hi everybody in this video we are going to try and establish which bikes out there are the best value with shimano 105 now this video has proven to be a complete nightmare for me actually i got completely carried away and lined up 65 bikes all with shimano 105 and after weeks of work then realized that a video was 65 bikes and it becomes ridiculously long and it's never gonna work looking back it was a stupid idea hindsight is a wonderful thing just to give you an idea of all the work i put in lining these bikes up is a run through of all 65 in a couple of seconds [Music] on the upside of all that work was i had a spreadsheet with all the data and could sort them into some kind of order if you have a look in the description down below there are links to all the different parts of the video and then some links to bits of kit that i use anything you buy through this supports the channel and there's a 10 discount code there or a bit of banana slip tungsten or weather lube which i've been using for about two years so what i decided to do in the end is just show you the top five bikes from the all-round race aero bike and endurance categories so having input 65 bikes with shimano 105 into the spreadsheet i could then work out the average price for a bike equipped with shimano 105 and it came in at 2037 pounds and the average weight is 8.83 kilograms so if you can get yourself a bike below those numbers you know you're on to a winner so what is 105 well it's the group set brakes shifters derailleurs bottom bracket crankset cassette and chain and shimano 105 falls pretty much in the middle of shimano's upper end of group sets dua race being the top ultegra 105 ignore that one tiagra here's a dura race crank set and if you compare that to the old tegra very similar you then compare ultegra to the 105. very similar again crank arm's a bit thinner so what you're paying the extra money for dura ace 500 pounds against say the 105 150 pounds is literally 107 grams for the crank set obviously all the other bits and bobs add weight as well but the point being that 105 is an incredibly competent group set and is much closer to the dura ace group set than the price would lead you to believe now one thing of note when you come to buy a bike with shimano 105 is that the manufacturers can be quite crafty so shimano make another crank set this one which is a fair chunk cheaper than the 105 crank set and a good chunk heavier about 200 grams i think and you'll see manufacturers putting this on bikes to save a few pounds so you just need to be aware of that the other thing they might do is swap out the brakes or some other component like that to save a bit of money so just make sure you read the specs now anybody who's been following bicotic for a while might remember my canyon ultimate aero injuries video where i created a formula so that i could sort the bytes because there were so many of them and what would there be 65 bikes that i found with 105 i thought i would use that formula again for this to organize them into some sort of order so i dug up my value formula so basically i assign a price score to the bike comparing it against the cheapest to the most expensive bike in the spreadsheet i do the same with the weight give it a weight score and then i average the two by adding them together and dividing by two now some of the manufacturers don't list their weight and as a result their bike drops to the bottom of the list so it's not perfect but it's the best we can do with all these bikes on the bikotic website i have published some graphs that have all the data in that i've used for this you can put your cursor over and see the bikes there's a graph there for endurance all-round road race bikes aero bikes and then all of them combined together these ones at the end here don't have any weight that's why they've gone to the end and then a few people have been asking if i have a patreon account which i don't it takes up all my spare time making these videos so i don't think i'd be able to offer extra stuff on patreon but for all the people that have asked i've now added a donate button to the end of this page and you'll find the link to this page in the description down below so next up i'm going to show you the top five from the aero category the endurance category and the all-round road race category top 5 aero bikes okay in number five the orbea orca aero m30 team now warbear don't list their weights they say that it's best for you to go into a shop and pick it up and compare it to other bikes so good luck with that if you can find a shop with one in in a place where you're allowed to go to with all the weird tier systems going on due to covid let me know how you get on it's a good looking bike i like to look at this like that little number 18 there that looks like a race car i wish the seat post was a little bit deeper just to cover that little overhang there find that a bit off-putting but a nice bike bit above the average price here in at number four the propel advance 2 disc shimano 105 throughout bit cheaper than the orca arrow and we have a weight for this one 8.9 kilograms now i like the propel this one's got a pretty nice paint scheme to it but as i've said a million times there is a little bit of a problem around here and i can't bear to look at it what you could do is add a few more spacers and then hunter wellies make a little cover that you can put over it and i think that looks quite a lot better actually what do you think hopefully giant are working on the new propel which will have a slightly better setup round there obviously the red shifters don't work with 105. ignore that in third place the arrowed cfsl7 disc so expensive this one three and a half grand that's a whole thousand pounds more than the propel but is a kilo lighter so swings around about unlike the more expensive versions of this bike the cables are exposed and it's got the old one-piece aero bar from canyon but in theory these wheels are pretty good already so you probably wouldn't need to change those and it's actually already got a decent set of tires on it so this is pretty ready to go out of the box really now the bike that was put in first