setup for us i apologize for all that not sure exactly what's going on but we're trying to figure it out as best we can um i've got a couple guys ryan am i on like can you go on our youtube channel am watching right now and uh eager to hear what we have to share with you about season two and about 2020 and i want to give all that to you i just want to make sure that it's all uh good because i i'm normal we're not gonna have graphics for you we're not gonna have uh some of the bells and whistles uh my partner daryl is working very very hard to try to make this happen for you and we appreciate that but unfortunately it's just not gonna be quite as smooth and beautiful as it normally is so sorry about the weird lighting and all this but we're going to make this work so first of all if you getting to having all of season two completely financed so close it's getting so great so a couple weeks ago i went to the farm and the farm has a lot of significance not only for me but for many of you because the farm is where we filmed the special christmas short film which at the time was just intended for my church's christmas eve service i was coming off of a career failure the feature film that i just made and released in theaters nationwide with some of the biggest producers of producers in hollywood had uh failed at the box office and uh it was a disappointing thing uh significantly for me and i went very quickly from being a director with a bright future to a director with no future and uh i poured myself into this short film for my church's christmas eve service out on a farm uh my friend's farm in illinois and that was it felt like a big step down of course from having done a you know a major uh hollywood motion picture but i just knew that it wasn't my job to feed the 5000 it was only to provide the loaves and fish and my job was to just do whatever god had in front of me and that barn and that farm that spot that we turned into first century bethlehem and that we turned into a short film about the birth of christ and that little thing that grew into something so much bigger and was the catalyst to shattering the all-time crowdfunding record of over 10 million dollars from over 19 000 of you that finance season one of the chosen because of your investment and because of what came out of that little thing we were able to do season one of the chosen the thing that has brought you here this global thing that is now in every single country in the world it's been translated in literally over 50 languages with more constantly every week um this global thing that has been that has been growing faster than we can keep up with all started on a small farm in morengo illinois and so just a few weeks ago we were really in a holding pattern i didn't know what what was going to come next i didn't know if we were going to be able to film season 2 this year i didn't know uh how we were going to do it covid was creating all these complications that was making things very difficult for film production uh production crews and it's it's very expensive the testing protocols and the protocols that were coming out of hollywood and uh out of the the actors unions and whatnot it was like i don't even know how we're going to do this i don't know how we're going to be able to make a show like this that requires lots of extras it requires a lot of money i mean it's this is a bigger show excuse me that requires a large crew and um how are we gonna how are we gonna manage all this and um we also didn't have a location uh we didn't know exactly where we're going to film uh because we're not going back to the same spot from season one because obviously in season two it's a completely different location and we also we're gonna holding pattern on our investment round you know what first season we did an investment round we're going to be doing another one here shortly and uh sometime in the near future we're not exactly sure yet what yeah i'll talk about that in just a second but that was an holding pattern we were having trouble finding the right person to to get us to the next level for for the investment round that's a long story that i won't get into but we were in such a we were in freeze frame basically um we had the first four scripts written ready to go the actors were ready to go i mean everyone was excited to do season two you've been excited to do season two and just like in season one when we were filming um episode four the miracle of fish and four days before we filmed it we didn't have a boat we didn't have fish and we didn't have a lake and that's what i felt like in this situation is uh we were wanting to film this year but it just didn't look like it was possible and so uh and i didn't even know if it was the right decision we just don't know so i went to the farm to to pray and to sing and i did a video uh that many of you have seen it's on our youtube channel where it's called i'm in a tough spot and it was just me sharing my heart um and i think you could tell that i was a bit at my end because i i i feel like a great responsibility not only to god but i feel a responsibility to you and we feel a sense of urgency because of covet because of the social unrest we feel like the world needs more jesus right now and we feel a sense of urgency to get these uh seasons and episodes out to you as fast as possible and we couldn't do it and we didn't even know if it should be done and so so many of you uh have prayed i mean i remember when we did that video i felt like we were standing on the edge of of of the red sea and we couldn't tell if it was going to part or not and and then we had an opportunity for a possibility that would allow us to film in season two shut down um we we had gotten our hopes up and we heard right before i went to the farm we heard no it wasn't possible and so um i was like my goodness what is what is god doing here and so um but i want to tell you this this is absolutely true that it was almost to the minute that i posted that video and almost to the minute to the couple days before that i had recorded the video things started to open up and it was though as though god had been waiting for me and for us and some of my partners on this project to fully surrender and to say what has gotten us this far what has gotten us this far with the chosen it's