<i>- It's been 35 years</i> <i>that I've spent</i> <i>and I believe, ultimately,</i> the "Republic" wants me to find her treasure. <i>The "Republic" departed New York</i> <i>January 22, 1909.</i> <i>She was known as the "Millionaires' Ship"</i> <i>because of the luxuriousness,</i> <i>and considered unsinkable,</i> <i>just like "Titanic."</i> <i>Newspapers reported the "Republic" sank</i> <i>with a fortune in gold,</i> <i>but whose money was it?</i> <i>Why was it on "Republic"?</i> <i>Why is there no manifest?</i> <i>Why was there no formal inquiry?</i> <i>There was a cover-up.</i> <i>- My father went out for the gold once before.</i> <i>- We're joined this morning by Martin Bayerle.</i> <i>- Martin Bayerle, one of the many who dreamed of finding--</i> - Over $1 billion worth of gold. - But he failed. <i>The wreck ruined his life</i> <i>and destroyed our family, but...</i> <i>this is my dad's last chance.</i> - This is what we are looking for. <i>- We've assembled a team. Hold on a second.</i> - The primary generator's down. <i>- This is a debacle.</i> - Heading back to Boston. - Reminds me of the 1987 effort. - Now you believe that there's a lot of gold on that ship. - Mm-hm. <i>- Martin had investors' money, our money,</i> everything tied up in this '87 salvage attempt, and it failed. <i>- Generator coming on board!</i> <i>- I told Martin I wanted a divorce.</i> <i>I'd had it.</i> I met somebody else. <i>[ominous music]</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>- My research, if I say so myself,</i> is impeccable. It's--all right, I won't be-- I won't be shy. I believe my research is brilliant. <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>Remember,</i> <i>when Italy was in a desperate need,</i> <i>following the earthquake at Messina,</i> <i>President Roosevelt promised $800,000</i> <i>as a relief fund.</i> <i>That's just the beginning of the money trail.</i> <i>The U.S. Navy was in the Mediterranean</i> <i>when the earthquakes occurred,</i> and the U.S. government, since we were on site, <i>said, "Well, we're gonna assign battleship supplies--</i> <i>surplus supplies that we don't immediately need--</i> <i>to earthquake relief.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> But then those supplies had to be replenished. <i>So the RMS "Republic" wasn't carrying gold for Italy.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>She carried gold for the U.S. Navy.</i> <i>But that gold never arrived.</i> The money now lies 40 fathoms deep in the North Atlantic. <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>- Got everybody in position?</i> <i>We are over the wreck.</i> <i>Just farther astern than where we want it.</i> Around cargo hold six to seven. Let's go down and take a look around. - After being forced to cut short our salvage efforts, we are now back over the "Republic." <i>We've already had our share of setbacks,</i> <i>and now we've wasted all of our daylight</i> <i>getting back into our anchor spread.</i> This is how it is working offshore-- working on this wreck in particular. <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>But we need a diver in the water.</i> <i>We have to move this effort forward.</i> We're gonna dive at night. <i>♪ ♪</i> - Joe, real quick, come with me. - The route to the gold would begin with those double doors. - So do you want to call dive objective one is trying to find the double doors? - Yes. - Dive objective two is targets of opportunity on the way there... - Yes. - And the way back? - Perfect. - Okay. <i>- The dives we've made on this expedition</i> <i>have just scratched the surface.</i> <i>This is an immense wreck.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>To get to the gold chamber, we have to get inside the ship.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>There are a set of double doors near hold number 6.</i> <i>We believe that we can access the gold chamber</i> through those double doors. We have to take a look at them. We now want to see the starboard side and see what these double doors look like, 'cause there may be access into our specie room location. This would be the start of the route to the gold. - Yep. - Yeah. - Understood. - You're our man, Joel. [laughs] - All right. Break a leg. - Yep. <i>- Be safe, Joel! - Thank you.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>- This wreck is hard enough to navigate</i> <i>when you've got some daylight shining through.</i> <i>But at night, all you have is your helmet light,</i> <i>which makes it even more difficult.</i> It's not ideal to be diving this wreck at night, but we're running out of time. We've got to do it. <i>[dramatic music]</i> - He's in. He's in. - You ready? - Yeah, I'm ready. - All right, Allen. Let's go ahead and put him in the water. [indistinct chatter] - All right, now, everybody clear. Go down. - The diver is descending. This is a night dive. <i>We'll just have to see what the diver finds.</i> <i>[ominous music]</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>- Crossing over.</i> - Roger that. Crossing over to the stage. <i>- No current to speak of.</i> <i>All right. Dropping down.</i> <i>- Roger that.</i> <i>Leaving surface, he's dropping down.