sponsoring this video and let's jump into the breakdown episode 401 smoke the season of course starts out with a gene scene as we get another complete banger from the ink spots my echo my shadow and me is very symbolic in regards to jean's situation and story we pick up right where the season 3 gene scene left off with gene passed out on the ground getting carried away by paramedics gene's been trying to stay very low key under his new identity which makes passing out such a huge deal due to having all eyes on him with having to go to the hospital he's told it's a false alarm passing out from a panic attack as gene tries to leave the receptionist has troubles with his social security number creating anxiety that gene will get caught this too turns out to be a false alarm with the receptionist mistaking an o for a zero i also love the way the receptionist says mr jacobs gene gets in a cab thinking he's in the clear but then realizes that the driver is giving him a menacing stare gene notices the albuquerque isotope air freshener in the cab and he freaks out and asks to just get out he walks away pretending to tie his shoe while looking over his shoulder and then turns the corner it's ironic how gene was trying to escape the receptionist possibly catching him by wanting to go to the taxi when the taxi ended up being the real trouble awaiting him after two false alarms gene is met with a third scare gene's paranoia may be his downfall but he has good reason to constantly be looking over his shoulder the wicked flea win no man pursueth but is that really the case here the gene cliffhanger for this season sprung the debate of if the cab driver really did recognize him or not we'll discuss that more in the season 5 and 6 tier list back in the current timeline we see the effect of ashes flying on screen with the sound of a smoldering fire as we pan onto jimmy and kim in bed foreshadowing the tragedy that they're about to become aware of jimmy and kim go about their morning until getting a phone call from howard informing them of chuck's fate they're told that chuck died in a house fire and so they rush over it's crazy how this is how some traumatic moments happen in our lives you're just going about your day like any other until it hits you like a ton of bricks they arrive just as chuck's body is taken away and jimmy stares at chuck's burnt down house before sitting down at the same bench that we saw him sit on with chuck in episode 109 when chuck was first starting to feel better the score that plays here is just as amazing as the score that played when chuck destroyed his house in episode 310 absolutely love dave porter's soundtrack jim even looks at the same electrical box on the telephone pole that was shown in the 109 scene thinking about chuck's condition kim comes over telling jimmy that the fire started in the living room due to a lantern falling over along with saying how chuck died due to smoke inhalation so he didn't feel pain jimmy doesn't believe that saying how of course that's what they'll tell him to make him not feel as bad jimmy says that he saw chuck just five days ago and that chuck was completely fine with his lights on and electronics on jimmy says how all of chuck's electronics were thrown out in the backyard and that chuck did that jimmy also says something must have happened since he saw him and that chuck relapsed but kim just tells them that they need to go home back at home kim gives jimmy the phone with howard on the line who wants to run by chuck's obituary in the newspaper with him after listening to howard recited for a while jimmy hands the phone off back to kim who howard is surprised to hear when he's finished kim says it sounds great with jimmy clearly still in shock not wanting to listen to all of chuck's accomplishments jimmy and kim have shots of zephyr and nejo but jimmy sits on the couch all night with kim eventually falling asleep beside him we then jump to chuck's funeral with the piano song playing in the background being the same one that chuck was playing on piano in season two with rebecca's name on the sheet paper [Music] i love this song because of the show and this was a nice touch although there's barely any speaking roles we see a ton of major characters give jimmy condolences such as cliff and rich and a handful of other hhm attorneys rebecca is also there crying with howard although neither of them have speaking roles i love how they got so many actors to be here for this scene even though they're just minor appearances it really adds to the world building after the wedding jimmy and kim find howard waiting for them back home howard tells them that chuck's death wasn't an accident and that he purposely unalived himself as chuck knew how to properly handle the lanterns howard admits that they had a disagreement and that he forced chuck out of hhm howard says in passing how issues with their malpractice insurance was the final straw and jimmy asks him to elaborate since the beginning of the episode jimmy was wondering what happened and now he has the answer since he messed with chuck's insurance at the end of episode 307 it caused howard and chuck to fight resulting in chuck leaving hhm causing chuck to relapse chuck told jimmy not to have regret or remorse for when he hurts people so that's exactly what jimmy does here in regards to chuck's death this is the start of jimmy compartmentalizing chuck's death which continues not only for the rest of the season but the rest of the show as a whole the final moments of this episode are very emotional with howard breaking down over guilt allowed jimmy telling him how that's your cross to bear instead of sympathizing with him or even admitting the truth about the insurance neither howard nor kim know what jimmy did to mess with hhm's insurance only jimmy and he keeps it to himself hiding his guilt and letting howard feel bad instead of him it's so messed up how jimmy pushes the guilt onto howard as this affects howard's character for the rest of the series well howard i guess that's your cross to bear howard's face as jimmy tells him it's his cross to bear is just so heartbreaking i love this incredibly shocking moment that really makes me sympathize with howard for the rest of the show the episode ends with jimmy standing up and casually walking over to the kitchen as he cheerfully tells them that he's making coffee asking them if they want any along with whistling while he feeds his goldfish it's just crazy how jimmy soullessly pushes blame onto howard for chuck's death along with cheerfully whistling after this huge juxtaposition from the depressing mood set by howard admitting his guilt along with the aftermath of chuck's death in general spoilers for breaking bad season 5 here but jimmy whistling reminds me of walt whistling and breaking bad while jesse is so distraught from the kid that todd killed in breaking bad season 5. [Music] [Music] although walt and jimmy whistle for different reasons both moments are equally uncomfortable in the most brilliant way on the cartel side of the episode we see mike quit his tollbooth job as he won't be needing it anymore due to gus laundering his money through madrigal mike then visits probably the 10th caylee clone at this point along with stacey mike gets home and finds his first magical check in the mail for just over 10 thousand dollars but after sitting forward at home he calls in to learn magical's address meanwhile we jump back to watching the same scene again from 310 with hector being put into the ambulance with nacho giving the paramedics hector's pills along with implying that gus is onto nacho for what he did gus says nothing to nacho and walks away calling bulsa nacho tries to casually walk over to throw out his phony pills into a drain but gets interrupted by gus telling him that bulsa wants to see him gus and nacho meet arturo and bolsa bolsada los poyos warehouse and nacho introduces himself to bolsa as ignacio bulsa says that although hector had a stroke salamanca territory still stands bolsa adds that collections will continue but must be exact and that they need to stop anyone who crosses the line along with saying how they have a delivery the following night nacho and arturo leave and bolsa asks gus of his opinion gus says that someone will make a move against the salamancas which brings war chaos along with the dea nacho dumps his pills over the bridge into the water but victor was following him with a tracker gus already had a hunch but now they know for sure that nacho was responsible for hector's stroke we follow a magical employee for a while as he fixes his son's bike then realizes that his car's dead along with his key card missing this is because mike stole it and sabotaged his car to get into magical we get a hilarious montage of mike going around magical bossing around employees in order to make his fake security consultant job alibi more realistic mike returns the key card he stole to the employee we saw earlier but wants to speak to his manager admitting that he waltz through security with someone else's id along with a long list of security flaws you got duplicate routing numbers on cargo surveillance camera blind spots on the north and the east side of the floor inventory documents that are going into the trash instead of being shredded not to mention loading equipment being driven at unsafe speeds and crews wait disregarding who are you exactly when the manager doesn't recognize him mike tells him to call lydia this episode gets an a tier i think the show did a great job with the chuck aftermath and i love the heartbreaking scene between howard kim and jimmy at the end of the episode episode 402 breathe after the title sequence we get a close up of kim's orange juicer which has a greater significance in season 5. jimmy is loudly using it cheerfully making breakfast jimmy says he has job interviews lined up but kim tells jimmy that he can take some time off jimmy says that he doesn't want unemployment hanging over his head and heads out stating that he won't go to a meeting involving chuck and that howard will call if there's anything important this is jimmy trying to keep himself busy so he's not alone with his thoughts jimmy arrives at a photocopy store for an interview and it all goes quite well but he doesn't take the job due to the owners coming across as complete suckers actually did an entire video on this topic like three years ago when season four was first airing jimmy also notices their old collection of hummel figures that they said that they are gonna eventually throw out which comes into play in a future episode kim takes a cab to hhm in order to collect what's left for jimmy and chuck's will as kim enters howard's office he's just finishing up with rebecca who was clearly given more than jimmy kim is told that jimmy was left five thousand dollars and kim says that chuck left jimmy this much due to wanting to cut him out of his well but giving him just barely enough so it doesn't get contested showing that he wasn't forgotten howard offers jaime a chance to collect any sentimental belongings from chuck's house before the property becomes liquidated but kim says that jimmy doesn't want anything howard then says that he wants jimmy to be on a scholarship committee board and kim says that she'll let him know kim asked to speak with howard alone so rebecca lee's kim starts freaking out at howard asking him what he was thinking telling jimmy everything about chuck right after chuck's funeral at the end of the last episode kim is unaware that jimmy caused the insurance issue and thinks that howard just said that to jimmy to feel better about being so guilty kim screams at howard for offering jimmy to scavenge around the remains of where chuck burned alive screaming showing that even kim believes that chuck had a painful death opposite to what she tried telling jimmy at the beginning of episode 401 kim also tells howard that chuck would have never wanted jimmy to be on the scholarship committee board in a million years making that offer sound hollow kim then calls chuck's final letter to jimmy one final screw you little brother from the grave sarcastically calling everything that is so so fair over and over again although i'm frustrated with kim in this scene for yelling at howard i do love ray seahorn's brilliant acting in this scene every good act that howard tries to do towards jimmy and kim to make things better in regards to chuck's death is taken the wrong way and thrown back at him this is very infuriating and once again makes me really sympathize with howard i discuss this scene more in depth during my why jimmy and kim haight howard video that i'll have linked at the end of this video but just be aware that that video has huge spoilers for seasons 5 and 6 as well later that night jimmy meets cam back at the apartment with takeout kim hides chuck's letter from jimmy not wanting to ruin his seemingly good mood jimmy says that the job search went well but he turned down one due to it not feeling right and that he'll call back the others i love kim's metaphor for getting back to work being getting back on the horse considering mesa verde's logo kim and jimmy then partake in some pre netflix and netflix and chill but that night jimmy's unable to sleep jimmy gets out of bed to look at the price for the hummel figures online and then tries calling mike but he doesn't answer on the cartel side the episode starts with hector in the hospital as tyrus and gus's mexican doctor secretly check in on hector with gus waiting outside gus's doctor tells him that hector is no longer in a coma but that he's unresponsive the doctor says that this is what hector deserves but god states that he decides what hector deserves gus calls this unacceptable as he wants hector to be aware that he's suffering we see nacho's father opening up his shop with nacho there waiting to tell him that hector won't be bothering him anymore nacho's father grabs hector's dirty money for a nacho to take not even being able to look at him as nacho leaves his father asks if it's over for him too to which nacho says that he's working on it while out at the park with kaylee mike gets a phone call requesting that he has a meeting with lydia once he meets her she wants an explanation as to why mike stole a key card to sneak into magical and mike says that showing his face in her warehouse makes for a better cover story lydia explains that this is meant to be a paper transaction and that what he did actually raises the threat of exposure mike argues that it lowers the threat as there's a face to the name that's on the check mike stubbornly wants to go to all eight magical terminals in the southwest but lydia just walks out after telling him that he has gus friends respect and that he should try to keep it the salamanca twins then visit hector during the day and get introduced to dr maureen brookner a specialist in rehabilitation from john hopkins she's going to help hector due to a mysterious and generous grant dr brickner introduces herself to