place by the value formula i think i've decided it's not in first place it's this bike here and i'm not really sure if it goes into second place really because the problem i have with it is it doesn't really look like an aero bike does it i'm sure it's got some aero features to it but in comparison to like the air road or the propel it's just not really an aero bike but pretty good price bit heavier than the air road probably an okay bike so in first place for the aero bikes with shimano 105 albeit because i knocked the vitus off the top spot it's this bike here it's the reacto 4000 tiny bit over the average price bit heavier than the air road very similar paint schemes aren't they and the reason why this one's cheaper and probably a bit heavier is because the wheels look a bit dirty but that's okay because if you're going to own this bike for three years that gives you some upgrade options stick in some decent wheels get a nice new seat maybe a one piece bar and stem take your time save up the money and you'll have a little racing rocket there nice i like the reacto 4000 even the cables are pretty well hidden away from this angle anyway okay top five endurance bikes need to work on my hollywood voice in fifth place it's the canyon in durace al7 disc one five nine nine and this is an aluminium bike as you can see four one oh five pretty heavy but you've got the full 105 group set there and it's disc brakes and bear in mind this is the top five of value bikes with 105 in it turns out this is the only one with disc brakes and the rest will have rim brakes like this one here coming in at number four it's the contend sl1 from giant now this is way below the average cost of a 105 bike but we do have that cheaper crank set on it so bear that in mind pretty heavy coming in pretty close to nine kilos on the japanese website aluminium again and i suspect these wheels are pretty heavy but for that kind of price that might be exactly what you're looking for let's just compare it back to back with the canyon and though the frame styles are very different and not a million miles off in the geometry stakes and then in third place we've got the boardman slr 8.9 and this one's actually carbon quite an interesting looking bike this one isn't it bright blue bits here looks quite sporty we've actually got an fsa crank set on this one and we've slashed the average price in half here so you're getting a carbon bike for a thousand pounds and it's 8.9 kilos which sounds a lot but again at this price these wheels are going to be heavy so definite upgrade possibilities kind of depends whether you like the look of it a little bit i guess compare that to the giant contend and they've got really quite similar geometries haven't they so i told you they were all going to be rim breaks from here on in and i wasn't kidding because in second place we've got the canyon in durace cf7 one and a half thousand and again this one's carbon and not a bad weight 7.96 so the value formula has popped this one quite close to the top four 105 on this one and if you compare this to the aluminium version that was in at number five pretty similar pretty similar but the carbon version is quite a lot lighter it's actually cheaper it's the disc brakes isn't it okay so there's definite benefits to buying the rim version of these bikes if rim brakes are your thing then there's definitely some bargains to be had so in first place for the best value endurance bike with shimano 105 tada hey it's another canyon enjoy race this time it's the al7 so this time it's the rim version of the aluminium endurance 8.21 kilos and a price well below the average let's compare that to its disc brake version something you can spot straight away is the disc version looks like it can give you more clearance on fatter tires so that's worth bearing in mind might be worth paying the extra money if you want to get extra clearance for fatter tires so there we go that's the bike in at number one for the endurance 105 bikes and remember this was based on value not necessarily what i like the look of or performance wise so bear that in mind all round race bike and these five bikes are bikes that you maybe would consider if you were thinking of doing a bit of racing maybe a bit of crit racing some hilly racing but basically riding your bike hard these are your all-round lightweight road race bikes and then at number five we've got the cannondale cad 13. rim break 1600 that's a nice price just below the average weight for a 105 bike we've got the cannondale crank set on it so they're saving a bit of money there presumably and you've got this sort of snazzy pink color love it or hate it but this is a nice bike i quite fancy one of these fourth place we've got the giant tcr advanced 2 and this tcr is a lot more compact than the cannondale as is pretty typical with the giant bikes rim brake again this time it's full 105 and you're paying another 99 pounds slightly lighter also bear in mind that the giant is carbon the cad 13 is aluminium okay coming in third we've got the vitus vitesse evo cr105 4105 group set carbon frame well below the average for the 105 bikes slightly below average on the price and you've even got disc brakes so this is a good package i think it might even have prime aero bars on it definitely got a prime stem on it and it's got the prime baroda wheel set hopefully i said that right and these retail for 240 pounds but only weigh 1.58 kilos so these not bad set of wheels really this looks like a pretty good setup coming in in second place yet another canyon it's the ultimate cfs l7 1699 7.72 so pretty light just fractionally lighter than the vitesse i suspect the wheels on the vitesse are probably better than the canyons obviously rim brake so according to the value formula what's come first in the all-round road race category well here it is it's the merida sculptura rim 400 bang on a thousand pounds so it's over half the average price of a 105 byte it's got a full 105 group set 8.16 kilograms so it's not even heavy particularly what a cracking bike for the money i'd say that was pretty good value and again if you're gonna own it for a few years you get a nice little wheel