BIG BULL is here! But will the lady cows like him?

folks today on the stony ridge farmer we're bringing in a big old bull [Music] i ain't afraid of work i ain't afraid of play i ain't afraid to get the job done and do it my own damn way [Music] i ain't afraid of [Music] times like this [Music] hey there folks this is josh stoney ridge farmer welcome back to another gorgeous day here on the stoney ridge farm all around us is 150 acre cattle farm and it's a first generation farm what we're doing today on the farm is we're bringing in so my stepdad and i kind of partner up a little bit on the farm we'll be pulling all the way over the other side of the farm and letting them into a gate over there that gate is where the cows are today okay so the cows will be moved along with the bull every single day here on the farm so we're just kind of hanging tight and waiting for them to come i hope you guys enjoy this all right folks thanks so much for joining me here on the stoney ridge so if you don't know about the farm what we do here and you'll see this wire there's a poly wire a polyethylene electric fence wire that separates the entire pasture so we have the cows grazing about a one acre paddock every single day here on the farm we move the cows every day it's called regenerative farming and we're helping to build the soil up here on the stoney ridge farm what that does moving these cows from one paddock to the next paddock and a paddock is simply a pasture what that does is it makes the cows eat all of the grass not just the sweet and the tender and leaving the weeds so they will graze the entire pasture and these are multi-species pasture we raise our cows on multiple types of grass what that does is it builds a healthier animal and it builds a better immune system we can't have our cows on a mono crop or a mono culture you think about it this way if you like lasagna or you like pizza or you like spaghetti you can't eat pizza lasagna spaghetti or ice cream every meal of your entire life so that's why we have a multi-species pasture here on the stoney ridge farm really cool let's uh see what old wooly bully's got to do now man you wore your son this is your sunday that's your sunday overall i saw the other pair this what this is uh dad and mom's stepdad and mom samesies uh this is a 2000 model is that right 99 model f 357.3 stroke and in the back we got wooly bully and wooly bully was the same bull like i said that was here last year i don't know if he's in the front or the back there he is boy he's a big boy any pretty so we got to take wooly bully all the way across the farm here uh and we're gonna back up to a gate so there's a gate back in that very back corner you're gonna pull down there and you just kind of back down it's not a real st it's not as steep of a hill as this but you'll back down to that gate and i'll uh i'll have it open for you all right now so you guys know the sole purpose of having this bull on the farm is so that he can breed so he's here for a pretty fun purpose i guess he'll be out here again for three months with these cows and calves he won't bother the calves this bull is a very trusted bull he's the father of most of these calves that you see right here tell me about the bull it's the same boy i brought in last year right it is the same one sure enough and he said healthy babies for you oh yeah and healthy babies for me guys all the babies that you see out here from uh wooly bully is what we call them so uh you rounded them up two days ago one day ago or just happened today today all right good deal good deal well let's let him out and see what he does what's your prediction uh i'd say he's gonna go to doing business yeah business time all right let's let him out so the ladies are patiently waiting guys you ready that's not a lady just so you know um this is butthead hey bud head how you doing girl it's time ladies let me get these girls out of here here he comes get ready girls i'm excited he's a big boy amy it's a season for love ladies a season for love when you bring in a bull like this guys here's what you can expect he's already been in here and he's met these ladies before he bred pretty much every cow here last year um he's not a really large bull i don't want a great big monstrous bull in my herd i want to breed my animal size down to about this size here somewhere in the neighborhood of 950 to 1200 pounds something like that this is number 40. she's had a little bit of a problem with her foot i believe she sprained her ankle you okay girl yeah she's got a little limp but she's getting better so he's going for the shade the water is right up here and this is it i would expect wooly bully to start getting busy probably sometime in the next 35-45 minutes and this guarantees us the gestation period of our cows in other words our cow's gestation period is just like a woman a female woman human it's a nine-month gestation period okay so we breed them now and we can get our babies in april may and june right when the spring flush hits right when the grass is the best the best quality br grass grows the best quality milk and grows the best quality young calves awesome that's exactly what we did last year and we had awesome success except for we had one bull that i didn't expect to breed so we had one bull we didn't castrate earlier in the year and he bred back some of them so we had some young calves in february not what i wanted but it all worked out great awesome guys well i guess i owe you all lunch right the cow gets debris cow gets to breed and we get to eat so that's a good thing thank y'all to eat yeah absolutely i grew up in the country but had no interest in this really growing up and kind of grew into it and now barry is a huge help with me my mom's a huge help with
