if there's one thing that recent anime has taught us it's that revenge is a fruitless Endeavor no matter how much you chase it nothing good will come out of the other end but it is damn entertaining to [Music] watch blueeye Samurai takes us back to the 1600s with a star studied voice cast and writers from Blade Runner 2049 and it's a Revenge story about racism oppression and with none other than a strong female lead and before I even get to how I feel about the anime what is wrong with Netflix's marketing team like first it was Pluto barely being talked about and now blueeye Samurai even with the insane production team behind it there was no talk about it just hire me at this point like I'm already doing it for free oh sh I'm doing it for free but back to the show it had some amazing visuals as expected and there was great character development the main character Mizu had every right to be The Annoying angry person that she was aemi made her mistakes but she actually Dove down in ranks to understand what the average problems were it tackles adult themes as well which I love to see in anime in general but even with all of this praise and the fact that I can objectively say it's a good anime I hate to admit that I didn't like it he hates woman Bo this man I know how many times that might be throwing at me but to put it simple any and all issues I had with the show have nothing to do with the character's gender to put it simple I didn't like the writing and I believe the further it got the more it started to lose its plot and I need to preface this with the fact that I really really wanted to like this anime I actually watched it when it first came out I randomly found it and saw no other comments about it I could have made a great video about finding a Hidden Gem yet again on Netflix and I also hate to bash animation in general because I know the work that gets put into it and most of the time it isn't even worth it and then above all so many people actually love this so I couldn't tell if I was being a contrarian or maybe I am a woman hater I'm not I swear I'm not I I love them I love I love you but seriously as someone who watches things for the plot I just couldn't enjoy it it started off so grounded in a reality that I could even relate to be it centuries apart as someone with an ethnic background but born in America I appreciate seeing stories about diversity from one side I know what it's like for my parents the British just take everything and then my own experience when both sides you are on have their own issues now Mizu has this but to the extreme she gets assaulted from her literal childhood because of her looks and her own country is suffering from the same thing that makes her this so-called monster the most evil being in existence the white man I'm getting cancelled for this video oh my god I didn't even make it yet I'm going to I can't it's a story about not fitting in which I'm sure a lot of people can relate to regardless of race or gender I mean I know logic would love this story but again no matter how good it looked or the plot that it was based on I couldn't just ignore the writing as time went on there were hints of great storytelling and development but we genuinely started to lose the plot we went from this grounded setting of an Ido period and opium and weapons trade in a time with swords to these mofos dodging bullets and then I get the classic defense oh it's just an anime to some of you those words just stabbed you in the heart and to others you thought it was true which leads me to my next point of who exactly is watching this my expectations is most people who pick this up won't be an anime fan but rather people who might have seen Arcane and been on the search for something similar s it's very accessible as an anime it has a Hollywood cast and creators so if you are one of those people I'm not going to argue against you maybe you have a level of suspension of belief when it comes to anime but to me as someone who fits in as both both an anime fan and a movie fan anime is not just a tool to make things unrealistic yes it is unrealistic at times and trust me I'm aware it's an animation at the end of the day but the point is when there's a grounded setting in an established world the characters do not stray from it and the logic stays in that grounded setting or if they do stray away then it's simply not good writing apparently Mizu is female guts annihilates fullon armies and oh guess what her training was shadowing people outside the the swordsmith's place who the [ __ ] was she shadowing mamoto Masashi or here where she's wounded near death and manages to catch this Cliff while holding on to a full grown man with one hand Mufasa you got no excuses oh and then they fall into a river that's uh actually Frozen but of course they survive because why not this man who called in an arrow strike just survived completely unscathed but I guess the arrow Shooters just have Aimbot Gabby's not the only one with attacks will never oh my God and then it just progressively gets less and less realistic while trying to tell a story about classic Ido Japan bro blocked a bullet with a hammer he has no hands I can't ignore this and maybe non-anime fans can look at anime to be unrealistic but I can't because even the most Fantastical anime where there can be powers or Titan Shifters there's a level of logistics when it comes to suspense of belief there's a power that can explain what happened or if the story is trying to base itself on a form of reality then it will continue to do so yes there's plot armor and there's mistakes but even that goes up to a certain point and if anything it's mostly an older anime which we're starting to see less of in newer ones and usually I wouldn't have this big of a problem with it but there's been some insane comparisons already through a quick search I found Game of Thrones comparisons claims for it to be the best animation of the year and an overall IMDb score that ranks it above plenty of anime I get it its visuals are great and it's well produced but there's so much more to a show than just that to be honest the work overall almost felt unoriginal and I don't mind when things take inspiration from other works that's pretty common but the whole time it felt really inspired as if someone watched Mulan and then decided to play Ghost of tsushima and then combine the two adding on to the unrealism it felt like someone who just liked the appeal of anime and Japanese culture and tried to make it a atic with some decent writing again it's not a bad show I couldn't objectively say that but a lot of things felt off and it almost felt like a fanfiction at times I mean for one how did this dude go from the lengths of wanting to kill Mizu as revenge for embarrassing him in front of his entire dojo and costing him his Royal marriage to straight up almost dying for her through secrecy like I know we love enemies to love her tropes but at least build it up to make sense and yeah I know they went through stuff together but his shift towards makes no sense to me oh I I I I'm I'm I'm sorry hey you're he's gay I'm not gay and then one of the biggest plot points is where Mizu doesn't stop soldiers from taking aemi back to her royal family and they paint Mizu as the bad guy for this keep in mind she just fought an entire Army and you expect her to stop these Royal soldiers from taking her back from a Warfield to a Palace let alone the fact that she was trying to kill her a couple of minutes ago and at first you could argue that the characters were in the wrong but not Mizu until the show uses this as a moment of guilt in her future as if she was in the wrong I mean what did you expect her to do she was literally about to die hey y'all come look at [Music] this get him Master you just stood there he is not my friend now even though I had a lot of issues the story isn't all bad I think the writing specifically of female characters were great hm's journey through the levels of feudal Japan was nice to see she was a spoiled brat and she knew it but by pushing herself to experience what the average woman at the time had to she gained an understanding of them and also how to finally take power for herself and stopped letting others control her Mizu also had her powerful moments aside from physically dominating any fight somehow she started with a simple point of revenge against white men to stopping the trade of opium and guns which was toxic to all citizens of Japan I could get behind that and even more the voice actors killed it my es green and Kenneth BR EG were unrecognizable Brenda Song and Randall Park were recognizable especially Randle Park I can guarantee your life within a blades length of aija foul 's neck our business but they still did their things and delivered as V so all together I'm not going to say it's a bad anime or bad animation because it's not objectively it's pretty good mostly in the visual department but personally I did not like it I value plot as much as I value visuals and I also can think of plenty of examples where both are done to a very high level I mean on Netflix itself there are a lot cyber Punk Edge Runners arcane devil man crybaby and Pluto so I couldn't say that this is anywhere near my favorite animations of the year but it's good and if you enjoy it I'm not going to tell you otherwise but I would tell you that Arcane offers the same things but does it better and Pluto is a recent Netflix anime that checks all my boxes both in plot and visuals there's also plenty of shows to come out in recent time that I would say is a must watch in comparison to bees and specifically if you want a great female lead there's none other than free run right now in my opinion that's doing it better and it's also a reason I felt so passionate about this because I see so much praise for BS and then I go to a show like freerun which is so much better but of course in America it's not going to get the same coverage and I understand that everyone isn't an anime fan and they find works like BS which is easier to get into but trust me if you could get over that slight cultural hurdle you will not regret it and if there's anything to take away from this video I want you guys to know that I do not hate woman I hate [Music] everyone
