he's got the whole wide world in his hands he's got the whole he's got the Sun and the moon in his hands he's got the wind the rain in his hands he's got the big round world in his hands he's got [Music] he's got the whole world in [Music] [Applause] one of the great blessings that God gave me was a wonderful family the family that I came from in the hills of and on a farm in North Carolina my mother and father were dedicated Christians I have two sisters who love the Lord one of my sisters married an evangelist that most of you heard of Leighton Ford and I have one brother he came along six years after I did and God called him to stay at home and to work and I don't know any man that has worked any harder and I don't know any man that's more dedicated to Christ and I don't know any man that I love and respect any more than I do my brother Melvin he's never been to Southern California before and he turned to Loren present the mayor of Santa Ana on the platform a moment ago and he said is this weather always this way he said I've never seen such beautiful weather and of course mr. grisay being a loyal Southern Californian said it's always this way most of the time but I want my brother Melvin to come for the first time on the platform of any of our Crusades and tell you whatever he wants to say and to tell you what Christ means to him let's give him a welcome to Southern California [Applause] thank you printer you know I feel a little bit like Fela must have felt some time ago and it's an old old one that I expect most of you have heard in fact I think billions have one that told it to me but it fits me so well I think I must tell it I heard about nine years ago they were up over in the Carolina mountains taking a census of all the people and the census taker thought he was through and when he stopped at the bottom of the mountain to get some gas somebody said did you get that one little cabin way up on the hill and he looked up there and he could barely see it and he said no I believe I missed that one and he said well you better go up there there may be somebody there so he couldn't drive all the way but he walked the last mile and a half and sure enough his little boy out in the yard and he was out there had some sticks tied together sweeping the yard and the census taker said boy said where's your mom and daddy and he said they're not him he says well where are they he says well says my daddy was hung last year and said well where's your mother she's an insane asylum Wade you got any sisters yes I got two where are they well one of them seen a woman's president where's Ella she's at detention home for girls well how about your brothers you got any yes I got three well my oldest brother sheriff shot and killed where's your brother well he's on chain gang well I'm Fred to ask this question before your third brother oh he up at Harvard University he said Harvard University what in the world is studying he study nothing they studying him [Applause] so that's a little bit the way I feel coming up here with Belen with all these people I don't know what to think and I know they don't know what to think of me but I didn't come here to tell a joke I was asked to come and give my personal testimony or a bit of it and I would say up until the last few years or even the last few months I would never get up before a crowd like this I can assure you and I know cliff and Billie and TW Wilson and the others can verify that fact I would never stand up before people and try to talk and I guess maybe the beginning of it was because I did have a brother that had traveled the world over and had spoken to a lot of people he's well known and I'm sure that God has had his hand upon him but somewhere along the way it did look something to me and it kind of made me feel kind of squashed now I expect we've got some people here tonight that something along life's way has made them feel a little bit pressed down and when somebody would ask me to even teach a Sunday School class or give my testimony I I wouldn't do it because I would think that well maybe they expected me to be the kind of speak of my brother is and I knew that I just couldn't disappoint anybody like that therefore I refused to do anything of that nature but you know I was reading in the early part of the Bible in the book of Exodus one time something that I'll certainly have not done enough of but try to read it daily and see what God has for me and I was reading in the third and fourth chapters of the book of Exodus and we find God speaking to a man and a man that didn't want to do what God had told him to do his name was Moses and it took the Lord a long time to train Moses and even after he spent many years in training to lead a nation of people when God said now you're all ready Moses to go lead a nation you know what Moses said and I'm not comparing myself in any way with such a man as he but he said Lord people won't hear me because I've got a slow time and a slow mind and a slow speech now nothing fitted me I'll fix me any better than that in other words Moses was saying I have no talent therefore what's the use and you know I read that time and time again and I began to see that well after all God didn't call me to be a preacher I believe that I believe he placed me where I am now believe he did it for a purpose so that I could be a personal witness to those that I come in contact with and you know I went over to the New Testament and tried to find something there and I read in the 12th chapter of Luke about the young