it is summer and while that may mean a lot of things I think it's high time that we celebrate the quintessential Kiwi summer dish fish and chips and today we're gonna hit up five of the best fish and chips shops and often [Music] so what am I looking for in a good fish and chip well firstly the fish the fish has to be firm flaky and moist on the inside while the batter should be light crispy and golden brown on the outside without being too greasy and the chips should be slightly crispy on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside for fair scientific comparison today we're gonna be getting snapper for the fish at every chippy that we go to with that being said let's go [Music] our first stop is the fish and chip shop at the corner of Market Road and great South Road in Epsom although they also have branches in Sandringham in west near they've won numerous awards over the years and have established themselves as one of Auckland's best a true neighbourhood classic well the take aways is actually pretty close to our house it's only like a two minute drive so I think we're gonna take this home meet mom and dad there pick them up and eat it there so let's go so welcome to our backyard guys if you can see here the fish and chips shop actually does their fish a bit differently so we opted in for some panko breading which we had to try out because I don't think any other fish and chips shop does it and if you haven't noticed already my good friends Heinz aioli garlic sauce and Heinz tomato sauce we're gonna go full Asian today and gonna bring these along with us so we don't have to buy sauce because it's bit of a a bit expensive but let's get in let's dig it so here we've got the fish some nice golden-brown snapper oh that batter feels really crispy let's try it out that batter really crispy the panko lends such a nice light crisp to it and that snapper is perfectly firm perfectly moist perfectly seasoned very nice okay time for the chips they look pretty golden brown pretty nice not the crispiest but you know it's your standard takeaways chips really fluffy and soft on the inside actually I like it perfectly salted add some ketchup you know perfect the setup is the big next row but you know you gotta get it and you gotta do it for the good shot potatoes come on come on I heard that diet but like no it's so nice like it's one of the nicest fish and chips I've had I'm not I'm not even doing there's only our first walk we're also a really good start here guys next up is green woods fresh catch owned by the lovely couple of Thomas and Lillian they are absolutely passionate about perfecting the art of fish and chips it seems to be everyone's favorite neighborhood joint from locals and even tourists alike so let's see what the fuss is all about second stop is green woods fresh catch like walking in to the green woods you can just feel like it's such a neighborhood institution you can see all the awards and all the newspaper articles know hanging up in the wall and we had a chat with the with the owner and they were really nice so basically obviously got the same thing chips and some snapper fillets and let's get into it now let's get into the fish the batter looks really golden and crispy and let's try it out that better pretty crispy actors I think it's moister than the one we had a while ago oh hello oh my party chips your maybe grish I like it I like the batter's really nice thank you so what what makin see now you can put it that's you - if only we had a Govinda today no choice yeah because my shop is very popular yeah I feel like the fishes a bit softer than the other one it's a bit moister it's really not it's really different from the other one actually even though they're both just snapper fillets let's get into the chips there a bit there's slightly thinner cut than the other one but still like you know your normal takeaway fish and chips chip cut but no nothing special about that crispy still moist on the inside the salt chip can't complain Green was fresh catch I can totally see why this is a neighborhood institution this is this is a very solid very solid fish and chips man we're on a roll here can't wait for the next one our third spot brings us to the lovely Mount Eden village fish shop this place has been open since 1939 so you know that this chippy has a dedicated following this place also serves as a dedicated fishmonger and most if not everything on display can be cooked to order so when we weren't getting our order the guy said oh snap refer to well we want to order the snapper for one so not sure if he gave us a bigger one I don't know this looks like too good for two people for me anyway this is from the mountain village fish and chip shop which is also a neighborhood institution in not Eden first impressions this is like the most golden fish and chips I've ever seen look at it this is like gold bullion right here it looks glistening so can't wait to try it out okay let's get into the fish first look how smooth that skin is actually I'm not exaggerating this is like the most golden fish I have ever seen so take a chunk taste hmm it's a bit drier than the rest lecture the batter is really thin and crispy not as flavorful as green woods green was really nice actually but this bit dry actually so good well you know you can feel you can feel like the individual strands in the flesh hmm man that batter is actually paper thing this is actually kind of a good thing it's not that greasy mmm has a really like crunch to it which is pretty nice yeah the fish is a bit drier onto the chips this already looks really promising and every