[Music] hello i'm christina with the turned leg i love to salvage repurpose and create and help others to do the same i'm also a middle school science teacher who got a crazy idea about six years ago to open an antique slash craft booth at a mall with absolutely no experience at that time there was very little information out there on how to do the whole booth thing luckily i was fortunate enough to meet some amazing dealers and now my friends at plaza antiques and collectibles in lincoln park michigan and they helped me so much on my journey so many tips and tricks they have shared with me and so now i'm paying it forward by sharing with you one of the questions that i am always asked and i think it's about time i answer it is how do you price you want to make a profit but it's not a museum you want to make sure you sell your inventory so today we're going to talk about two things one of the questions is how do i find stuff low enough prices so i can resell it and make the profit and two how do i price that one of the first things we have to talk about is where do you get your items you have to find items that are cheap enough to be able to make a profit on for you and you don't want to waste your time going all over the place looking for them no matter how much time you have so here are a few places that i like to look for items one most importantly i get the word out to friends and family i lovingly refer to everyone who helps me save old treasures as my junk army in fact i even have created a pin that i sell in my shop at shoptheturnedlag.com to celebrate all of my junk army members i think everybody knows that i'm always looking for stuff even on social media my personal page i'll put out a listing about four times a year and say hey are you cleaning out your closets keep me in mind and you know sometimes that really has helped i've gotten a lot of great items because my friends were just gonna donate them anyways so they donated to me instead so get the word out to friends and family also you can shop thrift stores and i have lots of thrift haul videos if you're looking for good thrift stores in your area if you're somewhere around metro detroit i've also gone to ohio a little but you really gotta search them because there is a huge range of prices and items and you gotta find the thrift stores that will work for you take advantage of garage sales all summer long shop as many as you can stockpile items if you need to because you're going to get the prices really cheap church rummage sales are also excellent resources and sometimes church rummage sales on the very last day will have a bag sale where the prices are just unbelievable so don't forget to look for those in your area i also like estate sales but i usually prefer the estate sales that are run by family versus companies because prices are usually cheaper although in my area there are a few companies that run estate sales that i really like because i know they have fair prices you can also go to estate sales on the last day and usually get half off which is a really good deal my favorite places to check on estate sales are the garage and the basement because usually that's where the deals are found behind me are items that i have found recently i'm going to share what i paid for them and at the end of the video i'm going to tell you what i priced them for but first let's talk about tips on how to price your items tip number one is really simple but sometimes we don't think about that and this is it's not gonna make you money sitting in your home or your basement or your garage you have to bring the item in and if you need a little help with getting your space organized i do have a video all about how to get your space whatever it might be in your home organized so you can always know what you have and what you need to bring into the booth so that you can make money on it are you enjoying this video if so make sure to give it a like and subscribe to my channel also click the bell for future notifications every time i upload a new video thanks so much for helping me to continue to grow my channel to help others to salvage repurpose and create tip number two is pricing and this is so hard especially if you are new to being an antique dealer finding your confidence in pricing can be difficult but don't fear there's a really simple rule and it is the rule of three times this is what i was initially taught by dealers but of course i was told if you can get more go for it but you don't want to price it so it's not going to sell this is one of the first pieces i want to show you guys it is a great box it is a metal box i love the designs it is missing its latch here i paid four dollars for it it has great kind of rust and patina to it inside too there's some little treasures there's some cool stuff so those can also sometimes be sold separately added bonus and i really really like this piece i'll show you the bottom there's no markings so when i was looking at this piece and this is what you need to do if you're looking at pieces and deciding hmm should i buy it is i was looking at the piece and i said four dollars okay three times four is twelve oh yeah i can get twelve dollars for this i think in fact i think this piece is even going to get me a little bit more than that so stay tuned to the end of the video i'll tell you exactly what i priced all of the pieces going along with the three times rule sometimes you find things crazy cheap like i got these candlesticks initially they wanted three dollars each for these candlesticks and that was too much for me or at least that's what i said at the time it was the end of a long day of shopping and i didn't have much money left so i was like yeah i'll leave them and then immediately the person who was selling them came over to me and said hey how about a dollar each well the rule of three times is i could definitely sell these for three dollars each but actually i think i can get a little bit more and if i sell them for a pair i can too so sometimes as long as you meet your three times rule you can get a little extra profit and that's what you want to go for this piece which is just beautiful carnival glass was 2.99 this one i got at a thrift store there is a smaller thrift store in my area where they just seem to have older stuff so i'm always checking there for good prices and also this thrift store goes to help needy in my community so it's a win-win this color carnival glass has been very popular in my area and that's something to keep in mind when you're looking this piece i had something similar not too long ago and i sold it super super quick and i think because it's fall this is kind of a smoky carnival glass it's going to go quick too once again stay tuned to the end i'll show you all the prices i want to show you another treasure this is a vintage 1920s or even maybe 1930s bride and groom look at the marcel wave it is marked