I love hearthstone in concept in fact in an effort to make my channel less of a big old winch I wrote down a list of things that I actually liked that I wanted to talk about so that I couldn't go ahead and make positive videos for a change that'd be nice on that list along with obscure Doctor Who flash animations from 2003 that nobody's seen was the relatively new half stone battlegrounds a new entirely free-to-play game mode added to hearthstone by Blizzard to be enjoyed by all three people still playing the game if you're not one of those three people I should probably tell you that 1/2 stone is Blizzard Entertainment's trading card game set in the Warcraft universe it many of blizzards games are criticized for being paid to win but really Blizzard Entertainment have just taken the next logical step in marketing and business things instead of making games that someone can just buy and then play Blizzard have come up with a revolutionary new system in which they give away the actual game for free but then replaced the gameplay with a screen that just says [ __ ] you give us money that's not fair of course Blizzard didn't actually come up with out themselves into hearthstone battlegrounds a genuine breath of fresh air unlike the main game where you have to buy tons of packs so that you can get the cards you need to build the best decks to actually play the game competitively the only thing you need to play hearthstone battlegrounds competitively is to be good at the game imagine that here's how it works you don't need to bring tech with you or anything like that just hit play and you'll be offered a choice between four of the 34 total heroes in the game each one has a unique ability which if you use it right will grant you an advantage as you play unfortunately there is a bit of a power imbalance between some of the heroes some of them are a lot better than some of the others but since you get offered a choice between four of them every game you have to get really unlucky to be stuck with one that's actually bad well yeah obviously it can happen but the chances of it are relatively low he's the he's the lowest winrate hero in the game and that's the whole joke once you've picked your hero you'll do battle with seven other players each turn you'll be offered minions to recruit and you can spend gold either to recruit some of those minions or to upgrade the minions you'll get in the future once you're done recruiting you'll enter a combat phase where you pitch your minions against the minions that another player has and whoever wins will deal damage to the loser once you lose all your health you're out and the last player standing wins after several terms of recruiting than doing combat than recruiting than doing combat you can get some pretty crazy builds going and one thing that I do really love about it and stand squarely in the face of a lot of what Blizzard Entertainment gets criticized for is that every player starts out on an equal footing it's free to play and you can unlock all the features of the game mode just by passively playing the game you don't have to do anything that you wouldn't be doing anyway to unlock everything so recently there was a patch finally Blizzard has added the one feature that every player has been asking for microtransactions hooray woohoo but you'd presume that with the addition of microtransactions comes something for the players to buy you know to add something to the game and then put a real-life price tag on it you need to add something to the game right well no actually what Blizzard has done has taken the content from the game that every player used to unlock passively just by playing and is now hiding it behind a paywall you know how I told you that you get offered a choice between four different heroes every game but suspiciously had to borrow footage of that happening from someone else's stream well it's time to introduce the revolutionary new give us money or start every game with a severe disadvantage [Music] haha you've been tricked what I told he was a joke is actually the main plot twist of the video I actually ended up picking the lowest winner in hero in the game because I still felt it was the best of the two options I was being offered and the other two are stuck behind big obnoxious padlocks you have to pay to make go away this system is called the tavern pass or Perks yes right starting the game without a disadvantage is a perk [Music] for a while the only way to get the tavern pass was to pay the 80 euro or whatever it cost in whatever country you're in to preorder for when the new expansion comes out 90 of the new card packs and a JPEG so what I'm sorry it moves it's a it's a gift now that that expansion is out Blizzard have generously given you the ability to still give them money anyway because now you can buy the tavern pass separately on its own that's so nice of them but obviously once you have the tavern pass the disadvantage will be gone and that's how that works you know you pay money for the product and then you have the product for four months then it expires and you have to buy it again if this was a normal game I would absolutely love to just buy it and play it like her like we used to do you know but this [ __ ] is [ __ ] parasitic and the fact that they're trying to sell me these as perks just grinds the [ __ ] out of my gears hey here's some free soup although if you'd like that in a bowl rather than just poured haphazardly over the table that perk will cost you a little bit extra I'm afraid but don't worry you can buy the tavern pass with in-game currency for just 2500 gold you can get a tavern pass without spending a cent of real money what Joey man that's so great you only have to win 750 games of battlegrounds together assuming a win rate of 50% which you know you had you have a disadvantage now and games that last half an hour each which is very reasonable for the battlegrounds that should only take you literally 750 hours of solid play plus you can get gold even quicker for finishing the daily quests by playing the main game which is also famously pay to win but if your desire to do well in the battlegrounds does coerce you into playing their other game modes you'll be able to unlock those perks after completing about a month and a half's worth of daily quests