the salamanca twins and is fluent in spanish she tells them that she wants to stimulate hector's brain to teach it to rewrite itself nacho and arturo arrive to visit hector surprised that the twins are there arturo says don't worry we're still running things as he has obviously gotten a little cocky as they walk into the room the doctor tells them that speaking to hector may help with his rehabilitation so the twins intimidate nacho and arturo into speaking to him this is quite a purposely awkward scene that shows how nacho and arturo are definitely not in charge as we'll come to see when one salamanca is out of the picture another one takes its place gus gets a phone call from lydia while sweeping the los poyo's parking lot and she asks to meet since she's in town lydia tells gus about mike being stubborn but gus assures lydia that mike is reliable lydia pushes but gus backs up mike becoming frustrated with lydia's complaints tyrus updates gus on hector in his situation and that he hasn't had any improvements yet it's also implied that gus was the one to hire the specialist for hector gus arranges a meeting between victor and tyrus arturo and nacho arrived to pick up more drugs that night and while walking in arturo says that they'll take six bricks again as that's what hector would want nacho sounds unsure this but arturo presses nacho into backing him up arturo asks where the sixth brick of drugs is but tyrus tells him that last time was a one time only deal arturo gets power thirsty but tyrus tells him to take five or leave with nothing nacho cock's gun provoking victor tyrus tells nacho to put his gun away but nacho asks if they really want to do this victor grabs a sixth brick out of his bag and then they leave with six while leaving arturo gets cocky once again telling tyrus and victor that's what i thought along with telling nacho outside that they were pissing their pants to the contrary gus and his men come around the corner and brutally murder arturo in front of nacho by suffocating him with a bag over his head along with zip tying his limbs together nachos held at gunpoint being forced to watch arturo slowly suffocate unable to save him gus throws all the cards on the table stating how he knows what nacho did to hector and that nacho's now his this is one of the most brutal moments and better call saul up to this point or even in general season 4 felt like it was starting out fairly slow and mediocre but i remember this scene getting me hyped for the rest of the season when this episode first aired from now on you are mine this episode gets a strong b tier to be honest a lot of the scenes in this episode are forgettable but i do love a few standouts such as kim confronting howard even if i don't agree with her and then jimmy acing his photocopy store job interview but then immediately deciding to take it out was also a standout gus murdering arturo in front of nacho was also a standout and one of gus's best scenes in the entire show in my opinion this stands alongside the box cutter scene from breaking bad don't worry we're still running things season 4 episode 3 something beautiful after the title sequence jimmy meets mike at his favorite diner to pitch stealing an expensive hummel figure from the photocopy store that he had an interview at in the last episode jimmy explains the plan to switch the expense of hummel for a cheap yet almost identical one and to sell it at an auction telling mike that they should do something beautiful mike says the plan sounds good but he'll pass mike doesn't want to do it due to not needing the money anymore since gus is laundering ten thousand dollars for him a week mike just tells jimmy that he'll pass and that jimmy should too mike gives jimmy condolences for chuck but jimmy just brushes it off to clarify that mike isn't really going to do this mike can tell that jimmy's just wanting to do this to keep his mind occupied while mike is implying that jimmy should actually battle his demons jimmy then leaves to call caldera for an appointment saying that he has a very sick fish which is a hilarious line as jimmy clearly wants to hire a thief as an accomplice for his hummel heist since mike won't do it kim goes into mesa verde for the first time since her car accident and catches up with her new paralegal viola kevin gives her a warm welcome calling her a baby bird with a broken wing kevin gives condolences for chuck and asks how jimmy is kim says that he's fine and that they appreciate the arrangement that they sent for them at the funeral kevin then shows kim models of all their planned bank expansions in the near future but kim zones out not being as excited as kevin is kim's current arc is finally realizing how unhealthy overworking herself is due to her car crash and here she sees a ton of future work kevin asked him if something's wrong but she just says no that it's a very fast and aggressive expansion this is the start of the show implying that kim may not want to work with mesa verde for forever kim tells viola to do some work for her and asks to be taken to the courthouse first before going home jimmy meets with caldera who's busy on the phone caldera tells jaime that this guy isn't into jimmy's plan but jimmy asks for the phone himself caldera says no direct contact but caves and gives jimmy the phone who has the contact hey this is the interested party i have one question for you do you gold jimmy says his plan is quick and easy and convinces the contact to take the job as jimmy leaves he tells caldera that he's not trying to tell him how to do his job but that jimmy's way worked when jimmy goes to walk out the door he says excuse me to someone who turns out to be one of the salamanca twins more on this in a moment jimmy begins his hummelheist with the help of ira who becomes the manager of the vamanos pest from breaking bad season 5 the company that todd works for when we first meet him iris sneaks in to find the hummel and swap it but of course it can't be as easy as jimmy planned one of the store owners actually turns out to be there coming out of the bathroom turns out he's crashing at the office due to having marriage problems with his wife due to buying her an expensive vacuum ira is hiding under his desk while he talks to his wife on the phone along with ordering pizza considering he had to ask for his pizza to be sliced i assume that he's ordering from the same place that walt and jessie do in breaking bad as the owner grabs his pizza arik takes the chance to call jimmy to tell him to help get him out jimmy gets out of bed and heads over repeatedly setting off the owner's car alarm with a coat hanger when that doesn't work jimmy fully breaks into the vehicle and takes it out of park causing it to roll across the parking lot with the owner chasing after his car ira uses the distraction to get out and they leave together hey hey so did you get it in gold yeah yeah right i remember this hummelheist being really tense the first time i watched it but to be honest it doesn't have that much replay value although i do somewhat still enjoy it the next day jimmy wakes up in the apartment to kim reviewing viola's work saying how it's great kim gives viola more work and then she leaves this is clearly kim trying to offload some of her work on to viola because she doesn't want to overwork herself like she used to kim gives jimmy a release to sign so that he won't contest the will even though he's only given five thousand dollars which is a huge slap in the face considering chuck was a millionaire kim finally gives jimmy chuck's letter and they read it jimmy and kim have totally different reactions to the letter with jimmy remaining cold while kim tears up although chuck complements jimmy in the letter they're definitely passive aggressive and backhanded ones chuck says things such as them always being brothers along with always being on jimmy's side even though that's not true chuck may have loved jimmy in the distant past when he wrote this it's clear that chuck didn't anymore due to chuck's final words to jimmy in season 3 being that chuck never really cared about him that was a lie that chuck told jimmy to hurt him but jimmy doesn't know that and believes it to be true due to chuck's final actions towards jimmy this letter falls flat and rings hollow and remember jimmy never told kim about that final conversation or well he told her that he saw him but he didn't say really what happened there's a popular theory that kim actually wrote the letter that jimmy reads but before i get any comments saying so i'm pretty sure it was denied by the creators so that's not true kim walks into her room closing her door behind her kim starts crying not only due to the guilt that she feels and tearing chuck down in episode 305 but also because of how casual jimmy is reading it jimmy quickly reads it while still munching down on cereal showing no emotion at all as you may know if someone gets sad or depressed or something horrible happens to someone they usually tend to lose their appetite jimmy still being able to eat throughout the whole thing is really huge symbolism now on the cartel side of the show the episode starts with tyrus victor and nacho setting up arturo's death to look like an attack from a rival gang they drive a car across a spike strip and then drop shell casings along the road leading up to the car they put arturo's body in the car and then shoot it many times and nacho is also forced to get shot in order to make it look real nachos not only shot once but twice and left to die they shoot nacho in the shoulder at first which he was expecting but then when he turns around to face victor he shoots nacho a second time in the gut with tyres saying gotta make it look real nacho makes a phone call to the salamanca twins who eventually pick him up but he's very pale and near death due to losing so much blood from laying out there so long the salamancas seem to take their time inspecting the crime scene before slowly walking over to find nacho dying in the desert they pick him up but take the time to destroy the crime scene entirely before driving nacho to a doctor although gus wants to continue using nacho to his advantage tyrus and victor clearly do not care if nacho dies out there as possible payback for nacho pulling a gun on them in the last episode can i make the call now gotta make it look real nacho tells the twins that he doesn't know who did it but that the vehicle that did it was a firebird they take nacho to caldera who tells them not at his office this also happens at the same time as jimmy is at calderas with jimmy bumping into one of the salamanca twins as he leaves and they arrive caldera grabs a bag of medical supplies and starts working on nacho while they drive somewhere else as nacho goes in and out of consciousness they transport him into a warehouse caldera patches him up and saves his life but tells nacho that he had to leave a bullet in his shoulder and gives him a blood transplant from one of the twins caldera also says that he never wants to see his face again as the cartel is too hot for him we see gus taking a phone call from balsa telling him that the salamancas were hit gus is obviously behind this so he's happy to hear that the cartel is falling for his cover-up for arturo's death gus says that someone knows their business and balsa links together hector's truck getting hit months ago even though that was mike working alone bolsa tells gus to run dummy loads in case their next shipments are planned to be hit of course no one's actually after the salamancas but gus is happy that the cartel is worried that there is gus gives gayle a surprise visit giving an amazing cameo with gail singing the elements song this is gayle's first better call saul appearance along with the earliest we've ever seen him in the timeline gail apparently tested samples from gus saying how they range from 39 to 50 percent pure with an outlier at 67 percent this is incredibly mediocre considering the blue sky wall cooks and breaking bad further emphasizing how important of a cook he becomes gayle says that the samples aren't good and that he can make a much better product but gus says not yet and that gale is meant for better things clearly gus wants the super lab before he fully employs gail i love this gale cameo but it just makes me depressed and knowing it's breaking bad fate this episode gets an a tier i actually enjoyed rewatching this episode more than i thought from all the crazy stuff that happens to nacho then jimmy speaking to mike along with bumpy into one of the salamanca twins while preparing his hummel heist the gael cameo is great and jimmy reading chuck's letter at the end in front of kim considering their polar opposite reactions is incredibly interesting you'd think that jimmy would be the one to tear up while kim keeps it cool but it's the exact opposite season 4 episode 4 talk jimmy wakes up with his phone buzzing getting a job offer at cc mobile but jimmy declines the job kim suggests that jimmy should talk to a therapist and gives jimmy a number for one jimmy tells kim that he got the job at cc mobile as a shift supervisor as an excuse for having a busy schedule and not being able to see a therapist jimmy says that he'll be working there for 10 months implying to the audience that it's been 2 months ever since the events of season 3. after kim leaves jimmy calls back cc mobile and takes the job kim goes to court to observe pro bono cases which weirds out the judge asking to speak to her afterwards the judge asks her what her deal is and she says that she's working for mesa verde the judge offers her a pro bono case but in a rhetorical manner the judge says that she should actually be working hard for mesa verde and not slacking around in his courtroom he tells her that if he sees her again next time he'll really give her a bunch of pd work to do during the judge's next case he sees kim sitting in his courtroom again implying that she does want extra work to do but in a very smart ass way to be honest these scenes are very forgettable and to judge eating the entire time he talks to kim is some sort of very bothersome eating asmr that i am not a fan of jimmy starts his job at cc mobile and sounds disappointed that his store isn't getting any customers he honestly looks about as bored as i am watching this episode jimmy takes a break to go meet ira to get his cut of the hummelheist and is given more than he's expected ira tells jimmy that he likes the hummel gigs and that he'd do more jobs in the future if jimmy has any ideas jimmy says they'll work again in the future but ira tells jimmy to call the vet saying that a new job requires a new phone as you never know who's listening jimmy gets the idea to reel in more customers by painting the store windows with huge ads for burner phones starting the origin of the story that explains why saul goodman has so many burner phones during breaking bad in regards to mike the episode starts with a flashback of mike and his son maddie building a driveway together this