hello everyone today we're going to be talking about everything blue when it comes to interior design and Home Decor there are so many creative ways to use blue in the home from whole room paint colors to micro does in artwork and accessories my goal from this video is to show you how to use blue in every single room of the home which blue hues designers and decorators favor the most and how you can shop the look if you want to inject more color into your space and try out some beautiful Blues this video is for you let's first talk about the psychology of color and why we naturally gravitate towards blue in our homes Blue is found all over nature from the gradient colors in the sky to The Moody Blues of the sea blue has a quality to instantly relax you make you feel more calm and at ease some of the adjectives used to describe blue in color therapy is Clarity pess trustworthy inspirational harmonious wisdom in the home different shades of blue can feel peace peaceful welcoming reliable and orderly you can use deep Navy for a touch of Moody glamour or even a pale robin's egg blue for some Whimsy and Delight once you understand the psychology of blue and how to use it in your home to elicit different feelings and emotions you'll have such an easier time to specify the right Shade that's perfect for your project and you can move forward with confidence and ease here are a few questions to ask yourself before embarking on Blues are you trying to capture a feeling or a sense of place if you're trying to elicit an emotion or a Feeling as you step into a room think about the emotion that you're trying to capture how do you want to feel when you're in the space do you want to feel active and Lively in the living room do you want to feel Moody and restful in the bedroom do you want to have a space in your home that's really unexpected surprising and all about that wow factor if you want to capture a sense of place do you want to be transported to the ocean during sunrise or perhaps you want your home to feel like an endless vacation off the coast of Santorini a different shade of blue can do exactly what you desire now it's up to you how far are you willing to go to incorporate the Hue into your home we're going to be diving right into all the creative ways that you can use blue in the home first and foremost with paint paint as you know is the easiest and most inexpensive way for you to transform the look and feel of an entire room I know what you're thinking painting an entire room blue is a bold statement but I want these images to show you that there is a specific Hue tint shade of blue that you can use and no matter what it is you will find one that list is the emotion that you desire let's go through these rooms from light to dark and share all of the tricks that the designers are using from tinted whites to Barely There Blues I love how these soft powdery Blues feel in the bedroom you can simply start by painting the walls of the blue shade of your choice and leaving the trim and the ceiling in a contrasting color I love how some of these designs incorporate Blue from the baseboard to the walls and the ceilings but that's something that you don't have to commit to especially if you're just kind of tinkering with the color if you want the room to feel complet completely enveloped in blue one of the designer tricks that I love to implement is actually painting the baseboard and the crown molding in the same color as the walls if you have lower ceilings in your home this actually extends the height of the ceiling because since the crown actually has a thickness and a depth to it it extends the visual height of your wall and that's one of my favorite designer tricks to use especially in a home with lower ceilings if you want to wrap the entire room in blue but you're a little apprehensive about painting the ceiling as as well think about painting the ceiling a couple of Shades lighter than the blue on your walls this will allow the room to feel completely enveloped in the color but it's not too inyour face remember that the ceiling is the fifth wall in interior design so definitely don't neglect it and never ever leave it white leaving it white often feels like a design mistake to me or something that you just didn't even think about addressing however in interior design you have a really huge opportunity to address the ceiling you could either paint it a lighter shade of blue you can paint it in a high gloss finish man to add a little bit more of a reflective Sheen to the ceiling I love that Designer trick it feels really glamorous but very approachable at the same time you could also look to your color wheel and look for complimentary or analogous colors to Blue if you're looking for some contrast you can even think about a really light shade of coral a really light shade of like a peachy orange I think that's really beautiful especially if you think about sunrise or sunset colors think about all those colors that you see in nature that are combined with all of those beautiful Blues painting an entire room blue can't take a whole lot of Courage but I'm here to tell you that there are so many little paint tricks that you can inject in your home while using paint without applying it to all the walls and the ceiling and here's how why not try just painting the doors the trim or the window frames only in this case you don't need a whole bucket of paint you can probably start with like a small little quartz size in your favorite blue and just choose one door it could be your front entry door it could be a bathroom door it could be the interior side of a bedroom door for you to inject all of this beautiful blue paint I love how some of these blue doors really amp up the Glam Factor by painting it in a really beautiful glossy blue color if you want that high design really glamorous Vibe glossy Sheen is the way to go if you want something a little bit more muted a little bit less contrasting with the walls try a really flat Sheen remember that doors and trims do take a beating so the higher the sheen the easier it is to clean if you have a matte Sheen or flat Sheen it's really easy for you to kind of paint right over it in case you get like a ding a scuff