university dr rodney rogers [Music] thank you professor ziegler so good morning spring 2022 graduates parents families spouses partners friends and guests of bowling green state university today we are here to celebrate a very momentous occasion in the lives of 2579 graduates and it is my privilege to begin today's address by recognizing those who provide the leadership of bowling green state university so first let me introduce the platform party and as i announced the names uh i would ask them to please stand remain standing and i ask you to hold your applause until the end members of the board of trustees chair and alumnus david o'brien vice chair and alumna marilyn eisley trustee and alumna willa ebersole undergraduate student trustee josh otton graduate student trustee este miller commencement speaker and former chair of the board of trustees general betty montgomery joe whitehead provost and senior vice president for academic and student affairs robin miller faculty senate representative and i would also like to introduce the deans of our academic colleges some of whom have been leading their participating colleges into the ceremony ray braun dean of the allen w and carol m schmidt horse college of business jim cesla dean of the college of health and human services linda lewandowski dean of the university of toledo college of nursing bill mathis dean of the college of musical arts simon morgan russell dean of the honors college sarah bushong dean of university libraries and vice provost for faculty affairs please join me in giving them a round of applause so great universities are comprised of great faculty they are at the heart of our academic mission their teaching skills research creative activities academic expertise and involvement in our students education are the hallmarks of a bowling green experience and so i ask our faculty and staff members that are here today would you please stand and be recognized thank you and i'm going off script here but i also want to make sure we thank uh all of the staff that have been planning this activity for months to make sure that we everything runs smoothly so a round of applause for wbgu and all of our staff members please so we certainly recognize that the past nearly two years have been quite a journey this global pandemic has taught us so much however seeing our graduates in front of us today i am reminded of the progress the purpose of why we kept at it never giving up yes we are still navigating covid19 but despite all of the significant challenges we found a way forward not just as individuals but as a community and as a university and i just want to start off with a simple message to our spring 22 graduates faculty and staff members you did it against the odds you found a way forward together we should be so proud of what we have accomplished to move forward [Music] the power [Music] [Music] um to show people that we care about one another [Music] [Applause] [Music] so i urge you to make a difference in this campus [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] i cannot wait to see when you accomplish this [Music] so that roller coaster uh that's over on east campus right you've seen it okay maybe that's not here so as we begin our ceremony i do want to share a few additional statistics and facts about our spring 22 graduates so i'm pleased to report to you that our graduates and their classmates spent a great deal of time studying and doing research at the library in fact i've been told that you have downloaded two million eight hundred and sixty two thousand seven hundred and thirty one research articles and there were 144 238 visits to the learning commons now we had asked about trying to calculate the the number of zoom and microsoft teams meetings we honestly did try to figure that out okay but we gave up there were way too many but according to our chief information officer you consumed 325 987 thousands of terabytes of data on the wi-fi that's a lot um i wonder how much of that was netflix or hulu or disney huh so studying takes fuel we understand that and bgsu dining tells me our graduates ate a lot over the past four years our students consumed 285 638 pizzas and i might add that more than 2.3 million hours were also spent in the rec center so i wonder if there's a correlation there right so we are celebrating the accomplishments of a great group of graduates this weekend as a public university for the public good you have created public good by recognizing the importance of paying it forward and those involved in student life and our signature co-curricular activities average 94 701 community service hours each year and in this past year alone our students raised more than a half a million dollars forced to support non-profit organizations pretty impressive the value of a bowling green degree you're about to receive has never been higher we continue to be ranked as a top-tier university by u.s news and world report and according to the wall street journal for the third year in a row our students overwhelmingly said they would choose their university our university again ranking us as the number one public university in the midwest tied for number one in the united states thank you you know what bowling green we know that our students have world-class opportunities here and we empower them we hope we have empowered you to create public good and that's more than just words it is our promise and this graduating class embodies that promise as i mentioned in total there are 2 579 degrees we are celebrating this weekend 14 percent of our graduates are students of color 61 percent are women there are 69 international students representing 26 countries across the globe we have an 18 year old receiving an undergraduate degree and we have a 67 year old receiving a bachelor's degree a 26 year old receiving a doctoral degree and a 65 year old receiving a master's degree so as you can see our graduates include both the young and the young at heart you are diverse you come from small towns suburbs big cities you are from different parts of ohio the united states and from all over the world some of you may have completed your degree completely online and i know that this may be the first time you've been on campus and you're meeting your colleagues for the first time however each of you have one thing in common you all found a university where you can belong you found your place at bowling green in the classroom or in the laboratories in residence