a beauty youtuber exposed one of more fees best-selling products and Jacqueline Hill is speaking out before I get into the story I just want to put out a disclaimer please do not send any hate to Jen less reviews more fee Jaclyn hill or anyone else involved in this story this video is simply meant to report on the news and give some insight on the situation On February 27th youtuber Jen loves reviews posted a video titled why I need to take down my Jaclyn hill morphe reviews in the video Jen said that her sister-in-law Amy told Jen that she recently purchased the original jaclyn hill morphe palette from Ulta and it wasn't as good as Jen said it was when Jen swatched the shades she said she noticed a difference she borrowed Amy's palette to compare with her palette from the original launch in 2017 Jen sent Murphy an email explaining the situation and asking if there is a formula change morphe responded we are sorry to hear that at this time we have confirmed the palette sold at both online and Ulta is exactly the same no updates on the pigmentation we may think you may have received a defective one are you able to provide us with the photos of the swatches for us to forward these to or relevant team for further review Jen sent the morphe representative swatches of a few shades from both the palette from the original launch and the palette purchase recently the swatches on the left are from the recent palette Jen also sent a photo of the two palettes side by side the palette on the left is the original launch the swatches do show some differences in tone and pigmentation Jen also asked the representative if the new palette was authentic based on the palettes patch code a different more senior morphe representative replied we can confirm any more few products purchased at Ulta is authentic as they are one of our authorized third-party retailers the formula has not changed and should provide the same pigmentation Jen then purchased a new version of the original palette and did swatches comparing the palette from the original launch Amy's palette and Jen's new palette the swatches do show differences in tone and pigmentation between the original launch palette and the recently purchased palettes Jen confirmed the formulas were different when she compared the ingredient list she had the original launch to the four separate ingredient lists from the current version she also showed a chart she made that showed what order the ingredients appeared in on all the different lists for context the ingredient order is important because the ingredients are listed in order of concentration the more of an ingredient is used in the product the higher it is on the list one important difference between the two versions of the palette is that two of the formulas from the new version contain carmine a pigment that is made from crushed bugs this means the new version of the palette is not vegan after going through all the eyeshadow formulas currently available in morphe eye shadow palettes Jen confirmed the original launch formula is no longer available to purchase Jen pointed out that in Jacqueline's launch video for her new palette Jacqueline said the formula for her palettes was hers and no one else could use it this is the same loved formula as the Jaclyn hill original palette and people ask me about that all the time because they're like wait what do you mean like it's a different formula because morphe has their standard formulas and I created my own formula there's actually been other people who have collaborate with morphe who've asked if they could just use my formula and there's like sorry that's Jacqueline's only like I signed papers it's my formula that I worked very hard on a couple of years back to develop Jen said Jacqueline was telling the truth Jacqueline is telling the truth here there is no formula anywhere on Murphy's websites that is exactly like hers is possible that Jacqueline didn't know that they changed her formula from the 2017 version to now I don't know what Jacqueline knows and what she doesn't know somebody made that choice somebody made that decision somebody at morphe knows however Jen said the formulas in the two palettes were not exactly the same Jen then showed another chart comparing the current original palette formulas to the formulas from the palette Jacqueline just released with more feet while the formulas are similar they are not identical three key ingredients that are common in all of Jacqueline's formulas are jojoba oil coconut oil and shea butter the fourth formula in the new version of Jacqueline's original palette is very similar to several of Murphy's other palettes including one of Jeffery stars artistry palette formulas except for the jojoba oil coconut oil and shea butter Jen said the fourth formula is also similar to the Jacqueline Hill vault formula which many people in the beauty community didn't like Jen concluded that aside from pigments the only major difference was those three ingredients this proprietary formula that Jaclyn won't let anybody use is exactly the same as other morphe formulas until you get about two ingredients 16 and then there's three ingredients that are unique to her formula how much do those three ingredients impact the formula overall we don't know but for me I feel like the base of the formula the first 10 ingredients are going to give you the major substance of the formula because remember when we get to that 1% line they can list the ingredients in any order once they get lower than 1% of the entire product even though they're not the same they're very similar and I just want you to have that information many people were upset with this information one person had a similar experience I feel so validated by