as well Kim Hughes advance gallops there was in quantity or Bob Bell magnificent he well I think the Australians christen him after that bustling Bob they steamed in but he he bowled magnificently but he exploited what there was in the wicket and by bowling that lens I think that's why he got the results he bowls very very well okay 74 to win and here is Bob Willis coming in from the coast Delaney and he's been switched from the football ground end by Mike brilli steaming in now and he's bowling - Trevor champion it really was that difficult delivery he's gone and there's not much that could be done about that Trevor chopper he had no chance very good piece of Arlington Bob Willis the second wicket goes down at 56 Trevor Chappell called Taylor bald Willis for 8 and Dyson is 29 not out bold and well played [Applause] get it down very well the good over from Bob Willis well very very similar to the ball that got Greg Chappell out perhaps fractionate more offside and used it very well - what a good catch everything is running for both in' runs wickets and catches and the Australian captain goes for naught what both involve Willis Hughes is gone and it's 58 for three Oh - Supercat sack reflex action there that was gone without storing for with Dyson 29 not out let's catch some what a great session for England good job four runs Hartman straight for Australia [Music] gets his first big another batch whatever shall we get to and such a stored in this Australian inside sixty-five 565 needed by baguettes to fall he's got a touch of Hicks he's gone would you pay so well in the what policies extra pace [Applause] what works approached excitement and England fielders [Applause] well is his fourth wicked played and off the mark - for a bright 56 - when will is tomorrow in the DNA's underneath it many corners [Applause] wasn't even available with it [Applause] sooner or later Robbie Marsh had to go for the big head Oh [Music] 5:24 at the moment yes he's going to talk to these on when is his taykitty six minute one [Applause] the sensational victory which is going to go down as one of the most amazing tests with visible time [Applause] [Applause] little before this time yesterday English cricket was being buried that's very effective indeed four runs that is he's a most kenny cricketer Dennis Lillee that was extremely clever thinking on his part quite deliberate uppercut astonishing shot he definitely gave it a lift tactics on both sides right these two players many structures they can and England must keep the ball just as they can't quite Drive that's a good shot and was very well picked up I brought it didn't get up all that much crystal dragging this one down a little and right right on to it like a shot but get that I don't think that he got it well enough to bang it into the fence that's square and again I didn't think it was all that bad a ball it seemed to me to be picked up off a round middle stock that becomes the hundred for Australia hundred four eight seventeen now too bright and nine to Lily thirty to win that's a good shot it just couldn't have been placed better by Dennis Lillee you wouldn't believe that the wall could get between Chris old and Graham Tilly down there on the boundary Lily is 17 right nineteen the context and Lily is miscued it to Madan didn't cited to stop to take a great catch hundred ten to nine and the first one willis got up into Lily's half produced emitted nearly after 70 in court getting called third step certainly intend to carry this one and Chris seem to be have it absolutely under control [Music] that carrot as well [Music] just as well as not Keith Fletcher [Applause] it's all over and it is one of the most fantastic victories ever known in Test cricket history Bob Willis eight wickets a fabulous performance England have won this match after one of the most astonishing fight backs you can ever see and what a remarkable scorecard that is 111 England regard that as the devil's number well there's no Devils number about it today Australia beaten and England winning by 18 runs and the men who made it all possible for England really sensational performance this 15.1 overs three maidens eight for 43 it is best ever Test match performance Bob Willis and I don't think I've ever seen him ball better he bowed like a man inspired out there today there's almost as though he was in another world performance which I think in my opinion I capped his performance that came well much delay evil let's just take you back now from the palm of his something that's not quite so pleasant losing the first Test match ever series against the Australians how did that feel I felt as it's a peculiar test matter because I felt if we caught our caches we'd have won the test match on reflection but we didn't and we lost and a very big future so I still felt we could win it on the last day well let's just have a look now and see what you said to Peter West right at the very end of that last day after you'd gone down to Kim Hughes side how do you react to being made captain one at a time it's a bit like being on the gallows isn't it a big drop well I'm not it doesn't particularly worry me and I think my family feel the pressure a little bit more than I did one at a time but I think I'm improving all the time as a captain and I'm thinking I'm hopefully things are starting to get under start getting some more order with the bat and the bowling I'm quite happy with so hopefully if I come a little bit more form then that'll shut my critics out so looking forward as long as you take an optimistic outlook oh very much so yes I've said all along I