been when we realized that it wasn't us it wasn't ours that we had to just focus on making sure that whatever loaves and fish we provided were the best that they could be and that the feeding of the 5000 was up to god and once we gave them to him and he deemed them worthy of acceptance that's when the transaction and we had done that we had done everything we could and there was nothing left to do except to listen and the words of that song that i quoted in that video i'm holding on to faith because i know you'll make a way and i don't always understand and i don't always get to get to you but i'll believe it i'll still believe it because you make mountains move and you've been faithful then and you'll be faithful now and that is why we we were able to surrender to that and the beautiful thing that ended up happening was doors started to come down doors started to open walls started to come down nose became yeses in a matter of of hours and the everything that was being held up released in like a week and so now i can tell you that we are green lit for season two and that we will be filming this fall that the first four episodes of season two at the very least will be filmed this fall and you know we were gonna we were talking about how to announce that and should we should we tell the media first and we just all realized no we need to tell you first you've been waiting you've you've been poured into this project and i wanted to give you that good news that um that that moment of humility and that moment of brokenness um was a beautiful moment even at the time even when i was standing there on that farm talking to you it was it was beautiful it was faithful it was it was god showing up and when the rain came in the middle of the video that was that was a metaphor because um god was waiting for me and one's waiting for us to stop to stop trying so hard to do more than what we were capable of because that's been the story of this project and so your loaves and fishes and your investment and your paying it forward and your buying of the merchandise and your prayers and all of that all of that has gotten us to this point and helped us get to this point but in that moment all that we had left was prayer and all that we had left was was was listening and when we that video came out thousands of you all over the world prayed and it made a difference and shame on me if i don't continue to learn that lesson if i don't remember if i if i don't remember what happened in that moment of just going to the farm going to the place where this all began and remembering how faithful god has been and he has been faithful exactly like he said um just even just in the last two weeks so we still got some t's to cross and some eyes to dot before i can give you all the details but we are greenlit and we are filming uh season two uh in 2020 at least the first half of it and that means that we will be able to get it out to you even faster we will announce an exact date sometime in the near future of one week when you'll be able to see season two we just don't know that right right yet but it's going to be significantly faster than it would have been it's going to be at least half a year earlier there was we were on a track to potentially not be able to release season 2 to you until perhaps easter of 2021 and now we know that we're going to be able to do it earlier and you deserve that and uh it's it's thrilling to be able to say that to you it's almost weird to be able to say those words out loud because i didn't know if i was going to be able to say those words so um so i just wanted to be able to share that with you and what does that mean um i also want to let you know that jonathan is uh going out to uh he's going to be on here in just a few minutes so we'll have him here in fact he's texting me now so anyway i'm sorry about that we're dealing with all this but um so uh what does that mean now that we are no well now we got to move fast uh the timing of this is now uh in in fast forward mode so we've got episodes one through four already written we are currently writing episodes five through eight i'm going to bring in ryan and tyler in just a few minutes to give you uh the updates on the scripts for five through eight and what that's going to look like what season two is going to look like um the other thing is in order to make this work in order to make this uh opportunity happen we're going to have to increase the budget of season 2 to account for covid it's going to be extraordinarily um someone's walking in right now so you can hide over here for just a second before we bring it off um so uh it's going to cost some money for the kind of testing in fact some of the things we plan to do are even more uh even even broader and more safe than even some of the restrictions because we really want to make sure that we can test effectively and that everyone who comes on the set at all we know uh is is uh negative you know it's tested negative and so to do that it's gonna it's gonna be expensive we've been talking to some of the top covered testing specialists in the world and uh so they're working with us they're excited about the show but it's going to be expensive and so we're going to have to increase the budget of season two um so think about that you know as you as you pay it forward um you know recognize that we may have to we may have to be spending a little bit more money uh so that we can do this in season two so if you feel so led uh to pay it forward because of that that's going to be helpful it's going to allow us to get to season two even uh it's not allow us to be able to pull it off we're doing this a little bit in faith um we're assuming that uh the payed forwards are going to continue to come through at the rate that they have been so that we can pull off pull this off and that we're going to be able to get what we need to do the effective testing and to keeping everyone uh safe because you can't you can't risk anything i mean um if there's one person that kind of gets sick on the set we have to shut everything down and that costs literally hundreds of thousands of dollars just like that and um and then it takes time to be able to start back up again and we just can't risk that that happening so uh so i hope you'll be considerate of that and then casting