hey mike there's just some microphones that everybody should have in their mic locker today we're gonna go over my top five mics that you need to get what's up youtube welcome back to the channel i'm wavy wayne from wavywane.com and if you don't know yet this channel is all about helping you to record and mix better and faster so go ahead hit that subscribe button hit that like button turn that notification bell on and drop down in the comments and just say what up wavy so today's video is actually one that i've been thinking about for a while and just thinking about sharing with y'all some of my favorite microphones but mike said i just think everybody should have because it'll just give you all the versatility that you need in the studio and no matter what's thrown in front of you you will be able to capture it and capture it well as long as you have these microphones in your my closet let's just address the elephant in the room the obvious one right number one on my list is gonna be a shure sm7b this microphone is just incredible and it's super versatile it has great frequency response it is just an amazing microphone to have it sounds really good um now did i mention too that uh michael jackson actually used the original sm7 on the thriller album yeah that's enough to sell me right there this microphone is built very well it's very professional grade materials that it's built with and it has some great noise or sound rejection qualities right so to where it will reject sounds that are off axis which makes this great for people who may be recording in a live environment or in a noisier environment and really really good for podcasters i guess the only downsides on this microphone is that it's a little bit on the pricey side especially the considering the fact that depending on which preamp you may be using you'll probably need to go ahead and buy a cloud lifter to increase the overall output of this microphone so it could run you up to over 500 for this microphone but again that'll probably be some of the best 500 dollars that you could spend so who do i think this mic is for definitely vocalists using the built-in bass roll-off and presence boosting controls on this microphone you can set the microphone to work with a wide range of different vocal characteristics also any professional audio mixers anybody who's working in professional audio and of course podcasters this is probably the most revered and most uh used widely used podcast and radio broadcast microphone it there is because again it rejects off-axis noise which could be happening when somebody is talking across the table from you or whatever this is a great mic for all those situations it also works great for extreme heavy metal vocals or uh very aggressive rap vocals and if you just have a singer who's just very energetic like my wife lydia is this mic is gonna be one that you definitely want to put on that vocal all right so another one of my must-have microphones is this avantone cv12 that i'm actually speaking into and that you're hearing right now okay now why do i love the cv12 so much because it just sounds beautiful it is a tube condenser microphone at a really really affordable price i mean there's two microphones that cost a lot more than this microphone that don't give you what this microphone gives you now what do i really like this microphone on i love it on a nice silky pop vocal now as long as the singer isn't too harsh this microphone will do it because this microphone is a little bit brighter than a lot of other two microphones that i own but it definitely adds a certain characteristic to a pop smooth type of vocal taylor swift really loves to use this microphone she says it's her favorite and another dope thing about this microphone yes it is affordable yes it's rugged but there are a lot of third-party parts that you can get to actually mod this microphone and make it your own so from changing the tube to the capsules and other internals of the mic i think this is a great choice for everyone to have especially if you don't have a tube condenser already let this be your first one all right josh since we're talking about tube condensers let's go ahead and address the legend okay a u-47 now i think everybody should have a u-47 style microphone because it just offers so much and it really gives you a legendary sound that has been sought after for years i think since the beginning of recording but yes this is not a telefunken u47 it's not a neumann u47 this is my stam audio sa47 i love the sound of this microphone you can be the judge yourself this is what you're hearing me on right now but i think that this vocal offers something um in terms of this microphone offers something in terms of richness for a vocal this will make a great room mic if you're tracking drums or band this mic is also it's just so lush right and so fat and it gives you a vintage sound that automatically sits in the mix and takes you to a certain time period that i just think um we're constantly trying to get to when we're working in the studio so this tube condenser style microphone of a u-47 is definitely a must-have if you want a big warm beautiful vocal this is one and this again this is the sam audio sa47 but there are many other options to get into the u47 genre of microphones and this is definitely an important one to have all right yeah so another very classic microphone that everybody should have is a u87 style microphone now i have in front of me is the gauge audio ecm 87 this makes getting a u87 very affordable and this actually sounds really good now u87s have been used on all types of things from overhead mics to mic and pianos of course vocals guitars drums whatever you name it the u87 can handle it but i will say that it is a little bit more particular than the other mics that i've mentioned so far on vocals right this mic either loves your vocal or hates your vocal u87 styles in general but i will find that the ecm 87 is just a beautiful um representation of what a u87 style microphone should be like and also it just has so much versatility to it and it really does sound great especially for that price i really love this microphone from female vocals to hip-hop vocals it just works on pretty much everything that you put in front of it so next on my list is this little mic right here and this is the shure sm57 you know one thing i just noticed a lot of the good microphones have a seven in the name all right we went to the u47 u87 now we got a u uh sm57 there's something to it with the sevens man so but really this microphone is super versatile i'm using on the vocal right now it's been used on some of the biggest records on vocals it obviously is a great guitar uh microphone for either the uh mic in an acoustic or even the guitar amp is beautiful on a snare drum this microphone is just a workhorse and it's definitely the most versatile microphone that i own because it's so durable i can even use it as a hammer in the studio if i need to i don't recommend you try that though but really sm57 is a beautiful microphone can be used on stage during live performances it's very directional it doesn't require phantom power and it just works it just it's a beautiful microphone it sounds good and you can use it on just about anything all right y'all that has been a quick little insight into the top five microphones i think every engineer should have in their mic locker which ones did i leave out because you know i didn't name them all drop down in the comments below and let me know what you think of these five and what others you have in your mic locker that should be on the list i'm wavy wayne from webbywayne.com check out the website make sure