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> - We may not be able to recognize it. We may not be able to recognize the doors, and we might not-- the path to get to the doors may not be clean, so it's gonna be a lot of looking around, a lot of trying to get his bearings. <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>- I see the bell.</i> - Roger that. Bell in sight. <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>- I am on the bell.</i> - Roger that. You ready for gas? <i>- Ready for gas.</i> <i>- Here you go. Ventilate, ventilate.</i> <i>- Ventilating.</i> <i>- Roger that. Diver's on gas. 1-5-0.</i> <i>Let's come down on the wet bell.</i> <i>Down on the wet bell.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>- Touchdown.</i> We're on the wreck. Now he's gonna try to find the--all right. There's the ROV light. - ROV right there. <i>- That's pointing his direction.</i> - All right, what I need you to do is go wave at the ROV and then turn around and go the opposite direction. <i>Wave hi to your little buddy.</i> <i>All right, bud, let's turn around and go the other way,</i> <i>mindful of your hose all the time.</i> - 30 minutes of bottom time, roughly. You agree? - Yeah, we have the clock running, so... <i>- The diver has 30 minutes.</i> <i>He's got to make his way to the starboard side,</i> find the double doors, and try to make his way inside the wreck. <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>- I believe that's off the starboard side to your right.</i> <i>Is it not?</i> <i>Kind of looks like it's off in the abyss there.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> - All right. 25 feet, or about 20 feet farther forward on the starboard side is where the double doors are, okay? - You have got about another 20 minutes left. <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>What's all--is that net?</i> <i>- Yeah, that's net.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>- What? Oh, that's fishing net, okay.</i> - Yeah, that's net. - Yeah, fishing net. - Eww. <i>- And you can see all the fish around here.</i> <i>This wreck's become a reef.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> - Quite a pile of junk, huh? <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>- Yeah, that thing's a mess.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>You should be forward of the double doors.</i> <i>- Dave, the diver's actually</i> <i>ten feet forward of the double doors.</i> <i>- Okay. Perfect. All right.</i> All right, you are in the prime viewing area for the double doors, so just be looking around there, buddy. <i>♪ ♪</i> - There's a lot of debris down there. It's tough to come up with any kind of recognizable feature... - Yeah. - That you can map off of. It's too wiped out. - Looks like one of our other lines. - Yeah. - He should be-- <i>he should be right over the double doors.</i> <i>- I've been with this for 35 years,</i> <i>and I've learned</i> that perseverance will prevail. - Less than 15 minutes left in this dive. - Whether that's being able to solve a over-100-year-old mystery... <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>Or...</i> He's close. Protecting my...family. <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>- So we have $800,000 in Navy money</i> <i>connected to the Italian earthquake victims</i> <i>in Messina, Italy.</i> Well, $800,000 today-- <i>bring in the unique coin value--</i> <i>the collector's value of the coins,</i> <i>since they're turn of the century coins--</i> you're talking way over $1/4 billion. $250 million. [horn blares] <i>But that wasn't the only gold aboard "Republic."</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>[electronic beeping]</i> <i>- I think I'm close.</i> - What's that? <i>[ominous music]</i> What did you say, Joel? <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>- He's close.</i> <i>[dramatic music]</i> We are looking for the starboard set of double doors adjacent to hold number six. <i>- We're trying to locate a set of double doors</i> that hopefully would provide access into where we believe the gold to be. <i>♪ ♪</i> Ten minutes left. <i>But time is running out quickly on our diver,</i> and we still haven't met our objective. <i>♪ ♪</i> - Inside the hull? <i>You think that--so that's not the side shell there or--</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>- Oh, you think the side shell has fallen away.</i> - It's getting confusing. - We're also at an angle. I mean, that's an angular distance. - No, no, I get it. - He's staying above decks though. <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>- It seems like he's forward--</i> like, we had to have just passed them. I don't see the double doors. I don't see the door casing. I'm not seeing any kind of definitive...landmarks. I... <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>That area is just chaos.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> - Five minutes left. <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>- Just keep looking around.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>Ooh, is that a porthole?</i> <i>- I think so.</i> - What's that? both: Porthole. - Uh... - We found a nice porthole. - Roger. Hang on to that porthole, okay, buddy? <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>- About two minutes left there, bubba.