farmer and that was me at that time who made so much he didn't know what to do with it well I hadn't made that much but I was like millions of people I was trying to get that and God said to this fella when he said he was going to eat drink and be merry God said to him something that he said to very few people he said you're a fool you're spending all your time on yourself and you're giving me nothing and that began to speak to me too this is exactly what had happened I had used my little puny excuse to really not do and not try to do anything for God but this is not what God wants ladies and gentlemen no matter who we are no where we come from or who I kiddin people are he wants a man or a woman that's willing to let him take their life and to use it as he sees fit and when I came to the place that I said Lord you know I can't get up before a group of people much less stand up there and talk to them he spoke to my heart and says you let me worry about that and I'll take care of all your disappointments all your troubles and all your difficulties and I have plenty of it and from that moment on I've seen God changed my life I was a Christian before that but I found out that God wants a person that is willing to let him direct his life me as a farmer Billy's a preacher Bev is a singer cliff is a song leader and I believe our position if we're called of God to do what we're doing I believe it's just as great in God's sight is standing up in the pool it's a real joy to come out here and to be with you people and God bless you but my my last word would be that of the Apostle Paul he said this is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners of whom I am choose and if he could save the Apostle Paul who was a persecutor of Christians he can do the same for anybody here tonight god bless him is good to be with [Applause] Thank You Melvin now it's my great delight to present to you a lady who loves everybody has a heart that envelops the whole world and she tells it like it is in our own wonderful way as well Ethel we're delighted to have you here in your own home City Oh Mary yeah god bless you say a word [Music] [Applause] you know babies that's where I have to reach it Laura's been so good to me this year just think I was in New York thanks to my precious baby back here Billy oh I just love that boy so and he's made it possible he has made it possible for me to be able to stand up here and tell you all of you wonderful children how much I love my Jesus oh it's just great and I just want to say since Christ my soul from [Music] to me and emitter circles and it's whoo [Music] tis heaven my Jesus here too Oh hallelujah yes just heaven it's happened just to know and really no really no your sins are forgiven so on land or sea or in me where Jesus his heaven you know once heaven seemed [Music] till my Jesus show actually show [Music] and now since it's begun [Music] twill West while in Oh [Music] it's heaven just - no really no really know that your sins are forgiven Shawn and I see [Music] where my Jesus his heaven [Music] and that's not social security that's everlasting secure [Applause] we've had so many wonderful things tonight that I don't think that we need a sermon and my message will be brief but I want everyone to bow their heads for a moment of Prayer for many of you that are listening this is an hour in which you are at the crossroads of your life you must make a choice tonight what you're going to do are you going to continue down the broad road that leads to destruction or will you change and go the narrow road that leads to eternal life this is the choice that only you can make God can prompt you he can help you his spirit can convict you his spirit can woo you but only you can make that choice God has given you that ability to make that choice you are a free moral agent as far as accepting or rejecting God's offer of forgiveness and heaven you must make that choice tonight and when you hear the message as you're going to hear it tonight and as you've already heard it in song and word your responsibility is 10,000 times greater to whom much is given much is required it's very important that you listen carefully and that you respond to the call of Christ our Father we pray that thy Holy Spirit will convict of sin of righteousness and of judgment and that many will say yes to Christ tonight for we ask it in his name our men now tonight I want you to turn with me to the ninth chapter of the book of Hebrews the ninth chapter of the book of Hebrews and one phrase out of that passage I want us to use as a text tonight without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness we read in our newspapers recently about the Red Guards of China marching down the streets of Peking shouting a slogan and it was an interesting slogan their slogan was without the shedding of blood there can be no revolution without the shedding of blood there can be no revolution the former president of the student body of UCLA who is now a Christian told one of my associates recently that blood is the symbol of world revolution and he said of many university campuses today blood has become the symbol of revolution and he declared that he would never have become a Christian had it not been for his having heard the message without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sin I'm sure that all of us remembered that tragic night when senator Kennedy was killed in the Ambassador Hotel here in Los Angeles and I think that all of us remember seeing that pool of blood on