We were planning on having the volunteers do one or two laps on each of the bikes today. To kind of break them in, get some
of the cables stretching and then the tracking guy is showing up in the morning. So this is going to get rutted out and we can rake that if you want it to be a little bit softer. Okay. Will do. Yeah! Go Dave! Go Dave! The reason I was able to do that is because I know how to go over sand on a motorcycle. Put your weight back. Yeah Justin. Work it. Work it. Put the weight in the front! [laughing] -You see what you did wrong?
-Got on the bike. [laughing] We're going to have him ride the course to give us some really agressive times. To see what a pro can do. Second, I think it's going to be a good opportunity for some media capture. What's he going to do though? Is he going to do one lap or is he going to do the three laps for time? We're definitely going to do a time trial lap—which is going to be the one lap—after that we'll do some work with the obstacles and see if we have to change the course. Then, if he's ready for it, we'll do three laps and
see what the total time is. And I was like, "He'll do it tasteful?"
Not tasteful. -That was great.
-I wasn't recording. I think you were doing seven-minute laps, so you think ten minute laps would be a good time? -That wasn't seven. That was 5:40.
-Holy shhhhh -Wow.
-5:45. I bet like six and a half, seven minute laps is probably what you'd expect. -He wants to race you now.
-What'd you get? -I think 5:45.
-Okay cool. 5:43. [laughing] Let's do a hot lap! Would you be able to maintain that pace for all three laps that you were doing? No way. No way. If I'm with a group of other people, I think the first lap is good to sort out position... The last couple of sections are sort of technical, so if you get out in front before everyone else that's where the race will be won. -So on Wednesday we do the time trial, right?
-Right, right, right. And we have 1-40 times. We'll say, "Number One, pick your spot." -And they get to pick.
-Five, five, and five. And then so twenty one through forty go
in a separate one. Yes. By themselves. -Oh wow.
-So you put the fastest riders together. -Yeah. So time trial matters a lot?
-Time trial matters a lot. -And that's how it should be. Right?
-Sure. Yeah. -This is three extra 45s.
-Three extra 45s? -Can you pull this?
-Yeah I can pull it, because I put it there. I don't need proof. Save that for later.
[laughing] I can't bring them back, though. [laughing] -How much is that, Stephane?
-Two hundred, each hand. Four hundred total. Nice Rory, nice. -Is it heavy?
-Uh, yeah. -How do you think someone like Josh Bridges will do?
-Fine, actually. It's not that heavy. -Graham's going to do it.
-Okay. You got three objects, the yoke, the farmer's carry,
and the sled. It's up to you what order you want to move them in. You got to move
one of them past the second line. So sixty feet. -Leave it there.
-Doesn't matter which one? -It doesn't matter. Then you're going
to handstand walk back. Nice Graham! -I can taste that in my mouth.
-I'm at a bad angle. -Is that sunscreen?
-It's tanning oil. It's just heavy as shit. Do you think there's any use to going
straight through on your first run? I thought about it, once you said it. I kind of didn't realize you said that at the beginning. But my heart rate was way more jacked than I thought, from the yoke and the logs. Feet are on fire. -From trying to grip?
-I think just from pushing. You're pushing with the sled. You got so much weight on your frame with the carry–both of the carries. Just think about how pissed off a rabid
dragon would be. A dragon with rabies. -I fee like rabies is reserved for mammals.
-Well dragons could be a mammal in some stories. Maybe. Rabid dragon! I don't think it's possible. I think that's a
mammal disease. I just think it's a good
name for a gun. Or a band? The Rabid Dragon? -Sounds like a dive bar.
-Or brothel. Let's assume the dragon's possible. If the dragon is possible, can a dragon have rabies? -Hey, didn't Cujo have rabies?
-How do you get rabies? Stephane almost aced his SATs. He was two questions off, so he's a smart man. -Oohhh!
-What'd he say? -The heat would kill the virus.
-All right. There you go. -Wouldn't the heat stimulate?
-It might promote growth. All the way through, guys. Come on! Slow down, Paul! Last round. Come on! -Dave. Do you want us to carry out?
-Carry it out. Wait until we're all here and set. No! No! -Ready?
-Wait! -Wait!
-He's not ready. Sorry. Ready? 3...2...1...Go! Down! -Five!
-Down! -Twenty three.
-Down! -Twenty nine. [panting and yelling] -Thirty!
-Drop it! Time! -12:35.
-Wow. Demo Team. It'll be
fun, they said. [laughing] -It was fun.
-I don't believe anyone said that. "Demo Team. It'll be fun, they said." You'll get a paid of shoes, they said. [laughing] This is so light, guys. I think we'll have 30% of the field capped. That's my guess. So 30% of the field would be 12? And then they have to pick it up and carry it back in one minute plus the
two minute walk off. It took that crew about a minute-fifty. -Look like you're thinking.
-Okay. That's a good one. Are you a photograph now? Is Dave a photograph now? Is this what's happening? Hello. Como se va? -How we doing?
-Good. Not so bad. Yeah. Ready to
get stared. -Done training for it.
-Can I work in real quick? -Overhead press?
-Yeah, yeah. Are you going to do some lifts or something? -Right now?
-Yeah. Like everyone else? -No.
-I didn't think so. [laughing] -People are going heavy over there.
-I know. I told them that I went heavy. -Yeah and they listened. They're like, "If Mat did it..."
-I went 305 this morning. -How are you doing? You ready?
-Yeah. Well I hope so. This is going to be epic. -Yeah, it's going to be a blast. It's going to be really fun.