</i> - Two minutes. Two minutes left. <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>- Roger. Slack diver ten.</i> That's about all the dive hose you got, there, buddy. We can give you a little more, but not much. <i>♪ ♪</i> - Yeah, less than a minute. <i>♪ ♪</i> - Roger that. Roger that, buddy. <i>♪ ♪</i> - Time's up. - Yeah, we're at zero. <i>[ominous music]</i> - All right, let's head on back to the bell up there. <i>♪ ♪</i> - Diver's headed back to the stage. <i>♪ ♪</i> - We didn't identify the double doors on this trip, but we're in the area. <i>♪ ♪</i> - The diver was all across the area where I expected the double doors to be. No sign of them. <i>- Coming up.</i> <i>- On the surface.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> - Hold on. - Cancel that. - All right. - Okay. We need to check that. <i>♪ ♪</i> - This trip, we now have different problems. <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>But the operation was successful</i> in that we acquired more information. <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>We've examined the starboard side.</i> [gas hissing] - They're saying right now starboard side is kind of a waste of time. - I think so. <i>♪ ♪</i> - There is no access to the gold chamber on the starboard side. - Port side's gonna be the next target, I guess. - Yeah, exactly. - Now we're gonna look on port side. <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>You have to gauge your decision on information.</i> The information is primary. <i>[distorted keypad tones]</i> <i>- After I talked to Mr. Robotti,</i> when he said, you know, "Pay me $10,000 and I'll stay away from your wife and children," <i>I thought to myself, "Well, let's find out</i> <i>who this person is."</i> <i>I hired a private investigator.</i> I did a background check on him. He had never worked for anywhere <i>for more than two or three months.</i> <i>He was a transient, basically.</i> <i>One job, he lived in his car.</i> And he'd just gotten a job up in Pennsylvania. So I actually drove up there to confront him. <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>We had a very interesting conversation.</i> He said-- and I love this quote. He says, "You know, you should mind your own business." I said, "Wait a minute," you know. "This is my wife. This is my children. This is my business." <i>♪ ♪</i> - It became clear, particularly after I met Mr. Robotti, <i>that he was unstable.</i> <i>For my own safety, I thought it prudent</i> <i>to tape-record our conversations.</i> <i>I had looked at the legal avenues.</i> I tried getting the FBI involved. And it was-- everyone considered it a domestic situation. It wasn't their family. It wasn't their children. You know, what legal options did I have? It wasn't their family. It wasn't their children. <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>- I believe the RMS "Republic"</i> <i>carried $800,000 in Navy monies</i> <i>bound for the Great White Fleet down at Gibraltar.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> Well, the Navy monies alone would justify a salvage or recovery. But now we get into the big monies. <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>On the days after the sinking,</i> <i>rumors circulated in New York.</i> The amount of the rumor was always, specifically, $3 million in newly minted gold eagles, <i>U.S. currency.</i> <i>That gold is in addition to the $800,000 Navy monies.</i> <i>As I researched the rumor,</i> I managed to isolate a specific transaction that occurred in New York that was reported by the newspapers, <i>and the amount of the mysterious transaction</i> <i>was $3 million.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>The magic number corresponded</i> <i>to the rumored money aboard "Republic."</i> <i>The newspapers reported it because it was unusual</i> <i>in that it was substantially below the money market rate.</i> But they didn't identify-- they didn't identify the lender or the borrower. <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>But as I dug further,</i> <i>I found out who the borrower was.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>[electronic beeping]</i> <i>- All right, gentlemen.</i> <i>We're getting ready to dive.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> All right, Allen. <i>- Diver's ready.</i> <i>Launch the stage.</i> [machinery whirring] - Watch your shoulder, brother. <i>♪ ♪</i> - We are looking for the set of double doors. <i>♪ ♪</i> And, of course, the specie room would be below that, so we want to examine the doors to see if that area's accessible from the port side. <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>- Diver's 30 feet from the bell.</i> - We've previously looked at the area from the starboard side. [gas hissing] - Here we go. <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>- Here we go.</i> - Roger that. Diver has got the gas. <i>♪ ♪</i> All right, my friend. Starting your time. <i>- Thank you.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>- Coming down in the wet bell.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> - The diver is close to the wreck. <i>♪ ♪</i> - Roger that. Doing okay, buddy? <i>- Roger. Doing good.