Best of Johnny Depp on Letterman [Part 1]

as we were leaving the restaurant there was a gaggle of paparazzi outside and I approached them you know as as gentlemanly a fashion as I could and I said listen I don't want to be a novelty boy tonight I'd rather you know sort of skip all that so let's just let's just say we'll take this photograph some other day see now that seems fair enough to me it seemed like they would have to respect you on a gentlemanly basis I had hopes that they would in fact they didn't they were pretty aggressive and I was speaking to to them through a opening in a doorway about like this and just to my right there happened to be a large chunk of wood about yay vague kind of a 4x4 like a bedpost I can debris from a hotel room let her slip out of my pocket just drop them away Jagga uh yeah just you know coincidentally was there kind of a kismet thing and uh they were pretty aggressive as I said so I just I smacked the guy on the hand just just tapped him on the hands like yeah yeah you know just do right kind of like that sort of woke him up you know got his attention and and then I went outside with my plank of wood and and I I said okay now well let's have our photo session that you take take the photo go ahead and amazingly when you're holding a plank of wood they don't want to take your photo so I I marched them down the street backwards made them walk backwards which is really nice and you know I like there's a touch ya know ya had him for about ten minutes until the police arrives they didn't take a photograph they the police arrived it to help you or to help - help help them who needed the police in this case was it you or them yeah I think that they called the police I have a sneaking suspicion that they called the police and you know they took me to what is called a custody suite I was flying from Lima Peru to Miami and when I arrived the customs guy immediately it wasn't went straight to me of course and asked me where I had my bag I said piranhas piranhas Ranas yeah laughs if he actually had piranhas in your bag oh yeah I had a collection of shellacked piranhas all unless it sounds beautiful they were nice they were very nice next name and a bat there was a vampire bat in Venice well right dead yeah and I remember had some some vitamin powder that had exploded apparently during the during the flight and so the guy said Oh what do you have I said piranhas and everything so he unzipped the bag and poof of white and he thought he'd just hit the motherlode yeah Johnny tell us tell us a little bit more about this vitamin powder did they ever have any second thoughts about you and in the leading role as this film oh yeah yeah oh yeah I mean second third fourth really yeah yeah yeah yeah but all of those are gone now I would guess yeah like on the second one it was a little easier to breathe yeah what what how did these concerns on their part manifest themselves let's start with phone calls yeah what frantic what were they nervous about um they didn't know what I was doing exactly they were concerned that I was uh I think in their words were ruining the movie something subtle like that yeah they they didn't understand your portrayal they didn't know what the character was what was the problem I got I got you know the frantic phone calls and and basically what it got down to was what is he doing we can't understand what he's saying we don't understand a word he's saying is he drunk are you drunk is he gay and then of course are you gay yeah I heard this story that there was a somewhere in California and studios not Studio City like a Century City or somewhere in Santa Monica Boulevard a giant billboard of you would you is that true do you know what I'm talking about I read know exactly was on about what was the billboard it was it was a giant was back in those days you know when you know all the weird stuff started happening um to me you know um and I was driving down Pico was a 20th Century Fox and there was a massive billboard of me me with holding a gun and with a slogan that said other kids pack lunch that's right I mean right away that something had to be done about it yeah so you didn't care for that portrayal of yourself I was I didn't I thought the gun was bad yeah that news and I thought my mug up there was worse so so I I commandeered a friend of mine and we went to a hardware store and bought some paint and some brushes and rollers and all the accouterments no and and went back in about 2:00 in the morning on roller skates roller skates yeah well why the roller skate well I figured it was such an absurd thing to do you have to try and top yourself yeah make it interesting yeah so we went through on roller skates and the painted out the gun and I was in the middle of turning myself into Groucho Marx when I you know we're very high up when a security guard came around the corner you know you know halt that kind of thing and we halted for a second and he looked at the billboard that he looked at me and he looked nice well that's you and the city I know he said what what are you doing this why I don't I don't like it you know I think it's wrong so so he kind of sort of looked frustrated looked at his watching said I just hurry finish up and get out of here have you purchased an island I did in fact yeah Wow I didn't I didn't know you could you could do that neither than I yeah and how do you how do you get to the island well you could take a boat or seaplane yeah and it does seaplane sounds great have you done that I'm not ready for that yet my heroes were not taking the actors when I was growing who were your heroes it wasn't sort of all over the place you know range from either you know musicians or writers or painters or Evel Knievel or guys like that first of all how's your family oh it's great as well you have two two kids is it yep ten and seven ten and seven and I can remember one of the last appearances you were describing one of your children you said it's like looking after a drunk time yeah yeah they're out of the tiny drunk phase that's good good I'm in it I also see little boys starting to line up mm-hmm to date my daughter yeah and I fear for them yeah I saw the movie the other night and really enjoyed it it's all fantastic because I like it because historically it's the real deal you know identity have you seen the movie no I'm not I'm sorry you've not seen the movie that's just yet and webbing you're too busy to see it probably uh you know I in a way you know once once my job is done on the film it's really none of my business tell me none of your business so you deliberately don't look at the finished product oh yeah I stay as far away as I posses that right yeah if I can I try to stay and as profound a state of ignorance as possible huh oh you come to the right place good we are exactly where you need to be hey but aren't you a little curious to just kind of get a glimpse of yourself on the not remotely no is that right really truly honestly Wow but along the way when you're making a film and say is it complicated like some of these pirate movies they were shot too consecutively not consecutively but simultaneously yes well aren't you a little curious about how the work looks that you're doing No
