Ben Barnes & Jessie Mei Li talk about the end of Shadow and Bone & Darklina

[Music] hi hi Elena um so Jess first of all I absolutely agree I would have loved to see Sean storm and Ru and RIS to be adapted properly and see more of Alina um and that's also why I wanted to ask the question if there are any scenes from those books that didn't make it into the show that you would have loved to adapt especially scenes between your characters like basically the whole books well we obviously because of the nature of the show and there's so many characters like we had they had to lose a lot of the storyline I mean I think we were both we were both grown up about it but I think we were both really disappointed about how you know the relationship changed from the books to the I wasn't grown enough about it he wasn't so grown enough about it um but you know obviously they wanted to explore different themes they were wanting to explore themes of trauma and stuff so they decided to go a different way with it but I think there are so many amazing scenes between the two of them and I love cuz yeah I think the concern was that the relationship's toxic and they didn't want to glamorize it but the problem is that we in art in literature in films like we can explore these things in a safe way and I thought it was a shame not to explore this toxic relationship because it's something that is relatable and that people understand and people want to read about want to watch um so yeah there was quite a few quite a few scenes that would have been great for us I think it's a shame we tried we tried to sort of sneak in sneaky sneaky we tried to sort of sneak stuff in there because I think in the books they obviously have this sort of like dream tether in in the second and third books and you're being a bit Saucy in your dreams aren't you some of them oh yeah the Saucy dreams Saucy dreams but I think and but I think it was important to me to make sure that it did spoilers it was important to me that it did feel kind of toxic because that's that's what we're telling a story about so I think when I had those little moments of like there was a scene where I just have to like go in and blow and and snuff out a candle but I tried to make it really creepy so that so that you to kind of make up for all the stuff that wasn't in there you know what I mean like so sometimes this the way you do something small can be suggestive of you know bigger scenes that aren't necessarily there I think one of your jobs an actor is to like take as much as you can from the source material and imbue whatever you are asked to deliver with it you know yeah thanks so much right [Music] [Music] [Music] hi hello Let Go for both of you so if another season had been made would you like to see a different ending than the books for both of the characters both in the way that they interact with each other in the future and then as individuals as well as in so if there was another season would I like to change how the book ended y h interesting yes what would you do then I'd do a complete swap out of you take the powers right but then Something's Happened and I get the sunlight powers and then I'm suddenly a Force for good and you're just evil and torturous and then we're war and then we're Waring again but like love Waring love War I like it um do you know what when I kind of Revisited the books after season 2 I actually I actually like Del's ending in some ways I didn't like that she lost her powers but I think I love the fact that the powers were given to all the normal people I just love that as a concept like not one person should hold all the power so I really loved that about that ending I was really sad that we miss so much from those books um so yeah I kind of like it if Elina and Ma got to have their happy ending but she did still have a little little just a little bit of sunow you know we shot this this actually we did do a shot which I was really advocating for which isn't in in it she's so bored of hearing about this but but we did do a shot where I was kind of holding Jesse's wrist and you were supposed to see like my power like pass to her like like essentially like I knew I was about to succumb and I knew I knew she was going to kill me so I wanted to like give her my power as I died so because I knew she would need it cuz she couldn't you I know I you know being being alive for that long you know that you're actually going to need it to the dark and the light in order to be able to like and I I was like maybe she she is the one who can do this in a way that I never could and I thought there was something really beautiful about that but it's not in there so who what what can you do was a good question for um so it's a question about El in the show but both of you can answer so no wor then um so the Never So the ending of season two is a little bit different from the book so I was wondering um do you think Elina would have overcome the meos and if not what would happen in the future well I don't really know what the writers were planning but I was really thinking you know just to try to make sense of the script and where it was going I was like feeling that Alina was going to go she going to go dark you know that's what I was imagining for third season that she was going to because I think her journey was all about you know having to deal with all of the all the pressure and sometimes that makes you go the wrong way and I was really excited to explore darkening it's a shame such a shame [Music] [Music]