halls in clubs student organizations greek life or on the athletic fields you made bowling green your community and your home and as a falcon we hope that you have learned to think beyond the discoveries made by others but you are empowered to use your imagination to shape our future to pursue new levels of excellence you have the knowledge and the tools to always find a way forward in recognition of these many accomplishments i'm now will ask a number of students to please stand so many of you have grown through experiential learning and co-curricular activities so if you have studied abroad participated in a learning community completed an internship or co-op got involved in service learning conducted undergraduate research taking part in an opportunity that provided you leadership education such as student organization involvement academic honoraries advisory boards athletics residence education student government would you please stand and be recognized and that is why the wall street journal ranked us number three in the nation for student engagement what you see here so please be seated and thank you for your involvement and finally i would like to recognize the heroic service of our united states veterans and active members of the armed forces who are graduating today would you please stand and be recognized thank you for your service earning your degree today places you in a very select group of people less than seven percent of the world's population has a bachelor's degree or higher you have earned it but with your degree comes an immense responsibility you see not only have you invested in your education not only has your family and friends invested in your education but by attending a public university the citizens the residents and the taxpayers of the state of ohio and the nation have invested in you we are counting on you now not one of us has gotten to where we are without the support of others and for our graduates i am sure a lot of people have helped you during your time at bowling green so in the spirit of our 1987 commencement speaker mr fred rogers mr rogers was here in 1987 so i'm going to ask as he did to take just 10 seconds of your time just 10 seconds to think about all of the people who have helped you all the people that have helped you get to this point who supported you who were in your corner 10 seconds okay 10 seconds i'll watch the time thank you i could imagine the people you thought about that have made a difference in your life some of them may be with us today and so it is my pleasure to honor them so with the parents spouses partners children grandparents family members friends and anyone else who helped these graduates would you please stand and be recognized thank you so in closing and before i invite our provost and senior vice president for academic and student affairs dr joe whitehead to the podium to introduce our commencement speaker i'd like to speak directly to the graduates and i hope you'll allow me a few moments to share some parting advice so soon you will be graduates of bowling green state university and we want you to go out and reinforce and create public good and that starts with each of us as individuals and so i would ask you not to forget these three things one be curious always be curious ask questions before you judge others make sure you collaborate and support and learn from diverse peer peers but make sure you never ever stop learning and you do that by being curious asking questions not judging asking questions so be curious two at the same time we want you to be bold be bold don't be afraid to tackle messy challenges you're going to have to continue to work hard but the world needs more problem solvers and doers make sure you balance that though with having some fun but be bold take risks so be curious be bold and finally don't forget to be kind the world needs more kindness curious bold kind if you do these things you will absolutely do well but you will also do good congratulations bgsu graduates thank you president rogers good morning everyone a public servant a political trailblazer ohio's advocate today's speaker betty montgomery is a proud bgsu alumna early earning a bachelor of arts in english in 1970 montgomery is an attorney at law and she was ohio's first woman attorney general and first woman auditor of the state where she broke the glass ceiling in an era where there were only several leadership positions held by women across the country today she specializes in matters before the state attorney's general federal communications commission and federal trade commission focusing her practice on helping clients understand and meet their regulatory compliance obligations as attorney general montgomery dramatically increased state support for local law enforcement and rebuilt all ohio's crime labs introducing dna testing and 21st century technology to ohio she has emerged as earned a national reputation for a focus on protecting consumers betty montgomery is a former chair of all in green state university's board of trustees during her time on the board bgsu experienced strong growth of enrollment record fundraising and physical rebirth of facilities along with strategic gains in student success a public servant a political trailblazer ohio's advocate but most importantly a bgsu falcon well good morning to you all now one of the things i have to reassure you is i know as a speaker that particularly the graduation the most important thing you need to hear from me is this is going to be short i want to thank dr rogers uh who is probably one of the most creative and talented leaders i have had the occasion to work with in all these years as you have all learned that you don't have to have the best football team in the world to have a wonderful university but you do have the best leader and i want to thank the faculty that wouldn't have happened without you the staff who works tireless and you the students we're so proud of you and parents you chose correctly you chose bowling green state university you know your journey here at bowling green you folks here in front of me has been unusual at best and challenging at worst the pandemic made your bgsu experience include masks lockdowns distance learning and your social activities a very important part of the college experience were certainly curtailed and much of what you look forward to in college was not permitted but this has helped shape you this has tested you and let's take a look back in history