this video I got the original Jaclyn hill palette when I first launched then unfortunately one of my bags was lost been traveling and it contained my Jaclyn hill palette I decided to replace it and bought a new Jaclyn hill palette from Ulta this was in November 2019 everything was different about it I thought maybe I was just romanticizing it or that I got a defective one so I went back to Ulta they exchanged it out for me and it was the same thing I exchanged it in December 2019 the original Jaclyn hill palette are used at least three to four times a week this one I barely used because the pigmentation sucks and it just doesn't feel the same and the colors don't look the same also I find that my eyes get itchy with the new palette which I never had hei issues with the original palette several people wondered why customers purchase for more fee or Jaclyn I really don't know why people keep giving Jaclyn and morph each hand says they've shown their real colors multiple times and people are like oh maybe this time will be different to this point the fact that people are still buying makeup with Jaclyn hill written on it is incomprehensible to me some people said this was more fees fault you guys really confuse me at what point do you stop dragging Jaclyn hill and point the blame where it really lies more feed Jacqueline is literally just the face I'm starting to think Morpheus just trying to sabotage a career at this point to be honest even her own cosmetics line is part by morphine and it's always issues with formulation I think morphe lied to her like they lie to us cut corners and pennies go into their pocket but others said they were both to blame I mean we don't correct people who say yeah Jacquelyn you killed that palette and tell them no it's more feet dewy it goes both ways but I don't understand how they could do it without Jacqueline's knowledge since she signed paperwork and it's her formula and she single-handedly came up with it in the lab and blah blah blah lies morphe lies for Jacqueline hill just like she lies for morphe and a few people had theories about the situation on the alta app you can sort by new arrivals meaning the top starts with their newest products and goes down all the way to the first items they release with Ulta several months ago Jacqueline's palette was towards the bottom because it was from 2017 it also had thousands of reviews and a very high rating however a few days after the vault pallets were released on Ulta the listing for Jacqueline's original palette was removed and it was a new palette with no reviews as of today it only has about 50 reviews right around the vaults must have been the time they changed the formula because Ulta had to relist it on their site right wasn't there drama about there being a JH 2 printed on the back of her vol 1 palette so JH - meaning Jacqueline Hill formula 2 the formula it feels like they kept the better formula until it had enough of a reputation for being amazing and then switched to a cheaper formula I hope that's not the case but my gosh it's looking bad maybe she is keeping it for future palettes for her own brand Jacqueline Cosmetics leaving morphe to have to come up with the clothes version but not an exact version so they can keep the palette in their collection just the theory in a live stream from March 1st Jen shared some new information her followers sent on Twitter she showed a tweet that said I remember I still had the packaging for my palette that I bought about a year ago and noticed there's a sticker on it where the ingredients list is and this was underneath it attached to the tweet were pictures that appeared to show an ingredient list sticker on top of the original list printed on the Box Jen showed another tweet with a picture of a palette purchased in September 2018 this palette appears to have the ingredient sticker on the packaging this ingredient sticker is different for the original formula but is not the same as the current formula as well this formula has carmine therefore the palette has not been vegan since at least 2018 however beauty bloggers Adi doll said the palette may have been marketed as vegan until recently if you bought a more feet Jacqueline Hill volume 1 palette in 2018 or by December 15th 2019 and the box list contains carmine they promoted it as vegan all the way into December 2019 Jen also pointed out that in 2018 when morphe updated their packaging for Ulta Jacqueline said the formula wouldn't change morphe responded to the situation in a few different ways when a reddit user sent morphe an email asking to purchase the original 2017 version of the Jacqueline Hill palette morphe responded were so flattered you noticed giving morphe babes killer makeup that won't kill their wallet is always our goal sometimes that means looking at products in our lineup and seeing if we can make them even better we recently optimized the shades and some of our palettes for this very reason the ingredient changes may vary depending on the palette but the benefits are the same powerfully pigmented seriously creamy super blendable shades morphe babes are living for morphe also responded on their Twitter account they tweeted we have seen several concerns about our original morphe Jacqueline Hill palette formula modifications and ingredient changes and we want to set the record straight attached to the tweet was a statement we also wanted to be clear these formula improvements are out of our collaborators control Jacqueline was not made aware of the specific ingredient adjustments to her palette and was told only that we work to improve the performance and payoff while it is common in the beauty industry to make formula adjustments and improvements to keep up with industry