today I'm going to show you how to make a soft wax using carnuba I have a very popular video up with DIY soft wax and have gotten great reviews but I want to add this recipe because this has carnuba which is a harder wax so it will give you more stain resistance carnauba is also in many commercial waxes because it is a harder wax and it will give you more stain resistance this is also a non toxic wax so it can be used around animals and children and it can be applied indoors and you can even use it on your skin that is how safe it is one of the most popular commercial waxes has a turpentine smell to it and they say to use it outdoors this wax is not like that you can use this indoors as much as you want at the end of this video we will also do a stain resistance test and compare this wax to a very popular commercial wax there are only three ingredients in this baby oil or mineral oil carnuba wax and beeswax and you will need a canning jar that can be put into hot boiling water this wax will cost you less than five dollars to make versus twenty-five dollars for the same amount of commercial wax it has the same ingredients less and this is a non toxic wax add 1/8 cup of carnauba wax 1/4 cup of beeswax lastly add 1 and 1/3 cup of baby oil or mineral oil it will look like this all of the pellets will be at the bottom of the jar using a tall saucepan put the jar in there and then add water until it is about a quarter of an inch below the web of the oil if you overfill it your jar will float so be careful set your heat on medium-high and be ready to stand over and watch the wax cook for about 10 to 15 minutes the wax really won't start to melt until the water has started to boil so just keep a watch on it until it starts to boil as you start to see bubbles forming on the bottom of the pan you can start to stir it a little bit at this stage I stir the wax every minute or two just to keep the temperature of the oil kind of even obviously the oil and the water are very hot so use a long utensil like a knife or this is a teaspoon as the water gets close to a boiling point your wax pellets will look something like this and they will just get smaller and smaller as the temperature gets hotter once the water gets to a rapid boil the pellets are going to start to melt pretty quick so I'm still stirring every minute or two when it starts to do this I've got one little holdout pellet left to melt as soon as this is done we can take it off the heat so this is what it should look like when all the pellets are melted it's just a clear oil take your pot off the burner and just let it sit set a timer for 30 minutes and just let it cool down before you do anything else with it get a metal bowl or another pan and take a pot holder and put the oil into that other container and add ice to it until it is up to the level of the oil and then add water again till it's about a half-inch below of the level of the oil once it's in the ice it will start to cool down pretty quick and you will start to see some white along the edges of the jar when you see a white rim of wax start to form you're going to want to put the lid on your jar and you're going to want to start shaking this up shake it up for 30 to 60 seconds and then put it back in the water you'll want to come back every two minutes or so and shake it up again for 30 seconds the reason we do this is because if you don't when the wax cooled off it would be somewhat separated and it would be not really usable for furniture so you just want to make sure that it all stays mixed up and as it cools it will stay just this way if it still moves when you tilt the jar and it sounds like this it's not done yet it is ready no sound no sound anymore so it is ready that's what it looks like this is all the way cooled off down in the center there's still some that is not quite as cold as the rest we can take this out of the cold water and stop shaking it because it cannot be shaken any more now that my wax is room temperature let's take a look at it it's very workable and soft this can be brushed on or it can be rubbed on and just for comparison this is a commercial wax a fairly expensive one and it has about the same consistency now you'll notice that my wax is a little bit darker than this wax both of them have carnuba I suspect my wax has more carnuba you can make less carnuba in your wax cut it in half and then add that much back in the beeswax pellets and you will still have carnuba and you will have less yellow but it is surprisingly how little it changes the color I like to use kind of a palette for my wax but you can just dip it out of your jar if your brush will fit in your jar if not you can do something like this or put it in a wider mouth jar so you can run your brush to do this like that so brush it on [Music] and then just like commercial wax you just wipe off the excess when you wipe off your wax I recommend always using a cloth that is close to the color of your paint because fibers will come off your towel into your painted furniture so black specks from a cloth would not look good on this the biggest reason I don't buy a wax brush is because after you paint your wax on you're gonna wipe it off anyway so what kind of brush you used to get it on there or in what manner you put it on really doesn't matter it matters how you wipe it off so I use a cheap paintbrush for wax you also can use a cloth to wipe your wax on which I actually prefer I think it's faster and I like the control that I get and I like that I can kind of do it I can wipe it on and wipe it off at the same time I've got wax on one side and dry on the other so I can just wipe it as I get when I don't have to come back I'm gonna do half this dresser in wax and the other half I'm going to leave unwaxed so you can see the color change in the paint if any with this wax I'm gonna go ahead and put a little bit of this other commercial clear wax on here so we can see if it changes the color of the paint it seems like there would be a little bit of a difference from the colors of the two waxes but if there is it's not very noticeable I think because the wax goes on so thin you don't really see the little bit of color that's in there here's what it looks like on the front the right side has the DIY wax and the left side does not and again the color looks pretty close to the same just has some shine to it thank you for watching please don't forget to Like and subscribe and leave a comment if there's a video you would like to see please send me a mess or post in the comments and maybe I will do it thank you
