Bergen County Academies - Senior Awards Ceremony 2021

[Music] good evening seniors welcome class of 2021 to our annual senior awards ceremony well you know all of our seniors are the best but tonight we are honoring the best of the best those who have risen above in what is easily one of the most unusual school years in the history of school years and yet the attendees tonight who will be awarded did everything they could to rise above all of this year's craziness but you did it you are at the end of this year we are here to celebrate you tonight so welcome to a very very special evening and we hope you enjoy and now our flag salute i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all and now the singing of our national anthem oh say can you see by the dawn's early light what so proudly we held at the twilight's last gleaming whose brought stripes and bright stars through the perilous [Music] were so gallantly streaming and bursting in air gave proof through the night that her flag was still there oh say does that star spangled [Music] the bread [Music] good evening family friends and students it is my absolute pleasure to be here this evening to present the woodridge memorial foundation scholarship award and that award for 2021 goes to christian tege congratulations christian the decosta is awarded to the student who plans to major in the arts in college and whose dedication to an excellence in theater and other art forms best exemplifies linda decosta's passion for the arts this year the award goes to vivi aiello i am proud to award the 2021 joe holbrook memorial scholarships to jongwon zhang gregory polipovic and simon sun we are andrea and roger devries and our son dan was a graduate of the culinary academy in 2002 when he passed away in 2008 we decided that the best way to honor his memory was to create a scholarship to honor students who display his attributes of hard work and helping others this year we're very pleased to award this fifteen hundred dollar scholarship to a student who displays these qualities she has shown exceptional leadership has worked hard academically and expressed a genuine love of learning the recipient of this year's daniel de breeze memorial scholarship is francesca mcnano congratulations congratulations joseph marquez was a student in the bergen county academy's class of 2007. his strength of character and positive influence on all who knew him made joey a very special part of our community in november of 2005 joey died after a long battle with cancer his friends peers and classmates from the class of 2007 chose to honor joey's memory by establishing an annual scholarship in his name the joseph marquez memorial scholarship is awarded each year to a graduating senior who is recognized by the school community as an individual of leadership service and character they also need to be a positive influence on peers as well as younger students this year the 2021 joseph marquez scholarship is awarded to melissa oskan congratulations for two decades dr david osfeld was a beloved chemistry teacher the chairperson for bca's admissions committee and a valued colleague this year the david osfeld memorial scholarship is awarded to kayla williams and thomas king congratulations my name is erica roger oak and i'm a bca class of 2001 aast alumni and i'm presenting the muriel roger award on behalf of my family the muriel roger award was created to honor my grandmother muriel roger and her love of music it is given to a bca student who has enriched his or her community through music this year i'm pleased to announce that the recipient for the muriel roger award is violinist dylan homm congratulations dylan good evening everyone my name is jeffrey butler and i'm here to present the marcus a wilson 24 forever scholarship marcus that i met in august 1985 as incoming freshmen at the first incarnation of this high school and quickly became lifelong best friends we went through all the things that you go through from being 15 years old to adults with children and families i was the best man at his wedding godfather to each other's children and in august of 2018 he lost marcus to cancer so when faced with that and understanding that i wanted to keep his legacy alive and for people to remember how much he touched people's lives and how instrumental he was in impacting everyone he came in contact with jen his widow and i made the decision that we wanted to start this scholarship at our alma mater and we did so the first award was in 2019 and we continue to do this annually and every year we seek to find a student who best embodies the things that marcus stood for he loved technology he had a passion for business a passion for serving and helping those in the community around him so every year we go through this process of asking the administration here to whittle down some candidates that they think um best represent who we're trying to honor and recognize in this year was a very difficult choice we had two final two finalists and ultimately had to make a tough decision on who we thought was the most deserving of of this award and um it's not a slight to anyone um marcus was a complicated individual at times hugely funny um so to put us in a position where every year we have to make this choice is something probably he would find pretty humorous and that we have to go through this process to ultimately keep his legacy alive but also how hard it is in deciding between such worthy people to represent him so um this year the recipient of the marcus a wilson 24 forever scholarship on behalf of jennifer wilson derek olivia and malik wilson we are honoring evan nicholas with this award and congratulations mr nichols good evening my name is erica conway on behalf of the board of the academy for culinary arts and hospitality administration parent association i am so excited to present our annual scholarship our academy is like a family so we are so proud of each and every senior who has had this special experience with chef jay and chef b in okaha tonight we especially congratulate lindsay palavoy whose essay on how akaha has impacted her life earned her this very special award thank you so much hello everyone my name is priyanka kumar and on behalf of the to award three aedt seniors with 250 scholarships on tuesday may 18th at the conclusion of our virtual senior panel we drew three names from our aedt members each senior was awarded one entry per year academy student whose efforts contributed significantly to the success of their child the award is being supported by sachin jane class of 1998 in honor of his mother sarla jane whose sustained hyun kwen and it's an honor for me to recognize my dad cook chen quinn with the sarla jane award for as long as i can remember my dad has always put me before himself being my number one supporter no learn and promote the spanish language the first one goes to teva allan for his deep curiosity and enjoyment of spanish the second one goes to aiden nguyen the 2021 award for french goes to someone whose speaking and writing skills have been consistently outstanding since day one it is my pleasure to present this award to peter middlemen this world language award goes to a student who has put consistent effort