Best Garden Seed Catalogs 2023

hi it's Gary with successful Gardens and today we're going to be talking about garden seed catalogs I don't know about you but my mailbox has been inundated with a lot of catalogs in fact right here I've got over 15 catalogs and I know I still have two that I've requested still coming my way so a lot of catalogs a lot of things to look over but what's most important or the coolest thing about this I've already got my first order of garden seeds yes there was one catalog that that came early before the holidays and I was looking at a sale and I jumped on that sale to to take advantage of some sale pricing and so I got some of my first seeds already there's some Tomatoes there's some peppers and a new corn but I'm jumping ahead of myself [Applause] so what do we look for in a garden Seed Catalog over the years I've tried a lot of seed companies and I still come back to probably my favorite ones and sometimes a very year to year depends on if they are offering a sale or a special introduction on some new varieties and then if there's something I'm looking for to specialize in in growing that particular year so there's so many things that you can look for but out of all the seed catalogs that you can order the most important thing is the information or the growing advice that the seed catalogs offer I remember ordering garden seed from Gurney's with my grandma um years ago and you know and so that's one I get every year also and if anything it just brings back memories of that time gardening with my grandmother but today I'm going to share with you my top five go-to seed companies that I buy year after year from without fail a list at the in the comment section of this video um all my all of these seed catalogs the companies and you can check those out if you'd like all right my top five seed companies pine trees seed cap company is based out of Maine there again in the New England area of the United States and they are a mom and pop or family company they've been doing this for 40 years but they have one of the best catalogs that I have seen in offering such a wonderful variety of of out of any category or variety of vegetables that you would want and the descriptions are great they tell you what you need to know they'll give you growing hints you know this the soil temperature requirements for for best germination and so they it is um a company that I really really like um and they're very very dependable now another thing about pine tree seed company is some of the additional things that they offer they have a wonderful selection of flowers to choose from but what I like is they have a really complete order of garden supplies you can if you're in a rural area this is a company that makes it easy to look for what you need um in in having success in Growing Seeds in your garden they whether you start the seeds early with with lights with heat mats all of the growing needs or if there is some specialized fertilizers or um insecticides that are very safe and for the most part they are all organic and so it has a great selection of additional products that you would need for the garden now on the other side of that what they offer if you like to make spice Blends whether it's a a barbecue rub or if you like to actually make um teas herbal tea blends pine tree has a wonderful selection of ingredients for those spice shrubs and the homemade teas great great resource for that they have supplies for making soap making if you like to make your own soap they have the essential oils they have the wax they have all the supplies and that you would need and so I have always found that pine tree if there's something I'm looking specifically for in my growing needs pine tree is a company that offers almost everything that you would need so check out Pine Tree in your catalog search a seed catalog that has been around a seed company that has been around for what seems like the dawn of time is the Burpee Seed Company burpees were was started back in the 1800s they have great resources of of the old standards but also very Progressive in some of their new introductions in fact there are some new introductions that are you can only buy through the Burpee Seed Company you might be able to find some of those varieties in your local Garden Center they're going to be grown in specific pots that say Burpee on them they might be an n-cap display or something on that so you know that you're getting that high quality but also you can check those seed racks or look online and order them online one of the specific items that I always get from um from the Berkeley seed company is their some Tomatoes they have introduced some tomatoes that are are fantastic they are um some beef steaks they have some great sauce tomatoes some Aromas um but they are specific or exclusive if you will to the Burpee Seed Company and so one of my favorite tomatoes to grow is the porterhouse tomato it's just this very large they they played did a name play on the porterhouse referring to a porterhouse steak so you know it's going to be nice and large and juicy there's three types of tomatoes that I get from burpees when we make our Salsas and our spaghetti sauces but they are a Roma type of tomato but they're larger ones they're very meaty not a lot of juice not a lot of seeds in them but I like the super sauce um we have the big mama and then fresh salsa and those are three tomatoes that I get exclusively from burpees check out Burpee you might not like all of their seeds or you might be able to order everything that you need from the Burpee Seed Company I should say another