morning these are my local woods and they are pretty alive with bird songs about half past six in the morning now like i suspect a lot of people bird song is my achilles heel when it comes to id birds um you know the way i learn my way around birds was as a kid having the observer of hooker birds and then an increasingly uh big collection of field guides and be able to go out and see things and then i'd eat them by seeing them i just never really learned about bird song and how tidy birds by song but i am going to try and fix that this spring and i'm going to start by trying to record some birds out here uh just my local birds i suspect it's all the common stuff that would no fine if i saw it uh and one of the advantages of working with rspb is i will then be able to ask a grown-up so i'm going to get some of my pals at rspb to help me id those birds uh i try and work my way up from there uh you never know maybe some of you will find it useful as well but let's get started so the thing about using the mic is it's pretty weird and that what previously just sounded like generally the noise of the dawn chorus which is something i'm quite used to just that general nice nice to listen to kind of turns into much more individual songs uh still don't have a clue what they are i can at least begin to pick them out so we'll see what else we got around here right i reckon i've got a few things um one kind of thing and forgive me i'm gonna i'm gonna explain this the best i can something kind of tumbly uh something apologies to the bird involved here monotonous and a couple of things that i would identify um as birds singing by which i mean uh like just absolutely getting it loudly like gorgeous [Music] okay i will take them back home try and isolate the bird songs send them off to a grown-up who's going to try and help me and we'll see what we've got i see so that's the that's the rather familiar song of the chaffinch and uh it does sound like it's tumbling it really does it sounds like to me the way i learnt to remember it is that it sounds like the bird is falling down a flight of stairs so yeah that that is the song of the challenge a very nice one at that so this uh this rather monotonous noise um as you put it is um actually the core of the chat um so this isn't a song this is a this is a contact call that the bird is making and uh to my ears um this sounds like it's saying pink pink pink pink and uh they're cool all day um pink pink aha so this one's a black bird um to me it sounds really really calming really relaxing musical very musical um it's almost that one really is singing a song um and it's it's just absolutely beautiful the song of the male blackbird right so this one to me um sounds it's very high pitched um is is very sweet it's almost a little bit melancholy and this is the song of the robin so you'll hear this right at the start of the day and right at the end of the day as well it's absolutely beautiful um is one that is one you'll hear a lot as well um and funnily enough robin's um you'll also hear them singing in the winter it's a slightly different song um when they're defending winter territories but this is very much the uh the breeding the breeding song of the robin well pretty interesting and thanks to luke for doing that i've definitely learned something and its goal for me will be maybe go a little bit further afield further out into my patch maybe see if i can find any of the birds that are turning up migrants are turning up for spring see how we get on but anyway very much a start you
