gables in waco texas and and i got to start hanging out there when i was just a little shaver and i'd look out across the floor and spit tunes and all that stuff and i got started writing this song when i was about eight years old it wound up being the title of an album of songs that wayne jenner's recording of mine is called honky tonk heroes [Music] hello round even song [Music] i just believe [Music] memory [Music] why was it always turning out to be me oh where does it go the good lord don't know it seemed like it was just any other day i found that green [Music] there's holes now girls walks down there she was my number one she said billy i'm busy why don't you come around back up [Music] that's what she said last night that's what she said last night we gonna fast i had my other girlfriend staying at my house when i got home two days late she had to chuck me out i went and bought a risk grew in a watch to my times up with her she said to billy i love her and she began to her what she said last night that's what she said last night what you said i got a brand new cell phone 18. it was a little bitty time just right for a country boy like me my girlfriend took a poker to fight and then she threw it away she said to philly i don't know you're just attached to that thing but it's too small for me that's what she said last the night thing too small for me that's what she said last night i'll tell you what next time i get one of them cell phones it's gonna be a a big old good and i'm talking about that vibration glows in the dark i'm telling these women nowadays you just can't seem to please them they want it bigger and better and bigger and better and someone like the black model better and better cowboy all right i've gotten a little shooting practice down there in waco texas here a while back and uh outside of waco and uh as a filler actually uh we had the argument inside and then we went outside and uh and the fellow he shot at me three times it ain't in the deal couldn't find a gun and uh anyhow he shot at me three times and i finally had to return fire i had my little bitty piece here of a gun it's a 22 little derringer i never had uh never had fired it and i just come up wasn't thinking or nothing i just come up and hit him right between the mother and the you know right and uh he still got the bullet in his mouth i don't know why but anyway that's that's the way that really happened and another fellow wrote a wrote a song about it and he wrote it way before he turned myself in and he said uh where you want it and the thing is that i didn't say that but when i got to turn myself into prosecution people said you said where you want it i said no that putting the penitentiary over there and anyway here's here's a song i wrote to uh straighten things out it's called wacko from wakeboard [Music] ain't no doubt about it i shot a manner in the mouth but can't talk much about it he wasn't trying to tissue me but it took too long anybody in my place put it on the sign i don't start class i finished fast that's the way i'll always paint i'm a white old boy cool you best not mess with me [Music] i was bound to get killed nor jamel said philly houston's where you need to be if you're going back away from you're leaving without me it's nice to be important more important to be nice if you're shooting dice and [Music] i said of course i can't just point it out and i'm getting right to it horse can of texas has been real good to me they knew i had to shoot that man before that man shot me i should have known the truth one time it sets me free i guess living down and wiggle maybe out of me all right here's what a nelson park [Music] you finally heard the truth [Applause] he's up there kid we uh we uh uh we tuned up every once in a while just to prove we're country and then uh got jason mckenzie back here on the drums and then uh jeremy went on a guitar and a big stick of dynamite right here in front of me explode [Applause] the devil made me do it the first time the second time i've done it on my own i yeah the devil made me do it the first time the second time i've done it on my own lord put a hammer on this simple heavy man and believe that when the devil made you need to make a new food every day [Laughter] oh [Applause] want to help me out when i was down at the end of my rope is i'm just an old child of cold i'm just everybody oh [Music] we'll search him through the wall will be yours oh [Music] [Music] oh yeah [Applause] all right back in the 60s we're in the middle of 66 or so the wife and i uh moved up to nashville because i wrote songs since i was eight years old and i knew i was really good as a matter of fact i i actually thought i was the best there ever [Applause] that's was enough for me though you know and close to wife she didn't she didn't think that at all as a matter of fact behind every great man is a woman saying you can't be that just made me want to do it more you know anyhow i was over just we rented a place outside of nashville about 30 miles out and we couldn't afford to rent nashville it's just too damn high and so it was out there in the country county there's an old country store right across from where we lived and i walked over it's where they sell great pets and stuff like that you