[Music] there's a rumor spreading around and a small desert town but a shack outside la and my next guest knows what i'm talking about [Music] hey guys how you doing senor his sunglasses may be cheap but billy gibbons priceless as the front man of the legendary rock group zz top for nearly 50 years billy is belted out hit after legendary hit while you may know the band best for their bushy beards and rock ballads their iconic hot rods have definitely defined them as well the most recognizable ride to date would be the eclectic eliminator which not only graced the cover of multiple albums a cruise on camera in the music videos for give me all your loving shop dressed man and legs what are you doing out here oh yeah since i retired it's about this place i live out here now what's going on hi jay good to see you with junior sean yeah yeah yeah jimmy shine is a legend in his own right as the owner of shine's speed shop he's chopped and dropped classic hot rods both his 30 years tell me about this one because this one's a lot similar to the one the video wouldn't it this one is the bad little sister right now what is this light here with this bonneville chop the headlights didn't quite make sense right but then we found an underwing aircraft landing light and i said well if we invert it we could come out of the hood yeah can we open the engine can i see what that is yeah jimmy come on over here and uh show it off to us it's a 1946 pre-production oh wow 331 cad right you know being the early block it has the bell housing on the back of the motor and we cut a turbo 350 bell housing and actually welded on the proper flange to make an automatic so it's user-friendly to you right so keeping it simple we got to get from a to the mexican restaurant back to a this purple frame rail was kind of a tribute to taking a piece of cadzilla so it's bad little sister of lemonade or still going to have some purple in it catzilla purple but you do get that sense of machine meets art can we take it for a ride i think we should do it time to fire it up button this thing up before we do that can you throw me the keys so we can recreate it like you did in the video yeah all right let me get over here yeah okay okay sun's kinda in my eye but go ahead let's try it [Music] i hear a lawsuit coming you okay it's all right it's all right it's okay you're good enough to drive yeah i'm fine okay yeah after i ice my eye it's time to roll down the road and some cold blue steel i gotta tell you once you get behind the wheel of one of these it's hard not to feel like a badass oh yeah we're nationwide it actually drives the steers very nice i mean it's still a work in progress i mean the body's all held together with clamps and stuff we're actually not doing too bad no it's not all right anytime you're rolling you're doing all right we left a we know there's b out there yeah we still know where he is exactly so what was the first vehicle you got when you made some money had a little bit of success well my two partners still the same three guys right playing the same three chords but i was driving the same old car three chords that sounds funny but uh they said can you step it up a little bit the mercedes came out with their little roadster a 380 sl so that was your first normal car pretty much yeah that was the first normal car you always like to build your own hot rod well growing up there was uh the two brothers at the end of the street the younger brother had a 27 t bucket the older brother had a nicely customized 57 chevy they also had a band so i got the best of both worlds in the afternoon they'd be rehearsing in the front yard in the late afternoon they'd start wrenching so they could go out at night and that kind of set me up do you write music in the car do you think of chords and songs and rhythms while you're driving oh yeah the genesis of cheap sunglasses i was behind the wheel and maybe that that creative expression does come out when you're feeling that sense of independence now when you're on tour with the group you take some of the cars don't you the eliminator we loaned it to the rock and roll hall of fame you can still go up and see it of course cadzilla sits at the peterson auto museum right well tell me about your relationship between music and cars i've been asked many times why does rock and roll and cars maybe we should go back to chuck berry 1955 maybelline maybelline yeah and then of course before that rocket 88 stock of 88 there's hot rod lincoln oh my gosh there's always been this connection yeah nobody really has uh the definitive answer i just kind of go with it knowing that fast loud let's leave it at that a sharp-dressed man with a well-made point i think we've eased down the highway enough in this old
