[Music] [Applause] [Music] guys I'm so excited for this year's 20-19 gold hitch towing competition this is the closest competition with the newest trucks oh the I got is so much fun we're up here in a cold in the mountains with three cool trucks to it we're all new that's right how did you get the colors to match I have no idea but we have the all-new 2019 GMC Sierra we have the 2019 all new Ram 1500 and of course the new Ford f-150 the three of the most popular trucks and we're gonna go down the mountain and hop the mountain and figure out which truck toasts the best at 90 100 pounds of trailer and over 11,000 feet in elevation [Music] [Applause] [Music] the train were using today for the start of our I contest the I gauntlet is the Cimarron to Northstar it is a side by side made for the big horses the tall horses are thoroughbreds the sport horses big ramp on the back that's all built into the door a ramp on the side it's built into the door walk the horses in walk them out beautiful aluminum wheels it's an aluminum trailer you look at the welds on this it belongs in a museum it's just gorgeous we've got this weighted down with the water totes in there to ninety one hundred pounds total weight trailer and ballast this is the tack room on the front of this North Star Cimarron trailer we loaded Cimarron we loaded Center blocks in here we weighed everything we wanted to get our tongue weight there right at the 10% which we are it's a ninety one hundred pound total trailer and our tongue weight is real close to 900 pounds maybe here over [Music] [Applause] this is the big boy lunch the other tube it has dynamic fuel management yet it's a 6.2 liter yes the biggest v8 has got the most horsepower of the three and you know it's kind of 10 speed it's got all the stuff you want and a new modern truck and this is all new miss she's got aluminum components so it's moving on huh 420 horsepower 400 or Speier 460 torque and it's got a 342 routine axle ratio that is the max tow package for this so it's made for what we're doing here in the high country hell yeah and like the other ones it's got four-wheel drive yes and low range we're measuring the downhill performance in the same way that we've done in previous years we're coming out of the tunnel at 50 miles an hour at the top of the mountain and if and when the truck exceeds this 60 mile an hour speed limit on the way down we apply the brakes gently to slowed back down to 50 then we count the brake applications in each truck we're not using manual shift mode we want the truck in the transmission computer to think for itself and control the truck and trailer down the mountain in the case of this GMC Sierra the 10 speed automatic transmission is made it to this 6.2 liter v8 and it's a very smooth shifting transmission yes it was co-developed with the 4/10 speed but for the GM truck has some unique components and very unique tuning it was very smooth but not aggressive enough 10 brake applications in the end we hope for a slightly better result but let's see how it goes up the mountain kind of cool how we got all three of them to be the same color right that was a mistake is just luck but I'll tell you very different styles to me I like the RAM it's a little bit smaller it's less in your face the GMC is the opposite it's like a freakin hockey mask by comparison it's coming after you and then the Ford is somewhere in the middle now in terms of styling well obviously Ford is sticking with the super solid lines and they overall have a much more chiseled look which some people like I kind of like the GMCs overall design except it's about weird the way the fog lights are kind of sunk in there doesn't look like they fit right the ram is my favorite in terms of a cohesive design and a really good profile icons on uphill and GMC Dublin and now all right where we said you got the timer yep roll all right let's roll it up the mountain those [Music] so the icon plet is 7% grade eight mile stretch and we're going to over 11,000 158 feet above sea level that is correct that's huge yeah that's what makes it so difficult is really the thin air the hard climb all of that stuff all in one and the heavy load absolutely we're throwing 90 100 pounds today we're not maxing these trucks out on trailer weight but payload is maxed out right and it's this thin area this does not have turbos the thin air really takes a toll but this is a powerful engine this is you know since been automatic and their biggest is 6.2 now this is the 6.2 has cylinder deactivation yeah so your highway and everything you're not pushing it too much you build a beef for setup or v2 for me to lose the daily - yes it used to be four to eight for day now I had 17 different configurations right they first told us one and they said that vibrates so little wouldn't so let's measure the sound next time you really have to stomp on it so I want to measure your cabin sound as we always do and this ooh whoa he's actually part of it he actually broke down in this land that's really dangerous guys but if it kicks down right now I'm gonna measure the sound scared at 67.7 decibels let me write that down yeah that was it like 4600 rpm which sub as high as this truck has gone yeah 46 [Music] Mayers these don't need another three-headed toy in there now we know they all available the RAM is available the Horde is available and sometime this winter the new GMC will be available with a bigger towing mirror this glass measured at 10 inch which is almost the widest glass in the class but this breech here is 5 inches that is the biggest reach which gets rid of some of that blind spot especially on the other side so the mayor being