think this serious is gonna be very close and I think it's one that the public are going to enjoy very very much in that interview there with Peter wish you look very very happy but what a contrast with the one we're going to show you now when you talk to him at Lord's in we gather that you've told the chairman of selectors that you don't feel prepared to carry on as captain on a one match basis what was it exactly that you said to him oh well I just said to the Chairman is that I feel that it's unfair on myself and on the team to continue on a one match basis because but I don't know what's happening and the team doesn't know what's happening and I feel that it certainly have started to affect my game a little bit in the sense that I'm thinking about that Indian last day of a Test match what's gonna happen and I feel that it would be better for me and for the team to know exactly what is going on and hopefully we can get on there when the series had you and your colleagues your fellow selectors in fact made up your minds earlier in the afternoon that you were going to make a change in captain anyway yes we had made up their minds and then for the main reason we were a bit worried as to IANS form we felt that he's improving as a captain but over these last few months he's had a rough time I mean he Western dish was really hard to he'd come back and his actual form hasn't been too good and I think that his family has been Harris everything's been Harris so so we felt that it would be a good thing perhaps to to give him a rest for a few matches from captaincy that he's and then get back into the groove again who do you think will be the new captain then I don't know I who would you choose well in my view the bloke the captain that I feels best captain in this country and has been guided played a lot of cricket and and that's why trailing that was a good choice have you ever thought of becoming a national selector no I've always admired Mike and I've always felt that he's the respire a long way the best captain I've ever played under I guess very hard to explain but he seems to have this seems to bring the best out of everybody around him and everyone there's a willing willingness to win everyone wants to do well for him and I think we also have a great yeah I certainly have a created a respect for him and I'm sure the other players do as well that's a tremendous attribute for any captain to have it if the players feel like that about him I think that's the most important thing of all and Mike really won the match at heading Leah skipper his first time back but even with all those attributes you listed there you're still having problems today twisting when we got through to the final innings because the Australians needed only a hundred and fifty one to win on a pitch where I think most people would think that they should have made those runs here's the first ball of the Australian second innings its willis steaming in from the city end [Applause] because 16,000 odd people here and they all shouted Buddhist lbw to Chris all the first wicket down just two runs on the board and 151 in all needed Chris hold has achieved the breakthrough Australia 14 for one that's a good stroke that's really racing away galas efforts may just catch it but concedes it and the first fall [Applause] oh there's a big shot and that's it but Willis has done it Dyson is out I'll be double didn't get up very high have came back a little bit after ended and Dyson is out for 13 and the second Australian wicket goes down at 19 and every England player was around Big Bob Wallace and this time John Dyson doesn't go forward he's trying to come back now and it keeps slow really that's what did him it's a beautiful stroke but straight down at my foot John Henry's done it a beautiful looking stroke but he obviously didn't keep it down and he hit the only man d'arnot teeth pocket square leg John Embry and with the swipe down his throat and Kim uses gone and this agent is dropped very low difficult chance and suppose there must be some doubt from position here whether that carried it had better look from the camera at the far end very full-length he's edged it oh yes just carried near my trill his right boot at first slip [Applause] and that's beaten guy Willis is the man out the boundary we will cut it off you know he won't I'm straight beautiful time and an indication of just how quickly that our furious 50 up 52 for three that's a beautiful shot Gloria shot there through the covers by Allen border over pitch ball a half volley from Chris old [Applause] and let's go in through four runs and then no ball put away down to long leg giving a free hit there so he made the most of it and you see the umpires signal already out there so 82 on the board now the 50 partnership between these two left-handers [Applause] and that's going away again and it's for more and this is a Grammy Alex answer this time and remarkably to recount that this is the best partnership of any wicked and either side in the macho gives embryo chance to have a spin this dumb Graham yellow border estate most of him over the last few hours is gone tremendous shout going up the yell up girls embryos made the breakthrough is it too late that's the question to be asked now yell up goes for thirty four men out now for eighty seven very well deserve wicket for John Embry see Graham yollop comes down to push him through the onside gets an inside edge onto his pad and it Dolly's up to in both and fielding very close short on the offside didn't quite time that the Garfield is very quick to cut it off [Applause] three