i just i'm in los angeles now because on tuesday i had a full day casting session where we were casting new roles for season two and uh boy i'm telling you uh we've got some amazing uh candidates and talent um so some of you i know probably are asking well how can i audition um if you're asking that question it's probably gonna be difficult because uh you know if you have an agent that they know where the breakdowns are and we're able to make that happen so uh but yeah it's uh already we're seeing some fantastic people and i'm really excited about some of the professionals that you're gonna be able to see in season two some of the roles that we have to fill um for season two um it's the team is building the disciples are building there's more being added to the team and uh it's it's uh it's gonna be fun and the talent that we're assembling to do that is gonna be fantastic and the writing um right now we are finished with episode six currently working on episodes seven and eight and i'm gonna bring in ryan and tyler here in just a moment in fact um why don't you guys come on in random tyler um you can stand here we want to practice social distancing we want to be respectful um and so i'm going to i'm going to start with ryan would you what did you guys agree ryan first all right so ryan's going to give you just a quick update on what he's working on and because i want to give you a just a real quick thing the three of us are going to be meeting at the end of august and we're going to be spending an entire week not by that point season two will be completely written but we're not only going to be planning season three we're going to be writing out and planning and outlining all the way through season seven we want to know where the next seasons are going because our goal our plan is to shoot seasons two through six sorry seasons two through seven in the next three and a half years we feel such a strong sense of urgency that this guy and tyler and myself are going to be writing almost non-stop back to back just for the next couple of years getting these seasons so that we can shoot them faster and release them as quickly as possible because we want you to get this out we want you to get this as fast as possible so ryan i'll step out of the way and you can uh you'll be talking right into there and let them know where they were this is a first for me so i'm i'm so low i don't have dallas to lean on hey everybody i'm ryan swanson uh one of the co-writers of the chosen um i'm so curious to know what people are curious about uh but we're gonna start uh planning seasons three through seven and if you've seen anything about what what i've talked about in the past or how dallas has talked about me i love this stuff i love planning out what a season looks like uh i feel like that's my my sweet spot so uh really excited and and this year we've we've got not only the three of us but we've we've actually got some um some some some help um so that's going to be uh people who are coming in who who dallas trusts to uh just just give us options you know and we're all about like finding those moments through scripture that uh that that we can really make emotionally um resonant for for our audience and and for to take our characters on a journey so we're super excited about that planning phase and i can tell you that scripts five through eight are going uh beautifully um taoi's gonna talk a little bit specifically about what those uh episodes are looking like for him but i can just tell you that i'm having a blast writing them every day is exploration and we're going to places that i think all of us find super emotional and that's worked in the past uh translated to something that's emotional for you all so thank you for all your support thank you for um the the well wishes they matter they keep us going and just thanks for uh being with us through all this all right tyler i'm up i'm up i'm next hi guys um tyler thompson here co-writer of the chosen good to see you uh i'm normally not in la i live in chicago but this summer i've been sort of like drifting the american west uh doing my riding i was in colorado for for a while riding in the mountains riding in the desert now i'm riding in the uh very chilly and comfortable hills of laurel canyon so it's going really well i'm currently working on um episode eight which is the final episode of season two so there's a lot going on but the main thing that's going on is there's a character who is just wondering if there could be something more out there whose life is on one trajectory but is just thinking like there's got to be and it's hoping that maybe there could be he could be a part of something uh bigger and better and more meaningful than what he's currently doing there's a great line um in a mary oliver poem that that says uh tell me what it is you plan to do with your one wild and precious life and this character is asking that question and i think a lot of people have been there and the other thing that's going on in the final episode of the season is the disciples are really struggling um with forgiveness and with like a lot of painful things that have happened um throughout the course of season two i think a lot of times you know when somebody um chooses to follow this rabbi sometimes it is like a like a flip the switch overnight change and other times it's less like uh flipping on a light switch in a dark room and more like a sunrise and i think anyone who's ever watched a sunrise knows that sometimes the sun can go behind the clouds or there can be storms and so there's a lot of pain um in especially episodes five through eight and some people make some choices that the disciples really struggle with so i sent dallas the script for seven and i warned him i was like everybody's in a bad mood and i don't know if he believed me but then when he read it and we got on a call he was like yeah these people are they're in rough shape so um i know that doesn't sound uh super uplifting but i promise it is emotional and powerful and it will pay off and we're just grateful jonathan and i as you know have been doing this for several years actually we were doing short films um back in the day about the life of christ and now we get to do this show together and i'm curious to know and i think i know everyone else says