-Just with all the water and the bike ride stuff. It's so pretty, too. I heard Rob's a professional mountain biker or something? -I think he was in motocross.
-Okay. Everyone's talking about him being a mountain biker. -And we're just going to keep with that.
-People think he's a professional mountian biker. [laughing] -Is that a Rogue hat?
-No, it's my hat. It's his hat. But Rogue makes this for me. I made the logo,
but they made the hat. -How dare you. This is his hat.
-Do you want one? That was awkward. I hope you got that on camera. Sup Ben? -Oh hey guys. How you doing?
-Great. -Just trying to find our bearings here.
-New building. -You don't give him like a special—he was the champ.
-I know. But he didn't make an effort to get a special. I guess what I'm saying is that I'm surprised that you didn't go over and shake his hand. -I'm tapering off.
-Like Cami got a lot of attention. Oh yeah, that's great. That's a great shot. Look at hime go. He is good. -He losses it here though.
-Pfft. He sucks. [laughing] -Yeah, hitting the apex.
-See that looks beautiful there. I need to give it to Broadcast. They keep going, "We haven't seen the course." -Do you want to take it?
-Put it on that? That's the finish platform that stays in the entire time. -This is our side.
-Yep. -This will get cleaned up.
-Yep. -That's where the athletes come from.
-Yes. -We should practice lighting. See if we can get that right.
-Sherry's our lighting contact and she was working on some stuff last night, so maybe this afternoon? This is going to be an awesome athlete walk out. -Between now and Friday at 7:15, nobody can see that.
-Gotcha. And I'll announce the event and then you'll have the rest of the time–30 minutes to bring them all out. Okay. -What do you think about the new venue?
-I think it's great. I mean, the biggest challenge was the O-Course, but other than that, it's really nice. The interior here–plus, to be honest people seem happy with the city. The fact that they can ride a bike or run and stuff like that, you know? Other than that, morale's really good. -Were you nervous about a new location?
-No. We had the other one figured out completely. So we got here early and we've been working on figuring out all the logistical trails and things like that. -We're good to go. -Is this the biggest Games ever, in terms of equipment?
-Yes. This is more equipment than we've ever brought to the CrossFit Games before. -Forty semi trucks.
-Forty? I think there's one extra coming today. Is there one just for shipping for Dave? Just one semi of just Dave's stuff? -I think all forty one.
-Are all Dave's? Yeah, they're all Dave's stuff. This is rad. This looks great. You got a bar muscle-up
on demand? -On demand?
-On demand! Masters age, huh? -Slippery.
-Yeah he does! Damn! -Do four on each bar.
-Hey you said one. [laughing] -One at each bar!
-Nice! You got it, Chuck. Someone's going to wat to front-release. -See what I mean? Like can one of these do it? You're not going to be straight out, though right? -You need a boost?
-Oh it is slick. Where's the chalk? You have really good bar muscle-ups. What are you talking about? I tweaked my shoulder. If you're staying in the hip crease, you're fine. The biggest issue that I was going to tell you–that one goes straight in. Like right to the edge. That one doesn't, though. I tried with that. Just drop it from there. Those are amazing. -Has anyone seen these?
-The first ever. That one just goes right over. Every time I've done it, it goes right over. No bueno. Cheese curd. -It turned out pretty good, I thought.
-Yeah. It's really bright. Yeah, it'll work great on the field. Line one, line two, line three? -Stand over him.
-So the question is... -Squat.
-Come on, bro. -You got five hay bales.
-Yes. -Do you want them using one, two, and three?
-Yes, one, two and three. Got it. So the last two will just be jumpers. Okay. This is too long, so I did... Perfect in case you have allergies. Ball over and burpee over? 1:26 for 11 reps after. Let's see how long this takes. I want both of you to do it at the same time and manage being in the same lane. This year, most workouts will begin on a matt,
just like at Regionals. And most events will end when you've crossed
a red finish line. If you fail to meet the time cap for an event, there will be a one rep penalty for any rep not completed plus the cap designation for not finishing. Any questions on the general rules and
expectations of competition? You guys feel pretty good? Great. -I found his movie character look-a-like.
-Josh Bridges? Curly Bill from Tombstone. You should have printed out an 8x10
and stuck it on his locker. -That's a fantastic idea.
-So what do you guys do now? We are going to stroll the grounds, look at the obstacle course. They're going to let us run through it for five minutes, and then that's pretty much it. We have the rest of the day off until we get dinner. -Do you know what this is?
-This is a bra pad, isn't it? Did this come from your uniform? Oh you have it? So I actually thought about this
this morning: Maybe I should sell these, like sign them and sell these. Smells good. [laughing] -Do you always pull those out?
-I don't need the extra padding. Unless someone was going to punch me in the breast. I'm going to stop talking now because I don't know what I'm saying. -How many Games have you been to?
-This is my fourth. What's different about being here–number four–
than the other ones? You know what? I don't know what it is–I have a lot of hipster predilections, but I definitely feel like the vibe is a lot more chill. I feel like this is where something like the Games, fitness, and the celebration of fitness... This is where it should be. -What's a hipster trait that you have?
-Oh god. I own vinyl. I have a record player. Because that's the way music should
be listened to, right? We'll continue. If you are competing in the heat that is getting ready to go out ontp the floor your declared coach can be with you in this
warmup area, as well. When we're leaving here we'll have two options. One is the shuttle bus that runs the
perimeter of this thing for those that get done and don't feel like walking back. Get on the bus. The bus will take you back down. -Be nice to me.