launch of Bordeaux and 100 comes up for Australia a little two for four that's another little milestone count those in the dressing room and the pressures on three figures on the board fewer than 50 to make and that's well bailed out of a bit of rough stuff their border is gone to 40 it's a whole room five for five and no one in this match now will make a half century quite astonishing and a very awkward delivery indeed which as you can see bounces flicks the handle or the glove and pops up probably off Alan Bordas body there's the start for Rodney Marsh Chris old won't catch that the outfield very quick and a little touch of sensible aggression there hundred ninety five [Applause] shot for four to short twice in the last four deliveries John Embry once Rodney Marsh cracked away passed point and that one was very good stroke from Kent Paul him a hundred and fourteen for six Rodney Marsh goes trying to hit it away through mid on across the line a hundred and fourteen for six and the crowd has gone noisily berserk [Applause] he's helped no beat Avenue [Applause] first ball and Bacon's on a hat-trick first ball rape right it looked to me as I've kept a bit low and also look to me as though it was absolutely fun fourteen four seven now this is incredible and then comes in Bolton and fires it in a little bit short that absolutely [Applause] and it wasn't far away from it either [Applause] way down the ground - Jeff boycott [Applause] [Music] [Applause] second attempt and Bob Taylor grabbed it nearly has gone twenty-four eight you can see how wide that delivery was and up she goes out she goes thank goodness for that says Bob darling [Music] both meganta parent unless Balu truly is going to be it the joyous triumphant both of their I lost again one so much needed to see the backbone mounting can't go by both women and inspired spell here he goes for 10 121 for 9 with Ontario love and defiant and who would believe it what valueless proud of hat today they've rolled up in their thousands today and this is what they've been looking for to see whacking that through midwicket pitch just outside the off stump went straight through and hit the Austin well Terry alderman on his first tour first major series tremendous success with the ball but the fancy he's got the jitters out there now inflation that's it this time picture Horace Dayton fire Ricketts he grabs a Sun and another memorable victory for England tremendous performances Australia finally dismissed on this fourth day of his fourth Cornhill test for 120 151 they required tremendous scenes here at edge busting this crowd who will never thought it was possible but they came in their towers and hope it was such a result this is entirely tremendous performance by the English bowlers but one must add a lot of fairly innit button from the Australians here today my choice because it really finished them at both um he didn't want to bother you know diddly he thought I think you know now he is just beginning to come back the real confidence that he always used to have it not say he didn't want to Bob but he wondered if other people shouldn't vote ahead of him and he came in and he now he's coming in really hard and it makes all the difference with him if he's coming in hard and hitting the ground hitting the bat and I think he did it for a while at Headingley and he did it again today was a nervous flare well from what Mike said there in that interview you didn't want a bowl I read here in your own piece by and both them that you didn't want a bowl do you think you would have come on at that precise moment had you been captain instead of Mike first was probably not it all changed when John Henry got that wicked atom border yeah and once once Alan border was out and the message that Mike was talking to me right to that pointer where I should bow and I felt that or outed them as I said the oddball tenacity might we try Peter Willie just for an over or two just a little bit of variation from that end and see if he gets any response and then once Sam was John than getting Apple Devon on board in that over then I agreed to Mike I should bulb it too I wasn't too keen he didn't look like it had that much in it for me to be honest okay well it didn't have all that much in it for you because you only picked up five for one yeah yeah could them a little bit more perhaps in well it wasn't quite so good for the Australians at its Bastogne nor was it quite so good for them at all Trafford where they were bowled out in some ridiculously small number of overs but let's take you on now to Old Trafford the way you came out the second inning assumed it was a hundred before four five a bleed of 101 so in effect it's 205 for five and you came out to a standing ovation shades of Lourdes on the last day oh he's got two men back a deep squirrel in a deep long leg for Ian Botham his first ball and he's worked other ways off the dreaded fair and that no doubt bring her huge sigh of relief and I'm quite sure a big brain there it is Christopher a needing one for his fifty facing Mike Whitney and he's got it been a short singledom advocate so Travers patient enduring effort brings in his second 50 of the match my world it's been hard work but fiving number hits have gone down for them since he's come in and he still there writing in - Bethan that's a good shot and that's going to be both in the first for the first for England since lunch and only the second of the day and really this matches praying out there for some of the builder incident both in show that heading [Applause] the years of the fraud can be therefore any aggression