how have you been doing um in the last few months um you know just during the all the coveted stuff what has been your kind of uh you know what what has sustained you over this time especially living in l.a which has been more locked down than than most but how where what's been going on for you uh yeah you know thank god i've been keeping healthy um i've been i've been quarantining and isolating and um just really doing a lot of praying i started at the beginning quarantine i i started a prayer hour online that persisted for about three months in one form or another between facebook and instagram and then that became a real way to sort of um connect with the community and to sort of ease anxiety and just the community communal anxiety that i think many people were feeling um you know i've been able to get a little bit of work in some special projects projects coming down the pike that i'm going to probably be announcing in the next couple of weeks um so that's been that's been good and then uh just anxiously awaiting the news today's news so does that affect you much i mean like oh that's right because you're gonna be in season two uh i hope so uh you haven't read the script yes you don't know no i haven't yes am i in season two yeah you do show up in season two yeah um yeah a little bit um well because people don't know because the scene that we read on zoom uh the other day didn't you know that yeah yeah yeah we bring you out we bring out uh for the for uh the timelines the endings of all the episodes keeping up with tradition um so we are getting uh questions uh and some of the people have been asking questions earlier in the day um so this is from catherine minnie who's one of the biggest supporters of the chosen um for both dallas and jonathan what story from the gospels are you looking forward to filming acting directing the most and why saying lots of prayers and love your way hope to get a chance to meet you both on set for the sermon on the mount i'll mention i'll reference that in just a second but first of all what uh story from the gospels are you looking most forward to filming i uh i would love if we can hit john 11 25 which is the whole story about lazarus i'd love yeah we're not doing that one so another one great to see you guys um no i'm kidding we are doing that for me um you know exploring the circumstances that went into the three shortest words in the bible and jesus wept um going into uh the the backstory or the potential to develop the story behind what led him to be so affected by his relationship with lazarus and for lazarus to die is something that i'm really excited to explore and then also flipping tables in the marketplace with the uh pharisees and stuff um that's that's something you don't get they're saying they want you to look closer to them uh yeah so between i think lazarus and um raising lazarus and uh lazarus relationship is really interesting to me and then also just seeing other colors of jesus that we don't get to see very often which is you know the holy anger i think that god uh i think occasionally displays and with jesus i mean it's always righteous it's never misplaced or uh unfounded um on anything other than righteousness so that as an actor would be fun for me to explore yeah and we we hint at some of those things now because we don't want some of these moments to feel like they come completely out of the blue and so you see a little bit of jesus emotion in season one in season two you start to see a little bit of jesus's frustration or anger or even anger but we also want to save some of that for some of these bigger moments and that's the whole point of the show is that we have the time to develop it and so when we get to to the scene with lazarus you can be assured that by that moment we will have effectively or hopefully effectively but set up who these people are and we know that these miracles that we portray are rarely just about the the the fact that there's a miracle happening it's about what is this doing in the life of the person who's involved um which really earns those moments then right absolutely it makes it makes those moments even more powerful judy bennett another huge supporter of the show um how does jonathan get into character oh that's a lovely question you don't want to know uh yeah well the the main thing is um prayer it's uh lots and lots of prayer and um remembering that i i have to get out of the way as much as i can to allow the holy spirit to kind of work as uh and just be a channel for the holy spirit to be able to i think uh elevate whatever um emotional elements are are already within me to the point where it becomes something beyond myself so um that's that's the short answer so well and i think also part of it is recognizing you can't be jesus this isn't some sort of method acting where you're gonna i'm gonna be jesus for the next two hours um recognizing that all we can do is explore the humanity knowing that the things he's doing right are are divine yeah the the divinity i mean for me there's i i didn't even address it because it's so far off of my radar there's no way that i know could could attempt to portray what it's like to be divine or or godly in any way the best i can do is to bring um the most a perfected version of my humanity that i can to bring forward and and hope that that coupled with the the holy spirit creates a performance that that people receive in a way that's beyond just the human nature of me jonathan the actor but yeah you can't there's no way to to try to play the divine aspect of jesus it's just not possible well on that note i'm gonna uh i will step back just a bit and let you move forward a bit because i wanted you to read something we actually got this note just the other day and it talks about um the insight into jesus and how your performance i believe has generated reactions like this or helps generate reactions like this so you will need to scroll down i enlarged it for you because i know you struggle to see um this first part thank you for giving me a new new insight about jesus and then uh struggle to see how dare you sir so this is a a note that we received just just the other day and i thought it would be great for jonathan to read it he hasn't read this before but i thought you'd appreciate it um what's this uh jesus