-I am nice to you. -It's coach Bailey.
-So I've heard. -How many years have you been to the CrossFit Games?
-This is my fourth year. -What's different this year than any other years?
-I mean I like all of the events that have been announced so far. How they're being scored, you know. This isn't their first time running one of these. All right, if you guys would turn around
and head back that way. We're going to go to the obstacle course. Do you think there's anyone who doesn't know how to ride a bike? I think it's possible, but I would think that it would be very silly to not have gotten on a bike from when they posted that video a long time ago when they made the custom bikes. I just started hopping on a bike once
a week, just in case. Sara, do they have bikes in Iceland? I don't think so, right? -We don't have any bikes.
-Just sleds. We live in snow houses, so why would we have a bike? We only have snow sleds. -Tennis racquets on your shoes, right?
-Yeah, tennis racquets on your shoes. Were you doing some riding in Cookeville? I was. I was cruising. So Senior made a special mountain bike loop for us. -No way. He built one?
-Yeah, yeah. -That's crazy.
-It's so fun. Of course he did. He does everything for us. Now you know how Rich will be like, "Just refer to him as Dad." -Yes.
-Kind of like they do that in the South. The way they use that term. But it's like he isn't my dad. -But I call him Dad.
-You do? You call him Dad? -He's my dad.
-Awesome. -Do you ever call him daddy?
-Too far. I think Cookeville is so good because there's nothing there. Just like in Iceland, you can just train and it's a little bit better weather. You kind of have to take a little bit of a chance.
I mean, if you're going to win. You look like you have experience on the obstacle course. You were moving great. Thank you. Okay. It's nice to hear that. Yeah, the cargo net? The dismount from the top? -Yeah?
-The flip. Is that your gymnastics coming through? Gymnastic enters a lot of activity, from
a young age I guess. Hey, don't let them do that, Boz. Don't let them go back that way. That could have been ugly. Come on, you gotta do the whole course. We're going to change it slightly. You must touch the first bar on the monkey bars and then both hands on the last bar. Up and over, same thing. You guys have all felt that that's pretty high, so again we're giving you– it's on you. You guys are big boys. You're releasing from really far, there. Brooke, let's ask you a tough question. Can you do this workout faster than Dave? -This obstacle course?
-I could do any workout with his weight, faster. Damn.
[laughing] After the Games, I'm going to hold you to that. -Charity event?
-Charity event! And you stole a photo as she walked away? -He got a splinter.
-I got a splinter, Sevan. Look how big Travis is. Doesn't he look like he put on–
-I did. I put on ten pounds since last year, actually. I met Travis in 2010. He was smaller than me! And I was 145 pounds. He was just a fast-ass kid with a crazy engine. I remember he walked up to me and he was like, "You train with that Rich guy, right?" I was like, "Yeah." He was like, "I think I could beat him." I was like, "Oh shit." Next thing you know, two years later at the Games. Crushed it, man. And where's Rich now? Being a dad. -Do you remember that conversation?
-No. I don't. He probably doesn't. He didn't even know me! I told him about the story after the 2014 Regionals... Almost qualified for the Games, man. -I was so close.
-Except I beat him. So he got upset about it. You beat me. I was pissed. I was
like, "Fuck that Travis kid." He did. We actually did have a talk about that a couple years later. He hoped I did bad, that year. In the sport. Not like bad like hurt himself, but I was like, "I hope he gets time capped. I'll beat him." Or if two more people beat him, I win. I go to the Games. So I was hoping he didn't finish the event. I was
just sitting there -Like just fail. He wanted me to fail.
-And now you guys are bros. -We are!
-Yeah. -We've been bros even when he wanted me to fail.
-We're still tight. -It was a friendly fail.
-It was. -Go to your back.
-My back? Just keep them on the field for the hour. Don't segregate your force. Don't break your force up. Keep it all contained. And then when it's time to go, they're going to go. That's when we're going to do with the men. The men are going to come out, stay out here and suck it up. -Okay.
-You know what I mean? And the women will do the same. You're going to step on the course. You gotta earn the respect of the course. -How are you. Ricky Stenhouse Jr.
-I'm Danica. NASCAR Second time that I've looked at your face and I'm like, "Oh yeah." I thought I was just kind of like a friendly face. I don't want to be covered in sand. Did any of the bikes break? Or crash and break? Watch the middle screen. -Oh. Who was that?
-I think Chelsey Hughes Oh no! Laid on the back. There was some people who tried to drive across the sand for a while. -They would go as far as they could and then–
-Sand. Riding it all the way across. -But I ride dirt bikes a lot through sand.
-You gotta carry speed. Fast, yeah. Fast and put your weight on the back. Hi, how are you? Colby, good to meet you. -He does the WWE.
-Yeah. Pro wrestler. The individuals do it this way, the
teams will go back and forth. Demo, Dave! It's early in the week, I don't want to ruin myself. -Imagine how nervous you are compared to the athletes.
-I'm not nervous at all cause my job does not require me to do this perfect. Gotta go under the net, climb the ladder, touch the top. You gotta try at least once without touching it! Ready...Go! Dave, who do you think's going to win? It'd be dumb not to say Ricky. Nice, Danica. Stay with it, girl! So much easier when you watch. -Someone did it in 1:08 yesterday.
-What? Boz did it in like 1:19. I really thought those ropes would have been
a lot easier, in the middle. Yeah, that's really hard. -That is harder than it looks.
-That was the best part. I think Danica did better than some of the female athletes, right? Yeah, probably. Actually, I don't know. She did good.
