so [Music] welcome back to the channel everyone uh got skid loader loaded up we got transfer some hay to another farm again and uh see what other kind of trouble we get into just got back uh from bringing that that load of hay to the other farm skid loader on the trailer still um beautiful day beautiful spring afternoon and uh i'm just gonna explain this video is gonna jump around but i'm gonna explain who we are as eab farms how we got started everybody's always asking advice for beginning farmers and how you got how you got started and how to get started so i'll just jump right into it i'll uh start from the beginning here eab farms we started uh by making hay for the horse industry and that's a great way to get your feet in agriculture industries start making hay uh i guess my biggest advice for somebody starting small square bales um you can make a killing and the equipment's cheap um then we went from making hay to uh grown corn to get in the row crops and just because i've always had a love for row crops and i wanted to do it and we got a herd of beef cows now and our background and some feeders i guess my biggest advice for new farmers or young farmers or anyone that's wanting to start out don't go buy a farm right away that might be stupid and it goes against what a lot of people say you got you've got to buy a farm it is much cheaper to rent land and build capital that way and work your way up towards buying your own farm you can rent farms where you can store equipment and sheds and uh it just works out better get some long-term leases then you're not so buried in debt right away um get your equipment figured out first and then i'd recommend um i guess just my opinion is don't spend cash um get an operating loan right away use your cash for the emergency stuff that comes up there's always always something that you weren't expecting um as far as farming and it's nice to be able to pay that out of pocket like your seed your fertilizer your inputs i would recommend borrowing the money for that be smart with that but don't be afraid of debt i guess all these guys are that's bad debts bad debts bad debt is good if you have it under control and another thing is is when you're buying equipment don't get colorblind um buy what you can afford by what makes sense by what works good in your operation we got red tractors we got blue tractors we got green tractors same with the equipment we got all different kinds um now as far as making hay if you're buying newer equipment um it's hard to beat grain our baler and our disc binds have always been green and uh that kind of stuff spend more money on that you can always use older tractors to pull it but you don't want to be fighting bail or breakdowns we made the mistake where i made the mistake when i started farming i cheap a note on the baler and uh it always costs you more and and you got hey that's ready to be failed and you're fighting baylor issues and uh it's just it costs you more in the end by a good baler same goes for row crops planter yeah you can get cheap planters but make sure it's make sure it's a good one um starting out i'd go with like a john deere seven thousand find them for five six thousand bucks in in good good shape and they'll plant a heck of a stand of corn uh you're cheaping out on like a planter like that you're gonna sacrifice the rest of the year even when you go to combine it it's not gonna be as good a crop um so yeah spend spend money on the equipment that you have to the tractors you can sacrifice with a little bit less comfort i don't know why these guys are pushing have off-farm jobs i mean yeah it's good to start with but a lot of these people that are starting farming are having the mindset of that's always how it's going to be well i wouldn't necessarily want to farm on the side you know what i mean you're doing all the work why not make it your full-time income or your full-time job there's plenty of ways to do that in agriculture industry a good way to do it as stupid as it sounds i mean you're buying equipment to farm on your own do a little bit of custom work we are a first generation farm as always stated um we're not necessarily first generation farmers me and my wife both have family that farms a little bit but eab farms as a farm is a first generation farm the farm you're seeing on youtube is what we created um both me and my wife are full-time on the farm and i wouldn't have it any other way we are living the absolute life that we've ever dreamed about this farm eab farms what you're seeing on here was never part of the family um this was originally a dairy farm and uh the guy retired late 90s i believe he's actually an awesome neighbor that lives just down the road and we had some family friends that are big row crop farmers in the area they've they bought this place and we purchased it from them so what you're seeing in this in this youtube channel wasn't wasn't handed down to us it was bought paid for by me and my wife as eab farms and uh there's all there's a lot of uh people giving advice to young farmers but i just i gotta chuckle at it because it's kind of funny all the people giving advice or most the people i should correct myself most of people giving advice are ones that are working on a third or fourth fifth generation farm and yeah not all of them were handed it to them but even if it was bought um it's a lot easier buying in the family there's no competition and you kind of got a deal worked out so another thing that i gotta wrap up was saying um you guys have been seeing a lot of our our beef cattle um the cow side of things just because we started in the winter this youtube channel that by no means is our main source of income or whatever it's just what you guys have been seeing we will start showing more once we get in the fields and stuff but i don't want to say don't start it but for what we found out is cattle is not or wouldn't be a good way to start in farming i guess it's a good bonus to an operation but we couldn't be where we are if it was just for the cattle um but not even close so next year will be 10 years of me farming on my own and i wouldn't trade it for anything if you guys have any want or desire to farm um try it because it's not worth living life on the what if i would have or what would have happened if i did it um yes there's chances of failure but you can fail anything in life and i guess for me i would never want to live my life saying what if i did this so we did it i'm sure uh this video made no sense and bounced around quite a bit so if you guys have any questions um let me know you can get a hold of me on facebook or comment sections on here on youtube um i'm willing to help out or answer any questions any new guys or anyone that's got questions on how to get started farming there's more waste more than one way to do it but like i said just here to help we are blessed with this amazing life and uh if i can help anyone else get into it i will um as always thanks for watching please like comment subscribe follow along for more we will talk at you later
