car paint jobs these days will last 10 15 or even 20 years and still look really nice as long as they're properly maintained but one thing that doesn't seem to last very long is plastic trim we're gonna test a whole bunch of different black plastic trim restoration products today and we're gonna find out which one is the best in the first test we'll compare the hydrophobic qualities of each product then we'll see which products attract dirt and dust and which ones don't we'll see which products provide the best uv protection we'll test the durability of these products after exposure to uv and harsh chemicals finally i'll use one of the products on a truck that's over 20 years old to see how it performs on some really faded plastic trim the vehicle that we'll be using to compare the products is a 2003 chevrolet suburban and the black plastic trim is very dull before applying the products i'll first use bug and tar remover to remove as much hidden grime as possible i'll then use a strip wash to remove any bug and tar residue as well as other dirt finally i'll use a pressure washer to clean up the plastic trim as much as possible now that we've cleaned up the trim let's take a closer look at it it's still very faded and porous and will definitely soak up a lot of dirt and dust once it's exposed to the elements at a price of only 62 cents per ounce or seven dollars and 49 cents for 12 ounces the least expensive product we'll be testing is this mcguire's ultimate black plastic restorer makes plastic and trim look like new we're going to test that extended durability evenly into the surface adam's black trim restore will begin to cure in approximately five to six minutes reapply product every few months if the trim begins to show signs of fading or discoloration and the most expensive product we'll be testing at 19.99 for just 10 ceramic wipes is this cerakote trim coat easy to apply ceramic coating protect and restore trim for 200 washes or more made in the usa do not apply in direct sunlight trim must be cool to the touch before application wash and dry surface thoroughly using a non-wax containing detergent such as dawn dish soap must be applied to a completely dry surface wearing provided gloves open one pack and wipe trim surface using the pre-wet wipe in overlapping passes to ensure full coverage rotate wipe as needed ensuring you use all of the surfaces of the wipe move to a new pack when white becomes dry or soiled after application allow a minimum of one hour before driving or exposing the moisture quite a few viewers have requested we try at205 reseal to restore black plastic trim at205 is designed to stop leaks in engine transmission power steering differential and hydraulic systems at-205 reseal is a fast effective and safe stop leak for all rubber seals and gaskets the exclusive formulation restores worn or dried out seals and is not harmful to internal bearings or components made in the usa since we're using at-205 for an off-label purpose i'll apply two coats five minutes apart it's been right at 24 hours since these products were applied and the vehicle has remained inside the shop meguiars is on the left and turtle wax is on the right even after two coats neither product restored the plastic trim to a like new appearance turtle wax is on the left and 303 is on the right 303 definitely did not do as well as turtle wax there's a big difference between 303 and chemical guys with chemical guys really giving this faded bumper a much fresher look it is slightly patchy in one area so applying one more coat would definitely help both chemical guys and mothers back to black look really good however mothers definitely has a more consistent glossy smooth finish compared to mothers carfident just didn't do as well restoring the appearance of the plastic trim adams has definitely done a better job than carfanat as far as appearance but the plastic seems greasy or sticky compared to atoms the cerakote ceramic has definitely done the best job at restoring the plastic trim to a high gloss like new finish the coating is smooth and not at all sticky or greasy unfortunately the at205 hasn't done very well in fact it looks about the same as the area to the right which hasn't had anything applied to it let's go ahead and kick off our uv exposure test before i covered a uvc sensor with plexiglass it was reading approximately 2 200 units but dropped to around 30 units once i covered it with plexiglass i can't use plexiglass or polycarbonate since they block nearly all uv on an untreated surface so plastic just won't work for this test while the use of glass isn't the perfect option it'll provide us with some good information to help the products absorb and cling i'll first sand the glass down using an orbital sander and 120 grit sandpaper painters tape is applied to the opposite side of the sanded area to prevent the coating from being applied and to serve as our control i'll then apply each of the products and we'll do some testing on them later in the video it's been right at one week since the products were applied the vehicles remained outside and in direct sunlight for the last five days without any rain compared to the uncoated plastic unfortunately the meguiars just doesn't look much better after five days of direct sunlight turtle wax didn't hold up much better than meguiar's and both look about the same 303 actually looks a little more faded than meguiar's in turtle wax and about the same as the unprotected trim chemical guys held up far better than meguiar's turtle axe in 303 however it's not quite as glossy after five days of uv exposure mother's back to black has definitely done a good job but just like chemical guys there are some areas that look a little patchy coffin definitely did not do as well as chemical guys and mothers back to black the intense heat and sunlight definitely cooked off the atoms across a large part of the treated area wow look at the difference between atoms and cerakote cerakote is definitely done by far the best of all the products we've tested up next let's see if these coatings attract or even repel dirt and dust i'll follow another vehicle down at gravel road for a couple of miles and i'll use an air blower as well to stir up some dust the plastic trim treated with meguiars collected quite a bit of dust compared to mcguire's turtle wax did a better job with less dust accumulation there's definitely more dust accumulation with 303 compared to turtle wax chemical guys actually did a good