[laughing] I can tell you that my main focus was not falling off of one of those walls. How'd the cargo net feel? -I felt really good on the cargo net.
-Yeah, he was moving. I was not a monkey, but I was steady yeti. -That. See I didn't know any of that.
-I figured that out when I first grabbed it. -Oh this is pretty solid.
-That got me hot. That roll over. We are going to kill some people. -No flips over the net.
-Do you agree with that? Yeah, I mean I don't personally flip over it. I never have. You know, the more I think about it, I think they told us we couldn't when we went through BUD/S. because it was so high. It was 40 feet. Because I'd never done that–I'd never seen that. When people first started doing that I'm like, "Wjhy wasn't I familiar with that?" It's cause at ours it's 40 feet up in the air. -It's not going to slow anyone down.
-The course is a lot longer, too. -They're going to be fine.
-If you do a traditional way, you just can't get down as fast.
-I mean, it's definitely faster, right? If the playing field is level and none of the age groups can, it's fine. That's that. You can still do the traditional way and
finish in under two minutes. -Who burned in yesterday? I saw Holte burn in.
-Eramo. -Kristi Eramo.
-Was Eramo on your Instagram? What's her name? I bet you she's hurt. What's her name came down and landed on her arm and got up and was holding it. Tunnicliffe. And walked around and I was like, "Hey,
do you need to see medical?" and she's like, "Oh, no. Maybe some ice?" There's going to
be carnage then. Bike course is going create
more injuries than the O-Course. -Is that really all of the shoes you have?
-Yeah. I took 70 pairs once to the Games in Carson. -I remember. Your mirror is really Game of Thrones-esque.
Did you ask for that? I said I want something that Xerxes would look into to check her hair. -"Xerxes?"
-Isn't that the girl? -Cersei.
-Cersei...Xerxes... Let's go fuck some people up. Hi. Are you just being an asshole? No! We got stuff to talk about. You're fine,
you can get in. Get in. The stuff I put up with in this job... -You know she's the only broadcast member here?
-oh god. -Aren't you glad you got in this car, Kiki? So glad! This is what dreams are made of. So teams are still climbing, they get to the top, they just can't forward roll over the top, and they only get one time through on the practice. Stay on the far end. Done. -What time is your first Team brief?
-First Team brief is at 10 a.m. -What time is the Individual brief?
-8 a.m. 8? The bicycle brief? 8 or 9? So 1 through 5, skip five, and then it'll be 11 through whatever is the rest. And then it'll be 6 through 10 and whatever's left of that. So it pays–it pays big time
to be in the top 10 because you will be pole-front position
for both of the heats? -Yeah.
-Copy. -The vests are missing?
-They're on their way. What's going on over here? -It's a brief.
-No with you five? This looks suspicious. Well we're going to breakfast. I think in this brief I want you guys to hold
the handstand position– freestanding handstand position for
the brief. For the entire time. -Got it.
-Got it. -Yes sir.
-Easy day. We got a ball. We got a hoop. Knockout tournament. -Where's it set up?
-Back by our trailer. -Knockout tournament.
-When? -I'm the worst, but I'm down.
-I'm in. -I'm gonna break an ankle. I'm warming up! Watch this one. What? You want me to go further back? They don't call me Steph Curry for no reason! -Did anybody talk to them about the coaches?
-No. We did not. When the course is closed, we will bring them into the inner loop where the spectator area is, too. But only during the closed course. -What's your history with bike riding?
-I rode bikes a lot. I mean, I actually don't ride my bike a ton in Davis just cause I have an electric skateboard, but when I lived in the Bay Area I used to ride the bike everywhere. I'd put like ten miles on a day. Pretty comfortable on it. This is a little different. I've done a lot of mountain biking, too. But this is on grass. It's like a road bike on grass. I don't know, we'll see how it is? -Do you have any concerns that the bikes
are going to be too big? -No. That's why the seat goes up and down.
-That's a good point I think some people are pretty nervous about it. I heard one person who just learned to ride a bike six weeks ago. I won't name names. -Is it a man or a woman?
-It's a woman. I think the race will be kind of a melee. I mean, 20 people on a course like that? It's not a lot of space. -No, I don't think it's even 20 bikes wide. Oh definitely not. 12 feet wide at most. -He tole me that he heard of a woman who just learned how to ride a bike six weeks ago. -Do you know who that is?
-I don't. That's not a long time, though. To learn–like as a kid, never learn? This is the first time she's gotten on a bike? That'll be interesting. -What's the mood of the athletes so far? -It seems pretty light and fun.I don't know. Today's not the official start of the Games. It's a kind of a way to get the jitters out–to get out there and do something, but everybody's still pretty low-key today. Nothing crazy yet. -What's this?
-That is my little reminder for the Games this year: I want to be like a hungry little lion warrior. A little slogan that my girlfriend wrote says,
"Happy but hungry." -Who's your coach this year?
-Max El-Hag ofTraining Think Tank. He coaches me and Travis Mayer. -Oh okay. That's good company. Yeah. He's a good guy. He's very, very, very, very smart. He's also pretty sensitive guy in tune with emotions and mental side of things. It's been awesome. I've been with him
most of this whole year. All right so from here we will keep you guys in your heats. You will go and get fitted for your helmets and then go meet up with JMac and he'll explain the bikes more and get you sized up for the bikes. -You guys ready for a bike ride?
-Yeah, yeah. Let's do it. Can I see a small-medium? -Does the man bun interfere with helmet sizes?