television on the floor or when President Kennedy was killed in Dallas and mrs. Kennedy arrived back in Washington and blood was still on her dress or the blood of Martin Luther King as he lay on that porch in that motel in Memphis Tennessee blood and it's very interesting that almost all the religions of the world have used blood as a symbol or have used blood to make an atonement to their gods or their God I remember when I was in college I did my college work in anthropology and I did my thesis on the blood of other religions and you can hardly find a religion anywhere in the world that did not use blood sacrifice for example the Aztec Indians down in South America in Peru would kill 20,000 people every year on their altars to make an atonement to their gods where did they get that idea I didn't Hawaii it wasn't just a few years ago we read in our newspapers that they were offering human sacrifices to the volcano I was in Moscow some time ago and I asked my guide why the Red Star what is the red star stand for with its five points and she said you don't know I said no she said the red star stands for the five continents of the world and the red stands for the blood that has to be shed before all the continents of the world had become socialist in our newspapers we read every day of blood being shed in Vietnam right here in Orange County we read of scores of people every year that are killed on the highways in the freeways blood is shed the crime that is committed blood is shed one of the most popular novels over the last few years was trimmin Capone's book in cold blood there's something that we shrink from and yet something that fascinates us about blood and when you pick up the Bible many people are amazed that there's blood from Genesis to Revelation why is there so much blood in the Bible I used to ask myself that question in fact at one period in my life it was a stumbling block why was there so much blood why did the Jews offer so many thousand of animals every year on their altars seemingly to appease an angry God why do we make so much of the blood of Jesus Christ all the way through the New Testament you're conscious of the blood of Jesus Christ and every time you pick up the bread and the wine and a communion service in your church you're reminded of the body that was broken and the blood that was shed and the one that you use in your communion service is symbolic of the blood that was shed on the cross where does that idea come from when you turn to Leviticus the seventeenth chapter in the eleventh verse and it says this for the life of the flesh is in the blood and I've given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls for it is the blood it is the blood that makes an atonement for the Soul in other words the Bible says you need atonement you need forgiveness you need to be reconciled to God and there's only one way you can do it and that's through the blood well the question comes to me tonight why the blood why did God not use something else why does God demand blood you know science has not yet found out what life really is there are some people that have an idea that in the next few years they science may be able to make a human being but they're wrong they may be able to make a body and a brain but they'll never be able to make a spirit or a soul and that's what distinguishes a man from an animal man has a spirit made in the image of God we live in a body temporarily in the body but our spirit our soul his eternal made in the image of God now our blood circulates every 23 seconds so that every cell in the body is constantly supplied and cleansed at the same time the blood carries all the garbage out without contamination it's the most mysterious substance of the body and is composed of the life of the body and every one of us here tonight black white red yellow rich of poor are all related we're related by blood Tatem God hath made of one blood all nations of men that dwell on the face of air we all have a common origin in Adam we all have the same blood the same blood relation Melvin is my brother but all of you are my brothers and sisters by creation and in a special sense if you know Christ we're brothers and sisters members of a special group called in the Bible the body of Christ but it's Adam's blood that goes through my veins and whether you're black or white Jew a Gentile pagan a cultured it's Adams blood because these you the trouble because you see the blood carries the sentence of death the blood stream has been contaminated by a disease called sin and the scripture says in Romans five wherefore as by one man sin entered into the world and death by sin and so death passed on all men so that all have sinned God had said to Adam and even the day you rebel against me in the day that you eat of this fruit that I say you shall not eat of if you eat it if you rebel you'll die man deliberately broke God's law and then the sentence of death fell upon him not only physical death but eternal death separation from God judgment hell separated from God and from the life of God because of the sin of Adam I am related to Adam I'm Adams son by one man by the man Adam sin entered into the world and when Adam fell from favor with God I fell when Adam received the sentence of death I received the sentence of death and today the sentence of death hangs heavy upon our world every graveyard testifies that it's appointed unto man once to die but that's only one death there are two other deaths in the Bible spiritual death many of you are alive physically