something very exciting is happening at the end of this month the last weekend of january it's the 29th to the 31st it's going to be the world's largest garden wildlife survey run by the rspb and it's called the big garden bird watch it's been running for 40 years and it highlights the winners and the losers in the garden bird world what you need to do is you need to spend an hour counting the birds in your garden or in your park or from your balcony it's that simple and what you need to do is you need to count the tot the maximum amount of a species you see at one time now you can't count how many you see in all because you might accidentally count the same bird twice so it's all about the maximum number of species you see in your area at one time and you need to head to rspb.org.uk you can even register online beforehand and they'll send you out an identification pack to help you identify the birds and then you have to submit what you've seen online i'm gonna show you my top five garden birds to give you a bit of a head start on identifying the species a bird i'm getting in my garden a lot in winter is the blackbird now here you've got the male blackbird it's black and it's got a yellow beak and the female is is more brown the song of a black bird is arguably the most beautiful and best loved song around this is what the song sounds like and number two for me is probably colored doves um colored doves only came to the uk in the 1950s and they've rapidly spread across europe and the middle east they're everywhere they're the ma they have a grey bird with a um black collar uh the males and females look very very similar it's hard to tell the difference they're very polite and well made of bird and and their call is brilliant i always think collard doves call cool like this they say you united united [Music] and house sparrows i have got loads of house sparrows in my house i must have had about seven nests last year they do very well in my garden but house sparrows have actually declined 60 since the 70s this makes them a red listed species bird it's very easy to tell difference the males have a lovely black bit around their neck and they almost like they're wearing a suit they're a lot smarter and the girls are much duller and more regularly brown we've all got lots of parakeets in it they're everywhere the earliest record of parakeet was actually in 1855 they've either escaped or they've been deliberately released over the years the males have a black ring around their neck hence the name ringneck parakeet and the females don't have that ring they have a very loud screeching called parakeets this is the call so you can't miss that and i have apparently one last year in my garden i had to think about seven of them at one time they love eating apples as well and robin now i get the odd robin in my garden and i love a robin they are the uk's national bird they're very friendly and they're very hard to sex males and females both have lovely bright red chests and the males and the females both sing all year long and they're probably one of the few birds singing through the winter so this is what robbie looks like and it's always a joy to see robin in your garden so i'm going to remind you near at the time of the big garden bird watch on this page i just wanted to get you the heads up so you can register online and get your information pack sent through and just get yourself ready for the big garden bird watch guys and i'd love it if you could let me know what you've seen that'll be brilliant thanks a lot you