-Uh, no. Thank you, sir. -Damn. Let me see.
-Just like that, bro. [wolf whistle] How big is your head, Sevan? -I'm a medium. I think you're a large head. I have a lot of brains in there, that's for sure. I think I need a large. -Wear it flat, like that.
-It's all right. -Is that all it is, really?
-With the discount it's like 1 $1200 bike. -But seriously, you get to keep the helmet
-Bro! Man! Helmets are expensive! I almost paid that much for the bike I use to train on! No drop seats? What kind of bike is this? I'm going to ride a wheelie the entire time,
just so you guys know. -Not yet?
-Not yet, someone's going to talk to them first. But this is Josh Bridges. [Josh stares in confusion] The course is pretty tight, there's a lot of people in there. If they're going slow and they're in the way then move or be put on the ground, I guess. -Do you have bike riding skills?
-Maybe. I rode a mountain bike until I got a driver's license, pretty much I guess. -Do you think there's going to be some incidental contact out there? Oh most definitely. Definitely going to be that–the incidental contact. Hopefully I'm not involved with it! But there's going to be, for sure. -Where will you be? Up in front of it all?
-I'm hoping! I'm hoping I can do well today and I set myself up for success tomorrow. All right guys, can everybody hear me? First off: The intent is that the first heat will be given the bike that is sized to their height and the mechanics will adjust your seat. You will then do one lap, 400 meters. There is two barriers on that lap. There is
the logs and the boards. You can practice those as you come back to here. Your Trek bikes are provided for you. It is a mountain bike. 29 inch tires shall be the smaller sizes with the 27.5 inch tires. Common problems: You get flat, you can throw a chain... Marked on the course with a blue cone
are the two Trek techs. Most commonly it can be fixed itself. Lift the back tire and crank the pedals. If we have a mechanical issue in the time trial, is it the same rules and you're just out of luck? -Yes.
-Okay. These bikes have all been tested
on the course multiple times. They have been run through the
mechanics multiple times. If you do have a problem, it more than likely is because of what you've done over one of the barriers or how you've ridden the bike–trying to shift, smashing the pedals, and breaking a chain or something. -I've got 72 centimeters. You're good to go.
-Okay. If you want to head out on the practice loop and take it for a quick loop? Remember to buckle your helmet and you're good to go. -Are they selling those in the Reebok store?
The half shirts? Yeah. You know this is
the Games Crop Top. You can get it anywhere, really. -Just keeping it real.
-Keeping it real, bro. -Why are you wearing a black shirt? Well, I think it is believed that black
doesn't show up as much. It's camouflage or something. But in that case, why don't we just wear camo? -I do really like the shirt, though. You the man. We will fit you to a bike based on your seize and heights that we already have. There's only one adjustment that will be available for you on the bike, which will be the seat height. You'll go up on the orange course, do one small, 400 meter loop practice lap. If you hit something or drop the bike from carrying to the ground, it will derail the chain off. The front shock has a lock out. Blue knob, here. What that does is goes from an absorbent
shock to a fixed shock. I would recommend that you leave the shock on. It's a little bit of a rough course. -Nice to meet you.
-All right, we'll have you stand next to the bike. We want the ball of your hip close to the saddle. -Lower, maybe?
-I don't think so. I usually end up putting it up
higher and higher. -Let's start with that.
-Just step on? Cycle backwards. And then if you want to put your legs at 12 and 6, you'll pedal straight up and down. Like that. And push your heel down for me. Okay, we'll go up a little higher. You were right! -Oh my god, a new seat for you? Annie's just all legs? Is that what you're saying? Yeah, some of the guys were a little bit too short for their bikes so we had to get them a smaller seat post. I'll try it like this. -Shouldn't this here be on 3?
-Yeah, you got three options here in the front... When you're pedaling around you can figure out which one feels best to you. 3 is the higher one, so it'll be a harder gear. You'll go a little bit faster, but takes a harder push. What do you think people are going
to have the left one on? I think probably be on 3 for most of it and do most of your shifting over here. -So I'm going to keep this one on the same one.
-Most of the time. That's what I'm going to do. I'm not even going to try to change here. I'm just going to change on this side. -What would you say I should be in? 3 or 2?
-2 or 3. It's dependent. You find a good cadence–whatever feels good to you. You don't want to be pushing something too hard where you can't turn it fast, but you don't want it to be too easy. You'll find the right gear. You'll go out and you'll feel it. It's pretty noticable when you get there. You can try it a little higher if you want to take a lap. -Go over there. Let us know if you have any questions.
-Okay. Thank you! -How you doing, Smiley? I'm good now. A little bit nervous. I'm just a little bit awkward! I had a trip to Hawaii in September for Ultimate Hawaiian Trail Run last year, and something just clicked and I realized that I just wasn't doing what was making me happy in a lot of different areas and it really forced me to... -Like literally on the run? Not literally on the run, but the whole
trip and the whole atmosphere. I was so happy and so engrossed in this opportunity. And then everything changed! I just made changes. If it didn't feel right I just got rid of it and replaced it with something that did feel right. You end up rubbing a lot of people the wrong way and I don't intentionally ever mean to hurt anyone, but I feel the happiest that I've ever felt and I'm still trying to win the Games, obviously, but I'm a lot more grateful for just the normal stuff. Just kind of being true to myself, which sounds real lame but it was this big life switch. I've literally changed everything. Sold my houses, had a breakup, left my gym.