for me but into Bethel oh that is up the inside edge extremely lucky going for a big shot through the covers and a very thin inside edge marsh having no chance of cutting it off with his left hand [Applause] [Music] [Applause] we dare to Terry with me now to button buttons on 21 there's the 25 just mercy give this fellow room to play outside the obstacle the Creator that picked up anything from their Headingley experience anything that gives him room outside the off stumpy just freshers drevis West Indian style hit it on the Apple he doesn't get very close to it but he hits it on the up and very very solidly indeed [Applause] the men rather is now animated they're very quiet early on sir was the battery and that come see 154 England you'll invite them goes to 2810 for a 59 that every constant has taken the second new ball from ken Palmer and walks back up to the Warwick Road in Terry alderman comes back on that comes the ball out of the cellophane and that second new ball being taken instantly by Kim Hughes [Music] [Applause] I must have been outside the office tone [Applause] when attached to Whitney to have to take these but what US steep now what a terrible moment for men playing in his first Test match it was miscued and it went so high he thought he had it [Applause] and then hesitated and have to make ground for it once again [Applause] Denis Denis the n6 that is a good hit because he was beaten for face with it and he took his eye off it and still swung about and collected it over dip squarely yeah and again it's beeping with me and wood away there a deep square no hooking down there safely into the ground but once again stressed the whole square and another bouncer here and this time Ian looks at it when he hits it right in the middle and that goes for six his second six of the over and it takes him on to 48 [Applause] just not learning at all there's taylean bowlers and Headingley they gave both and room to play his strokes here they're doing it again and he smushed them for a quick 50 60 balls it's taken him two sixes and six fours and it's delighted this capacity crowd here at Old Trafford good shot then this was very lucky there that he was on the way down with his hair there's the ball went past the token was gone ahead of tempo right now sixty-five to number six and sixty three to number three Albin into the trap the first one up to be driven down the that was just about the best chef Burkle's played today the chops the most royal of blazing hitting producing the occasional gym and in the background the crowd rises for the three-finger partnership yeah for six he plays that shot very well it doesn't bother looking at it it just swaps it away like a well as a is smashing a fly and this is another astonishing shop just watching both rooms head he's not looking he still swipes it for six dropped him I'd say that he got the hands to that [Applause] I'll sweat to her brother imagined without middle-middle enough not quite middle but it takes both aman now to in 96 and brings a look of disgust there from Bella Brighton yes certainly pitch downside the off stump there but Ian both them somehow got it down to find leg for two good runs spread him over the ropes what a magnificent what a superlative exhibition this has been oh it's awkward Rosie don't speak down the wicket to big hit Gloria shot all the way up go they arm 6 altered open and that six times is cleared the boundary in his total under nine [Applause] [Music] little bit of lift there and he's gone caught behind and the end of a truly memorable magnificent performance by Ian Botham hundred and eighteen young Mike Whitney takes his wickets it's another very simple catch in fact this time to rod Marsh but the whole of Old Trafford you can be sure will be on their feet and they're going to applaud him all the way in a reception Lee so of federal-aid deserves nothing could have been better for attacked Saturday afternoon crowd than to see an exhibition of stroke plays such as we've seen from bein boating I reckon the Australians would be more pleased to have that view of being Bothan than any they've had out on the field for the last couple of hours that's how it all happened that's Ian Botham scorecard is put together by Wendy Wimbush our scorer and it shows one or two very interesting things just to look at those strokes away on the offside which indicate just how much room the Australian bowlers were giving both them free strokes the only strokes he played on the on side but the sixes he hit from the Warwick Road end and the ones he swept away off Raymond right those are the details of what was a magnificent innings that spend the tea and of all you can see it finished at 452 and what a performance it was eventually caught marsh ball Whitney he received 102 balls in his court his century from 86 and that included five sixes and 11 fours a total of six sixes and thirty in fours in the whole of his innings and I thought it was a better knock than the marvelous innings he played at Headingley 118 in that total of two 50346 still there is Christopher a on 69 and he can't pay a few shots as well it's not gonna go to the boundary well I'm a bit of rugby passing two grand me and up [Applause] and he's gone at last Australia get christenbury out for 78 and in the end it was a simple slip catch the ball lifting very sudden event every has paid the short ball so well really unable to keep that done it was once he got behind it more or less unplayable ball fielded by dice the third man but that brings up the 300 bring them crowd enjoying this plenty of variety for them to them that's