something a bgsu education and of course i'm a liberal arts major so i have a great pride in letting all of you know that learning about your past helps you shape you for your future and it teaches bowling green has taught you to do things to gather perspective to gather facts to understand context and to know that beyond the immediate challenges you face is your future you are not alone in facing challenges and you're not alone in disappointment i want you to look back at what your parents experienced your parents experienced 9 11 the war in iraq afghanistan terrorist threats and acts that rocked their sense of security look at what your grandparents faced my generation in high school we saw a president assassinated i can still remember sitting on that sunday morning after the death of president kennedy watching his murderer be killed on national television we experienced the tragic assassination of martin luther king robert kennedy the vietnam war the countless marches protesting it was a very turbulent time look back at what your great-grandparents experienced the greatest generation the depression world war ii the nuclear age and it's constantly looming threat the cold war and finally look at what your great great grandparents lived through as we in america move from the 19th century to the 20th century as we move from the agrarian society to an industrial society as all of those things that your great great grandparents knew and understood and cherished changed in what it seemed like a heartbeat and what did they experience world war one the spanish flu epidemic women's rights prohibition the industrialization that moved so many people from the fields to the cities yet we have survived and we have thrived my point to you today is that you will face many challenges in your lives and you probably already have you will walk with change as your constant companion your entire life how you respond to that reveals your character and this brings to me what i hope if you hear nothing else you hear today from me who you are matters the values you hold and defend matters your willingness to take the hard road despite what your other friends and families may take or or society may take matters your willingness to recognize that compromise is appropriate as long as you're not compromised and democracy demands it on my desk is a document that means a lot to me i look at every day and while it may seem hackneyed to some of you for me it's a guidepost watch your thoughts they become words watch your words they become actions watch your actions they become habits and watch your habits they become character and watch your character because it becomes your destiny in this age of information too much information and disinformation don't take the easy way take the time use your education think your bgsu education and your values have taught you to respond to life and its challenges with civility with kindness with thoughtfulness it will allow you to hear to question to decide and not to just be led blindly but to discern i'm not telling you anything you don't know already you are on the threshold of your future and in some instances it's pretty frightening you have so many choices you have so many opportunities i can remember sitting in this audience being so afraid because there were so many choices what if i made the wrong choice i would ruin my life that's a 20 20 year old 22 year old thinking don't be afraid to risk too often we put ourselves in a box oh i couldn't do that oh that i i i just not made for that that would be too much and i could fail too often we allow other people to put us in a box you can't do that who do you think you are sitting in a meeting room in austin earlier this week i was reminded as i was sitting in this windowless box listening to a speaker that i was a prisoner of these walls yet as i walked out of that room into the light into the breeze into an endless horizon and i saw many paths and many destinations get outside of the box that you've devised for yourself and you've allowed other people to put you in experience the beauty of this world risk and by the way failure is not fatal i am a perfect example on a very public stage of not always being perfect fatal failure is not future is not fatal failure is often just a stepping stone it's a learning experience and oftentimes it leads to more opportunities i would ask you about all things look up from your computers look up from your telephones look at each other talk to each other experience your world circling back how you behave may when you win or lose reflect your character i know i haven't quoted and i've said this to the faculty last evening i didn't quote aristotle and i haven't quoted plato or socrates in this speech because i just wanted to have a conversation with you all take the life lessons that you've learned here at bgsu bgsu has given you such opportunities and it's a launching pad for you parents students you made the right choice coming here bgsu represents the values we believe in and we hope that you seek to emulate bgsu takes its mission very seriously it is a public university for the public good i think a quote that dr rogers came up with it seeks to shape good citizens who are informed and engaged our democracy demands this every generation helps shape the world we live in democracy is a fragile experiment it demands engagement it demands thinking it demands tolerance if you don't engage i can assure you and my life experience and your life experience can assure you if you don't engage somebody else will engage and you may not like their values and you may not like their decisions so get in there and get involved make it better you know our founders knew that we weren't perfect hence in that dramatic document said that we are aspiring to make it a more perfect union he'll make it help make it a better union a more perfect union bgsu has set the table for you and has given you a feast go forward grasp your future and congratulations graduates of bgsu thank you general montgomery for your remarks advice and your challenge to each of our graduates public servant political trailblazer ohio's advocate general betty montgomery shares something unique with each of our graduates today she started right where you are today she shares a bgsu bond with you a bond that you are going to find with another 192 000 alumni spread across the world so now i'd like to invite provost joe whitehead to present our students for candidates for