Just everything. One of those–I was too proud. I love nutrition and I love learning about it, so I've always been like, "No. I can do it by myself." I went, "You know what? I'm going to ask for help and I'm going to get somebody to do that for me." Somebody that knows better. I took a massive gamble and started that change during the Open, so the Open and Regionals was very rocky for me. -Did you just go into it blind and just trust her with faith? Or are you just firing thousands of questions off at her? I ask her questions for the hunger–like in that thirst for knowledge, cause I'm really excited by it. But I said to her, "I 100% trust you. Otherwise I wouldn't have come to you and asked for help." Don't ask someone for help if you're not going to take it. So I trusted her entirely and I communicated with her and if I ever had a problem we worked through these things together. She got to know my body and now–more than anything– like I said, I'm leaner and that's cool, but there's so many other things that I didn't expect to change because of it. Like your mental clarity. That's huge! You change your diet and that's the first thing. You go a little crazy at the start while you're adjusting and then it just settles and it's the best thing. I'm kicking myself that I didn't do it
sooner, but I think everything happens at the right time, for the right reasons. I'm super grateful. This is the first time I've come into the Games in years not injured. My body feels good. My head feels good. I'm more relaxed. I'm not getting sick in the stomach about everything and just willing to go hard but not with as much fear. And that in itself is just–that's enough for me. -The watch and the earrings. Tell me about those. I bought these. I stayed with Dan Bailey in Columbus, leading up to the Games and these were in a little store where they hand make them down the road in Columbus when I was trying get out of his hair for a minute. -Uh oh. We'll talk about the watch later. This is new. My mom sent it form Australia!
[laughing] Okay Mike, let's get you to the position...
That was awkward. You got me nervous. I got my–my words all jumbled. There's a sensitivity behind these glasses. -How many minutes?
-7 minutes. Seven minutes before the first heat starts. In about 3 or 4 minutes, we'll line you up. Heat 1, let's get ready! Lane 1: Annie, Lane 2: Sam, Lane 3: Camille, Lane 4: Katrin, Lane 5: Carol-Ann. You go around, you ride your third lap and you finish your third and final lap where? Over the red. -Don't wear cheating compression. -Johnny, they're not allowed to wear the bike shorts. Padded bike shorts? -I think I'm fine with it.
-We shouldn't allow that for tomorrow. -Yeah, not allowed.
-I'll let them know. Brooke Wells is definitely wearing it. -And why shouldn't it be allowed? It's a slippery slope. They have a uniform that they're supposed to wear all weekend and we let them wear something like that here. What about on the Run-Swim-Run? They want to wear neoprene. What about...?
It's just a slippery slope. Consistency is the key. -Well you're the boss, yo. Wells! Fuhrer coming in! Sturt! -Is it heavy?
-No, just the tactics of how to pick it up. -Do they tell you how to do it? -They don't tell you where to put your hands?
None of that? -How do you feel about this? Do you do a lot of bike riding, back home? As a kid. But then I moved to Abu Dhabi and now not so much. -Does anyone bike ride there? Yeah, there's a few biking treks. -Is there a bike lane? Do you see bike lanes? No. People do it at their own risk. -So when this was announced, did you immediately go out and buy a bike and just start? No. I did a few–we went biking in Wales, but I biked enough as a kid. You don't forget how to ride a bike. So hopefully it comes back. -Did you do any training with bike carrying or getting on and off the bike? No. No. It's just like a barbell. Like a clean. Let's hope. -It doesn't sound like a lot of people
practiced very much. No. I think everyone's theory is it's one event. There's other things to practice, as well. Do a bit of practice so you can get through it and then... Yeah. Survive it. I used to do a lot of road biking
for training for the Olympics. -Formal training on the bike? Not really. -Like, "This is how you take a turn?
This is how you stop?" No.Just kind of made it up.
[laughing] -Why did you choose Individual over Team this year? We didn't have a team at Yas this year, but it was always the plan–do a couple years Team and then give Individual a go. -Is any part of you wishing that you had done it the other way around? Started as Individual? No. Definitely got the experience with Team. It was an awesome team that we had and awesome people, so it was a good time while it lasted but now everyone's gone their separate ways. It's really cool meeting all the Individuals as well. -And what is your athletic background? I did gymnastics growing up. Ten years. Then I played rugby for a good twelve to fifteen years. -It seems like that's the place where CrossFitters come from, huh? The gymnastics? Yeah. It seems to help a lot, yeah. It's very different, but it does help with the–you don't have to learn gymnastics again. I blew it in the beginning.
I came out a little too hot. But I think I have to and I just have to deal
with whatever is to come. -Did you get passed somewhere? Yeah. Emily Abbott passed me on a really windy part. Which I know exactly what I did. There's a series of bumps that I forgot about and I should have taken it a little wider. I don't know. Twenty other athletes, though. It'll be a bit more challenging. -What's up with your earrings? I don't know. What's up with my earrings? They're round loops. I got them at a boutique in Omaha. -Have you seen Kara Webb's earrings? No. Why? What's up? -They're just a larger version. I'll have to tell her.