further away less blind spot that's a good-looking Mary great for towing and then but this it bolts like most trucks do both to the window glass the window frame that's how that's attached on this Ford mirror the glass measures across horizontally eight inches and the reach here is three so you got a little bit of a help with the blind spot and this also mounts to the window frame and units that's the standard mirror down this to 2019 the new GMC the marriage a little different they're not mounted to the window glass they're mounted down into the door it's a more expensive way to do it but they did that to get this here that blind spot especially on the other side now this one has a ten and a half inch glass it has about two and a half inch reach for your blind spot in there so it's not the biggest mirrors but this is the standard mirror all these have been really well two trailers today we've actually been able to see all the way down the sides and these are horse traders that aren't as wide about six feet wide so that's it closer to the body with these trucks so why don't we use cruise control policy I make policy it's Andres this is Andres decision it's because a lot of the trucks cannot hold cruise control with this load we're stressing these trucks out pretty pretty heavily we're monitoring temperatures so that the gauges the coolant temperatures basically in the middle what around 210 degrees so the transmission tab you can see right now in the gauges on 192 where if the time going steady just I'm gonna stop all right so we're almost at the end of the run for the GMC and we're monitoring fuel economy as the trip meter is telling us and the time stops now three point eight right there with the benchmark in eight minutes one second which is basically a benchmark run [Music] so these new tailgates have electric release on this GMC has a button they have a lot of things I want to show this black thing where you go wait you know what what this part of the tailgate right if it went down it could actually hit oh it would so there is not a lot of space so you got to be mindful of how much space you have with your tongue all right let's talk trailers okay cranking cranking cranking keep cranking I wish you got a power tack someday [Music] so this is gonna be a little bit different than GMC when it comes to squat that's true the GMC squatted to inches which is good for 9,000 pounds now what's cool about the RAM is this air ride for a corner air so this actually will adjust for the trailer so we've got to do things a little bit differently differently on the hitch so we can level out the trailer because it'll keep leveling things out and what's really cool I thought might be a top secret ram but if you put this in a door entry mode it lowers the truck making these your hook to the ball I love that my air rides do that on my other trucks [Music] check it out the truck is raising itself finally the air suspension is helping us out alright let's lower the tailgate and see how that goes is it but oh my gosh look at it Oh same spacing here yeah but this is a single tailgate not a double like on the gmc's cable not let it go yeah why are these loose catch that is a 5.7 liter Hemi it puts out 395 horsepower and 410 count feet of torque I love that Hemi it's so glad they kept it this one has that cool sound this also is a 392 we're in so it's got a trigger tone axle and it's an 8-speed automatic you guys got the rotary dial right I like that rotary dial I'm used to all those other controls around it shut off the auto stop start and your full drive systems all that surround the knob it makes it really convenient you know what's really cool about that you mention auto start/stop and well that's part of the e tort system at this house I love that system because basically it's an electric motor that kind of helps you get going from a standstill yeah it's got a big serpentine belt that goes to your crank and when it's warmed up that actually stops and starts it right off the crankshaft that's pretty cool technology it's got electric fan all this cool stuff and thus four-wheel drive yes indeed [Music] this brand-new Ram has an 8-speed automatic transmission while the other two trucks have ten speeds and we originally expected the 8-speed to perform a little bit better on the downhill because it has more spacing between gears however while it was quick and smooth to shift it did not build enough rpm to slow down the trailer in a very aggressive way so once again ten brake applications for the RAM it's the same result as we had with the GMC Sierra very peculiar although the Hemi you could hear the engine a little bit more so you get more feedback from the drivetrain still 10 brake applications let's see what for does having good visibility is a big part of towing and all three of these trucks have a lot of goodies when it comes to cameras the RAM for example has a 360 this one has a 12 inch screen on the inside but there is a camera mounted here in the front grille which gives you that full 360 degree view but come along here this way in the fourth it's very similar camera here in the grille cameras under both mirrors like in the RAM but here in the gym see the story is a little bit different because this truck has a max towing package it's actually missing the front camera it does have the side camera so you still have that view but come on to the back because I'll show you the extra cameras for the trailer when you get that towing package you get these two extra plugs for the camera and you could put that camera on the back of the trailer we're actually inside the trailer for the horses for example [Music] good yep