favorite seed company is the Johnny Seed company again they are out of the New England area not only do I like their seeds but the information and their pictures that they offer in their catalog is remarkable if you have questions about anything that you want to grow or how to grow what conditions they need to grow in Johnny's has that information for you in their Seed Catalog so it's almost like a reference manual more than just a Seed Catalog but right here is here's a selection of garden peas they're showing the snaps they're showing the sugar pods they're showing the shelling type and so but what they offer um is just a valuable resource of information plus a great selection and incredible selection of seeds and some of them will also be exclusive to the Johnny Seed Company they have a a great selection on flowers I have a niece that does a cut flower garden she uses all of her cut flowers and floral bouquets and sells those floral bouquets but she orders pretty much um exclusively from Johnny's because of their of their selection of flowers so take a look at the Johnny Seed company for another um great resource for your gardening seeds this company totally Tomatoes specializes in totally Tomatoes probably the one of the biggest or widest selection of tomatoes that you will ever find but they offer some other things other than just tomatoes they have a great selection of peppers but they also have you know your melons and all your other garden seeds so you could probably get everything you would want in your garden or want to grow in your garden by seed and the totally Tomato Seed Catalog but one thing that you will also want to watch out for is the price of seeds in all of the seed companies the seed catalogs they will offer you might see that one company has a higher price than another for the same variety of seeds and what that usually entails is the quantity of seeds that you are getting or receiving in the packet if you read down to hearing their descriptions you will see that your one packet is 30 seeds and that on this particular tomato but if you look at other varieties there might only be 10 seeds in that package but in another company that might be a 7.99 but that that the quantity of seeds that they're offering there might be 30 for for that so always don't let the price initial price scare you or direct you to one seed company or another always make sure that you read the full description of the packet and know how many seeds you are getting totally Tomatoes offers some price breaks if I just ordered one packet it's 345 for a packet but if I ordered three or more packets it would be the price drops down to 315 per packet now one thing that I do like about totally Tomatoes is they offer with when you place an order with them they offer two free seed packets of something new that they are introducing and this year they happen to be introducing a new tomato and a sweet pepper actually it's kind of a hot pepper but it's it's on the milder side so make sure when you're ordering make sure that you fully understand what you're getting now okay I mentioned that I got those early seeds because they were offering a sale and I actually it was an email I received from this company seeds and such before Christmas and they were offering a Christmas special and I I they jump I jumped on it because they were offering A reduced priced or a sale price that I knew I would never see again and even though I haven't got their catalog I jumped online I checked out their online catalog and lo and behold I found just a couple of varieties of of new introductions of vegetables that I wanted to grow so I jumped on those and got those at the reduced price of course after the holidays I got their Seed Catalog in their mail and then I was able to then do what I normally do with my trusty pin I started circling individual varieties of plants or or such that I wanted to grow things that checking my list I needed to restock some of my supplies but with seeds and such they have a reduced price on their packets with the more that you buy and this is straight across the board it's not you don't have to buy three or four packages of one variety you can buy if you buy 20 packets of seeds throughout their whole catalog you get the past the best discount on the pricing and so there again look to see if there are any exciting or any um bonuses if you will um for ordering from a seed company and then start circling everything that you want and that you're looking for um start flapping Pages like I have done and you will be able to then figure out what you want and what you need in your garden so yes seeds and such is probably my go-to seed company that I always order from but I also supplement my seed needs by ordering from these other companies I enjoy get receiving seed catalogs in the mail my wife just laughs at me because I can get lost in a Seed Catalog by reading their descriptions and saying oh we gotta try this oh wait I want to try this one instead and she just laughs at me because it's almost like I'm in a candy shop or it's the you know Christmas morning it's just so fun to to look at and to go through the seed catalogs and what brings about when it's snowing outside there's always the hope of spring when I look at a Seed Catalog are there sea catalogs that I've missed yes there are like I said I know I'm waiting for two seed companies to send me their catalogs and I'm anxiously waiting for them because there's some varieties that I know are exclusive to that those companies but what seed companies do you order from who is your go-to seed company leave that in the comments