is a direct flashback of the story that stacy told mike last season that mike doesn't remember where maddie put his handprint in the concrete of the driveway that they made together we then cut to mike in the support group foreshadowing for later in the episode with mike saying he wanted me to talk i talked i do love this intro even though it's a classic so you're probably wondering how i ended up here cliche to give context we then jump back in time to mike meeting anita at his favorite diner anita shows concern for a support group member named henry but mike calls out his story as bs mike claims that henry's story about his dead wife isn't true saying how the dead wife never existed calling it an act mike says the story changes every time henry tells it poking hole in his stories mike adds that henry has a tell like a bad poker player saying how he rubs his wrist every time he lies mike and anita bet ten dollars on whether this is true or not later that night with mike stacy and anita at the support group stacey talks about her day and how she hadn't thought about maddie all morning for the first time stacy worries about forgetting maddie completely which visibly bothers mike then they listen to henry tell us fake stories about his dead wife trying to relate to stacey's situation since henry is lying about having a dead wife trying to relate to stacy really having a dead husband it pisses mike off anita also notices henry rubbing his wrist while he talks about his fake dead wife just like how mike predicted mike loudly rolls his eyes at this guy but when he gets questioned he says that the group doesn't want to hear what he has to say but he gets pushed so mike calls this guy out for never being married saying how he's selling a bill of goods mike calls out all the discrepancies and henry's stories but even anita tries getting mike to back down even though she knows that he's right mike tells henry that he has no shame telling him to admit it henry angrily walks out and slams the door mike then calls out the support group for not noticing and how they just feed off of each other's misery this is where we catch up to the beginning of the episode hearing mike say you wanted me to talk i talked this scene also reminds me a lot of the breaking bad scene where jesse calls out his support group the next day mike goes back to madrigal to give the employees a hard time again mike gets a call on his phone but ignores it he then gets a call on the work phone and is forced to answer it mike gets told that gus wants to see him that night so he meets gus at the same warehouse where he killed arturo gus says that there's a matter they need to discuss in order for their arrangement to continue asking mike if there's anything he wants to tell him gus is trying to get mike to admit knowing about nacho going after hector and mike does admit it saying nacho's name without gus ever mentioning him directly mike says that he promised not to kill hector but never agreed to be his bodyguard mike then asks what now telling them if they're gonna make a move against him that they better make it but no one budges with mike calling out that gus wants to keep him alive due to wanting mike to do something for him the episode ends with mike standing up to gus telling gus to stop messing around and tell him about the job that he has in mind you're gonna make a move you better make it but they're not gonna either you brought me here because you have an ask so why don't you stop running a game on me and just tell me about the job meanwhile for the rest of the cartel side of the show we also get a separate story line with nacho and the twins first we see one of gus's men enter a gang hideout with a drug delivery after he makes a drop off he returns to an suv with victor in it the next day nacho and the salamanca twins stake out the same gang hideout spotting a silver firebird nacho claims that that's the card that attacked arturo and himself but we know that's not true gus is controlling nacho to set up this rival gang as the fall guy for arturo's death causing the twins to want to retaliate on the rival gang nacho says he'll get a bunch of guys together and attack that night but the twins just straight up grab their guns and go in guns ablazing nacho eventually joins them but is unable to do much due to still being injured this shootout scene with the twins is pretty epic and definitely a standout moment later that night nacho meets with gus and victor telling them that they've cleared out the rival gang and that the twins went back down south to mexico until the heat dies down from the shootout nacho calls out gus's plan for taking over the territory of the rival gang now that they're all wiped out since the cartel can't give the territory to the salamancas due to them being the ones to shoot up the place gus tells nacho to get some rest and that he has more to do nacho goes to his father's house to rest who becomes understandably concerned to see nacho with bullet holes in him papa immediately calls 911 for an ambulance but nacho tells him that he can't go to the hospital as he'll be questioned for his injuries and i hate to say it but this episode gets a c tier now the shootout was amazing but i'm reading the entire episode not just one scene the shootout scene is a solid season 4 standout memory and just the scene alone gets a solid b tier but the rest of the episode is incredibly boring and forgettable to be honest if this episode didn't have the shootout i'd even consider giving it a d tier although i like mike calling out the support group being one of the more interesting support group scenes even that is forgettable to some extent as everything involving stacy's support group is i also just want to make a side note that throughout season 4 a lot of the episodes are boring and forgettable with only one or two moments from each episode actually standing out now each moment is good enough to be rated highly on its own but when it's compared to the rest of the episode it kind of evens each other out and this is something that i kind of had to decide while creating these tier lists because even though each episode has one or two really good moments that are like a tier standard if the rest of the episode is c tier or even d tier i have to rate the episode based off of the whole episode as a whole not just the one really good particular moment in that episode so for example even though the shootout is like b or a tier standard the rest of the episode is c or d to your standards so it kind of evens itself out in that regard and to be honest you'll see more examples of this as we continue this tier list season 4 episode 5 quite a ride this episode starts with technically our second breaking bad flash forward in the show although it's mainly the first and only important breaking bad flash forward that we see for the first five seasons we see saul packing up his breaking bad office collecting his belongings and valuables as francesca shreds paper saul breaks open the wall behind his desk to reveal he was hiding his iconic jean shoebox there the whole time saul also grabs a duffel bag full of rolled up stacks of money from his ceiling with the money being rolled up with rubber bands implying that it's cartel money we get the important lines of jimmy giving francesca a secret attorney to defend her telling her to tell them that jimmy center we also get another important line of jimmy telling francesca to take a mysterious phone call on saul's birthday for him okay when the cops come talk to you and they will what are you gonna tell him talk to my attorney tell him uh jimmy sent ya okay and where are you gonna be november 12th at 3 p.m i'll be there but if it doesn't ring at three on the dot i'm gone don't worry it's gonna ring saul pays francesca out of his duffel bag full of money and gives her extra after she gives him an unsatisfied look he tells her quite a ride which the episode is named after and he offers a hug instead of hugging saul back francesca scoffs and leaves the flashback ends with saul calling out to disappear setting himself up to disappear in the penultimate episode of breaking bad granite state and become the gene that we know from the beginning scene of each season we know that for a fact this is a breaking bad missing scene that occurs right before granite state as saul is wearing the same clothes that he does when he arrives at ed's vacuum store in the beginning of that breaking bad episode absolutely love this breaking bad flash forward and it's one of my favorite scenes out of the entire show i'm only being so brief about it right now since i've already made multiple long discussion and theory videos about it throughout the years so i'm just gonna move on with the rest of the episode quite right huh yep back in the main timeline we get another montage of jimmy board at cc mobile this time disappointed that his large window ads aren't working his window ads say is the man listening privacy sold here eventually someone does notice his window ad and stops and comes in it's also kind of funny how jimmy uses the same finger movements to predict that the customer will come in the same way that he tried to use finger movements in the first episode to predict phone calls when he actually didn't get any jimmy pretends to be on the phone as the customer comes in pretending to be mid-sale acting as if his burner phones are already high in demand jimmy starts selling the customer on the idea of burner phones staying off the grid and entices the customer to buy multiple due to saying that it's more safe if you only use the burner phones once the customer buys a full stack kim is in the courtroom doing pro bono work wheeling and dealing with bill oakley the way that jimmy used to but kim proves to be even better at it kim managed to work out a crazy good deal with oakley but the pro bono client is very unappreciative with the probation kim tells him to grow up or else he's going to jail viola finds kim at the courthouse and tells her that she needs to go to a mesa verde meeting implying that they're already running late clearly kim is more interested in doing pro bono work than mesa verde that night kim has a ton of mesa verde to catch up on unable to watch a show with jimmy jimmy is unable to relax while kim is working making jimmy want to go back to work himself back at cc mobile jimmy is printing a bunch of receipts for burner phone sales in order to buy a bunch to sell himself jimmy grabs a tracksuit from the nail salon and starts wheeling and dealing burner phones on the street at the 24 7 dog house it goes real well until the dirt bag kids that called him an ark earlier jump him and mug him stealing his profit for the night kim wakes up to find jimmy cleaning himself off in the bathroom admitting that he got mugged kim helps him with his injuries with jimmy explaining how he got mugged at the dog house jimmy wonders what's wrong with himself thinking back to a slip in jimmy days saying that he should have seen them a mile away and that they would have known not to roll him jimmy says that he used to be just like them but kim says that those days are over jimmy quietly disagrees but changes the subject saying that he may go talk to a therapist after all the next day jimmy cleans off his window ads for his burner phones at cc mobile meanwhile kim is banging on the door for a pro bono client who is purposely skipping court due to anxiety jimmy then goes to the courthouse and ends up bumping into howard in the bathroom howard looks clearly unwell with jimmy asking him what's wrong i'm sorry i gotta ask [Music] what's what's eating you howard looks unhinged and unprofessional he admits that he's having horrible insomnia jimmy suggests to howard that he should go see a therapist just as kim suggested to jimmy jimmy even takes out the therapist's number that kim gave him but he lies saying that the number was originally for a client instead of himself howard admits that he's already seeing a therapist multiple times a week and that he's a great one at that since jimmy sees howard so unwell even after going to therapy this on motivates jimmy to go see a therapist himself like he told kimmy would this is implied by jimmy ripping up the therapist number that kim gave him along with flushing the pieces down the toilet jimmy meets with his ppd officer at the end of the second month being suspended the officer mentions how he's all done with his community service hours jimmy says that he's working full time at cc mobile and jimmy's asked if he's associating with any known criminals and he says no jimmy says hell he'll show up every second week he'll keep working at cc mobile and that in just under 10 months you'll get his law license back along with a new office jimmy continues saying that he'll have more clients win more cases and then he's going to be a damned good lawyer meanwhile kim calms down her pro bono client and convinces her to go to court and then mutes a phone call while doing so she gets called again and answers it revealing that it's paige kim says she's in the middle of something and can be there at four but paige says that she needs her immediately kim rudely hangs up on paige shocked at even herself for what she just did kim eventually goes to mesa verde and apologizes to paige who explains that this was a huge inconvenience due to not knowing where some files were causing them to redo them completely paige implies that kevin is very upset and asks him if she still has her head in the game she brings up how kim promised that mesa verde would be her sole focus and that when they need her they need her immediately kim apologizes again saying that it'll never happen again meanwhile gus and mike bring in a german engineer for a secret job opportunity that involves digging a huge hole under the laundromat this is the job that gus wanted mike to do from the last episode the method that they get this engineer to the laundromat is top secret but gus doesn't hire him due to him having a loud mouth about his previous jobs along with bragging about fancy new technology they bring in a second engineer this time one that's much more private in old fashion the first engineer underestimated the job calling it easy werner being the second engineer has a completely polar opposite attitude as he goes over many difficulties that this project would have this is our introduction to werner ziegler who gets the job to construct the secret location for the super lab after hearing werner's rational brainstorming gus enters to greet werner personally and shakes his hand this episode gets a b tier and to be honest i wanted to give this episode an a solely just based off of the breaking bad flash forward in the intro but the rest of the episode does not hold up well as i said in the previous episode if i were to just grade the breaking bad flash forward that scene on its own i'd give it an s tier easy but the rest of the episode brings the overall episode score down to a b just barely below an a i do enjoy the