what's the word after jesus as uh and father okay thank you for giving me a new insight about jesus and father should i say their name um just say the first name okay i'm anita from india kerala to be specific in india fathers would never hug their daughters after the age of ten they will not even keep a friendship with their daughters we were taught from church that our father in heaven will always behave to us like our own daddy does now that had always made me step away from god because if he is going to be like my daddy who is very short-tempered and considers me wrong in whatever i do then i won't really love god i had this idea about jesus that he is very short-tempered easily irritable less forgiving one who doesn't enjoy funny moments of life music and even dance i thought he would love the ones who would pray more and would live a stain-free life but the way you had portrayed jesus made me realize that when he chose me for his love i will never attempt to be on the wrong road i could finally understand the meaning of what jacob had said we didn't choose him to love he chose us to love i had been living rebellious towards god because of the fake image about god but now whatever happens in my life i know that he is there with me thank you for highlighting the fact that people like matthew simon mary magdalene are also chosen ones i don't have asperger's syndrome but i do suffer from many of its symptoms to complete a day i take much much pain and struggles i spent most of the nights crying and make desperate plans on how to behave and to become a normal person which i could never do but now i feel light and happier as if because if god has created me to be who i am then why should i care if others are judgmental about me and mock the way i behave i know jesus is happy with the way i am and loves me like he loved matthew who had stayed original mr dallas you do really have god's signature within you that's beautiful and she says i felt god so original which is just an interesting way of of saying that but um i wanted you to hear that because again when she talks about and i think this is true for so many of you the image of christ that they had uh has been intruded upon in so many different ways growing up but based on whether it was art or whether it was a wrong view of christ and of god the father because of their own relationships or because of a church they attended or because they didn't have any exposure to it and what you're doing by literally making this show happen with your investments and with your pay it forwards and with anything that you do that contributes financially or prayerfully to the show and allowing it to happen results in things like this and um and and i know this is i know i can say this is that you've felt that so many times where the day wasn't going right you didn't feel like maybe you were up for the task for that day but the prayers and the and i think sometimes even the knowledge of how this is impacting people sustains us yeah yeah i mean even just especially when we'd have investors on set that uh you know contributed and got a chance to see the process up close and to perform certain scenes that had uh particularly emotional impacts and then to kind of see them in person like reacting to the scene especially like when the healing of the leper you know it was just silence and people had like tears in their eyes and and you look at that and you're like wow this is this is really powerful stuff like god is doing such a work in in through us through the script through the show um it's uh it's just it's just been full of so many graces for for myself and and for you i know so yeah it's been a blessing and thank you thank you for that um for helping make that happen jonathan and i were together just a couple hours ago we were recording some dvd commentary for we're doing a special edition season 1 dvd set that's going to be coming out sometime by the end of the year so stay tuned for that but it's going to have a whole bunch of extras and whatnot uh that we can't wait to to to debut for you including the commentary that we were just recording we actually just watched see episode three uh for the first time in a while yeah after season 1 and it was good to kind of remind us i think heading into filming of season two uh of just what uh of reminding of of the characters that that we've been portraying and and who we do this for so anyway thank you so much thank you brother for being here good to see season two you know we're some of this is making it up as we go along and just waiting to hear from god we're doing this outside the system we don't have some big check that was written by a studio that can just make it easy to green light because we know exactly what's going to come as you've seen just in the last six months we had no idea a lot of this was going to come the social unrest the uh the covid situation that makes us even more urgent to get this out to you as soon as possible seasons two season three all the way through season seven we're going to be writing them back to back so that we can be filming them back to back as much as possible and that's one of the cool things is we're also um looking right now for a long term home and we are very close we've narrowed it down to just a couple of options for where we're going to be building some sets and some some locations you if you have a spot in mind no need to send it anymore we have narrowed that down uh and we'll be able to announce that sometime in the near future as well of where we'll be able to uh you know actually start to build some of our own stuff and uh and then by doing that we'll be able to film seasons back to back and uh be able to that not only saves a lot of money but it also means that of course you can get this quicker we just feel such a strong sense of urgency and i know you do too i know you want it quicker we want to give it to you quicker and we wanted to give it to the world quicker in every country totally free each season and so you're a big part of that so please keep it up and they plan to film the next 6 seasons within 5 years? that's quite ambitious especially since they need to crowdfund each season. hope that the series catch people's attention and they gain financial windfall that secure their funding for multiple seasons.