into learning mandarin from the time he was a freshman with the hope that he will continue to explore his passion for the language the 2021 award for mandarin goes to russell rivera the 2021 award for excellence in biology research in the structural and cell biology research lab is given to patrick davek good evening it's been a very unusual year in bio research as the students found it necessary to transition from the wet lab to bioinformatics to answer their scientific questions learning those new skills took some time but the research students went on to add to our body of knowledge as well as represent bca as they always do in a very successful fashion the seniors i am recognizing tonight however while bringing home many accolades themselves took on a new more important role in the lab they emerged as mentors to the underclassmen i have greatly appreciated the role they played in assisting their younger peers for this reason i am acknowledging logan bihari michael gomez emily hasham wu young lara oscan vivek rajani and ryan shake thank you so much and good evening [Music] the chemistry research award on behalf of dr kim goes to anna mata pairo congratulations and the recipients for the 2021 creative writing research awards are for her commitment to her craft her dedication to growing as an artist and their support of our classmates eva ishikova and for her pure passion for creative writing catherine vandermell hi it's mr fogg faculty advisor for the avf fed challenge team and i'm here to share the recipients of this year's abf fed challenge award this year's fed challenge team despite the obstacles posed by the coven pandemic demonstrated a collective commitment to excellence in economic research the 2021 fed challenge award events and online however without the students that make up the lab there would not be any content to share this year we're graduating two seniors who have played major roles in lab over the last three years vivian tan has been our lead editor for the last two years and there isn't a single project that comes through here that she hasn't had some kind of impact on caitlyn park has become our evening the bergen side challenge middle school science fair took place this year very successfully we drew nearly 100 young middle school students from across the state this would not have been possible without our student directors for this reason mrs stott and i would like to recognize emily hasham for her tremendous efforts in guiding this endeavor thank you very much emily and good evening [Music] the 2021 debate awards go to two individuals who have made invaluable contributions to the success of the bca debate team this year and these awards go to ethan donovan and erica cho [Music] congratulations [Music] the french honors society award goes to an outstanding student who is as generous with the time she devotes to our society as she is with her deep insights in class it's my pleasure to present this award to elizabeth matthews [Music] the 2021 award for junior state of america goes to eric cho [Music] the 2021 math team awards are given to lin jigao jongwon jung jessica lee gregory pilipovic simon sun vivian tan and jonathan wong [Music] [Music] [Music] as the peer leadership organization of the bergen county academies spark has built a reputation for providing service and support to all members of our community like so many others this year spark was challenged in providing the same level of service however we were able to do so because of the hard work and dedication of two of our most outstanding senior members it is my honor to present the 2021 peer leadership award to carissa liu and vivek rajani [Music] hi everyone i would like to recognize this year's winners for the club award for relay for life students have always worked hard in this club and this year i would like to honor michael gomez and carissa liu two fantastic students i've enjoyed working with very much [Music] this year's soccer for our hope club award goes to noam greenstein and william d martini thank you for your help over the years guys [Music] congratulations the spanish honor society award goes to a student who exudes her love of the culture and principles of a truly multicultural world i am pleased to present this award to amal [Music] the 2021 yearbook award goes to joy zhang congratulations [Music] there are so many great things about our student gia her but did you know that she is getting the community service award tonight how do you get that award well we log your community service hours as you know but we also count them and we went in and looked at the top honoree and that is you gia because you volunteered for 872 hours what a beautiful beautiful accomplishment congratulations to gia herr and now has come the time for one of the most important awards and that is the vice principles award so as vice principal i am proud to honor one of our seniors who time and time again has been a step above the rest her unique contributions to our community have not gone unnoticed and tonight the vice principals award goes to priya agarwal congratulations priya [Music] the following students have been selected by their teachers as a student who best represents their academy in work ethic and spirit it is my pleasure to isabella castillo avpa visual caitlyn park [Music] congratulations [Music] [Music] [Music] in many high schools there are typically one or two students who obtain a perfect gpa and in a rigorous school such as ours it is quite an accomplishment i'm happy to announce that the following seniors have maintained a 4.0 gpa throughout their four years at bca we recognize their achievement through this award for academic excellence riesling conway michael gomez lynn j gal wunjin lee lara ozkan caitlin park aiden parkhurst lindsey polivoy and c1 sun [Music] congratulations [Music] [Music] tonight's final award the principles award gives me great pleasure to present the principal's award for lena mamon from her earliest days at bca lena involved herself in our school community lena has taken on leadership roles and activities that interest her and benefit others i was pleased when lena was elected president of our student council it is in this capacity that i came to know lina well her term began in january of 2020 just months before the coveted crisis determined to make the best of a difficult situation lena became my link to our students we met frequently on zoom and lena always communicated student concerns with maturity and wisdom beyond her years under her leadership our student council did so much to lift the spirits of our students and staff as we worked remotely she helped keep students informed of updates and our outreach went a long way toward helping our school community feel connected and heard during quarantine congratulations lena ladies and gentlemen this concludes tonight's ceremony i would like to thank mrs cabba and mr spinelli for organizing this event our senior class advisors mrs berwick and mr boninomi and of course mr lang for producing this virtual senior awards ceremony parents on behalf of our entire staff we thank you for choosing the burton county academies with your child it has been our privilege to work with such an amazing