howard interaction but it's just not enough to bring the episode up to an a i'm not much of a fan of the season 4 super lab construction arc along with jimmy selling burner phones in my opinion neither have much replay value so this is another example of even though an episode has an incredible scene the rest of the episode really brings it down and so i have to average the grade based off of the whole episode not just the one amazing scene itself season 4 episode 6 pinata this episode starts with a flashback to jimmy in the mail room at hhm along with kim michael mckean also reprises his role as chuck during this flashback with kim idolizing him as just such a great lawyer chuck approaches them and kim introduces herself to chuck as one of their unm law students kim then gives an intellectual question while jimmy makes a fool of himself the flashback ends with jimmy going into the library implying that this is the moment that he secretly started studying for the bar exam all to impress chuck you considered it i just wanted to ask the carrion holdings inc would have been liable under the continuing enterprise exception as well right that's right yeah we looked into that sounds like it was isaac's envy chuck handing him his butt on a platter huh well yeah but isaacson is our client oh really okay well the other guy's butts then back in the current timeline kim is up late working on mesa verde but is tempted to work on pro bono work instead kim snoops in jimmy's notebook and finds doodles of the wechsler mcgill logo that he pitched to her near the end of season 2. this shows how jimmy's thoughts of working in an office with kim again is what's getting him through his suspension the look kim gives jimmy while he's sleeping implies that kim doesn't want this the next morning jimmy admits to kim that his cc mobile job is dead leading kim to ask him about therapy jimmy admits that he decided not to go and kim initially rubs it off after a moment kim then politely asks why jimmy knows that kim wanted him to go but just says that it's not for him kim goes to schweikart and coakley and when she meets rich he thanks her for sending them the got wood drilling job he asks about her cast and she says that she has her cast on for just three more weeks rich ass about jimmy similar to kevin but kim says that they're taking it one step at a time kim asks rich about their banking division to which he says he doesn't have one the scene ends with kim asking him if he wants one this implies that kim may give up mesa varidator rich just like how she gave up galway drilling but she actually gets a job for schweikart while still working at mesa verde she does this so that more people will be working on mesa verde than just her and her one paralegal allowing kim to potentially have more free time for pro bono clients we cut back to jimmy doodling while on the phone at cc mobile as he gets a phone call in regards to the will that he did for mrs strauss who was the woman in his gimme jimmy commercial along with the first person that we ever saw jimmy write a will for jimmy shows that he still remembers all the intricacies to her will talking about who gets what hummel figures under what circumstances jimmy refers the person to hhm saying that mcgill is just a coincidence not wanting to bring up chuck back at the apartment jimmy watches his old gimme jimmy commercial kim calls jimmy to meet her at a restaurant telling jimmy that she met with rich who offered her a job she tells jimmy that this could change the wexler mcgill plans as rich wants kim to build a banking division for them kim explains how her workload has gotten more complicated along with the fact that she's working pro bono cases again because she genuinely likes it and is really good at it jimmy wants to be happy for kim but he's upset that she's choosing schweikart over working with him as wexler mcgill jimmy gives excuses for having his own plans but really his plan was to work with her jimmy excuses himself from the table with kim to say that he's going to the bathroom but he actually goes into the kitchen entrance to the restaurant and holds his stomach clearly sick that his dreams of working alongside kim have been crushed i love the contrast between jimmy's true emotions at the kitchen entrance compared to when he leaves and comes back to the table with kim telling her to do it because it's a great opportunity jimmy goes to see howard at hhm to pick up his 5 000 check from chuck's will jimmy says he has a pressing need that only 5 000 will cure jimmy asks about there being so many empty cubicles at hhm and howard admits that they've had some setbacks partly due to paying out chuck's estate along with the fact that hhm's reputation is currently down in the gutter jimmy asks howard what's he gonna do to get hhm back on his feet but howard stays silent jimmy tells him to get his together and that he even referred them a client recently jimmy goes off on howard calling chuck's death one little setback something that howard is rightfully appalled to hear him say excuse me oh please you suffer one little setback and you're gonna let your entire legacy go one little setback fine your pain is very special what was you just stop wallowing okay here jimmy continues to push guilt of chuck's death onto howard cementing it by saying woe is you along with mocking his pain from chuck's death jimmy tells howard that he's gonna have to fight if he wants to save his dignity and his business he then calls howard a shitty lawyer but a great salesman howard gives a classic fu jimmy jimmy tells him to use that energy as that's clearly the type of response that he was fishing for out of howard jimmy has been purposely mean and cold to howard in order to antagonize him about chuck's death along belittling the severity of the situation this is incredibly rude of jimmy to do hey you're a shitty lawyer howard but you're a great salesman so get out there and sell you jimmy there you go use that jimmy pays four thousand dollars to buy a crap ton of burner phones getting a shipment to the nail salon and moving the entire pallet into his back room jimmy explains to the nail salon owner about his burner phone side business saying he doesn't plan to sell them out of her salon she tries telling him that he can't keep them there but jimmy mentions how he pays rent so he can do whatever he wants with the place she complains about them being a fire hazard to which jimmy bribes her with one of the burner phones jimmy is then seen on the phone discussing pinatas to caldera foreshadowing later in the episode along with talking about his goldfish later that night jimmy confronts the skids that mugged him in the last episode jimmy tries striking up a deal with them offering a hundred dollars for every night he works in the area selling burner phones of course they don't comply and they try to mug him again chasing after him with a knife jimmy leads them down an alleyway to a dead end they start laughing at him but he states that they should have taken the deal with huel and mountain man walking up behind them in ski masks and a gun they kidnap these skids and hang them upside down in a spooky pinata store fuel and mountain man slowly start approaching them with baseball bats intimidatingly smashing pinatas on their way i love the cinematography as we view the scene upside down from the skids perspectives jimmy gets them to beg for forgiveness allow the green to spread the word that jimmy is off limits jimmy tries calling off his men but they keep approaching and smashing pinatas pretending that he can't control them they pretend to hit one of them but stop with the baseball bat an inch away from their face jimmy tells them that they get one warning and that was it the episode ends with jimmy walking away leaving them hung upside down now i'm kind of disappointed that they didn't get at least a little bit of a beating but i guess jimmy didn't want to add assault on top of kidnapping considering that he was planning on letting them go his goal was just to scare them shitless something that he definitely accomplished now on the cartel side of the show we get introduced to the huge warehouse living quarters that verner and his men will stay inside during the construction of the super lab mike says that it's very far away from gus's other operations with gus adding that it must stay completely separate mike suggests adding workout equipment a bar with beer on tap a baseball hoop an entertainment center with tvs and lazy boy chairs along with pool and foosball tables mike mentions how verner said it would take six months when that realistically means eight to ten months in total isolation with 10 hours of hard labor every day mike then moves on to security with a full camera perimeter inside and outside but to keep a low profile mike later goes to visit stacy to apologize for acting out during the support group meeting last episode stacy suggests that he should call anita but mike figures that it'd be best to just keep a distance gus gives hector a late night visit comparing his revenge against hector to a wild kauati from his childhood gus gave the quality a slow and prolonged death showing gus hyper fixation on controlling his revenge and how it happens gus also gives exposition to some of his own backstory which i went incredibly in depth about in my gus frank's mysterious past analysis video although i'm brief on this scene i will say that i love it very much and it's one of my favorite gus spring standout scenes from the entire series werner's crew gets introduced to their living quarters and initially seem very impressed mike huddles up werner's men with kai already giving some immediate attitude mike gives them a rundown on their living situation saying they'll buy them whatever the crew writes down werner vouches for his men telling mike that their living quarters are very impressive mike steps out to go to the security camera trailer telling the man watching the camera to keep an eye on kai this episode gets a strong b tier in my opinion it barely scratches the surface a tier but just not quite as there were some forgettable scenes in this episode so i'm gonna go with a strong b-tier contender i love jimmy's confrontation with howard along with the pinata scene seeing chuck again in a flashback was also nice the scene with gus speaking to hector at the hospital is very important giving key insight into gus's backstory season 4 episode 7 something stupid this episode starts with one of my favorite montages of the entire show to my favorite song from the better call sol soundtrack of all time the song something stupid which the episode is named after the screen is split down the middle with the left showing kim's life along with the right showing jimmy's life this montage spans across multiple months starting in june 2003 and ending in early 2004 giving us the biggest better calls all time skip yet i love how this montage shows their separate work along with their life such as camach schweikart with mesa verde along with jimmy and cc mobile while he sells burner phones on the side the best part is the fact that their sides occasionally cross over but less and less as the montage goes on showing that jimmy and kim are slowly and naturally drifting apart over time now after the intro sequence jimmy shows hule a tour of a potential office space fuel just sounds disappointed in not selling burner phones all i was saying how this office isn't good enough and that if he were a lawyer he'd want to work in a big glass high-rise on the 40th floor kim brings jimmy to a schweikart party but jimmy belittles rich by passive aggressively giving him a hard time for not taking his firm on a more expensive vacation this is due to jimmy still being unhappy that kim isn't going to work with him in another office along with having envy over how successful her career is we later see jimmy hustling burner phones but he gets accosted by an undercover or off-duty cop jimmy gets told to move but he declines due to having a permit along with even collecting sales tax jimmy gets in an argument with this cop while accusing the cop that he'll bust jimmy for petty crimes such as littering or running a stop sign and even go as far as to suggest that he'll plan something on him while this is going on hugh walks up a blasting music through his headset he will hits the cop across the side of the head with a bag of groceries due to being unaware that he is a cop thinking that he's just doing his job as a bodyguard protecting jimmy great job huel you just gave the cop exactly what he wanted something to keep both of them under his thumb hughe gets taken away in a cop car with the cop saying that he actually arrested huel three years ago for pickpocketing jimmy tries backpedaling saying that he'll sell his phone somewhere else but the cop is so off put by the way that jimmy was purposely mouthing off to him that he takes heel away and leaves heal tells jimmy at the courtroom that he may get locked away for two and a half years but jimmy says that it won't happen he'll suggest going on the run but jimmy says that that'll be a bad idea sooner or later it'll catch up to him sooner or later they're gonna catch up with you he didn't get d.b cooper huh foreshadowing for gene much heal says that they never caught tv cooper but jimmy asks huell for a shot at fixing this and that he won't get any jail time jimmy calls himself a magic man asking he'll have a little faith how are you gonna do that you ain't even a lawyer a lawyer dude i don't need to be a lawyer all right i'm a magic man you have a little faith in me we then see jimmy at schweighardt asking kim for help in order to do this jimmy needs to tell kim that he's been selling burner phones on the street something that he's hidden from kim this whole time kim is caught off guard and reasonably so but jimmy just focuses on working an angle against the cop that heal assaulted jimmy suggests going after the fact that the cops had a dui in the past saying how they'll get him under the influence in court so that he'll get worked up and make a scene but kim has a different plan kim agrees to help but is clearly upset with jimmy for hiding a side business from her for over half a year we then see kim speak to suzanne erickson but suzanne mentions how its assault against a cop in broad daylight along with heal having a prior with the same cop kim argues how heal didn't even know the guy was a cop as he was in plain clothes drove an unmarked car and had his back turned suzanne doesn't bite but kim starts going off about suzanne's previous battery cases against cops saying how they all did way worse and got way less time for it calling this unequal justice suzanne goes off herself painting hewlett in a bad light along with heavily insulting jimmy unaware that kim is affiliated with him although kim is pissed off at suzanne smack talking jimmy does give her a wake-up call through her possible second-hand embarrassment from realizing the type of guy that she associates