-You guys have similar taste. I'll have to tell her you said that, Sevan. Thank you. -What Games is this for you? This is number 8. Should have been 9, damnit! But I couldn't handstand walk in 2014. -How would you rate this Stacie against the other 8 of them in a competition? 9 of them? She's no different. She's just several years older. Maybe a bit more wiser. I'm the same. Feeling the exact same. What kind of questions do you have for me? -I was going to let her ask the questions. I just asked how it went. -Why didn't it go good? What didn't you like about it? Your time or you came off the bike or...? I just couldn't really figure out how to get over the logs so I have to get off the bike, go over the log, and then get back on the bike. It's very time-consuming. -Is it unnerving to start with two unknown events, or is it kind of cool to just get these out of the way? It's cool. You don't like–I mean I don't really like think about my other competitors, but if you were to, like you don't really know how anyone is at all this stuff cause we don't like do it in Regionals or like–you don't really show
how you're good at this stuff. So it's really cool to like use your fitness. But it's very difficult to like try to learn on the fly how to do it. -What did you remember to bring to the Games this year that you forgot to bring last year? I feel like I come pretty prepared every year. I came with my bike shorts this year. Little cushioning on the tush and Dave called me out and said we aren't allowed to use it. Whatever. -On social media I see you and the champ doing a lot of training together. I went to Boston for a week. I went to
Cape Cod for two weeks. It's been an awesome opportunity to train with Katrin and just see how her day-in and day-out is and really good to push each other. -And when you're with her, are you guys doing the same workouts? Are you doing the same programming? Yeah, we do the same programming. Sometimes it'll be like we might have weakness work and we're doing different stuff but I mean for the most part we do pretty much everything the same. Just need to work on being well rounded. We can pretty much do all the same stuff for that. We just have so much fun. I mean, we have fun together, we have fun training, outside the gym. It's important. -Like you guys seem like you'd get in a car accident and be laughing. Okay, that's not the case.
[laughing] But I mean we probably would laugh about it later. I flipped over the front of the handlebars in practice. I was like, "Stuff that. I'm just going to
carry it and just walk it." "Do you want to do that again?" and I was like, "I'd rather not fall again." No more than three fails! No more than three! Jerk. It's okay, I got you three other times. I literally fell four times, in practice. I didn't laugh the second! -You didn't lift up your front tire or what happened? I did! One time they said I lifted up too soon, so it came back down when I went over. -Oh, you got a little blood! Got one right here, right here, my hands... Yeah, they were like, "Your leg's bleeding." I'm like, "I know!" and they're like, "No, that leg!" I'm like, "Oh. I'm bleeding everywhere." And my elbow? And my elbow. Four spots. -Speed wobbles!
-I fell off the first time going over my handlebars. Yes! Me too! I hope someone got on camera the first time I fell off the log. Literally forward rolled off the logs. I just couldn't make the corners! -Alethea, that Instagram photo of you jumping in front of the CrossFit sign. It's a pretty good one, eh?
[laughing] Jumping photo's like a tradition. -And who shot it? -My sister.
-Wow! -And just with an iPhone?
-Sorry, a Samsung. -Don't judge me!
-Too late. Already judged. So a stag jump. I didn't know I had that flexibility, still. But mind you, my groin was a bit sore afterwards. -Was it?
-Yeah! -You're like, "Oh, that was dangerous." It's a wee bit of a big stretch. You know what's more impressive?
She did it with one-and-a-half Achilles. I don't know what they used to bind it up together, but it's some part of my body. -Some extension cord at the hospital?
-Pretty much. -So it's not your part?
-No, it's mine! -Okay.
-Yeah. It's all my stuff. The scar's pretty clean, too. It's on the side so you can't really see it from the back. -Damn. -How was the test lap? Bumpy. I've never really ridden off–not too many mountains in Virginia, so... -How was it transferring on and off the bike? That was fine. I mean, getting on and off the bike–everybody's done that. That's fine. You just have to hop off and hop over a couple obstacles. Wasn't bad. -Travis had his on 1.
-What? -This.
-Oh. I'm going to leave it there. -This is there I had mine: 3 and 5. Oh I didn't even see that. -You think he's just trying to get in your head and throw you off? Oh you know it. Some courses have like stairs and stuff. I've been watching some videos. When you guys do your first lap, you'll come through here in this section. You'll do your second lap and you'll come through here again, and on your third and final lap, where do you come through? [silently pointing] -You guys should be on the course! Just maneuvering was hard. Just gotta get that down. Three laps is a different race. -I just got left behind.
-Where did you pass Ben at? -You were in 5th and then you came in 4th. I passed him pretty early. I mean, he passed me on something and then I passed him right back. -That was a good little race.
-Yeah man. -The first thing Ben said when he got off the bike:
"Three laps is going to be a totally different race." Yeah. It's going to hurt. I hit my balls on the frame. That hurt. -Koski, what happened to your balls? Just bouncing around on the seat? I locked my suspension. So it was pretty bouncy. -But better transfer of energy? I guess. I don't know. -Did everyone lock it? I don't know. I don't know, honestly, if it's smart or not. I did. Planning to do it tomorrow as well. -Are you going to tell this second heat what the
fastest time is? Yeah. -Fraser killed it, huh?
-Well, in his heat. But I don't know how everyone else did,
you know what I mean? He killed his heat because they were the first five to go. -Are you surprised to see Mat so far ahead?
-Yeah. Classic. Ricky Garard had the fastest. 6 flat. Mat Fraser - 6:14. -That's going to look good in the lens, right there.
-Let me take that and show John. -Yeah. Show John.
-What was course time? -5:45?
-And what was our best? -6 minutes flat. -How did it feel? Like a stroll in the park. -Do you love it?
-I do. It'll be fun. A lot about line selection is what is going to take place. -Like riding on the beach.
-Exactly. Start on the outside-you know where to end up. I think regardless, whether are good or not it's just going to be a fun event. -I don't think it matters what you say cause this fan is so strong that I can't hear. I like the course. I like the obstacles. I used to–I've been growing up riding bikes and dirt bikes and stuff like that, so... It's fun. It's bumpy, but it's nice. -Are you going to lock out your front shock? Probably. Yeah, I think I might. I don't know if I'm a fan of the front shock or not. -You're not a fan?