japan on the bottom i got this for a dollar so three times rule i felt was fine i could definitely make three dollars probably more now this is not something i normally find so i have no clue on this tip three do your research if you don't know what the price is don't just go oh three times rule and slap the price on because you could be losing money you need to check it out and frankly the best place to do research might be if you're in an antique mall to walk around your mall or ask a friend you don't want to price items higher than everyone in the mall because you're not going to sell them and you don't want to price them lower than everyone at the mall because the other dealers are going to get angry with you you want to find a happy medium where you can also make a profit so walk them all ask other dealers sometimes they're also willing to help you you can go online and i've done that i sometimes will check etsy ebay even just a general google search but keep in mind those prices are for all over the united states and might not reflect the prices in your area they also show what people are asking and not necessarily what they sold for recently i found some tables and i was super excited because when i went online to check and do my research i found them for crazy high prices unfortunately they were not the sold prices so keep that in mind you want to make sure you're finding what you can really get for it so it doesn't just sit on your shelf and so you can sell it to make the profit this set that i'm going to show you i got all for three dollars it is marked on the bottom and i will show a picture of the mark i got it all for three dollars so i'm going to price it figure it out and put it into my booth once again 12 for all that's a good deal i love to find cookbooks and a lot of times you can find cookbooks at thrift stores in fact my thrift store has been running like a 25 cent deal which they normally didn't include cookbooks until recently so this book i got for a quarter excellent condition and brett making bread right now is big so probably this is a book you want to look into things that are trending i know these better homes and garden books there's like a blender cookbook and you know what hardly anyone's probably gonna be buying that because blender cooking isn't popular anymore but the bread cookbook is huge a lot of people are going back to baking their own breads so this might be something really interesting most of these i sell around seven to eight dollars so for me books have a huge profit margin i pick them up for a quarter i can sell them for a lot more than three times when i paid the only exception for the quarter rule with my books are books that are big cookbooks this betty crocker book i just paid 1.99 for it is an excellent condition make sure to check the pages because you know if they're cooking with a cookbook sometimes they are a mess there's food on them and everything else this one is in great shape and this book always sells for me um this good housekeeping book is also because it's a larger cookbook i paid a dollar for this this one is also a good one and will sell for me to find out what i price these at stay tuned to the end here are a few more books that i got for a quarter each um these are old school books and i have to say that these little bundles of books people love to buy um especially back to school time people will put these out for a home display and they're just a lot of fun this is the modern english also if the books have covers on them like this that are pretty sometimes i'll pay a little bit more for them obviously if they're a name of a book like treasure island or something you've heard before i do pay a little bit more um most of my books in the mall i will sell one of two ways i will either price them individually like if it's treasure island or nancy drew or something like that i will set the price and i'll research it and find out what the price is in the area usually most of my books are around five dollars each if there's something really special if they're like these books i might bundle them a lot of times i'll bundle my books by color it's called color blocking books it's very popular a lot of people are looking for books to put on their shelves just to make things look pretty and they really like to do it by color and sometimes for the seasons people change out the color of their books and their bookshelves these because they're like the back to school bundle i will put a set price on all the books and sell them that way and those bundles can range anywhere from eight to fifteen dollars in my area you want to check your area and see what the prices you can get by you are so something else i found recently at my church sale were these little tiny vintage books that come in this little box um they are super cute and i really think they're gonna sell well best of all now usually i don't buy tiny stuff okay but these were vintage and they were only 10 cents for all four so 10 cents times three oh yeah good deal pretty much if stuff's under a dollar i think it's a good purchase most of the time but with little items you have to be careful because a lot of times the tiny things like i don't know thimbles or toothpick holders you're not gonna get the profit you want the next thing we're going to talk about is what do you do if nobody really knows much about the item you found every once in a while that might be a good thing or a bad thing sometimes you just can't find it because nobody cares other times you can't find it and get any information because yeah it's really rare i am not an expert in old pie tins but i just found a whole bunch of them and i had to do some research things that tie to your area like this one michigan pie company this pie 10 i'll mark it a little higher because i think there's a market for it because it's local here's another item that i really have no idea what the price is but the price to purchase all of it was really good this entire box i got for two bucks so getting your items for a dollar or less it's probably a good deal and i knew that these old noxzema containers in the cobalt blue are collectible but that's all i knew so i knew if i could get one of these and a whole box of other stuff for two bucks i probably have a good deal but these i will need to research and i'll find out how much it is the good news is it's empty i don't know is it worth more with the label or without i'll have to figure that out in the container i also got a jar of glycerin probably i should pour this out i think make sure it's disposed of appropriately it says it's a pleasant and soothing application for chapped hands sore lips and irritated surfaces but the bottle alone i think is going to give me good profit i also have vick's vapor rub which is also the cobalt except this one has stuff in it we might need to get the vicks out of there we also have hmm this