</i> - Starboard or port? <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>- Get some hose and pull your way port.</i> <i>- Slack diver.</i> - Roger. Slack the diver. - Slacking diver. <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>- Slack diver.</i> - Slack me a little faster. <i>♪ ♪</i> Man, how far do we think? <i>- 38 feet.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>- Roger that. Working your way to the center.</i> - If he's inboard, he should be somewhere right over the top of six. <i>♪ ♪</i> - We're thinking you are, at this point in time, kind of over cargo hold six. - We're in the area approximate to the double doors. <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>- Slack diver.</i> <i>- I will attempt to do so.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> - He seems to have stopped at this one spot. <i>♪ ♪</i> - So is he returning? <i>♪ ♪</i> - That's it. He's done. <i>- Up on diver's slack.</i> - Up on diver's slack. Coming up on your slack. <i>♪ ♪</i> - The diver couldn't get to where we wanted him to go simply because his umbilical isn't long enough to get there. <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>That's it. There's no argument.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> - Here we go. Traveling. <i>- Traveling.</i> <i>- Diver is off bottom.</i> - We cannot access the gold chamber from this location. <i>♪ ♪</i> - All right, Allen. Here we go. <i>- Roger, roger.</i> <i>- We will be briefed thoroughly by our diver.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>And we are going to examine the tape that we acquired.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>- Oh, really? - Yeah.</i> <i>- Anything interesting on it? - Oh, yeah.</i> <i>Okay?</i> <i>- Oh, wait, so am I offering you money now</i> <i>to buy this tape so you don't turn it in to the FBI?</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>The man tried to blackmail me.</i> He not only had designs to destroy my marriage and manipulate my wife and separate her, <i>but he also had intentions of destroying my life.</i> This is the type of psychopathic, manipulative control that this man exercised. - I was concerned about how, indeed, this man was affecting my wife and my children, <i>but I couldn't get a restraining order</i> <i>to keep this man away.</i> <i>I had no control over the situation.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>♪</i> ♪ <i>- Through an examination of the Ellis Island records...</i> <i>I found that a Mr. Gregory Wilinken</i> <i>had arrived on January 14, 1909.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> One day before these mysterious newspaper articles regarding the $3 million 30-day loan appeared. <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>Gregory Wilinken was a financial agent</i> <i>of the Russian czarist government.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> Officially, the cover story was that he was in New York <i>on his way to take up a permanent post in Japan.</i> <i>And he stays in New York for approximately a week.</i> <i>He leaves New York one day after "Republic" sails.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> I believe that he was in New York to acquire money for the Russian government. <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>- Allen, how are you? - Good.</i> - All the joints still working? - So far. - That's always a good thing. - So tell us about your dive. - I think I was probably up in this location. - Okay. - So with the little bit of umbilical that I had left, I could only get to about this area. <i>♪ ♪</i> We're outside of where we need to be to work effectively. <i>♪ ♪</i> - So we have to move the boat? - For safety and productivity, we got to move the vessel. - All right. - I would say we're about here, so we need to move to the southeast. - Slack up on the port stern, come up on the bow anchor. - Right. <i>- We need to be on dives that are providing us</i> with intelligence as to how we go about accomplishing our goal. <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>We need to get our anchors in position and set</i> <i>before we can get back to diving.</i> - All right. Let's go. <i>♪ ♪</i> - Having to reposition the boat is an expensive proposition. We are spending thousands of dollars every hour. It's extremely disappointing to have to do this <i>in order to conduct diving operations.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> - All right. The wreck is probably about 40, 50 feet out in front of us. We need to maintain that tension on the bow rope and be slacking slowly on the stern. <i>♪ ♪</i> - We're gonna creep up on it, okay? - Roger that. Here we go, guys. Take it as she gives. <i>♪ ♪</i> - We're almost over top of the wreck again. Pull us forward a little bit, and stay tight on this bow anchor. <i>♪ ♪</i> - Come on, baby! <i>♪ ♪</i> - All stop. - All stop. <i>♪ ♪</i> - That's all you got. Dog her off. - All right, we think we got it. <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>- Oh, boy!</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> At least one anchor's gotten fouled up on bottom. <i>♪ ♪</i> We're not doing any diving. <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>- The ocean's constantly moving.