herself with kim tells jimmy that suzanne won't budge and that he will do some jail time no matter what kim says that heel can't skip town and that jimmy has to back it up jimmy says that he'll do his thing and she should do hers not telling her what he's implying as kim drives away she ends up making a u-turn to pick up a ton of school supplies suzanne unknowingly made this personal and kim is not going to let that slide she takes what jimmy said to heart and wants to show jimmy what she's truly made of the episode ends with her calling jimmy to stop whatever he's doing and that she has a better way to handle it i will admit i do love this cliffhanger as kim implies that she's really starting to break bad meanwhile the specialist is working with hector rehabilitating him to signify that he recognizes different colors and emotions hector also purposely knocks over his water so that he can perv on a nurse that night the specialist speaks to gus revealing that it was guests who hired her to work on hector she tells him the good news on hector's recovery but gus tells her to stop his treatments gus notices hector purposely knocking over the water to perv on the nurse in the tape of the recovery therapy implying that gus can tell how hector is right where he wants him this shows how gus wanted hector to recover but only enough so that he's aware of his surroundings meaning that he'll also be aware of the torturous ways that gus wants to continue extracting his revenge on him i believe that this is also the first time we've ever seen gus's house and better call saul along with chronologically in the breaking bad better cross all timeline we get another montage this time showing how verner's men leave their living quarters to get snuck into the laundromat location this montage sticks out to me because i believe that there's a deleted version of this scene that's the exact same except it just has small talk dialogue instead of the song of big rock candy mountain playing i actually did a deleted scenes video for season four i'll link that at the end of this video if i can remember we later see verner's men working underground saying how they need another big blast when the men accidentally hits a supporting pillar with a forklift causing it to crash down kai yells at the worker but gets some pushback causing a fight to ensue mike breaks it up followed by giving a classic heavy mic sigh afterwards mike visits verner's crew at their living quarters and he has a conversation with werner himself they share a beer and werner tries teaching mike some german saying how mike's last name is actually german kai however gives mike a hard time but speaks in german so mike can't understand him werner explains that rebuilding and putting up the support beam will cause a delay and mike asks if they can send kai back to germany werner says how that'll be no good as kai is his best demolition man werner says that they're very behind schedule and that is men can tell werner adds that mike has done everything he can but that mike can't keep his men locked away for forever and that they need some r r this episode gets a b tier although there's still some forgettable moments and i'm not a fan of the super lab arc there's still some scenes that stand out to me first off that something stupid montage is brilliant i love every second of it having huel on the show is always nice and i love the kim cliffhanger of her wanting to con huel out of going to jail also gus deciding to stop hector's rehabilitation is incredibly dark season 4 episode 8 koshata this episode starts with jimmy saying his goodbyes to kim as he goes to goshada saying how he'll be back by thursday he thanks kim for helping out with hugo but kim seems clearly upset at jimmy hiding his sidekick from her during his travels jimmy writes a bunch of different cards with different pens even eventually paying other people on the bus to fill out cards as well once jimmy arrives at coshado we get probably the longest slow zoom shot ever as jimmy goes into the post office there to send all the cards now back at home kim is zoned out on her work with headphones blatantly dismissing jimmy still not happy with him jimmy goes to the nail salon to prepare their scheme for hewl and the nail salon lady gives him a hard time for kim being mad at him but ends up pouring him a drink along with giving him advice on how to get kim back after giving advice she tells jimmy to say sorry but jimmy says they might be past that she leaves jimmy the bottle of alcohol and goes home this scene with the nail salon lady was very forgettable but while re-watching it i actually really enjoy it the next morning kim has a meeting with erickson in regards to huel and brings a handful of her own lawyers they tell erickson that they need more time for their defense due to wanting to check security cameras around the area where hewlett got arrested along with wanting to look into cop's files to see if fuel has had his civil rights violated eriksen speaks to kim privately wondering why she's throwing so many expensive lawyers at such a small case she also tells kim that she won't be intimidated and that kim can follow all the motions that she wants but in the end he will still go to jail in the next scene with kim eriksen and her meet with the judge working on heel's case and hilariously freaks out about getting so many complaint letters about hewlett i have one question for you miss erickson are you prosecuting santa claus your honor because it looks like miracle on 34th street in here look at this this is just today today's batch huh the judge accuses kim of doing this but she denies it saying how hewl has affected many lives that some of them will come to court to defend him the judge wants suzanne and kim to work out a deal as it's not worth this circus this judge freaking out over this is absolutely hysterical definitely a standout for the episode in my opinion and the actor for this judge did an amazing job okay if i receive one more letter from some swamp dwelling do-gooder i'm gonna stream i have looked at this case it does not merit a circus now you two work it out we've tried your honor try again suzanne goes back to her office and starts freaking out demanding all of her workers to while get to work suzanne starts calling names off of the letter but it's secretly jimmy and the camera crew on the other side of the line jimmy has his desk completely covered with burner phones and the camera crew has multiple scripts to stick to personally i think the drama girl does an amazing job pretending to be a member of the church he was supposedly from those improv classes seem to be paying off the sound guy has a ton of different background noises to play while they answer phone calls from children playing the church music they've also created a fake website and donation page dedicated to praising hugh from the church which i believe was a real website that you could actually go to in real life similar to the walt donation page from breaking bad although this scheme is funny i do have to suspend my disbelief slightly here due to the fact that suzanne doesn't just instantly recognize jimmy's voice in a slight twang accent uh who is good afternoon pastor my name is suzanne erickson i'm an assistant district attorney from albuquerque new mexico oh that's a long way off cher jimmy defense hewlett explaining that he saved several church members from a fire that started from a malfunctioning coffee machine and also says how the church will bring their entire congregation on two full church buses to hewle's court hearing after jimmy hangs up he tells the camera crew to pick up every third call and to not speak for longer than 30 seconds jimmy goes to the courthouse and sees kim speaking to suzanne in one of the rooms after kim leaves she kisses jimmy in the stairwell in celebration of their scheme working take note that the only time we really see kim and jimmy being affectionate towards each other is before during or after conning we then cut to jimmy and kim in bed together clearly now made up this shows that although kim was upset with jimmy conning with him always brings them together and this is the true spark of their relationship they mentioned that he will only get four months probation and jimmy gives kim all the credit at schweikart and coakley kevin asked kim to make one of their next expansions as big as two can carry but kim agrees with paige saying how would take too long to get approval and to stick to their normal timetable in truth this is a lot kim could make it work but she denies this request due to becoming more and more mentally distant from her work as we've seen all season long the scene ends with kim in her office staring at the bottle stopper from her first con with jimmy in season 2 as she ponders what she truly loves to do this is probably the most notable moment of the show out of all the times that the show has implied to us what a character is thinking due to them staring at something instead of just outright giving exposition for it kim meets jimmy while he checks out an office space saying that she's been thinking about what they did jimmy apologizes for getting kim involved and says that it'll never happen again kim says that they should do it again subverting expectations by once again implying that kim loves to con also i agree we are totally done with all that over and out no more let's do it again we see nacho at the taco shop again except this time he's sitting in hector's chair with crazy eight in his old chair accepting money someone tells crazy eight that they're light this week similar to how crazy a once was nacho rips out this guy's piercing as punishment and asked crazy eight why he didn't do it himself you had to do that man the guy's not gonna learn otherwise so why didn't you do it that night nacho goes home to his two girlfriends and throws them some drugs without even saying anything to them we see nacho looking is safe to reveal two fake ids one for himself and one for his father the next day nacho goes to the taco shop to find crazy eight and a chef sitting up front with music blasting from the back nacho walks into the kitchen to find alalo in the middle of singing and cooking food i could listen to lalo singh for an entire episode as tony dalton absolutely steals every scene he's in lala was a potential new character that fans theorized about throughout the entirety of better call saul especially around season 3. at the beginning of season 4 the creators confirmed that lala would be a new character and at the end episode 408 he finally gets introduced malala was not only theorized about during better call saul but even back during breaking bad actually both nacho and lala were repeatedly theorized about due to saul's throwaway line mentioning them in breaking bad season 2 episode 8 before better call saw was even an idea oh no no no no no it wasn't me it was ignacio he's the one [Music] oh thank god oh christ one apparently peter gould constantly pushed making wallow and nacho actual characters while vince wasn't so sure about it although now in retrospect he loves the id and is glad that they did it so when better kosovo was created and they introduced ignacio as nacho along with confirming that it was the ignacio that saul mentioned from breaking bad fans kept stirring the pot wondering if we'd ever see lalo walo telling nacho that he's going to die due to loving his cooking so much was a not so subtle foreshadowing for nacho's fate lalo admits to nacho that he's a salamanca and this charismatic introduction to lalo is amazing and was long awaited wallo tells nacho that he's there to help out with the business but not to worry as it's going to be like he's not even there as lala brings out food to crazy aid and the chef nacho stares out from the kitchen implying that lala will be his next big obstacle as things just got even worse first nacho had to deal with tuko then hector and now wallow meanwhile mike has brought werner's men to a strip club for some quote unquote r r but mike and werner go to mike's favorite bar instead werner tells mike about his father who was a famous engineer werner points out a photo of the sydney opera house saying how his father built it i'm only mentioning this as it'll become significant during a scene in a future tier list here we also got our first mention of marguerite werner's wife werner says that out of the 26 years they've been married he's never been away from her for this long mike for some reason leaves werner alone at the bar in order to check on his men at the strip club to find that kai's been kicked out due to touching one of the dancers of course the bouncers threatened to call the cops but mike talks them out of it when mike goes back to the bar he finds verner discussing construction with some random bar folk along with sketching out blueprints on the back of a coaster when mike sees this he rushes over to stop werner pulling him away with the excuse that his wife is calling mike is clearly unoppressed with werner's as am i verner didn't mean anything by it and those drunk bar folk are probably harmless but really werner knows how secretive the job he's doing for gus's considering the construction is done in secret along with the fact that werner's crew is being hidden this is the first time that his crew has been seen outside let alone seeing other people and he starts blabbing out work info to the point that he's sketching blueprints verner may be naive but he's not ignorant this isn't the only time that we'll have this conversation in this video either and it doesn't really sit right with me it means something in the meta now the next day mike speaks to verner verner says that the r r was a good idea but mike thinks otherwise mike hands verner the blueprint that he draw on the back of a coaster and werner tries defending himself but mike isn't having it listen to me carefully the man we're working for is very serious think about the precautions we take to keep everything that goes on here quiet think about how much money you're making think about what happens if something goes wrong mike tried warning werner that they're getting paid extra to do construction for a secret illegal business and that they'll be killed if anything bad happens mike tries to imply as much as he can but verner just doesn't get it do you understand what i am saying to you i do understand says verner but no you don't just just stop i like werner's character a lot but every time i look back on season four and his naivete it just bothers me more and more as you can tell by now they have forgotten me entirely they forgot the german national in the middle of albuquerque talking about pouring hundreds of tons of concrete at a secret underground location mike gives gus a rundown on the current construction explaining their setbacks due to support beam accident which will take about a week to correct mike also explains how there's a giant rock where their elevator shaft is going to be and that they'll have to blast