is where i worry there's like scales on the bottom so maybe like a pharmacy and we have a white powder the science teacher in me is very concerned about this and if you have a booth and you are finding treasures always kind of be careful i'm going to dispose of the powder carefully i'm going to do it outside it probably is no big deal and i will wash the container thoroughly um it just has mckenson quality since 1833 on the top so no indications about what this is be careful but it's cool green jar sometimes when i find things like that it's not even worth cleaning it out and i'll just throw them away or discard them i also have this is kind of cool alka-seltzers in the original packaging the box is in pretty good shape and the container um except the alka-seltzer are no longer tablets anymore once again probably have to remove those those are not very toxic so no big deal but kind of cool i found some vintage postcards these were a quarter each in my area they usually sell around a dollar sometimes up to two dollars i usually keep them around a dollar and i really like the colors on these postcards so that's what draws me to them i don't buy all the vintage postcards i only buy the ones i like that's another tip too because if you're going to get stuck with the items make sure you're buying things you like because you might have them for quite a while another thing to keep in mind while you're out looking for treasures is you might want to check out things that are more home good oriented if you're allowed to sell them in your mall my booth is located in plaza antiques and collectibles mall so every once in a while i will pop in some home decor items because people purchased them this one i could not pass up while i was out thrifting yeah when pigs fly he was 99 cents i know that i can definitely get three times if not a little bit more for him and he's super cute so couldn't pass them up he will look cute and i sometimes like to put items in my booth that have a little humor that when people see it'll make them laugh that kind of makes the whole experience of visiting my booth a little bit more fun too i hope you found this video helpful with pricing hopefully we've answered your questions about where do i find stuff to sell and what do i price it for if you still have questions or if you have any tips or tricks to help all the newbies out there please comment down below so we can help one another before i show you what i priced everything at i want to take a second to recap number one stuff in your home or your garage or your basement is not going to make you money you need to get organized and get it in to your booth to make the profit step two is the three times rule anytime you're finding items you want to look at the item and say hmm can i sell it for at least three times ideally four to five times that price if the answer is no you should pass on the item step number three if all else fails you can go to google and research you can just put in your item and see what you can find you can check sites like etsy ebay even just a general google search to see what you're finding the only problem is you have to keep in mind is that the price in your area across the united states price is vary greatly so make sure it is a price for your area or close by the other thing you want to consider is is it a sold at price sometimes they ask crazy prices on ebay or etsy but they sell them for a lot less or they don't sell them at all so make sure you're getting something reasonable that will sell now i'm going to share a bonus tip on pricing it's kind of silly but it's worked for me so i thought i would share it with you sometimes you might set a price for an item in your booth and it just sits and sits and it doesn't make you any money i was once told by a dealer at the antique mall honey if it ain't selling raise the price i kind of thought that was silly advice but the piece was large and it was taking up a lot of floor space in my booth so i raised the price and it sold the next week now this might not always happen but sometimes when people are looking in your booth they'll see prices and if they kind of think in their head oh it's too low sometimes they don't think it's a good deal they think oh what's wrong with it so maybe if it's not selling you should try raising the price if you do try that technique and it works let me know comment down below let's take a look at all the items i found and what i'm selling them for in my booth the first piece we're going to talk about is the box originally i said it was a metal box i found out it was a copper box i paid four dollars for this box and i later found out that it was a 1930s art deco cigar box i am going to sell it for 24.95 the pair of candlesticks i got for two dollars i am going to sell them for 12 for the set this piece of carnival glass i paid 2.99 for i'm gonna sell it for 23. remember the cake topper that i paid a dollar for it is stamped japan on the bottom i am going to sell it for twenty four dollars the dishes i paid three dollars for all of them and because they're a slightly mismatched set and the creamer and sugar don't fit on the plate i won't get as much money for them but i'm gonna ask 16 for all of them the old school books i got for a quarter each and i will sell them for three dollars each the bread cookbook i got for a quarter and i will sell it for seven dollars the betty crocker cookbook i purchased it for 199. the good housekeeping book i purchased for a dollar both will sell for 23. remember these mini books that i found for 10 cents a set i was shocked to discover that these nutshell library vintage book sets were written by the same author that wrote the eloise series and are very collectible i'll be selling each set for sixteen dollars each and that will also gain me my largest profit the pie tins i found for a quarter each i'm going to sell them for nine dollars each except for the michigan one i'm gonna ask 12.95 for that one and how can we forget the mystery box of items that i got for two dollars out of the entire box the best purchase was the noxzema container i am going to charge 14 for that and i'm going to remove the label they appear to be more collectible in my area without it the alka-seltzer container and the glycerin container can probably get me about six dollars if i remove the vicks vapor rub i probably can get about five dollars for the cobalt blue container the green container with the mystery powder though i am going to be getting rid of the postcards i found for a quarter each and i will sell them for one dollar each remember the cute little pig for 99 cents he will sell for six dollars all items shown will be heading to my booth at plaza antiques and collectibles mall in lincoln park michigan thanks so much for watching this video i hope this will help you with your antique booth now get out there to salvage repurpose and create [Music]