or a mark so keep those tips in mind when you're specifying Sheen levels for your paint colors I am obsessed with this entry Landing design I love how they painted the door in a contrasting Blue from the walls and the trim I love how there's a lot of Blues in the space but since there's not a whole lot of contrast between some of the shades it doesn't feel too in your face so to me this face actually feels very calming it feels very inspire ir spired and almost like I stepped into a restored Cottage in the cot Walts you always want to think about your design intent when you're specifying color for any space if you're painting the front door blue think about incorporating a really beautiful complimentary wall color you want to think about an entire composition anytime that you inject color into a space take for example this entry Landing space you'll see that the designer painted the entire double doors blue but there's not a whole lot of blue in the space they've chosen a complimentary wallpaper with a ton of yellow and not a whole lot of blue but you do see some glimpses of blue in the wallpaper which is a really great way to make your space feel more cohesive if you're having difficulty trying to lock down a particular shade always look to artwork and accessories you might find a really beautiful piece of wallpaper with just that perfect shade of blue in it and that's a blue that you can pull for a paint trick when you're applying on a front door a trim or molding what if you want to use blue in one room but you don't want the entire home to feel saturated in blue can here's a great designer's trick you can simply paint the interior side of one door blue and on the alternate side it could be the same color as the common areas in that space I love how blue Wayne scotting is used to highlight architectural details in the space once you see images of blue wne scotting blue trim blue molding you will never want to paint these details white again look how much color Soul and Spirit is in these designs I feel like there's just so much life leaping out at you and it's simply just a photograph imagine how it feels living in the space we're moving on to designers and decorators a favorite blue hues to use in the home we've got Light blues medium Blues dark Blues there really is something for everyone from this list Light blues are really beautiful in the bedroom in a powder bathroom I can also see Light blues framing doors moldings it's such a beautiful Hue that feels very peaceful and tranquil the medium shades of blue feel so inspirational and harmonious in a room I can see these Blues anchored in a living room perhaps maybe even the kitchen with your Cabinetry or even pull through artwork and accessories like an area rug if you love the dark Moody Blues like I do you can't go wrong with any of these colors even though paint is the most inexpensive way for you to transform the entire look of a room not everyone wants to move all of their furniture out just to paint the walls I get it I absolutely get it so in this case how about we bring in some of those beautiful blue in terms of furniture and bedding I love how we have a mix of different rooms here from bedrooms to living rooms you'll see all of the really inspired ways that homeowners and designers brought in these beautiful Blues into a space and just added so much life to a room we're talking about a really strategic sofa that's anchoring a living room it could be a beautiful saturated velvet sofa that's pushed up against the wall in your studio a holster is one of my favorite ways to play with color since you don't have to buy a whole lot you can start out really small small like with a throw pillow or a throw blanket even a quilt a coverlet on a beautiful beds spread or if you're really feeling the blues how about a brand new blue bed frame or headboard some of my favorite headboards are made of very Sumptuous cozy fabric think something that you kind of want to sink into and rest your head against it could be a really relaxed and natural linen weave or a cotton you may also even want to consider a pattern for the bed frame in this really beautiful blue plaid I am a maxim you know I love all that color that pattern on pattern so this plaid on pla on plaid is totally vibing with my style for some of these blue bedrooms the owners even went one step further and draped the entire bedding with blue I love this look I'm all about the more is more aesthetic and I feel as if the minute you use color you're almost unafraid to layer on more color because you've already made that first initial bold move I'm seeing Blues with oranges that I love remember that there's also a lot of Orange es that can be found in natural Woods as well some of the wood tones actually lean towards orange and if you're looking at the color wheel blue and orange are opposite of each other so they're considered complimentary colors complimentary colors really just kind of contrast and vibe off each other and almost makes the room feel so much more vibrant as a result I want you to go through these slides with me and really dissect all the details you'll see from a lot of these images and designs that blue really goes with every single other color I see it paired with cool shades I see it paired with War shades and they both give off such a different vibe don't be too attached to what each individual style is called really Clue Into how you feel about these spaces and how you want these designs to inspire your own 10 years ago blue kitchens were all the rage and I'm here to show you that they are not going anywhere it's such a Timeless color that you can pull into the heart of your home from painting all of the perimeter cabinets or perhaps even isolating it just to the island I love how this kitchen made use of all of the Blues they have all of that really beautiful bead board that's lining the back of the walls which is really ingenious because it's also used as their backsplash it really carries that verticality from the countertop all the way up to the ceilings making the kitchen appear even taller than it is you might want to even try contrasting Blues in your bottom base cabinet and a really beautiful backsplash in like