but your soul is dead toward God and you don't find happiness and peace and security and fulfillment in this life you may become rich you may become powerful you may become popular you may have everything of material things but you have no fulfillment and no satisfaction and no joy and many people go all through life searching for something that they never find why because you have spiritual death you are separated from God now the third death is called in the Bible the second death or eternal death that means when you die your spirit lives on but it's separated from God that's spiritual and eternal death now man suffers from blood poisoning now there's a disease of the blood that we don't know too much about called leukemia many people die every year from leukemia but there's another disease that's fatal to the whole human race in the blood called sin and it has poisoned deaths and the penalty is death now how do we get purged from our sins we go right back to Adam and Eve when Adam and Eve sinned against God and rebelled against God God could have exploded this planet and the universe would have hardly known it he could have swept this planet away but the Bible says God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son God was not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance God says I love Adam and I love even I want to save them and I want to save their children and their children's children so God said about a magnificent wonderful plan to save them and what did he do without him when he found out I'm Adam and Eve were naked now there's nothing wrong with nudity dr. Dave Herbert is here on the platform president of fuller seminary and he wrote a wonderful article on this in the very beginning nudity was God's Way but it became perverted and distorted by sin and men felt ashamed because many had conscience he was no longer innocent and man hid from God and tried to sow fig leaves and cover himself up but he couldn't do it many of you tonight are selling fig leaves trying to cover yourself up you're hoping that because of your fairly decent life and because you treat others fairly well and maybe you belong to a church and maybe you've been baptized then but all those things that somehow you can get past God that somehow you can get to heaven you're sewing on fig leaves trying to work out your own salvation the Bible says for my are you saved through faith that not of yourselves it's the gift of God not of works lest any man should boast you cannot save yourself you cannot work your way you cannot buy your way all the money in Orange County couldn't buy one citizen of Orange County into heaven what did God do the Bible says God went out into the field and slew some beasts and made skins for them he shed blood and he was teaching man from that moment on there is no forgiveness of sin outside the shedding of blood let's look at Cain and Abel they were the first two sons of Adam and Eve God said that he wanted them to come and worship Him and Abel brought a blood sacrifice Cain brought a vegetable sacrifice he said I'm going to bring the finest sacrifice God has ever had and he brought a vegetable sacrifice and it's very interesting God rejected Cain and accepted Abel because Abel came by the way of blood and you can go from chapter to chapter throughout the Bible and you'll find the same story when Noah got out of the ark the Bible says and Noah built an altar unto the Lord and took of every clean beast and of every clean fowl and offered a burnt offering unto the Lord remember the story of Abraham and Isaac Abraham and Sarah had waited for a little boy and by a miracle a little boy was born and they named him Isaac and when he was just a lad God said Abraham I want you to go offer Isaac as a sacrifice on the altar how many of you would take your little boy and drive a knife into him if God told you to that's what God told Abraham to do you say how cruel how pagan how primitive how crude God was teaching Abraham a lesson and without questioning him Abraham took his little boy they went to Mount Moriah where Jerusalem is now located and there he tired his son down to the altar raised his hand with a knife in it and was going to plunge it into his son's heart on the command of God when God stayed his hand in midair and Abraham lifted up his eyes and he looked and behold behind him a ram was caught in the thicket by his horns and Abraham went and took the RAM and offered him up as a burnt offering in the stead of his son God was saying Abraham that Ram shall be offered in the place of your son God was pointing to the day hundreds of years in the future when he would offer his own son as the Lamb of God that taketh away the sin of the world remember that night in Egypt God said I'm going to destroy all the firstborn in Egypt as a judgment and he said I want all of you Israelites to take a lamb and slay the lamb and then take the blood and sprinkle it on the doorpost and the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are and when I see the Blood I will pass over and I will not bring judgment upon any house that has the blood there not when I see your good resolutions not when I see your tears not when I see your good works I will pass over when I see the blood and I can see that night in Egypt a father he kills the lamb he puts the blood on the doorpost and then the little family sits down to eat and the oldest son is very tense and very nervous and he says father I haven't lived a very good life and father I failed you and I failed God and