Bob Uecker had similar control they last when I introduced him as mr. baseball Bob did play in the majors for about 14 years he did not have the most brilliant career he is not in the Baseball Hall of Fame he has been asked not to come near the base high but as a result of that baseball career Bob became one of the voices of the Milwaukee Brewers and this year he's also a commentator for ABC Monday night baseball would you welcome Bob Uecker [Applause] but before we talk about the baseball season I've noticed it seems to be a trend or something that's happened all guys who do sports casting on television we're strange work jackets I mean they seem to be he would heal Brunner whereas things are ungodly all of the sports casters were it's probably very nice it's probably very expensive but it is it's a I got it outside eight bucks for the whole thing sure yeah out here on Alameda SP buzz coming in operating out of an old Chevy station wagon anything out bucks for the whole thing goes back well let's talk about baseball it's now spring season is about this is underway right now we have eight of them we're underway three weeks now and we are spring training session again in Sun City Arizona which we talked about last year as a retirement community and I ran into a thing out there last year and we talked about it last year but going bars out there and there's not many how many gals hanging around you know they got dummies that they blow up and sit at the bars next year politically quiet community right I had to tell you this I got probably the social event of the spring out there this year I got arrested for drunk driving on a Honda I've never been through one of these things before I like to when I was a player of course you like to drink before a ballgame we have a Chiquita that Keys UFO yeah I've got you got you going a little bit but we had a little session out of the place in Sun City this year we're myself about four or five other ball players were going over a couple of hitters you know talking about night and yeah you get in there pretty good he started throwing the hookers down and about 11:30 at night one of the kids one of the kids that works in our Clubhouse had a a Honda motorcycle so one of our other players took it around rotor drowned out there and as I said some cities a retirement community and they don't go for that so they call the local police department out there and he brought it back and I got on it I was just going to go around a couple of blocks just take a spin on it I was in there I was having to beg I'm not done you know I was drunk when he arrested me but I didn't shave like for two days and had a fishing hat pulled down over my head my shoes were untied when he pulled me over I asked him what he stopped me for and he said for driving without a helmet and he asked me if I had been drinking and I feel I've had a couple of craned of mints after dinner he said I'm going to I'm going to give you the breath test I want you to breathe in my face so he stuck his face right up here and I give him a little ha ha and he said I want the full boat you know so I give him the full one and he told me that he thought that I'd had a few more and I don't know if you've ever been through a through a drug test it's the most degrading thing it's the first time I've ever been through one but to be put out I was in a little parking lot and of course all the old people were standing around to getting their kicks [Laughter] so he told me is going to give me the test either that or you have to do a urinalysis test and I don't want to do that in the parking lot all the older people there people looking around it embarrassing to say the reason so I'm going to put my hands behind my put my hands behind my head put your head back I don't believe anybody can do that at their straight and walk one foot after the other so I did that and didn't do real well and I'm going to put my arms out and touch my nose which I figured was a cinch for one here and one down here and then the coin test you know they dropped the coin okay sure yeah they throw some coins on the ground and this is the one that I was kind of geared up for I got all the coins when I'm down at the last one there's a there's a beer cap but it's imbedded in the asphalt and I'm trying to uh trying to get try to get it up trying to get that one out haha kind of century that got to wrap it up yeah that kind of wrapped it up I got to they dropped the they dropped the drunk driving charge because I was a you know up in Spring Training certainly doing a lot of goodwill for the other people out there some of the older folks out there and I spent they gave me a five-day deal where you had to stand on the Golf Course out there everybody drives golf carts and they plan it kind of a bumper pool with you know people get their kick I say absolutely I have something that they're there in the are declining you know a lot of fun yeah you miss playing baseball you know a lot of athletes now say that the young people who compete in athletics today it's not fair because for example pole vaulters they use now the aluminum pole when other guys had to use your bamboo ball players of that better backs and so forth so all the records is different equipment you ever make a record you might have said because of the I don't know if it's different there is the equipment is different I go along with that I can