the rock which will take another week mike then tells gus that they're about at the halfway point way behind schedule but that the work is solid gus asks about werner to which mike says that verner knows that he screwed up and that it won't happen again mike says he'll keep a close eye on verner to make sure of it this episode gets a c tier although it has some comedic moments in regards to huel's letter in the grand scheme of things although i do love fuel we don't see too much of them here and the whole hewl koshata scheme is very say it with me forgettable i get that kim being mad at jimmy due to him not telling her about his burner phone side business is important due to scheming and conning bringing them together but the koshatakan started off way too slow for my liking and usually i do love a good slow burn that better call saul and breaking bad is known for it as you can probably tell due to the fact that i sound like a broken record i'm not a fan of the superlab construction arc and werner's naivete just bothers me i will admit that i love the lalo introduction it was hyped up all season long and lalor was revealed in the most perfect way possible palau's introduction is really the only memorable part of the entire episode possibly my favorite antagonist out of the entire better call saul breaking bad universe and the episode ending with his introduction definitely got me incredibly hyped for the final two episodes of the season so although i love the lalo introduction so much to the point that it makes me want to almost bump the episode up to a b tier the slog along the rest of the episode outweighs it in my opinion season 4 episode 9 verterzine this episode starts out with jimmy and kim's scheme to swap mesa verde blueprints by sabotaging the original we see kim hobble into lubbock city hall on crutches going to the department of building safety kim brings up how her quote-unquote firm submitted plans for a mesa verite bank expansion while playing up her exhaustion from having to use crutches kim says how they submitted the wrong blueprints and says how she brought the correct plans in order to compare them she's told that she'll have to completely refile the plans if they're wrong to which kim says that she knows that she just wants to make sure that they're wrong before she goes through the process to refile them kim is really playing the sympathy card here and as you can tell it's working with the employees suggesting come around the counter to her side as they go over comparing the blueprints kim is asked if she has a break or sprain to which she says sprain and that she got it from trail running kim adds that it's not so bad except for the fact that she has an eight month old baby and that her brother has been helping the employee says it's good that she's getting help to which kim implies that her brother is less than competent all this is another handful of lies that comes into play in just a moment kim acts thankful for the employee's help saying how her bosses would have murdered her if something went wrong just as they agree that the blueprints look the same jimmy comes in posing as kim's brother phil while calling her lizzy phil came to get lizzy to check to see if the baby milk is still good or not but lizzy starts freaking out over phil leaving her child alone in the jeep it's a little funky you left my child in your jeep what give me the keys i'm not going to check it where are you going to get aiden because you can't leave a baby in a car what the hell is wrong with you oh man lizzy runs to go check on her baby freaking out that you can't leave a baby alone in the car phil continues to act like a while purposely leaving the milk bag on the blueprints which starts leaking all over it by the time that kim gets back the employee reveals that milk went all over the original blueprints ruining it kim starts freaking the f out oh my god oh my god causing the employee to suggest that they should trade out her copy of the blueprints since she believes that they're the same which was the goal the whole time to trade out the blueprints but make it the employee's idea as kim goes to grab the copy the camera reveals that she actually has two copies of the blueprints she pushes in the identical ones that she showed the employee and takes out a different copy without the employee knowing as the employee starts stamping the new copy to make it official kim's fake concern turns into a genuine smile as she knows that her con to swap the blueprints for a different copy worked although i enjoyed this blueprint con especially on my first watch when the episode aired during this re-watch i felt really bad for the employee sympathy being taken advantage of by kim we then see kim and jimmy celebrating the success of their con at a diner to which jimmy says that his hearing is the following day at 11 am by this time next week he'll once again be james mcgill esquire this casual exposition tells the audience that almost a year has passed since jimmy was suspended from the law jimmy goes on to say that he already has a head start on the clientele for his new law practice as his burner phone side gig is great for client development implying that he's planning to represent those very same criminals that he's been selling drop phones to jimmy says that all those criminals know him as saul goodman planting a seed that'll come to fruition by the end of the next episode jimmy brings up how he and kim can use their conning powers to help his future criminal clients by shortening their sentences just like how they did with huel the kim says that she only wants to use their powers for good kim says they'll no good when they see it but jimmy brings up how they drove 30 miles just so mesa verde can have a 13 percent bigger bank branch questioning how that was using their powers for good kim's silence proves that she doesn't have any defense to what jimmy's saying but she still stubbornly won't budge jimmy understands that he should stop pushing even though kim's being hypocritical here as she thinks that connie's okay when it's her client but doesn't want to do the same for jimmy's future clients jimmy goes into his hearing and checks all the boxes but still doesn't get reinstated when jimmy is asked if he had any influence for his views on the law he didn't mention chuck which is what they were fishing for him to say after the hearing jimmy waits for someone from his meeting to leave to ask what the decision was and her lack of response tells jimmy everything he needs to know about them not approving him being reinstated jimmy chases down one of the members from the hearing and it costs him for an answer as to why he wasn't accepted and gets told that some of the members found him insincere and that'll have to wait another year to reapply we then get the great moment of jimmy throwing his briefcase against the wall while someone else awkwardly walks down the stairs we then see kim writing the word again under jimmy's world's best lawyer coffee mug along with a new bag that she plans to give him assuming that he was accepted by the board kim then gets a phone call from jimmy ranting and raving how he didn't get accepted along with seeing him screech up the parking complex and his suzuki esteem to speak to kim on the top floor jimmy lets off some steam to kim as he explains how everything went well up until they asked him about what the law means to him jimmy is completely clueless as to why they didn't accept him and when kim asked what they said when he talked about chuck jimmy is yet again completely clueless asking what chuck has to do with it jimmy not mentioning chuck is why they found him insincere but jimmy doesn't realize this due to his compartmentalization about chuck's death causing it to be the furthest thing from what's been on his mind kim realizes this and tries to backpedal and avoid the true problem by just saying that he'll appeal and they'll figure this out even though she already has it all figured out so so they turned me down i don't what did they say when you talk about chuck what does chuck have to do with this what well you didn't even why would i okay okay um since kim is trying to hide the truth jimmy thinks that she doesn't believe in him accusing her of thinking he's some kind of low-life a-hole jimmy also calls her out for thinking that he's the type of lawyer that guilty people hire which is a call back to what the kettleman said to him way back in season one i'm sorry you just just what you're the kind of lawyer guilty people hire you think i'm some kind of low life some kind of what kind of lawyer guilty people hire right jimmy continues to unfairly take his anger out on kim saying how when she looks at him she sees slip and jimmy referencing the way that chuck always saw him wait jimmy that's you you look at me and you see slipping jimmy i never said that yeah but you thought it i know you i know what you were what you are people don't change you're slip and jimmy kim can't take the accusations anymore and comes right out and admits that they found him insincere because he didn't mention chuck but jimmy is still clueless jimmy admits that he doesn't think about chuck and that he doesn't miss him this again is due to his compartmentalization over chuck's death especially considering the horrible things that chuck said to him the last time they ever spoke which kim doesn't know about and i don't think she ever finds out jimmy says that mentioning chuck would be the furthest thing from sincere but that's because the way that jimmy is handling chuck's death isn't normal kim realizes this and just gives jimmy a blank stare due to how cold jimmy has been about chuck jimmy then blames her look on the reason why they don't have an office which couldn't be further from the truth obviously chuck was the motivation for jimmy to get into law and with chuck dead being such a huge lawyer himself any normal person would have mentioned how chuck was their inspiration along with how sad they are that he's gone now when kim calls their office stupid as it has nothing to do with anything that they're talking about jimmy leans into it kim then goes off on how she's always had his side and comes running anytime he ever needs her jimmy acts completely delusional here accusing kim of seeing jimmy the same way that everyone else does even though that isn't true i don't blame kim for not knowing how to respond even though she does to the best of her ability finally kim has had enough and again i don't blame her she is fed up with him taking his anger out on her and when she retaliates jimmy says that she's kicking a man when he's down here we get the iconic line of kim saying jimmy you are always down and she walks away this is yet another moment where it seems like jimmy and kim may break up with this being their biggest argument on screen yet there you go kick him in when he's down jimmy you are always down we then cut to kim having a beer at the apartment later that night as jimmy arrives home they stare at each other but say nothing kim approaches jimmy who admits that he messed it all up kim asked him if he still wants to be a lawyer and he agrees to which kim says that they can start with that looks like they're not done with each other yet meanwhile on the cartel side of the show lalo and nacho go to visit hector and his old folks home lolo says my god clearly unhappy with hector's living condition along with the condition of hector in general here we see lalo give hector a gift hector's iconic bell that he's known for throughout breaking bad lalo explains that the bell is a souvenir that he took from a hotel that they burnt down due to the owner showing the salamanca's disrespect giving hector's bell a backstory something that i never thought we'd see but i'm happy that we do as now the transformation of hector is complete with lalo giving him his iconic bell along with seeing the first time that hector ever uses it nacho watches this clearly i'm pleased that not only hector is alive but that lalo is here to take over for him as i implied earlier every time a salamanca is taken down another salamanca takes his place with each one becoming more of an issue than the last with hector staring back up in nacho allah can tell that hector wants to speak to lalo alone so he sends nacho away lala brings up gus and we don't hear the conversation instead we see things from nacho's point of view standing on the other side of the room a fun little detail is the fact that one of the elders that nacho is standing near grabs her purse and holds it implying that she's scared that nacho's going to steal it or something kind of rude profiling to be honest but i got a small chuckle out of it nacho goes to wait for lalo outside to which lalo says just wants to kill everybody as they leave we then see kai preparing explosives to get rid of the huge rock that mike previously told gus about with werner zine spray painted across it werner zine is the name of the episode and his german first see you again they prepare the explosives but have a problem with the circuit for one of the charges even though kai is the demolition expert verner volunteers to go fix the problem as it's extremely dangerous as verner starts working his way down through the wires we get a really intense scene as verner starts having a panic attack as verner's hands visibly tremble he tries being as careful as possible to fix the wires that leads to the explosives werner successfully fixes the circuit problem causing mike to signal tyrus to drive a loud semi-truck above ground around the area to mask the sound of the explosion even though the problem was corrected mike notices that verne is still anxious to the fact that he's clenching his fist and wrist behind his back the explosion goes off successfully and werner's crew celebrates but due to noticing verner's uncertainty mike doesn't afterwards a werner's crew celebrates with beer even peer pressuring mike to have one too by chanting his name mike wanders off to speak to werner who's sitting alone on a couch mike asks verner what's wrong who eventually admits that he feels homesick this is implying that werner is scared that he was going to die without ever seeing his wife again mike admits to werner that he was married for 22 years with werner saying that he'll be married for 26 years in april werner asked to go see his wife for four to five days and that he can leave kai in charge until he gets back mike coldly tells werner that if he wants to see his wife he has to first finish the job mike tries compromising by saying how he'll allow verner an extra phone call with his wife but that clearly isn't enough we then see lao confronting gus in his office saying how he recognizes nacho as one of the people who caused trouble alongside hector and arturo at los pollos back in season three gas then confronts lalo and nacho who are sitting at a booth lol compliments the chicken saying how it's the best he's ever had lol asks to meet the owner to which gus admits that he is