know had the cracker barrels and things and i walked over and there's this guy standing there and he's kind of thinking out loud i guess he's looking at this old truck when him will crank up trucks and bust your thumb if you don't watch it well it won't it belonged to the man there at the store and he was thinking out loud he said you know i'd buy that their truck if that fella fix it you know so i just kind of thought i overheard him or he heard him thinking one i don't know what but the gerbil jumped back on their little wheel and started collecting and i i said you know i'm going to be a businessman and i we didn't have much money because i'm going to buy this here truck from him and from the guy at the store and sell it this fella down the road it wants it so bad so i've got i bought the truck with what little money we had and i'm out there underneath the truck shed tree working on it i've been busting my knuckles and i'm pretty good mechanic and i've been busting my nose and everything and i'm just i can't get the damn thing to run and the wife comes out she said what you doing i said oh my face is going to sell this here truck just follow her down the road here she said does that mean you bought it and of course when i told her that all hell broke losing she mattered no wet hands she jumped in the only car that run and went back to waco texas and uh i'm out there i never did like being married no really i've done married her three times [Music] of course that that made her the dumbass not me [Applause] anyhow i decided you know marriage is a great institution but who wants to live in an institute oh we got one guy's gonna get in trouble tonight you're cut off all right here we go this here what happened was i decided after all that thinking that i i hated being married i decided well i'm just gonna end it all and i want to give you a tip don't ever play russian roulette with an automatic that's not a kind of good story but at least for your good health i go up to the house there and i got on the bed i laid on the bed with my hat scrunched on my head and my boots on everything you're supposed to do when you fix it do stuff like this and i i got the gun right up to my head and i almost done it but i realized you know i had all my favorite clothes which would be these and uh not this pair but just like them you know and uh i come right over the top of my head and i just went and blowed a bunch of holes in the wall to keep them having to do it again and i i i had to do some explaining about that later but anyway i got down there to that truck and i squared off that silver and i finally got to running and i was oh man i've got it running i limped into nashville and this is during the hippie days you know there was some long-haired guys going around i noticed says all going around saying you got to change i said well you know i'm a cowboy but i can do that so i took my hat i said hey y'all y'all got to change heavy and i what long i've done fill my hat up three or four times i had no idea those guys were making that much money anyway there's one guy coming by and he's agreeing like a possibility and i said i said hey what is it make sense of being happy about it he said what about something here might help you okay i had a bunch of money and he got come out with this this little sheet of paper it had looked like little stamps on it and this his fellow feathers walking like this with the police in his hand he called him natural man and i said well i'll just take that whole sheet i said all right now i paid him a bunch of money for that whole city and i just watered it up put my mouth and swallowed it over there and had a bit of my hand he said you ain't spoke he don't want i said well now you tell me but anyway it wasn't about 45 minutes or an hour and i was walking sideways i'm telling you everything went goofy and there's all kind of colors and lights the sun wasn't cooperating nothing was going right and i was go i went into this store somehow i managed to get crawl in there or something and i bought a six pack of beer i figured well if i'm gonna die i'm gonna die with a beer in my hand and i got out there and i sat down on the dead come see me and i started drinking that beer and i got about three four into it and i about the fifth beer i got drunk and i could handle that you see i've been there before so so i handled that and i got up and i said well you know the wife's gone she's gone to waco and and i'm here and i i'm gonna have myself a good time so i started to i started drinking all kinds of liqueurs and stuff like that and just different things and and started hitting these women i mean those squatty bodies long tall blonde brunettes i mean i did everything but farm animals i'm telling you i had a good time then after several days i'm sure i said well i'm going to go back to the house and i'll limp back to the house in old truck i got there and i'm in there and i took a shower and you know cowboys when they got the together they put a hat on a lid on it and anyway there i am i put my boots on and my hat i can't remember why i didn't put nothing else on i just got my guitar started started saying this about what had happened to me and it was a good song man i said oh my god this great song i've heard