</i> <i>The wind's shifting. The currents are shifting.</i> <i>Moving that anchor this way</i> tangled two of our mooring lines into the wreck. <i>It's not a good situation.</i> <i>Another little chat we're having.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>That's nice.</i> <i>- Well, you're a real animal, buddy.</i> <i>- You play poker?</i> <i>Eh.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>- In 1905...</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>The Russians ended a costly war with Japan.</i> <i>[gunfire and shouting]</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>The czar was deeply in debt.</i> The war had cost Russia approximately $150 million. They raised a war bond to fight that, and that war bond now required to be repaid in 1909. <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>When the "Republic" sank, the rumors circulated.</i> The governments neither confirmed nor denied the rumors. That is the only choice they had. <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>So we have $800,000 of Navy money,</i> <i>$3 million in Russian gold,</i> <i>negotiated by Gregory Wilinken,</i> <i>all being shipped aboard RMS "Republic."</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>That alone,</i> <i>based primarily on mint-state condition coins,</i> <i>highly collectible,</i> would be worth at least $1 billion. <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>[electronic beeping]</i> <i>- The two balls that were over here,</i> <i>one's hung up on the wreck.</i> <i>The other one is fetched up</i> <i>right around hold five and six.</i> <i>- It's not a good situation.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> - What's up? - Well, we have two anchors fouled, but they're visible. At least we know where they are. <i>♪ ♪</i> - Okay. - It's par for the course. You have your problems working offshore. So you get the problem, identify and deal with it. - Yeah. <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>[indistinct radio chatter]</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>- The anchor problem is a huge issue.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> The only way that we can safely splash a diver to 270 feet <i>is to make sure that we're securely anchored</i> <i>to the seabed.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> We really need to get these anchors unfouled. So we got plan A is get the ROV in the water. - Good. - Yeah, good. - They got the manipulator on it so that if we do have to... - Just in case. - Then we can grab the line and swim it around. - Maneuver it. - Yep. - Perfect. - Plan B, we'll cross that bridge when we get there. - Yeah. - Tell him to come up-- swing right faster if he can. <i>♪ ♪</i> - I've spent most of my life attempting to recover "Republic's" gold. - All stop. Wire down. <i>♪ ♪</i> - It's frustrating being on top of "Republic" in these ideal conditions and not being able to dive. <i>♪ ♪</i> [propeller whirs] - ROV's in the water. <i>♪</i> ♪ <i>- Launched the ROV.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>- You're over the top.</i> <i>You need to come back over the stern line</i> <i>if you're gonna go in between.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> [motor whirring] <i>[dramatic music]</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>We're at a critical point right here.</i> <i>We've got to send the ROV down</i> <i>and try to untangle the mooring lines.</i> If these mooring lines snap, we're done. That's it. Pack it up and head to shore. - Worst-case situation, if it's snagged. <i>♪</i> ♪ <i>We have no eyes on the bottom.</i> <i>We don't want to lose the ROV</i> <i>trying to fetch an anchor.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>- While the ROV's on bottom,</i> the only thing holding it to the ship is a small, little umbilical the size of your thumb. <i>If the boat shifts,</i> <i>and the ROV is held up on the wreck,</i> <i>the umbilical's gonna break,</i> and we lose a $500,000 piece of equipment. <i>This expedition cannot afford to lose a $500,000 ROV.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> - I see...something coming up. - Yep. There she is! <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>- How the hell? - We see where the, uh--</i> <i>where she's wrapped around.</i> <i>- That's the mast.</i> - There is our problem. - Yep. - You can see it's just-- - One turn, it looks like. So now we get to see how good Aaron is playing video games. - [laughs] <i>[ominous music]</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>- The anchor line is tangled up in the shipwreck.</i> <i>The ROV has a manipulator arm</i> <i>that we're gonna try to use to free it.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>It's no easy task.</i> <i>The currents down there are pushing that ROV</i> <i>all over the place.</i> <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>If we don't do it with perfect precision,</i> the ROV could cut the line, and that's game over. - Can we have a little slack, please? - Slack up on that line. - Hold on, hold on, hold on, all stop. <i>♪ ♪</i> <i>- Oh, maybe!