the owner lal says that he wants to invest in los poyo's franchising and gus suggests going to his office to discuss further as lol stands up to leave the booth gus gives nacho a hilarious death stare implying wtf but nausea just shrugs it off to imply i don't know once in gus's office alalo introduces himself as a salamanca and says how he's been an admirer of gus for many years lalala then asked us how many los puedos restaurants he has to which gus says seven lal then says that he came on behalf of his entire family to say thanks but gus is initially confused why lalo says it's because gus saved hector's life especially considering all the negative history between them lal says that he sees gus saving hector as a symbol of peace and then theorizes that maybe eladio likes having bad blood between gus and the salamancas as it keeps them in line as gus admits that he's happy with the current arrangement lalo admits that he's just messing around with gus implying how it was just a test to see if gus was at all defiant against deladio even with their first conversation together goss and lalo are already playing mind games as lalo leaves after they shake hands gus's smile turns into a menacing stare as he now realizes that law will be his next major obstacle and adversary as nacho and lalo leave lalo asks where nacho picks up his drugs from gus and asks to be taken there this is where we get the line that i love of lala saying show me as nacho takes them to gus's chicken farm show me mike then asked the security crew about werner's phone call to his wife to which they say that they've been saying goodbye for about like 20 minutes along with the fact that they got a new puppy little do they know that werner has a few tricks up his sleeve we get a somber shot of verner walking away from the phone along with him eyeing down all the security cameras implying that he's up to something mike checks on the security guys the next day and notices a dead pixel on one of the cameras due to it acting up for about 20 seconds mike learns that a second camera did the same thing and then a third mike then searches werner's house to find him gone and a note left there saying how he snuck out to see his wife along with plans for the job so that his crew can still work while he's gone they realized that werner broke himself out and is gone the episode ends on a cliffhanger with mike freaking out needing to track verner down after realizing that werner used a laser pointer to blind the cameras this episode gets an a-tier although i must reiterate that i'm not the biggest fan of the super lab story arc i gotta admit that it held my attention more than other scenes as verner's anxiety while fixing the explosives was pretty intense werner escaping the living quarters was also a really cool cliffhanger to set up the finale i also love every scene that lawlow is in i've said it before and i'll say it again tony dalton just steals the show with every scene that he's in and i love it jimmy and kim's argument in regards to jimmy not getting reinstated was also a huge moment in the show especially after how happy they were at the beginning of the episode season 4 episode 10 winner this episode starts with a flashback to 1998 showing chuck vouching for jimmy at a bar committee and then we see a karaoke party that night to celebrate jimmy becoming a lawyer ernesto just goes ham as kim and jimmy debate what songs they're going to sing next jimmy notices that chuck is going to leave and convinces him to stay to watch jimmy's turn on karaoke jimmy motions for chuck to join him and he reluctantly caves due to peer pressure chuck goes from being incredibly reluctant to stealing the show doing a better job than jimmy after the party chuck then helps a drunk jimmy into bed to which chuck lays down beside him jimmy suggests adding another m to the hhm logo calling it hhmm the flashback ends with them laying in bed while singing the song that they sang together during karaoke it's really heartwarming to see chuck truly enjoy himself with jimmy along with incredibly tragic considering how their story ended this is probably the happiest we've ever seen them together now back in the main timeline we see jimmy grieving chuck at his grave during chuck's one year anniversary of his death as other people who knew chuck also give their condolences this seems very out of character for jimmy and it's due to the fact that we learned that jimmy is just pretending to grieve chuck to give off the public appearance that he is sad over his brother's death when he actually isn't jimmy cheerfully goes back to kim's car to grab coffee and snacks clearly implying that he's faking it for public appearance we then see howard speaking to the camera crew at a new library opening which has been named in honor of chuck howard says how hhm is back stronger than ever although not necessarily true howard admits to the camera crew that he didn't pay the large donation to the library and then we hear other guests saying how they assumed hhm was the anonymous donor and are surprised how that's not the case drama girl who's catering the event walks up to the guests and says that she heard how jimmy actually paid for it and that she saw him write the check rich even confronts kim on the fact that he heard jimmy paid for it and kim says how jimmy would prefer to remain anonymous this is obviously to further sway the public opinion to believe that jimmy actually cared about chuck kim goes outside to check on jimmy having a smoke to which jimmy admits that he did write a 23 thousand dollar check but thinks that it's not worth it as he doesn't even see anyone from the board at the event we then see jimmy in the hhm meeting room and he notices a huge portrait of chuck looming over the room jimmy's at hhm because he ended up agreeing to become a member of the hhm scholarship committee that kim yelled at howard for near the beginning of the season they interviewed many high school kids and eventually they come across christy esposito who had a prior for petty theft but decided to turn her life around at the end of the interviews jimmy turns out to be the only one who voted for christy jimmy openly vouches for christy due to being able to relate to her since jimmy had a bumpy pass before deciding to become a lawyer along with the fact that he's trying to make up for being suspended from the law jimmy says how maybe someone who's been in trouble who doesn't have a perfect record but has made mistakes and faced the consequences would bring something to the table that others wouldn't jimmy then runs out to tell christy that she didn't get the scholarship letting her know right away in the same manner that jimmy ran to a member of his own hearing to find out himself last episode jimmy continues to project himself onto christy by saying how they already made up their minds before she had even walked in the door jimmy says how she made a mistake and that they're never going to forget it due to this they'll give her fake smiles but in reality they'll never let her in jimmy then tries motivating her to do whatever it takes to get what she wants even if it means not playing by the rules by cutting corners telling her that she's going to win one day and be above them jimmy says how she doesn't matter all that much to them paraphrasing what chuck said to jimmy exactly a season ago during the season 3 finale i don't want to hurt your feelings but the truth is you've never mattered all that much to me you don't matter all that much to them so what so what screw them jimmy then tells her that the winner takes it all which is what the episode is named after and this is also in reference to the name of the song that jimmy and chuck sung together in karaoke at the beginning of the episode during that flashback now christy seems intimidated and off put by this random guy in her eyes abrasively blurting out all this to her but she acknowledges that she understands what he's trying to tell her and she leaves as awkward as this confrontation ends up being i still think that she takes what he said to her to heart and then in the future she'll ponder what he said to her and that it'll truly influence her future i see why people constantly bring up christie esposito during predictions for season five and six before they aired as it's really interesting to ponder what she ended up doing with jimmy's projection onto her along with his advice to her jimmy then leaves through hhm through the parking garage to get to his car walking past the same dented trash can that he repeatedly kicked during the first season jimmy goes into his car but has difficulty starting his car and ends up breaking down crying ending the scene this was a really powerful moment and i can see why they named the episode after it even considering everything else that happened in this episode as jimmy arrives home at the apartment kim shows him how she's planning out what he'll say during his appeal in regards to gradually easing into feeling remorseful about chuck jimmy just tells kim that the scholarship interview went well not mentioning christy or anything that happened with her or his mental breakdown in the underground parking jimmy still sounds depressed though with kim confused as she says that the hard part is done due to the scholarship committee not giving christy a chance jimmy projects this onto himself telling him that no matter what he says during the appeal that they'll always see him as that guy you made a mistake and they are never forgetting it as far as they're concerned your mistake is just it's who you are and it's all you are i can say whatever i want to the board i'm still that guy jimmy suggests reading the letter that chuck left him for his will at the hearing and the scene ends we then see jimmy and kim waiting for his appeal hearing as kim asked where jimmy has the letter to which jimmy pats his chest implying that he's keeping chuck's letter close to his heart also in his you know front pocket jimmy says how chuck wrote a good letter and kim agrees but adds that jimmy needs to read it in a believable way as well in the hearing jimmy starts reading chuck's letter but sees how it's not working and decides to stop jimmy calls himself out saying how he was going to try and move them by reading chuck's words but admits how that's not right and how those words should be kept private jimmy then starts speaking about chuck off script saying how chuck loved him in his own way as a brother but not as a lawyer jimmy admits that chuck is a big reason why he became a lawyer and that all his life he wanted to make chuck proud which wasn't easy jimmy says how great it felt to make him proud although that was few and far between since chuck was difficult and knew how to get under someone's skin jimmy even says that chuck was an soab to which manages to crack a smile from one of the members of the board jimmy then throws himself under the bus saying how he did badly in school lacked ambition and cut corners making it impossible to live up to chuck's standards jimmy states that he'll never be as moral smart or respected as chuck but that he can try jimmy starts getting a crackle in his voice as if he's about to cry and says how if he gets to be a lawyer again he'll do his best to be worthy of the name mcgill jimmy adds that if he doesn't get to be a lawyer again that it doesn't matter because he'll still try to be the best person he can be and holds up the letter implying that it's in honor of chuck jimmy concludes by saying how he's lucky that he got the letter from chuck and that he wishes he could have written chuck a letter saying all the things that he wishes that he could this clearly moves the members of the board and even kim sheds a tear as they walk out they celebrate how good of a job jimmy did but kim stops in her tracks when jimmy calls one of the board members a sucker for having actual tears not realizing that kim did as well jimmy thought kim knew that he was faking it the whole time but jimmy sounded so genuine that even kim believed him since she's wanted him to let out real emotions about chuck's death all season long when jimmy calls the board members suckers for believing a speech and makes kim feel like she's a sucker as well kim is left speechless while jimmy goes on and on about how it was all improv and that kim was right saying how it was all about chuck except jimmy did it for all the wrong reasons a woman then comes up to jimmy with the good news and takes him to go and sign paperwork jimmy says he needs a dba due to the fact that he's not practicing under the name of gil which directly contradicts his speech in the meeting where he said he'd work hard to be worthy of the name mcgill i'll do everything in my power to be worthy of the name mcgill oh and sweetheart i'm going to need one more form uh dba because i'm not going to be practicing under the name mcgill so when kim finally says something due to being confused over jimmy getting a dba jimmy turns around to give her the iconic saul goodman line and walks away with kim standing there stunned wait jimmy jimmy what it's all good man meanwhile mike organizes his men to find verner saying that werner has had a three and a half hour head start on them mike calls in to figure out which brands of werner had his wife wiring money from and drives to it we then see lawlo sticking out gus's chicken farm and he notices all of mike's men driving off in a huff we then cut to mike speaking to fred at travelwire and cons fred into giving him information about werner saying how verner is his brother-in-law who has early stage dementia along with a diabetic who doesn't have his insulin fred tells mike that verner made a couple calls on a payphone called a cab and left about an hour before mike arrived mike then convinces fred to let him look at the security footage of werner but can't see the car that he got into mike sees victor waiting outside for him and goes outside to meet gus showing him werner's note that he left mike vouches for verner too gus saying that he just wanted to see his wife to which gus admits that he's one step ahead and already knows where verner's wife is on a plane that's landing in denver in nine hours mike then goes on to say that gus's men will follow her from the airport to wherever werner is and implies that gus will have them both killed mike doesn't want werner or his wife to die due to the fact that the wife isn't in the game at all along with werner being his friend mike suggests that if he can find werner before the wife arrives that he can bring werner back to finish the work that he started and that if verner disappears gus will have no one to finish the job as verner's crew needs him mike adds that this is his fault and that he wants to fix it as gus leaves and mike calls his men to figure out what cab service picked up werner along with calling hotels to figure out where he is mike then asked for the transcripts to werner's last conversation with his wife after they said that they got a new puppy mike