we've already eaten some and it was really good is really crispy crispier than any in the previously obviously I mean just by the color of this chip you can already tell how crispy this is mmm it's really nice I cook best chip so far sum it up really nice paper thin better slightly dry fish crispiest chips we've had so far also to know most expensive one so far at $15 but then again he did give us he did give a snapper for two so he kind of gave us that free up sighs and that I think this would have been 30 dollars which is really pricey so you know not sure if it's best worth the best value for your money but still pretty solid efficient ship our next stop fish myth in Herne Bay isn't your average takeaway shop they serve several key we take away classics while also offering delicious unconventional items like veggie burgers panko halloumi and even fish tacos all in a hip and modern setting okay fourth place fish Smith vomits a really new and modern take even from the intere you can tell this is not your average takeaway we're pretty you know a modern and hip in a hip area so face the fish that's really nice that batter is really crispy and golden brown and the fish is also really moist tender slightly sweet I really like the doctor on to the chips as far as I'm aware they double fry their chips so let's see how it tastes really soft moist coffee on the inside slightest scripts crisp to it I really like this you can really tell the double fry you know let's add a really nice quality dippin into sudden aioli sauce arguably the best fry sauce there is you can find me to want if you want but I will fight as equally hard back look what we have here not vinegar this is really traditional in England but I don't think it's really much of a thing often so I've never actually try this on the chart put some there you know it's vinegar so intimate you know that sourness that's a bit of a sweet slightly sweet tang to it Oh actually complements the fish really nicely you know I must say Chris Smith I feel is the most balanced of all the ones we've visited so far the fishes obviously not as sweet as green woods but it's still more flavorful than the other two we have the batter really golden brown crispy light not too greasy perfect the fries really nice double fried they from going on there I really appreciate that and you know that's fine all right we're just gonna finish this up and now it's on to the last one last but not least the sea cow on the bay located in the main strip of Mission Bay unlike most takeaways there is ample space to dine in but considering your stone's throw away from the beautiful beach I don't really see why you would final stop seek out the bad Mission Bay funnily enough the only fish and chips shop that is right next to see we're here at beautiful Mission Bay today right at the Sun and you know Oakland Oakland lacks a lot of fish and chips near the sea so luckily here we are see town code a final stop that's good [Music] until this fish tastes different from everything else hmm all right that's nice that was really carefully light first feet not greasy this is really no this is really moist Lilly's firm it's really fall apart actually it's like slightly butter it really must in your mouth but you can steal because you can still feel the texture of the fish get all into the fries first thing you notice the only shoestring fries that we've had so far you know it's just messing with tradition I don't know that's up for you to decide so let's taste it you know it ain't a McDonald's fry that's for sure it's okay nothing much to scream about but you know it's all right no this needs a bit of sauce the fries are kind of bland so much better so that does it for today guys my body is absolutely packed with grease like I can feel the pores leaking oil right now but you know let's give it the rundown every shop that we went to was actually pretty good all five we're the best efficient chests I've ever had not sure if that just goes to show how bad all the fish and chips I've had in my life you know all of them are really solid you had the fish and chips shop which had the interesting panko breading going on it had solid fish and it had solid chips Greenwoods gotta say best-tasting fish it was a sweetest you know it had but it was really thin the batter was really nice and the chips were really good solid too and then next up Mount Eden village fish shop oh no I got a save but disappointed with that one especially considering how overpriced it was at $30 for the portion that we received you know it had the best ships though really crispy and but the fish slightly dry kind of disappointing actually then fish Schmidt I was really surprised by this one I was really looking forward to it as well you know ahead I feel like to me it had the best balance of fish really tender and moist and flavorful really really good better and solid chips then you had sea cow on the bay surprised at how big the portion was actually a but you know messing with tradition over there with the shoestring fries so it don't know how to feel about that and we also had they were okay you know there are okay chips and okay fish so if I had to choose what actually it would definitely be the fish Smith just the balance all the components the batter the fish and the chips and even the atmosphere of the restaurant was really nice so I gotta say that was was my favorite you know shout out to green woods as well shadow to the fish and chip shop this were also completely completely good and completely worth your money as well well so that does it for today guys I hope you guys enjoyed