and uh about that time dorm robin moved and the wife comes in she said what the hell are you doing now and i didn't know how long she'd been gone i didn't know how long i'd been going and i said honey i just wrote the greatest song ever written i'm telling you we're going to buy nashville she said i've got to hear that i got to hear it and i i don't know what she had in her purse but she must have had a handle or something because she hit me with that dang purse and i went down hard and seeing stars and i heard the car cranking up and she left because she'd only heard about a third of it she done gone and uh here's a song i'm thinking about cranking my ragged old truck up calling myself into town early this morning without any warning it took me a look at myself good god i seen how that married up life i'd been living it wasn't trying to choke me to death [Music] i lay home with it [Music] [Music] myself in the town i'm thinking about raising to take on the much of hell till i die for a living a ragged head old trigger and hauling myself oh irresistible a honky tonk man in a haunted top band with a haunted girl on my own maybe as ugly as no mother offense but i'm loaded with hillbilly chum that's right that's my life and no why i might want to tell me i can't go and have me some fun so before that old heaven drives it back in from waco you can myself in the town [Music] [Music] myself into town if you get the urge to sing along with me uh don't because it me [Music] wow just to reach the other side and i'm gonna drown myself in freedom just to feed my foolish prize on my journey through the darkness i have finally seen the light and i know no one's ever loved me like you're loving me tonight there's something you must tell me [Music] in the arms of other men i would never try to judge you we have both been wrong and right but i know no one's ever loved you [Music] like i'm loving you tonight god will save his fallen angels and a broken wings human when it draws their hearts together and they learn to love again [Music] all their sins have been forgiven in the twinkling angels [Music] [Music] so [Music] there's a story in the bible [Music] [Music] out across the open sky we [Music] [Music] coming home hello thank you [Applause] thank you very much folks uh i don't know how many of y'all remember my son eddie shaver he played guitar and we had a group named shaver and uh all these boys uh all these guys know know daddy real good and uh i miss him but he he fell in with some bad companions on new year's eve 2000 and wound up in a motel room there in waco texas dead from a heroin overdose and uh it's been rough getting along without him but he's in a better spot and the thing about it is is uh that you have to be tough when these people are like that and i'm trying to share something with you when uh when you have friends or family like that and they're into that hard drugs the thing to do is you got to be tough it's hard to do i know it is and the thing about it is you gotta you gotta say no when they come up and they want some money or something take them down get them something to eat and if they can't uh if i can't keep it down don't give them no money but if they can keep it down that's good the thing is you got to be tough and not give them money to go out and buy this stuff with because that's exactly what they're going to do they come up with some other craziest stories to get it but you just got to be tough and figure it out you don't look like one well i didn't want no money i don't know what to tell you about you where are you coming well i'm so happy for you [Music] anyway like i said the message is you got to be tough and this here's a song that i wrote hoping it will help you in some way [Applause] you'll have to do the best you can good friend of mine someday our paths may cross again in a better time i know you know you know you know that i pulled the thorn out of your side when i walked away i took the rock out of your shoe on that very day i pray you'll forgive me for not leaving sinner you are the star in my heart will never blink to think almost how long too long to help you you are the star in my heart i guess you've always known though we are many worlds apart i'm still your friend and friends will always be friends forever you are the star in my heart love you folks i love you [Music] um i'm gonna live forever i'm gonna cross that river i'm gonna catch tomorrow now you're grown won't hold me just like i always told you you're gonna miss me when i'm gone nobody here will ever find me but i will always be around just like the songs i'll leave behind me i'm gonna live forever now [Music] [Music] you fathers and your mothers be good to one another please try to raise your children right don't let the darkness take them don't make them feel forsaken just lead them safely to the light when this old world has blown us under and all the stars fall from the sky [Music] [Music] i'm gonna cross that river i'm gonna catch tomorrow night i'm gonna live forever i'm gonna cut across that river i'm gonna catch them all now [Music] [Music] i'm gonna live forever i'm gonna cross that river i'm gonna catch them all around [Applause] [Music] [Applause] so thank you very much you're gonna do one here with