I haven't been very religious but Oh father are you sure the blood is enough are you sure the blood is there and the father looks at his older son and he said son God didn't say when I see how good you are he said when I see the Blood I will pass over and that night every Israeli family was safe if the blood was that I you say that's foolish and that's exactly what the Bible says about the cross of Christ when Christ died on the cross and shed his blood for our sins we say it's ridiculous it's foolish we try to explain it we try to rationalize it we cannot do it the Bible says to the pagan world to the world that is outside of Christ it's foolish it's ridiculous it's idiotic it's moronic but the foolishness of God is wiser than men why did God choose blood I think one of the reasons is to teach us how ugly sin is you see we wink it's sin and we don't take sin seriously blood is something repulsive in the moment we see blood we shrink from it and blood always reminds us of our sins when I see the blood of Christ I'm reminded that I'm a sinner and I'm reminded that God loves me I shrink from it it repulses me and that's the way sinners in the sight of God it repulses God he shrinks from our sins when I see the Blood I will pass over I look at the New Testament our Lord is weeping over Jerusalem he's sweating drops of blood in the garden and then on the cross he's dying and the blood is coming down his face and coming down his hands and down his side and down his feet 14 times he predicted his own death he told Nicodemus as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness even so must the Son of Man be lifted up the blood of Christ is mentioned in the New Testament 255 times why the Bible says first of all the blood redeemed so as much as you know that he were not redeemed with corruptible things as silver and gold from your vain conversation received by tradition from your father's but with the precious blood of Christ as of a lamb without blemish and without spot salvation is free to you but it costs God his son who shed his blood willingly voluntarily for you and the word Redemption means to buy back why do you need to be bought back because the Bible says you're the slave of sin whosoever committeth sin as the slave of sin said Jesus and John 8:34 how many of you tonight of slaves of some habit your slaves of pride your slaves of jealousy slaves of prejudice you don't want to have prejudice against a black man you'd like to be free from it but you do have it slaves of some secret sects in that nobody knows anything about you'd like to be free but you can't you bound slave of some drug you're trying to hide it but it's there and you know it that secret thing down deep you're a slave you can't break free Jesus said we're slaves of sin and he said I came to buy you back and I gave my blood to buy you back he can free you tonight he can give you a joy and a peace and an assurance that you never knew before if you let him remember summersault mom's book Human Bondage how he rejected God and became a slave of sin how many of you here tonight have done the same you haven't rejected God openly like somersault man has but by your living and by the way you live and by your attitude you've really rejected him and you're a slave tonight you'd like to be free he died to make you free secondly the Bible teaches that we're justified by the blood Romans 5:9 much more than being now justified by his blood we shall be saved from wrath through him what does justified mean it means just as if I had never sinned to be placed in the sight of God as though you'd never committed a sin now think about that a moment God doesn't just forgive you oh you'd like to be forgiven but he does more than that he justifies you as though the sin had never been committed and it's done by the blood being justified by his blood don't ask me how I don't know I accepted by faith and I want to tell you this when I get to the entrance of heaven I'm not going to say Lord my name's Billy Graham I was that preacher down there in Anaheim I'm gonna say Lord I'm here pleading nothing but the blood that's my only password the cross where my salvation was accomplished more than forgiveness God takes you tonight and makes you cleaner and purer than any virgin that ever lived in his sight when you come before God the Bible says he can't even remember your sins think of it you can remember them but God cannot even remember them you are justified as though you'd never committed a sin and then the Bible says the blood makes us all equal one tongue one language one race you see when you come to Christ you become members of one body how wonderful it is to be a member of the body of Christ from all the languages of the world and all the races of the world God at this moment is gathering out of people for his name and they're there by the thousands in places that you never dreamed up and if the door could be pulled open as God looks upon China we think of China as a closed mission field today but if you could see China as God sees it you'd see God has his people here and there and everywhere and I suspect that someday when the curtain is rolled back we will hear such stories of revival that the world is never known in China I'm sure that's true in Eastern Europe tonight God is at work where members of the same body and when I meet Christians this past summer I met Christians from every country of Eastern Europe I met them from Russia and I met them from Czechoslovakian from Bulgaria and from Romania and from Hungary