realizes that they talked about going on vacation so he grabs pamphlets of hot springs and walks out without even acknowledging fred as mike starts calling up vacation spots we see lalo cheerfully singing again while spying on him from across the street mike drives off and lala follows him mike realizes that he's being followed and starts taking sudden turns to try and lose who's ever tailing him mike opens his glove compartment to which you think that he's gonna grab his gun but really he grabs a piece of gum mike then leads lalo into a parking lot and continues to chew multiple pieces of gum waiting for a random civilian to leave as well mike then rudely backs up in front of the civilian in order to make sure that there's a car between himself and lala when he leaves the parking lot mike then jams the gum wrapper sandwich that he made into the toll machine causing it to jam this gives mike time to drive away while lalo is stuck behind the civilian fussing over how the machine is broken lalo eventually gets impatient and rams the civilian's car out of the way with his own car busting through the toll gate and hilariously causing the civilian to spill his drink all over himself lalo speeds to an intersection and becomes frustrated that he's lost mike allah ends up going back to the travel wire to get the same info out of fred that mike god but fred gets understandably suspicious and doesn't cooperate lalo ends up sneaking through the roof and falling down in front of fred with his gun out this is probably one of the most unrealistic moments of the show but i still love it we then cut to fred's body lying on the floor as lala looks at security footage noticing how mike took vacation pamphlets a customer knocks on the door but lala waves her away which becomes significant in season five there's actually a deleted scene to this episode that shows how lalo ended up burning down the travel wire which also becomes important in season 5. again i have a full video breaking down all the season 4 deleted scenes which i guess i'll have to remember to link on screen at the end of this video if you want to see a more in-depth discussion for that so we then cut to verner who's sitting poolside waiting for his wife an employee notifies him that he has a call for him and he answers it thinking that it's his wife but it turns out to be lalo who poses as an employee for gus werner says that the letter he left for mike explains everything bolalo plays it off saying how mike hasn't shared the letter with gus and asked verner to repeat what he said in the letter in order to get information out of him before mike arrives since lalo knows that mike is most likely ahead of him werner says that his men will be able to continue the work without him and that his instructions are to finish clearing the debris and then begin the south wall werner elaborates that the concrete is standing by and his men can start pouring it werner then mentions kai right as mike arrives to yank the phone away from him lala quickly realizes from the silence that he's now speaking to mike and mike hangs up clearly realizing that verner has told lalo too much remember gus wanted to keep the fact that mike was working for him a secret and now that covers blown along with whatever else werner naively told lalo such as the south wall i also love how lala calls mike buddy's full name michael due to werner introducing mike to lala with his full name to which lalo continues to say throughout the rest of the show mike tells verner to get dressed and that they're leaving along with the fact that mike doesn't want to hear another word out of him mike drives out verner to the middle of the desert in the middle of the night telling him to wait in the car while mike calls gus to tell him that he has verner with him mike admits that werner was at the hot springs along with the fact that he found werner on the phone with someone pretending to work for gus implying that werner blab to him mike says how he's certain that werner didn't tell the person over the phone anything important and then ask gus if he has any idea who verner was talking to gus clearly realizes that it was lalo and that law loads on to his super lab plans since verner has jeopardized the situation gus tells mike to keep werner there and that tyrus and victor will arrive shortly to take care of him aka kill him mike tries talking gus out of killing werner but even though gus knows that mike doesn't want verner to die gus has made up his mind and says how the discussion serves no purpose since this is all mike's fault he tells gus that he'll take care of werner himself since gus won't budge on the decision about werner's fate gus asks mike if he's sure and mike reluctantly agrees mike frustratingly tells verner to get out of the car and asked him what his end game was vern admits they thought he'd come back to his friend michael who would be angry but in time he would understand and forgive this clearly shows how incredibly naive verner was in regards to the entire situation even after the not so subtle warnings that mike told werner after the r r incident after verner blabbed his plans to random bar folks on one hand yes it is unreasonable for mike and gus to not allow burner to see his wife they can't trust him not to blab now halfway through the work what makes them think that they'll be able to trust him once the job is done were they planning to kill them afterwards anyways as i said earlier mike and gus should have just allowed werner to see his wife in peace yes if werner ended up blabbing info to lalo but that only happened due to lala becoming provoked in the situation after he saw mike and his men go on a wild goose chase to find werner if they could have just let vernor go or even allowed him to go none of this would have ever happened that being said on the other hand mike was very clear laying out the rules to verner even if the rules weren't fair verner should have followed them considering might clarify 2 werner that the man that they're working for is dangerous and would have werner killed if he slipped up again mike did imply this to him but he just didn't listen verner naively thought that mike would be the only one mad at him not thinking about how gus would have him killed even if mike doesn't agree with it which is exactly what's going to happen although i understand how unfair things are from werner's perspective i can't help but become repeatedly and incredibly frustrated with werner's naivete for not taking the situation seriously along with mike's previous warnings to him mike admits that it was never up to him but werner keeps apologizing not fully understanding the ramifications of what's happening yet werner still pleased for mike to take him back to the hotel to see his wife as his wife's plane will be landing soon werner asks what different it makes whether he goes back now or in the morning but mike implies that werner won't be going back at all mike tells werner that nothing he says or does will make anyone trust him ever again and that it's too little too late if werner finally starts to clew in as to why they're out in the middle of the desert and tries negotiating just to go home and that he'll never breathe a word about anything ever along with giving his entire payment back when mike asks werner if his wife has a cell phone he says that his wife doesn't know anything to which mike tells him that he needs to make sure he keeps it that way as she's being followed mike finally manages to get through werner's head that he's about to be killed and that if werner doesn't tell his wife to immediately get back on a plane and fly back to germany that she too will be killed werner starts freaking out into now that gus would have his wife killed along with demanding the phone to call her but mike forces him to calm down verner finally realizes the ramifications of his actions along with the situation that he's put not only himself but his wife in as well mike tells verner that it doesn't matter what he tells her just that she can't suspect anything and that she needs to go back to where she belongs although mike is forced to kill werner at least he wants to allow verner to try and save his wife since mike has a soft spot for innocent civilians not in the game being killed due to association with someone who is what werner does next is truly heartbreaking in order to try and save his wife the only way that he can convince her to go back home to germany is to be a total and complete a-hole to her margarita he acts as if he doesn't want to see her doesn't care about her and only cares about his work he ruins the way that she sees him in order to get her to want to leave since verner knows that he's going to die this is the last time that he's ever going to be able to talk to her and that she'll never truly know how every rude thing that he said to her was just a lie to secretly save her life mike tells werner that there'll be a cover up story for his death and that his wife won't be poking around asking questions or calling the police this part gets me every time as it's just so incredibly tragic the way that werner can barely hold in his emotions as he hangs up is such a great touch and i gotta give props to verner's actor for just doing such an outstanding job here as much as i've complained about the super lab arc this season this final conclusion with werner is one of the best moments out of the entire season the conclusion of werner's character is so saddening that's definitely up there is one of the most tragic stories of the show alongside let's say jimmy making irene crying season three as i discussed in the previous tier list now the aftermath of werner's death also bleeds into season five and even six of the show but we'll discuss that in future tier lists werner now accepts his fate as he's told that his wife and work crew will live werner tells mike that there are so many stars visible in the new mexico desert that he'll walk out into the desert to get a better look mike starts following verner with his gun and the scene ends with an incredibly wide shot of the desert as we see mike's silhouette shoot verners we then get another gale cameo with gus showing gayle the underground hole that will become the super lab this scene is also a reference to breaking bad during a flashback scene of gail helping gus unpack new equipment to the super lab once it has been completed an architectural feat truly this is yeah i can work with this very very well it's a flurry of deliveries feels like christmas morning ah it's exciting gail is extremely excited to start working for gus but gus tells gail that he won't start cooking until the super lab is completely finished as gail awkwardly goes top side he walks past mike who is waiting to get acknowledgement from gus with no words spoken mike clears that gus implying that the job is done and that verner is dead although mike is clearly unhappy about it which we explore more in season 5. this episode gets a strong ass tier as you may have predicted by how much i've talked about it everything in this episode was amazing from mike and werner's tragic side of the episode to jimmy's own story by using chuck's death to his advantage to get reinstated the flashback with chuck and everything involving christy esposito now although many of the episodes throughout the middle of season 4 quite boring this season really does start off strong and and strong as well i might be too harsh on season 4 but in my opinion just so much of it is forgettable also even though most of the episodes were fun to watch through the first time i saw them there's not much rewatch ability or replay value in season 4 while returning it at least in my opinion i'm really torn on my b tier ranking for episode 405 i really wanted to bump it up to a tier just because i love the assault goodman breaking bad flash forward so much being one of the standout scenes of the entire series if i were raiding just opening scene alone it'd be up there with possibly my top 10 favorite scenes of all time out of the show maybe one day i'll do a video on my favorite cold opens to better call saul now although the flashboard is one of my favorite scenes the rest of the episode is incredibly mid and forgettable which sadly drags down an episode from an a to a b the thing about this season is almost every episode has great standout moments the breaking bad flash forward and 405 the pinata scene in 406 the something stupid montage in 407 allows introduction at the end of 408 but the rest of each episode is just mostly bland and forgettable each episode does have great moments that makes me want to give a higher rating but then the rest of the episode is just meh so even if 10 percent of an episode is amazing the remaining 90 is boring forgettable or underwhelming i sadly feel like i have to compensate for the rating for the most part of this season the great evens out the not so great season four is definitely the most forgettable season for me take a shot every time i say forgettable just kidding drink responsibly but i wasn't looking all that forward to rewatching season four i was slightly looking forward to it due to not remembering a lot of what happened but now i remember why most of the info went in one ear and out the other i actually think that season four may be my least favorite season of the show i definitely like season two more and i think i even like season one more as well there's only a few redeeming qualities for season four such as the introduction of lalo but that's mainly only in the two and a half final episodes if you enjoy season four feel free to this is just my opinion just because season four isn't my cup of tea doesn't mean it can't be yours if you find more appreciation than i do for season four that's completely respectable season four started off strong and ended really strong but many episodes throughout the middle of the season were very mediocre to me as season four felt like a reset to launch the second half of the show after seasons one to three concluded the chuck era so here's all four tier lists side by side and then also here's the season one to season four episodes all combined into one tier list with season four complete we'll be ranking season five next which i'm incredibly excited for i'd appreciate a like on the video if you've enjoyed anything i've said today if you're new to the challenges having it already subscribe and hit that bell notification to what like i'm sending him to the electric chair i'm a magic man do you have a little faith in me that's why he calls me the magic man i asked him not to call me that but he insists there are so many stars visible in new mexico i will walk out there to get a better look you are going to cut corners and you are going to win they're on the 35th floor you're going to be on the 50th floor you're going to be looking down on them and the higher you rise the more they're going to hate you good good you rub their noses in it you make them suffer doesn't matter quite right huh