yeah now we're good time is on well listen to that Hemi roar that's nice it does have a more pronounced sound yeah it definitely sounds little sporty-er damn this thing is flying yeah you got it to speed nice now did they eat or do anything to help against the speed because we were already moving and I thought that you talk really just didn't sing off the line right the torque should not make a difference the way that eat our quirks as soon as you're in the meat of the tort of the gas engine yeah the electric motor does nothing okay so it just dies up what it's doing is it's giving you a little bit of extra oomph on the line yes and that we just you know the gas or take to get to get up to speed yeah you feel that all the times you drove it did you feel that hope no but I did feel though the start-stop is smooth yeah because when you chew on that yes so the start-stop is actually its moves out that transition initially but I never felt like it actually gives you a punch in there you know of power next time it changes gear again let's listen to this now it's really on 65.2 7 it's a little bit quieter but but but there's some more be a noise I don't get the National place lower it's like a bit slower but it's a scream this is a higher rpm we can round 51 or whatever when you're doing that test that's a lot higher [Music] throttle 960 okay we're getting there getting there guys we're all I will let you down for 500 away from redline she is this round really with to run it really does feel like it's speed wise it's close to the other one okay are you ready almost and stopping the clock on the RAM now we both are hare slower 4.7 mpg so what was what was the time 8:05 so four seconds slower which is really good little over there for seven miles per gallon that's me that's very that's a better result than the way Canada 4.7 mpg yes the other was what three was great [Music] how's this button and by golly it is this is that one that you can this letter fly with a key fob but no it did not hit the jack there might be a little bit closer to what the RAM and the GMC were but pretty close you just kind of remember make sure that Jack handles not over here that would have been a tragic thing this is that one too that you can fold over so just things to know about hooking up to your trailer all right let's see what it is can you shut the engine off all right so I measured before and after on both sides okay so here we have just over 37 we were just below 40 so this is three inches of squat this has one inch more than on the GMC and the remnant squad because it had air suspension let me double check the other side to make sure oh look it's a good idea it's still about thirty seven and a quarter so almost three inches of squat on the Ford [Music] see there's a funny part right the three and a half liter ecoboost v-6 is a small displacement among these yes but it also has twin turbos and the most torque and does an it's dual injection it's gets got a lot 375 horsepower and 478 of torque made it to a ten speed automatic I hope you beat that and it's of course a 4x4 all these three trucks are four-wheel drive and we run them into will drive that's true it's a 355 rear-end okay yes it is it's now it's a trailer toy you got ten speeds first two or pretty low that 355 is plenty of axle for a trail finally the f-150 with a ten-speed we tested a ten-speed EcoBoost combination previously in previous years and we're hoping that ford has improved some of the calibration and tuning on this transmission for the downhill portion of the test yes this transmission was co-developed with GM but in this case it's made it to much smaller displacement engine that's supercharged and it has different tuning at the end I cannot believe this same result 10 brake applications although the EcoBoost was keeping the RPMs a little bit higher than the big v8 still same result as far as brakes going down the mountain I cannot believe it least have 10 trucks that's what I call them in 1500 s and 150 these are not the tallest trucks even though this Ram does have a factory when it slipped with the off-road package but they all have ways to get you in the cab and the bed different things that help you this one here has the automatic running board that opens when you open the door it opens the running board down so then you can get in there and then gets out of the way for off-roading it has a step at the back end you kick a button and it drops down on one step so you can use that to climb up over your tailgate that's nice now a Ford also the 150 has the running board Det folds down with your door and that's it's pretty nice how they do that and then right behind the cab they have a little step it's a little bigger step you kick it and it drops down and you can swing up over and get on your crossover toolbox or get into your your bed which is nice you got two these trucks you know or they keep getting taller but that helps you with that now the GMC has a fixed running board and what's unique about it is it goes all the way almost to the back wheel which means you can stand on to get into your crossover toolbox reach into your bed and what they had that I think is really unique is in the bumper tape also made the step in the bumper the rear bumper a little bigger at this time and you have a little pocket where your stick pocket is to put your hand easy to climb up there you can do with the trailer hooked up that's probably my favorite way to get into bed is what the GMC has [Music] starting the clock now put the hammer down so you have to push that okay for a while I thought I did so that was a pretty strong acceleration from the EcoBoost yeah it was