from all those countries I met Christians except from Albania and I was their brother the moment I met them in fact every time I met one he started crying he was so thrilled to see us and when I spoke to a thousand leaders in Eastern Europe this past summer they cried the whole time I talked stories of revival members of the same body I couldn't speak their language but I was a member of the same body we were united we were blood brothers by the blood there's a blood covenant around this earth that no political power can ever break it's a kingdom greater than America greater than Russia greater than China it's the kingdom of God and we're members by the blood and the blood of Christ brings peace Colossians 1:20 and having made peace through the blood of his cross we are living in a world at war and the shadow of a third world war hangs over the whole world but the kind of war that it's talking about here is the war that is going on between God and man's sin God makes peace through the blood of the Cross he makes peace between you and God wouldn't it be wonderful to go to bed it and tonight and know that all your sins were forgiven that you're justified in the sight of God and you have God's peace in your heart the Bible says the blood cleanses revelation 1:5 unto him that loved us and washed us from our sins in his own blood the Bible says the blood of Christ reconciles we have blood banks and I remember a few years ago when I had an operation and I nearly bled to death they gave me transfusions and I was glad for those blood banks tonight there is a blood bank that we can apply to by faith that will take our guilt and our sin away heart transplants are the medical sensation of our time and two factors determine the success of failure of the blood draw of the heart transplant first there must be a donor we've got an eternal donor a heavenly Dona Jesus Christ who died for you and gave his blood and gave his heart for you the second thing the patient can accept or reject the heart he receives and the great problem they're finding now is rejection tonight God gives you the power to accept or reject I'm sure that when the heart transplants take place that the patient doesn't understand all the scientific chemistry involved in all that's going to be done maybe the doctor doesn't understand it all either and in this case I know I don't understand it all and nowhere in the bible does it say that you have to know it all or that you have to understand it all the Bible says that you come by simple childlike faith and that's the reason jesus said you have to come as a little child he said if you're ever going to be converted you have to come as a little child because if you try to come like a full grown man and try to intellectualize you away and figure it out logically step-by-step you're going to stumble because God hasn't allowed us to know him by wisdom alone you have to come by the foolishness of the gospel and the preaching of the Cross is foolishness to them that perish in other words you have to be willing to become a fool for Christ's sake and receive him by faith and do something that looks rather ridiculous like Moses lifting up that brass serpent in the wilderness as though that would heal anybody or as though that had any medical qualities it had none but God wanted it to be a symbol of faith you see God wants you to please him by faith faith pleases God more than anything you have faith in Christ have faith that he died for you have faith that he rose again receive him and say I'm going to put my total trust and confidence in him and then something supernatural takes place inside that none of us can explain you are born from above life becomes new and different you have a new power a new capacity to face life from this moment all and I'm going to ask you tonight to receive Christ father mother young man young woman you need Christ in your heart tonight you need to be forgiven of your sin you want to be justified in the sight of God you want to be cleansed tonight you want to trust in the blood and the blood of Christ alone for your salvation and you want your life changed and you want to accept him and receive him tonight as your Lord and your Savior you may be a member of the church you may be a church officer you may be Catholic or Protestant a Jewish you may not have any religion but God has spoken to you tonight and you need Christ and you need to receive him and you want to be sure that you're ready to meet God I'm going to ask you to do something hard I'm going to ask you to get out of your seat hundreds of you from all over the stadium and come and stand on this ground down here and say by coming I receive Christ into my heart if you're with friends or relatives they'll wait if you've come in a bus they'll wait why do I ask you to come forward because every person Jesus called in the New Testament he called publicly he could have said to the man with the withered arm be healed but he didn't do it he said stretch it forth he wanted him to do something he said if you're not willing to acknowledge me publicly before men I'll not acknowledge you before my father which is in up in that top balcony it will take you three minutes the second one two minutes down here one minute don't you let distance keep you from Christ you come right now men women young people hundreds of you get up out of your seat if you've brought a friend bring your friend with you and come just get up and come and after you've all come what are we going to do I'm going to say a word to all of