remember being a catcher and I'm sure a lot of a lot of guys that ever played baseball or a lot of form of catchers but in years gone by nowadays the catches that you see playing baseball and other with a golf glove inside the catcher's mitt to to absorb some of the shock you know from the ball that is being thrown and years ago this is a can you air catcher catcher and years ago we used to use a falsie now this is a true story of fall see that goes inside of the Miguel's long we're on already and only because of the fact that it was even non ball player yeah with that ball players but what it did it's a sponge - piece of sponge that absorbs the shock the ball that's really all it boils down to but I think when you're a kid and you know going into a store trying to you know you hang around the lines or a counter for a while you try to convince the lady behind the counter that you need a wall C for your catcher's breath there is Han it's nice you ask you to want a bra for your bad or somewhere [Music] [Applause] while years ago I think you saw like it never bothered you you know like you losing 16 to nothing in the fifth inning but the catcher sitting back there smiling and went a nice time catchers on the bench now you got your glove on you carry some the kills is serious Todd let me ask you this there's a lot of controversy about hockey being rough but baseball season three weeks old and I read here today but the trying bean balls which is trying to hit the hitter right there have been several incidents already a pitchers throwing at batteries they had an incident I think it's the first time that two pitchers have actually come out and said the reclining yeah they said to me and so he said if we could hit you I mean we can hit you if we want to happen in the ball game at st. Louis the st. Louis Cardinals playing the Mets and Linda glopping and John Matlack who pitches for the New York Mets actually got involved in them I mean in a bean ball deal where they're trying to every ball comes in with a hundred miles an hour here kind of decapitate somebody you know and it is that actual fear the batter's when I come up there knowing that the I think it doesn't rush him back a little bitter it happened to me I send my laundry out I don't want to how about when you were in the majors did they ever try to go where you weren't the greatest hitter I mean I'm not not any personal but you met yourself you did not have a great lifetime record of no I did you know what's bad about following a guy you know I played on ball clubs where you had good hitters you know the Cardinals or the Braves with Henry Aaron you're a guy that guy hits a home run and you're the next guy up you go they don't knock him down you get it and I called a lot of them when I was catching yeah I got my kicks you know watching some pitcher throw it some guys coconut yeah plus when a fight like when a fight would start first of all the stuff on go out there with the mask and well that's right you have all the hand protectors yeah I was uh I was more of a sucker punch you just walk around the circle hit guys in the back of the neck what happened but you get the gear on between my figure on that was my house my strong suit they got the only Philadelphia one there we got one of those kind of deals and it didn't work two guys grabbing two players grabbing one on each arm the other guys standing right in front of me lifting my mask up and I mean give me a shot in the chops and kind of aggravated nickels there you're on my club what was your batting average again I mean I had a lifetime at a lifetime batting average of 200 which some people would laugh at but you know there I never cared I never really did care I thought to me after the game was much more important in the game itself I've had I've had some of my best nights after a game when you go out and you go out and pounded I think anybody I think any player with ability can play I think for a guy to go out every night really punish himself I'd be back on the field and I came back the next day and you're hungover and you got bad breath and you go out for the umpires meeting and nobody wants to talk to you well you know you look at Dave Kingman now with the New York methods off to an outstanding if he had my home it 12 14 home runs well Schmidt I believe he's got 11 or 12 Kingman's got nine they're only hurting themselves I tried to stay around all maybe one two home runs a year maybe three or four runs batted in because when you get up in that category the next year they're in expect the same thing from your even and so you've played it cool so I equate to like yeah remember I go home after I think I won that three four four one time and I went home and I had a base hit in April 1 and May 1 in June how you going to talk to your old man my old man loved baseball he loved sports and when I'd have those problems you know he's the only guy could really go to I guess always talking about his dad before and early never forget and you have those problems walk up you what are you gonna do you know why don't you get a job I mean these are the things that you're even on grenadier hotel not sure you we sounded like a wonderful man oh he's great he came this country's a soccer player he blew up the balls is what he did but he was on the team he's on the food that's the main thing we'll take a break we'll be right back after this [Applause]