job and there just isn't that much dust accumulation mother's back to black seems to have done about the same as chemical guys with very little dust accumulation car front just doesn't have very much shine so it looks dustier than it actually is there's definitely more dust accumulation with atoms compared to most of the other products however it has about the same as 303. the hard smooth cerakote ceramic coating has done an excellent job preventing dust accumulation there's definitely more dust accumulation with at205 and several of the other products compared to the untreated plastic the plastic on the side of the vehicle just doesn't offer the best comparison since the front wheel caused more dust exposure to the parts located closest to the front wheel however the findings look nearly identical to the front plastic with chemical guys and mothers back to black doing very well check out the difference between atoms and cerakote cerakote is definitely doing a much better job i'm going to go ahead and rinse off the dust and then we'll do some additional testing compared to the untreated plastic the water is beating up on the plastic treated with meguires the water is definitely beating up better with turtle wax compared to meguiars the hydrophobic qualities are definitely better with turtle wax compared to 303 chemical guys is also doing a better job than 303 chemical guys and mothers back to black both have done a very good job car front didn't provide a very glossy finish it is doing a great job with the water beading up very well check out the difference between atoms and cerakote cerakote is definitely doing a great job when it comes to hydrophobic qualities unfortunately at-205 just did not do a very good job up next we'll wash the plastic trim using strip wash detergent to test the durability of these products i'll go ahead and move the vehicle back into the shop so we can take a closer look at it the strip detergent definitely had an impact but the water is still beating up better with turtle wax compared to meguiars 303 is definitely not doing as well as turtle wax or maguire's chemical guys is definitely doing a better job than 303 it's very close between chemical guys and mothers but chemical guys is definitely doing a better job the water seems to be beating slightly better with carphone compared to mothers unfortunately the water just isn't beating up very well with atoms excellent hydrophobic qualities with cerakote the water just isn't beating up very effectively with at205 it's pretty common to use bug and tar remover on the front and the sides of the vehicle after i apply the bug and tar remover i'll use a strip wash soap to remove the oily residue left behind by the bug and tar remover the bug and tar remover has really had an impact on many of the products as the water is now sheeting more than it's beating but turtle wax is still outperforming maguire's in 303 chemical guys is now doing a slightly better job than mothers confident is still beating more than its sheeting and atoms is pretty much used up the water is still beating very well with cerakote the water just isn't beating up very effectively with at205 the use of degreasers in the engine bay is pretty common you may choose to use some of these products on the plastic that's under the hood let's go ahead and use a powerful industrial cleaner on each of the coatings the industrial cleaner has really wiped out both meguiars and turtle wax 303 and chemical guys look pretty used up as well mothers back to black and cofferdog look pretty much the same now adams looks just as used up as the rest of the brands but the cerakote ceramic coating looks completely unharmed at-205 is definitely used up the mcguire's turtle wax and 303 look used up but the water isn't completely sheeting just yet chemical guys definitely seems to be performing a little bit better than mothers but both did very well in this showdown carfront is still looking better than atoms cerakote still seems to be doing just as good as when it was first applied the at205 has definitely used up let's see how much uv protection these products offer the uv meter is mounted on a stand to maintain the same orientation throughout the testing in direct sunlight the uv is at approximately 3 400 units placing the untreated portion of the clear glass jar over the sensor caused a 700 unit decrease to approximately 2 700. i rotated the glass jar to position the meguiars coated area of the jar over the sensor and the units dropped slightly to approximately 2615 so only about an 85 point decrease with meguires i did this for each of the products and cerakote did the best with a 200 point decrease mother's back to black second at 140 adam's third at 90 and meguiars and turtle wax tied for fourth at 85. quite frankly none of these products seem to do a good job at blocking uv however as evidenced in the previous testing for hydrophobic qualities all the products provide to varying degrees a boundary layer that has some impact on oxygen exposure which should definitely help slow the oxidizing process this is the front bumper on my 1996 dodge ram 2500 that's had well over 20 years of uv exposure and the bumper looks awful while the rest of the truck is in great condition i decided to go with cerakote but i first spent quite a bit of time using a high pressure washer and a scrub brush removing the white patches and dirt that absorbed into the plastic after getting the bumper extremely clean drying in the shade i applied the cerakote and it looks amazing really improving the overall appearance of the truck cerakote definitely seems to have done the best but it's definitely not the product for everyone i definitely would not recommend just putting this product on without first testing a small area also from my experience with ceramic coatings it is absolutely critical that you take your time and you apply them carefully or things can look like a big mess when you're finished if you have a fairly new vehicle and you plan on washing and detailing that vehicle often chemical guys seems like a great choice mother's back to black did very well in the showdown as well my biggest concern with it though it does take quite a bit of time to apply and you definitely don't want overspray on your vehicle all the videos in this channel are viewer suggested so if you have a video idea i hope you'll take time to leave a comment thanks so much for watching the video please take care and i look forward to next time