beautiful strong that you really Neverland but the advertising board in front of the pavilion has always been a great sweeper top yes and Allen sweeps on lengths not direction if the lengths right you can sweep the ball Super Shot now Israeli this is the impish novel though and like both him before he's a difficult man to bow ball two and is in this blue because he can invent Stokes [Applause] [Music] fifty-two our not and that's a real good hand for mutti [Music] the two there big applause for the 50 partnership very very useful partnership is for England exactly what was required good shot and that's four runs it's fine blow from Embree there's 233 a really good shot from what was a rather loose delivery this is a textbook back foot shot by John Embry and he hits the ball very crisply past Doug well and at cover point for four runs who has failed it very well this innings what a marvelous catch that is he'll frenzy a better one than that Johnny Dyson a way down there and third man has taken a sensational catch to get rid of Alan not almost took one yesterday to grab Ian vocals wicket that couldn't quite hang on a return today that was a great piece of feeling 356 great now the leaders ported to several two wickets in hand and not his core Dyson khalili for 59 the chat beautifully time in good position [Applause] nicely played straight by our everything lied about it rose in the right place head over the ball that's ledger they usually pushed off his Pfizer violet coming back to the third and they're in some doubt we tend to throw up so I want it in the middle of it that's it is squeeze the deliah through the slips don't think they'll worry about a second they'll be gratified enough to take the one up we'll go the bat there it is fifty runs for John n brew for the first time in attachments that's a fine shop and a person in danger there was poor Ella and what a joy to see about Spinoza's feet and a good lofted perfectly safe shot and here he comes down the wicket good at foot movement and a very good strike nearly got his partner well let's come a long way down and he couldn't gather the ball all their Australians who've done everything in the field so very brilliantly missing a very very obvious opportunity there with Brighton able to gather that returned well it's 50/50 this it wasn't a terribly good throw very difficult for a bride to take he's gotta fit the second attempt Robin Kent - good catches is taken put one yesterday and has picked up Joan Embery there to let me get 396 or 9 and he's given the leg glance before or hundred up for England [Applause] yeah huge catches it that's the end of the innings and the Australian is better immediately after lunch 505 is the lead for England Alan not 59 a good innings from John Embry 57 and Paul Allen again played like a batsman rather than a number 10 the Australian bombers took some hammer although their overall figures and all that bad they had to borrow a lot of overs alderman for the first time in his life I should think past the 50 overs in an innings mark and took 5 wickets Lily - Whitney - and ray bright one and the best situation at lunch England 231 and 404 astray - 130 and 506 needed to win I can tell you that that has never been done before most of you all know that 406 before is the best ever India to beat West Indies poor display in seventy five six 404 for three that marvellous match at Leeds in 48 and the Australians at Georgetown in the West Indies in 77 78 made 362 for seven here's the first over now it's the second ball and Bob Willis has been given the new ball he's coming in - Bob John Tyson and that's gonna go all the way for for no third man so the runs immaterial at this stage there is Kim Hughes reading about what he should have done yesterday perhaps it's very absorbed and isn't he almost as though he can't bear to look over the top of that paper [Music] [Applause] it's got to be clean the bus be run out oh dear what a disaster for Australia push forward there by John Dyson he sets off straight away and in fact has drawn up the wicked a little bit by Graham wood and is sent back very late and there wasn't a run there Gower one of the quickest people in the game at cover point and at no stage could he get back to his ground Willis again well that was not the sort of shot one would expect Kim Hughes the play at this stage of such a crucial innings it really was a rather airy-fairy sort of stroke he's got four runs for it yes Oh short by Bob Willis not a good shot by Kim Hughes he didn't really get behind the ball at all and it went over the slips for four runs because at this stage of the innings there's no third man there was a super catch by Al Anam it really was very low and he made it look so easy the ball goes down the leg side Graham wood gets himself into position to hit the ball swings at it and Allen not gets across very quickly and catches it two hands all cracking stroke [Applause] and Hughes has been notching runs very steadily in that direction he's had Gower back at third man to save the boundary after it put two away down there but no he's added a third and take miss side on to the 50 mark while with rings of close catches very few people out runs have come at a brisk great again 52 for two coming up in the 13th over well with all these runs to play with of course they can afford to do without a third man nobody back there a lot again to Hughes that's another good looking shot our folly Lakes down and put nicely through in the bucket boy but having a long chase going to give it best and successive boundaries now to the Australian skipper [Applause] and