but hey that's now a month and a half of gold you've not spent on the rest of the game that's 2500 gold you've now not spent buying packs and since you can only earn so much gold no there's there's literally a limit on how much gold you can earn it's a hundred gold per day plus the rewards for daily quests you're now twenty-five packs behind on the newest expansion but hey there's a way to fix that now I mentioned that the amount of gold that a player can earn has a limit built into the game but to actually hit that limb you have to win 30 games a day which is far more than most people practically have the time for so let's think about this for a second by giving you more things to spend your gold on but not giving you more ways to earn gold which they haven't by the way they're spreading the small amount of in-game currency that the player actually does have even thinner across even more things that they already couldn't afford all of without paying real money so if you're a free to play player and you want to play the single player Adventures of which they release three a year which by the way you're going to need to do if you want to build the best X in the game because they give exclusive cards as rewards for players that finish them and you aren't enough of the new card packs every time they release a new expansion to be able to keep up with the rapidly changing meta game and you want to not be [ __ ] up the ass when you play battlegrounds you have absolutely no chance without spending a significant amount of real money and when I say significant I mean significantly more than like actual games cost and you're going to have to do that repeatedly indefinitely every time they release more content that you need to be able to play competitively I mean I already mentioned that to pre-order ninety card packs of a new expansion when it comes out costs eighty euros and with that oh boy you sure well unlock some of the cards in that expansion if you're luckier than average you might even get five of the 25 legendary cards from the set what a worthwhile purchase that'll probably keep you ticking over until they release the next expansion at which point you'll be out of date again now I get it Blizzard isn't a charity and I don't expect to be given everything for free but if a new restaurant opened up across town where the food was freed that you had to pay a fiver every 30 seconds to stop the waiters from pissing on you you probably wouldn't go there talking of new expansions the latest one is called ashes of outland and introduced a new playable class for the first time in the game's history amazing as well as being a really welcome and fun addition to the game it'll also be a really great excuse to print even more cards especially Legendary's every set and will dilute the probability of you getting cards for the other classes meaning you have to buy more packs to get the cards that you were going to get before and will need to buy even more packs to get all the cards in the set every time a new expansion comes out but it is also genuinely a fun addition to the game in fact when it was first released it had a nearly 70 percent fun rate I'm sorry I mean win rate it had a nearly 73% win rate what the [ __ ] the new class is called demon hunter and yes according to some sources it was possible to build decks for demon hunter that had a win rate of up to 73 percent the highest I've seen proof of is sixty nine point five percent which isn't any less ridiculous no I guess it's I guess it's three point five percent less ridiculous I do understand that balance patches have come out since that doesn't mean that it's okay for the new class to be so fundamentally broken on release day why bother doing balance testing before you release the expansion if you're going to release it this unbalanced in fact demon hunter as a class was so fundamentally broken so overpowered that before they had time to get a patch out Blizzard felt the need to release emergency server-side nerfs to demon hunter this meant that when you queued into a game playing demon hunter your client your app would tell you that the cards do one thing but then when you actually played them in a game the game would disagree and tell you they'd done something else here's a card called I beam the costs 0 mana if it's the left most or rightmost card in your hand or rather that's what it says on the [ __ ] card except it is the leftmost card in my hand and it costs one demon hunter was so fundamentally broken that Blizzard decided it would be better to have cards in the game that literally didn't do the thing they said on them that it would be to keep a demon hunter in its current state for a couple more days until they can get a balance patch out clearly they didn't intend for the new expansion to be this overpowered or they wouldn't have done that you don't roll out emergency fixes if everything is going to plan but releasing expansions overpowered and then nerfing them afterwards is standard practice for Blizzard these days and that's fine for players who understand that that's how it works and that's what's going to happen but I'm sure that Blizzard isn't losing any sleep over the players that don't understand this pre-order the expansion and then when the expansion is released it's made worse than the thing they were told they were going to get the thing that made them decide to part with 80 euros of their real human money or let's take this back to the recent patch made to the battlegrounds which along with implementing the very important feature that makes dead players shoot to first place with some Rison implemented the tavern pass I'm sure that Blizzard aren't losing any sleep over players that don't read the fine print and don't realize that paying 20 euros is only gonna get them four months of the waiters not pissing on them I like hearthstone but man [ __ ] Blizzard hello this is after the video Jay saying first of all patreon credits we'll be back next week they're gone because I'm in coronavirus lockdown and I'm gonna be working to get them back properly secondly I've started a new channel it's called where me and a few other creators you might know just [ __ ] around doing weird [ __ ] so check that out if it appeals to you but other than that I hope you've enjoyed a goodbye