standards it is not customary to announce them the ingredients in our products are always posted on our website however we hear our customers requests for more clarity and promised to work to increase transparency in any formula modifications for the benefit of our customers it has also come to our attention that a member of our customer service team shared incorrect information with Gen loves reviews we are using this as an opportunity to confirm that we indeed made formula modifications - Jacqueline's original morphe palette we apologize to Gen loves reviews and our stammers for this miscommunication and we'll work even harder to ensure our team's share accurate information we value everyone's feedback and will continue to always improve under customer experience body doll asked if the change was because of manufacturers did you switch manufacturers we all know beauty dome made the original palette and the vaults along with many of your other palettes you switch to joshing hua Xiong cosmetics for James Charles so is that the real reason for the formula change some people asked when the formula change can you also please release the date the formula was changed so we can all roughly know which one we have I had the original one and gave it to a friend then repurchased the new Alta packaging in mid 2018 others wonders why the formula changed in the first place why fix something that's not broken the original palette was fantastic and I think this is an extremely shady thing to do by not clarifying this with your customers a few people said brands announced formula changes often I've seen plenty of brands announced new formula on packaging and social media posts don't tell us it's not customary at least if you announced a new formula people would have checked ingredients this makes it seem like you were trying to hide the addition of carmine and several people pointed out that the statement never mentioned the carmine this brand is so shady you still haven't mentioned the carmine and that it's no longer vegan knowing damn well the formula is completely different you let Jacqueline he'll tell everyone the volume too is her special formula from volume 1 the yet formula is similar to the vault get the out of here we're not stupid do you even realize how important it is for allergic people to know what are the ingredients apart from the fact that including carmine in a vegan announce formula should be a fraud jacqueline also responded to the controversy she quote tweeted more fils tweet with her own statement in regard to all the conversation around my collaboration with morphe i would like to clear the air on a personal level I was aware that they were increasing the performance of the product pigmentation and creaminess but not made aware of ingredient changes for those of you who don't know you can change performance of a product without ingredient changes I apologize to those of you who cannot use the palette due to the fact that it's not vegan although I am NOT vegan I do understand the frustration and I'm sorry to those of you that seems to be the end of the situation for now so what's the big issue why brands choose to reformulate products and how they market the change while brands don't always announce formula changes some brands will announce and promote a reformulation but why reformulate a product to begin with cosmetic block the cosmetics shares a few reasons but one reason stands out more than the rest while some brands will change the active ingredients in products to improve the formulas a big reason the formulas change is cost even though some of the products properties like scent and feel may need to remain in the new formula the primary motivation is reduced costs and increased profit margins according to the cosmetics this is a winning solution for the company the production costs decrease and their profit margin increases their loyal customers get a reformulated product which gives them a sense of novelty and non-existent innovation that makes the brand seem dynamic the reformulations some new publicity in the traditional media and online in magazines and blogs this publicity allows them to recruit new customers and to increase their brand awareness and reputation some brands will reformulate popular products in order to remain in the public eye in order to stay relevant to consumers they may create a marketing campaign around an improved formula of a cult favorite product as well if the public or media comes out against certain ingredients companies may feel pressured to remove the controversial ingredients and reformulate the product with an alternative this is what happened when people were concerned about parabens there can also be changes in ingredient supplies or regulations that may require formula changes so how can you tell if a product you love has a formula change there isn't really an easy way to track the changes other than by checking the ingredient list on your product when you're ready to purchase an item it may help to take a picture of the ingredient list when you buy a product and when you're ready to buy it again compare the lists in your photo to the one on the packaging or website there isn't anything wrong with reformulating a product whether it's to reduce costs or improve the performance but it becomes a problem when the formula undergoes a major change and consumers are not informed as soon as morphe reformulated a best-selling product to no longer be vegan they should have informed their customers right away and they shouldn't have been falsely advertising the palette as vegan when it was clearly not what do you think about this story will you be purchasing for morphe in the future let me know in the comments below [Music]