again all the time in the world to hook that away drop short and yell up nice Linda position he collects for more total burn on 265 and I look now into the twenties she was facing woods and he's prepped that to him I believe it before to got short beautiful shot surely Bob Willis you see now that this isn't really a wicked for dropping them halfway down [Music] at Short and again it's been put away by ground gallup who's really enjoying this not now he's overhauled canoes and canoes a fine stroke in his own right [Applause] and that's followed it in glorious starlit really is a cracking extra cover drive over pitched by a lot and really hammered away both on style their master time shopping days two out of it so those two runs bring up the hunger for Australia and it's coming grim out in a good time some money adrift made in over five hundred to win but they push the hundred up in just 18 hours did you quite get that well enough for three runners he's feeling there nice piece of throwing from my getting and a half-century two Grammy elephant that's a very good in English I just about give that as a chance I think it darted alarmingly off the seam and went very very quickly past Billy's right hand good piece of bowling this just left Kim Hughes gym just about carried very difficult low down to the right [Applause] go away she's giving Hughes out over W over w2 bothal and to use must have been in line with the stumps there because he was certainly playing a stroke and there's that dismissal again the left foot comes forward well there we are that's lvw to Ian Botham 119 43 and that's a fine stroke to get out on border off the mark he's patting with a broken hand a litter TL oven what a fine shot I hope that from outside the office done and yeah really has looked the part today as Paula Velvets over bedding to yell up first ever a one of the safest slipped fielders in the country not quite grasping that with his right hand and escape for Graham yet up at 89 and a reassuring pat on the back that are very disappointed debris yes a ball that moves slightly away from reality gets the outside edge and Krista very moving to his right fails to hold a catch he should have caught how often I've seen this before at a time when nothing seems to be going on and the game is quietly going on and the chances offered and how often I've seen it missed gets ready to prepare the bowl again after the drinks interval that young man behind the stumps there is his elder child Liam both him and those parents come up somewhere near his tummy as you can see he's a bit of mobile but any moment now if he gets the bat in his hand we may well see the ball flying over into the main arena both empty yellow still needing three four hundred and that could well the Edit is up to square and egg gives grant up his third first time good against England triumph ferme after what has been a disappointing tour he certainly wasn't as a certain selection for this test match and added to build a home and another splendid stroke straight back down the ground very hard indeed I'm gonna bring the other crimes ability really shows the full face back to the burglar and another one too really resounding straight drives in his over and he's done involved him Gallup trying to hit away over midwicket and that's a sad loss of concentration after reaching the hundred a lack of concentration shot in the last over against both him and Embry now his breath and true balling out up for 114 198 before six wickets to go for England today they still need 308 well done that's my evolved it looked to me as I was the curving because up moved in the air bubble at all 30 great long hot there's and Bob Willis and put away and very effective started on mass that's a tremendous yahoo nearly put his ears back and let fly for more I can't really describe that by saying that's a good shot a Wahoo I think is about the only way we can describe it but he did go along the floor and it did go for four runs there's no need to run there and order picking a spot quite delightfully their [Applause] eyes on the bouncer once again who's that in the tradition while another short one another hook another for dishing out the treatment artery short its deliveries and Bob Willis and that's for less they've got to get all four through up for more two and a border lovely crisp straight off the back foot and that brings up the fifty partnership between border and marsh and they've scored a very healthy rate and kept Australia not only in with a chance of avoiding defeat but in with a an outside chance of winning this game and making history by a mile slow wanna kept low but neither of those factors stop running Marsh bashing the way before the square leg and that's well struck by Marsh but David Gaara has put in loud he picked it up it went all the way down to deep square and God just inside the Rope he may have been unaware where the rope was I think and in fact it has gone for six but there's no doubt that it was a chance he's been given by umpire Jim Palmer caught at the wicket by Allen nod to a problem us a big shout from not and Willis and the stip fielders and the six bigot goes down for 296 210 still needed for Australia but England now need only four wickets and Allen is coming around the wicked aboard a stool with three steps and a short fourth squared shot he's played a couple of those mainly through extra cover that was we're of ordinary cover and a glorious strength and front foot right to the pitch of the ball there and the young left-handers watching that's the right apply it it's a good shot there to Marvel shots