bundle from wiggle here the prime rr 50s the 500 quid you get the carbon wheels and you get a set of tubeless tyres and some sealant and i think that would add a good chunk of performance to this bike and then why not treat yourself to a nice pro logo saddle this one here's the scratch nice so that's the bikes pulled out by the the value formula from 65 bikes but some other things stood out that i liked the look of one of those things was scott addict rc40 that's a little bit pricey at 289 and not super light i'll be totally honest with you however it does have fully hidden cables and i've seen this in the flesh it's very clean looking a little bit on the heavy side scott actually do on the top of the range versions of the addict rc they do a one-piece carbon handlebar and stem that is a lot lighter but still for this 105 bike that's still pretty unheard of to have fully hidden cables like that it's obviously got the full 105 group set but what caught my eye was the fact that if you compare it to the scott addict rc pro bike which is over seven and a half thousand pounds you are basically getting exactly the same frame and you're getting exactly the same fork which means that you have the perfect platform for gradual upgrades and as ever the wheels would be the first place i would look to upgrade so there's a lot of potential there i think and then the bike that came second in the all-round road race category was this one the ultimate cf sl7 i think this is a cracker i really like the color it's 4 105. it's already on the lighter side of the selection of bikes we've looked at but how about you chuck on a pair of these very snazzy looking hunt carbon wheels with carbon spokes a little bit pricey ceramic speed and pretty light one three five eight grams so in comparison to the wheels that are on there already which is the fulcrum racing 900s you'll be saving over half a kilo which is not to be sniffed at chuck on that scratch saddle that we were looking at maybe get yourself some victoria corsa speed g2 tlr clincher road tires and all in all you'd be looking at three four four five and i reckon you'd get it down to about seven kilos and that my friends is a weapon in fact i know somebody who rides something pretty similar to that really and it's pretty miserable riding with him because he's like a rocket so some other things i noticed on this journey is there aren't that many tt bikes available got the speed max cf7 but super expensive this bike presumably on the shopping list of a lot of triathletes but it being only one of three sports that you've got to buy kit for ouch that's a lot of money and i hate swimming so i'm definitely out on that one the only other tt bike i could find was the time machine 2 from bmc it's a lot cheaper but these wheels are definitely not aero kind of pointless buying an aero tt bike unless you're going to match it with the wheels another bike that caught my eye was the caledonia and this is a lower spec version of the civello caledonia 5. so obviously cheaper i really like this color scheme i think that looks rather jazzy another bite that caught my attention which i didn't even know existed i just assumed that pinarello only concentrated on the super top end was this the pinarello paris shimano 105 above average price but you can expect that for pinnarello and i think that looks pretty racy i like that what about this one the defy advance pro 3 same kind of price pretty well kitted out i like the paint scheme not keen on the saddle but you got a lot of bike here you could use this for a lot of stuff very versatile and this pearson is a shop in london that's been open for 160 years and i knew it existed because i had a friend who worked there once but what i didn't know was that they sell their own bikes as well this one here is called the hammer and tongs this was actually the most expensive shimano 105 bike that i've came across i really like their paint scheme here nice logo anybody's got one of these i'd love to know what you think of it what about this the ribble endurance sl disc below the average price not a bad weight people ask me why i don't review rebels very often and there's a big catch for me on these bikes is that quite often their photographs are shot three quarters which means i can't compare the bike in my stack they do do some side views but generally they only publish really tiny versions of it so here's a nice high resolution specialized photo and if you put a ribble photo next to it it comes out that size so it's impossible for me to use it that's why i don't review the ribbles very often something else that popped up while i was doing this was i wanted to know the specific difference between the advanced pro and the advanced versions of giant bikes and basically the pro versions have the overdrive steerer too which i believe means it's got larger diameter bearings in so i spoke to someone at giant and they gave me some stats if you buy the pro which has the overdrive 2 steerer front to back it's 12 stiffer measured at the dropout but then also 32 stiffer laterally which i believe is from side to side like that so not to be sniffed at and i can imagine that would make a difference with heavy cornering and descending so maybe worth the extra money and then the last thing that popped up for me which was a bit disappointing was i love the new trakamonda and it's great to see that they're offering some cheaper versions of it but the problem i have is this version here the 105 version the sl5 you know they market the monda as a super lightweight climbing bike and yet this is coming in at 9.15 kilograms it's an absolute porker and in fact the armonda alr-5 which is the aluminium version of the earmonder is lighter that's a bit disappointing i think so that's it for this video i hope it's of some use to you don't forget in the description down below you can find a link to the biotic website where you'll see these graphs of all the data that i collected for this video so check that out if you like the video please give a thumbs up and if you haven't already consider subscribing to the channel hopefully i'll get my next video made quicker than this one so fingers crossed