effortless got up to sixty really quick so as long as the clear run I'm pretty sure that this would be slightly quicker than the other two yeah this is we need this after that eight men around yeah they sound obviously in the EcoBoost has been augmented for a while yeah so you're hearing a little deeper tone on the inside the cabin makes power that's it so you just hear induction it doesn't it doesn't have that v8 growl you know that the Hemi does sure it's got weight and when the down shifts again we need to measure the noise level but this has a ten speed automatic that's basically shared a lot of components are shared with the GMC yeah there could have helped with GM transmissions the second gen EcoBoost 235 came out in 17 model year and that also there was later part of that year also with a ten-speed so 18s have it and now 19's have it as well right so far it's just flying up the mountain as always you could pose make a plug and hold it back [Music] yes this is the high country and it's snowing in October but we're using the same scoring system to compare these trucks hundred points is the maximum truck can get on the way down 25 maximum points for each truck we subtract the point every time we touch the brakes in the truck on the way up the mountain 50 points is the maximum truck and get eight minutes run is our benchmark run and five seconds over that subtracts a point and sixty PG is our benchmark fuel economy on the way up and every point two mpg below that subtracts a point finally the 25 points it's a subjective score which each one of us gives the truck for the final score in the end [Music] stop now stopped at 7:55 holy single three point three three point three okay this is very similar to the results with other EcoBoost engines now we have to score this objective bargeboards and we'll find out how these trucks actually stack up [Music] are you ready for this brawl yeah yeah bring it on yes all right let's do this objective scores Nathan okay well the highest score for me is the RAM okay there's a 24 okay okay so got top marks on interior with the electronics the ride squad fantastic because the air suspension I only took one point off because the mirrors weren't as wide as my number two on the list which is the GMC okay and I gave that 122 it had a really good ride squat was pretty well controlled mirrors were great the biggest ones out there and then the fort has a solid 20 I had to take off because the squat I felt was noticeable and the interior fit and finish the entire interior I'm sorry it doesn't compete with the other two and I took a lot of points off for that I placed this class of trucks one two three that's how I used to before it's judging of effort anyway know the RAM I liked it the most I've gave it a score of 24 and you know the air ride I love that right four corner I ride it didn't squat with the trailer the stock mirrors were the longest reach they get furthest out on the trailer sway is very minimal on it I didn't think it was a problem along with that you know that's part of the handling squat and cabin comfort you know it's very very good there they're all so close on cabin cover yeah now the second place I would go with the GMC it's you know it's also a new 19 and I gave it a 23 only squad a couple inches they've got that you know solid suspension on it didn't sway and you know I liked the cabin I'm glad he straightened out the steering wheel brake controllers in a good spot everything seen me where it was and the mirrors are exceptional they're not quite as much reaches the RAM but they're a little bigger you got a little blind spot cut out so you can see things and then the last place which isn't really far back last is 22 on the Ford and the only thing that lost points for was it didn't have much of a mirror for the standard in their course another map Tointon there's the handling was a little weird and the streaming one you can feel that when the backend moves around a little bit that's where you feel that's right feeling and it was you know you hang on to it you can feel there's a little more sway with it than the other two trucks I've never done this before but I'm gonna give the RAM the perfect score for subjective score it just has the technology the interior the air suspension that keeps the right not only comfortable but also level with Ford it was a leader a year ago and we gave it a lot of awards in previous years but the competition has stepped up the fourth has a little bit more squad and the interior as far as the technology is concerned the resolution on the camera system is less than in the RAM and that's why I gave the Ford 22 points for those reasons and the GMC is in second place in my mind it has amazing technology for towing the interior is not as quite as comfortable and it as good as in the RAM or the Ford so I took a couple points off there so guys are you saying that we are all basically at the same mind Ram comes out on top GMC second Ford third yes but I don't know about the mind thing but yes guys before we freeze completely I have this final scores yes please for the Ford in third place here 72 and a half points the GMC in the second place seventy six and a half points and finally 82 points for the RAM which is a really good sport can you explain why those points are the way they are yeah of course we lost quite a few points in old trucks on the way down with breaking applications right and on the way up with fuel economy but in the end these are all really high scores oh go back to thr calm for when news views and real world icon with towing reviews and where else and with kids and mr. shark Don Dom we'll see you next time guys