-I don't know if I am, yeah. -Smoother ride but less transfer of energy?
-Yeah. Very true. But I mean it's a smoother ride because
it is pretty bumpy. But no, it's a fun track. It's perfect. Three rounds is going to be a-- -A doozy.
-Yeah. You're going to be in trouble if you go out too hot. This trial run and the actual event are going to be two completely different things. No matter what, in three rounds you'll be able to catch people. -Oh yeah, no matter where you start. Not really sure how fast it took the other guys, but I'm thinking right around 6, 6-and-a-half minutes? It's probably where you'll see a lot of us. -Where did you place in your Regional?
-Fourth. -Is that weird that there's three spots on the podium?
-And they just put me off to the side? Yeah. -Is that weird?
-Yeah, I'm just like a pity standing there. No, it's cool, man. All that matters is getting back here. I mean, no matter what, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th... I mean we all want to go into it winning, of course but I mean it doesn't affect anything. The goal going in is to get to Carson or Madison, now. And then just show up and perform when
you get here, you know? The Games usually favors me more because it's more different odd objects, so I kind of have a–I feel like a little more of an advantage when it comes to this stuff than sometimes just straight, typical CrossFit. I'm kind of looking forward to it. -How do you know Travis Mayer? He's from the Dirty South–the Southeast region, so we've known each other for a bunch of years when I was the director there.
-And he's a pretty positive, upbeat guy? Dude, he's a super positive guy. I really fear sometimes that he gets so excited he might pee on himself. [think about that for a moment] You're welcome. You came out hard, huh? [panting]
Uh, it was hard. -Do you know his time, by any chance? -6:51.
-Nice. -You need to sign up here.
-All right. Thank you. Can't believe that guy who demo'd it did it in
5:20 or whatever. -5:45, I think.
-That's still fast. -He was also 5'9" and 103 pounds, that guy. -Are you serious? 103 pounds?
-I mean, I'm making it up. I don't know. I was going to say he needs to eat a sandwich. -My cock is thicker than his upper body. -I'll have to take your word on that one.
-Speaking just between us! There's a lot more than that between us, Sevan. -6:56.
-Thank you. -How are you feeling? Okay? Any issues with the bike? You need to see medical for anything? -Wow, is that a standard question or did you ask that because he looks messed up? Because I'm breathing so heavy! -Wow. Hold on, I want to say something to you.
-Say it. -You do not look like you need medical. This guy's trying to get in your head. -I thought I look pretty good, what do you think?
-You look amazing! -How did you do? What is the time?
-Uh 6:25. -Nice!
-6:26? Somethere right around there. -Fastest time I've heard so far was 6 by Ricky Garard.
-Oh, that's good. -And 6:15 by Fraser with a 2nd place. Well how about that. -What surprised you about the course? Just the small inclines. I didn't think they were going to be as bad as they were and I probably started out a little too hot, but I mean it's going to be a totally different pace
going tomorrow. Cause there's no way you're going to sustain that. -Do you feel three times the pressure this year that you felt last year? No, not at all. -But you have three times the number of followers. Yep, well I appreciate all those followers but I don't put the pressure on myself, no. -I want you to know something. I don't believe you. -Any issues with the obstacle course? Mmm, there's a few things that get you. It's a lot bigger than I thought. I don't know. It's one of those ones that you sort of got to calculate how to do it. And not get too excited. But no, no surpries.. It's like playing on the jungle gym -That opening ascent up the log and then you transfer to the rope. A lot of people are having trouble figuring that out. What's going on there? Yeah, that's different. That's on you sort of don't want to go too fast. It's one of those ones where you just take two seconds extra, you're going to get five seconds ahead. The obstacle course is fun. I like that. I mean, it's going to be difficult for everyone, of course. But it's really fun. That's what's cool about this year. Like it's super cool that we get to do the obstacle course and it's so fun that we get to bike, even if I'm not like best at it, it's a fun
opportunity to do it. -What's the make-or-break obstacle? First two. The cargo net and the rope swing, without a doubt, are the most technical. And by nature of being at the start line, being the first two obstacles, those are the ones that everyone is going to be jittery. They're going to jump right up right away and try to be rushed and I think when you're rushed on those technical movements, that's when mistakes are made. Their first time could stand as the fastest time of the whole day. But they don't win the event because it's got to be consistent execution across three trials. -Cargo net jsut looks like it's a ladder, just go up it. Yeah, but if people don't climb properly, you push into the net and you work a lot harder than you need to. So the cargo net is not—I don't think—meant to be climbed fast. You need to climb it smooth so if people are rushed off the "3...2...1...Go!" it's a race. Everyone wants to go fast. But if you're thinking faster than you're placing your hands, you're just going to miss. You're going to put a foot through the net. You're going to make mistakes. If you're just slow and smooth and you make a good move over the top and drop and then you can take a second, you
can hit the swing and just control is going to be the name of the game. Past that obstacle, monkey bars on, it's just go time. Go as fast as you can. But mistakes will be made on the first two obstacles. That will make-or-break the event. This is not the event brief. This is just the event overview of what's happening. We are bringing back the Big Bob. But now it's slimmer, so now it's the Skinny Bob. -Hay bales!
-Oh my gosh. The weights are not accurate!
The weights are not accurate! [Now go watch Part 2. You know you want to]