greenish blue tint there's a whole lot happening in this kitchen you've got this Tazo type of countertop and cabinet door you've got the brick on the walls you got this checkerboard and the adjacent side it's a whole lot of look but because they chose such a really soft muted blue I love it I think it's such an inspired statement and not one that I would traditionally gravitate towards but sometimes when I see a picture and I'm inspired by it I try to capture that feeling and see how I can pull that color into my own home when choosing blues for your interior space and especially something that is a little bit more of a commitment like Cabinetry always choose a shade that you know you're not going to Tire of for me anything that's super saturated like a primary color like this cobalt blue is something that I know I probably will Tire of if it's a really small kitchen that's something that you can easily paint over with just a gallon of paint but let's say you have a 10x10 kitchen with base cabinets and upper Cabinetry that's a whole lot of blue so you best be sure that you love that shade before you commit to the whole shebang this is such a unique way of incorporating Blues in the kitchen without painting the entire wall I love how the blue is pulled from the kitchen into the hallway and down into another room that is what design is all about it's all about controlling what the viewer sees and how you allow you users to experience that space when using Blues in the kitchen I do have favorite combinations when it comes to lighting and Hardware I love the way brush brass looks against flat matte paint because they both lack some reflectance and Sheen you're going to get this really beautiful soft elevation as it carries your eye from wall to wall remember that it's not enough for you to just slap some paint on the walls whether or not it's your bedroom your living room or a kitchen cabinets and call it a day think about the entire composition of the room when you're design designing the space you can pull in the same Blues with your window treatments maybe a really beautiful vessel that's just sitting on the countertops you can even pull in the Hue with the color and the pattern of your flooring which takes us right into the next examples of seeing Blues in tile we're talking about tile on the bathroom walls it could be on your kitchen backsplash it could be tile floors it could even be that tile that's lining your really beautiful fireplace if you considering more of a contemporary finish I love using blue tile and really unexpected configurations you can stack the tile in a vertical orientation you could offset it with a Subway stack you can even think about laying out a herring bone or a chevron pattern if the tile already comes with a pattern to it let that be a statement in its own there's no need for you to get fancy with how the tile is laid out it's about creating that wow factor all on its own if you're laying out a backsplash and you're considering accent tile especially when it comes to a color that's as saturated as a blue I would just stay away from bit take for example this kitchen you've got this really bold statement on the wall then all of a sudden you're distracted by this contrasting accent tile that is cutting your entire blue wall in half now imagine it without the accent tile which is a more sophisticated look talk about making a statement look at this bathroom that's completely clad in fabulous Blue Marble you could tell that this bathroom cost a pretty penny but look at it it literally looks like you're showering or bathing in the o this is all about capturing that sense of place and I really love how both the designers went with this bathroom design if you want to use blue tile in the home but you're afraid of choosing the wrong tile my advice would be to specify a tile with a blue gradient in it which is why I love zelig tiles no two zelig tiles are alike they have this really beautiful wavy pattern that is on the surface of the tile that makes it look like a different color no matter how you're looking at it during the daytime it can elist at a different Hue during the night time you can get get something moodier so always think about a tile that captures the essence of the mood that you're trying to go for in that space the quickest way for you to inject a blue into your space right now is through the use of artwork and accessories my favorite designer's trick is to find a really beautiful piece of artwork you can specify abstract artwork that looks like the ocean or the sky think about how much blue you're trying to pull in to make a statement in that room and choose a piece of art that's scaled proportionately for that wall another fun way for you to add color on the walls without paint or artwork is with wallpaper I love wallpaper I use it all the time it's one of my favorite designer tricks to implement into a room to add visual impact you get texture you get Dimension and that is something that flat paint can never achieve my favorite ways to use wallpaper is to line all four walls or a statement ceiling if you have a really small space like a powder bathroom or a hallway closet or even the laundry room you don't have to use a whole lot of paper but you're going to get a really huge wow factor in a very small space you could go really bold with geometric prints and patterns you could go really muted and subdued with grass cloth you could go for fun and Whimsy with a mural or really kitchy with some retro prints if you have a fairly neutral space in the living room or the bedroom you can anchor it with a really beautiful bold blue statement rug there's so many different patterns from organic shapes to abstract you could also go for really cute little prints allout florals I also really love some of these ombre and gradient rugs where there's so many varieties of Blues woven right into the fibers of the area rug this is a really great way for you to use a spectrum of Blues in the space without feeling too in your face my team and I pulled some of our favorite Furniture home decor and accessories for you to shop the look and bring some of those beautiful Blues into your home [Music] that's it for today's video how do