in this over from Adam brought it first one great cover drive and then that was just about the classics break up beautifully across and doesn't he give that a crack it's over pitched but respecting little madoff great power in it that will bring him to lunch so a long way to go 184 wanted four wickets left thunders goodman another diving catch down the lake side by I'm not slightly reluctant to leave down the leg side short it looks as if rave light bright it's got a glove on it if anything and Allen knocked dives down the leg side to take a good catch Lily to face his first ball [Applause] that's confident away over Pittsburgh just about half following fact and leg stump and put away very nicely by Lily just about to be pulled up they'll take three shot that's how hard they ought to be played a classic shot this this is a half-volley length pitched right up outside the off stem and he plays a fine shot for four runs I think the great Neil Harvey himself would have been proud of that and that's very well played indeed by Lily hooked along the ground in front of square for the umpteenth time in the last two days emphasizing the real docility of this pitch because he had plenty of time to play that shot yes Dennis Lillee doesn't even have to go back to play that shot he plays it almost where he is he has plenty of time to play the shot which shows the pace of the wicket at this stage so the 350 Alban know bit off so it's perfectly safe Kadam Chase Bank for David Garr I think he'll defeat the ball but they should get three [Applause] lovely shot kuhlmeier that trouble like a bullet he said certainly fine square cut something else justified the best of it look he gets right across leans into the ball gets his head over the ball and hits it very hard indeed what catch both them but a novice got supplies it was out of his reach elsewhere and he took it to hands who wasn't even a one-hand grab nothing wrong with a shop you can bet your life that early labeled at four runs to the moment of left about 373 now for eight just two wickets to go for England and a left has broken through both of us way on the left-hand side of your picture [Applause] that's good shot from border what a nice way to bring up a hundred and what a good 100 that is please let go of the bat with that left hand and I'm not surprised he's been a lot of pain all the way through there and even hundred-foot Alain Bordeaux and extraordinary innings of courage and skill with tremendous emphasis on the courage and he's gonna go ldw yes for the look all the looking a little disappointed but it looked as though it was gonna Berlin until one realize did it hit the pads and that's usually a pretty good sign that he's right in front so the 9th Australian vahik goes down at 378 I still need 128 and now it's almost over oh no he's gonna get now he could go all the way for four which would be what border doesn't want and gar allowing it to run over the rope so that's four more runs somewhat unwittingly garnered by Allen border now that's true and allit setting after it large any great haste because England are quite prepared to let it go to the boundary so another boundary afford and I'm bored and his two got one more ball of the over to try and get a single or a three from to keep the strike but that four brings up the 404 Australia and that's the performance of great character when they appear to be very demoralized Oh Anna was a chance that was a chance Alan not missing a number outside the off stamp it turned just enough kept a bit low perhaps and naughty buddy done no question about that Alan border went tentatively forward got an outside edge and Alan not has dropped his first chance of the match [Applause] yesyes it is our corner to forward short leg by Mike adding the bathroom pad Wendy unhappy to go but England have retained the ashes what is taking the final wicket and Mike Raley's triumph completed coming back to captain England at Headingley and Ian both on who has been such a big part in this match and who's wonderful innings are heading it turn the series which seemed destined certainly to go for Australia in both from showing the true sportsmanship but these ashes contests are all about him happy all these years more than 100 years shaking Ellen border by the hand because border is perhaps the real hero of this last day even though is a hero in defeat and that's exactly what Alan broad Awards a hero in defeat 123 not out a fractured third finger on his left hand he showed tremendous courage and skill and temperament there and my word not only can he be proud that in each but everyone who knows him can be proud of the fact that they witnessed that here today 28 there to Dennis Lillee played very well and what a blinder of a catch that was from Ian both and 402 and the England bowlers the heroes there for Mike Braley's team Bob Willis 3 for 96 he came in again there and picked up wickets at the end pulled out at 2 471 Ian Botham to 486 John Embry 2 for 107 Mike Gatting no wicket for 13 so the ashes go to England and the series goes to England well of the Mets wherever you look and I'm not at all concerned what's happened in the previous two Test matches to me the performance of this match which was certainly the most spectacular Test match hundred I've ever seen [Music] [Applause] and one which all of those who was privileged was here will never forget plus wickets plus catches always in the game in both them is my corn home another match we've been one figure out standing on this series which I don't think you need me to say who and in both of them we know [Applause] [Music]
