hey it's Jackson here from let learn today I wanted to make a video explaining the intuition and the basics behind I be English analysis and so this video is perfect for people who are just starting out on their IB English Jeanie good luck to you guys and also to people who have been doing analysis for a while but still aren't clear about the specifics and the intuition behind why we do certain things when we analyze a text or a magazine or whatever so hopefully this video will answer these questions for you let's cut right to the chase so what are we supposed to do when we analyze something and that something can be any type of text a short story a novel a poem who cares well when we analyze we are essentially answering this one single question how does the writer achieve his or her purpose and the key word here is purpose and we'll talk about this much more in a second but what I want to bring your attention to is sort of the overview a diagram of the overview of what analysis means we have language meaning effect and as we see here purpose so let's talk about what purpose it's super this is just another word gets a simpler word for a word that you've eternally you probably heard before which is authorial intent and that just literally means the intent or the motivation behind why ever the the writer wrote something now one bit of skepticism that I had when I was learning English analysis was you know are we just making up some random purpose does a writer actually write with a purpose do they actually have an authorial intent and the answer is yes and a simple thought experiment that helped me overcome this skepticism or conspiracy theory about whether a writers purpose you know if they actually have this this purpose before they write is if you just you know just look at any published piece of writing any four can just really understand and realize the amount of work it takes the amount of blood sweat and tears it takes to go from the idea to research to brainstorming to editing reading first write a second draft and sending it to a publisher right to get that piece of writing polished and all the way out into the world for people to see and read so that's a really long process and for people like you and me you know just average people we'd rather just keep back relax and just watch some Netflix right and so in order to to really put writing out there and polish it it takes a tremendous amount of effort and you know no one would really do that unless they had a burning desire a desperate need to convey a message to share a story or an idea and so that that that recognition of how difficult it is to you know polish a piece of writing is really what helped me understand the fact that writers do in fact have a purpose they do have a motivation that pushes them to write something so with that skepticism out of the way let's talk about two practical examples of what a writer's purpose might look like so for example we might be a travel agency and our goal is to create a brochure to convince travelers to come to Australia because Australia is great okay so that's one example of a writer's purpose and that's for someone creating a brochure another example might be climate activists writing a blog and so obviously their purpose might be to criticize people about criticize big corporations for climate change great and notice how the purpose usually has a verb in front here to convince to criticize to do something so that's the writers purpose now let's talk about how we achieve this purpose how we as the writer achieved this purpose and this is the original core question their way answering when we analyze a piece of text and obviously the answers here and hence language but to think about irrationally to understand the intuition if you just look at any book just notice what's on the pages well it's just language language is the only thing the only tool that the writer has to communicate with his/her reader and to influence them and to achieve their purpose now if you're in language and literature this also includes language also includes images and font size title and things like color all these visual elements as well but the main thing I want to emphasize here is the fact that it's not just language it's about language choices let's add that here language choices and what do I mean by that so let's go through an example so here's just an example brochure that I made up we've got a nice image of the sunset and we've got a simple sentence here imagine the warm pristine sunset as you lie on the white sandy beach the thing on when you'd realize here is that everything on this page on this brochure is a choice you know someone sat down and thought hey I need to convince people to travel to Australia what could I possibly write what could it possibly show them to convince them to achieve my purpose so what I mean by choice is everything you know there are an infinite number of options or alternatives the person could have chosen so why did what was a sunset chosen you know why not talk about koalas why not talk about the amazing kangaroos and wildlife and why not talk about the food in Melbourne or Sydney why you know talking about a Sun site earth why talk about a sunset also why you use the word warm you know it could be cold it could be April weather why use the word warm why I use the word Sun Supriya why use the word pristine why talk about the sunset you know why why talk about the beach all of these things are choices you know there was nothing constraining the rider from doing anything he or she wanted but for some reason we've gone down and from so imagine a funnel we've gone down from infinite choices of language down to this single this single instance of what could have been possible that was a conscious choice and so to just reiterate and to emphasize this point every word imaged exclamation mark is a choice the writer could have used a million other language choices why did the writer narrow down to what we see on the page and that really is the key thing you need to understand and think about when you analyze any text why did the writer choose these particular language choices to achieve the purpose that he has you set out to achieve so now we've covered language choices and we've covered so clearly language choices so clearly choices being made about language in order to achieve a purpose but why why are these choices being made okay why are we choosing these specific words or these specific types of grammar and the answer is meaning in effect and so I'll explain that quite quickly language has two impacts on the reader on ourselves it makes us think and it makes us feel different things and so I think that's thing about ideas you know that's the meaning of the language of the language choices and effect is the emotional effect of these choices on the reader so usually writers use language that creates a certain meaning the right meaning and creates the right emotional impact to achieve their purpose so let's come back to this brochure example and we'll run through this and just tag all of these things explicitly which I just mentioned before okay so this image itself is a choice it's not a language choice but it's definitely a visual choice brings image here and what's the meaning well you can see a lot of people here it creates this idea of them it's a really social atmosphere a fun atmosphere and so create you know it's a fun could be a meaning also one pristine sunset so that's another language choice here that's the type of sort of imagery tactile imagery makes us have a sense that the Australian weather is fantastic so whether that's the meaning that's what we're thinking Australian sunset Australia the Australian weather is fantastic we now what's the emotional effect well we could say that a sunset and especially this type of sunset that's orange and purple is beautiful in its romantic that's sometimes what we associate with sunsets it's a romantic type of occasion and so this creates a sense of romance and that's a type of emotion all right and the purpose obviously is to convince travelers to come to Australia and so things like the fun the weather and the romance all contribute to causing us the people reading this protein though this brochure too really want to come to Australia and also you can analyze a white sandy beach and all of these things so this example about the brochure and the travel agency has been a super fast and speedy overview of all of the concepts relevant to analysis which I've talked about in this video including language choices meaning effect and purpose so this was not meant to be you know a detailed analysis or a detailed annotation of techniques by any means it is simply an overview of all of the concepts and putting them all in action here with a simple example and I just like to take a couple seconds to recap the main ideas in this video so analysis what does it mean to analyze analysis means to explain how the writer achieved his or her purpose and we do this by finding language choices which the writer made and then linking them to the meaning that's been created and the emotional effect that's been created by these choices and then ultimately justifying and saying that these choices were made because the meaning and effect helped to contribute to achieve the riders ultimate purpose okay so whenever you're analyzing something in you're a bit confused just think about this diamond diagram of language meaning effect and purpose and these arrows which lead from the language down to the purpose that is really the core idea of this video and if you understand that and try to you know like memorize this diagram then you'll do fine in your essay or your exam if you enjoy this video please like comment and subscribe comment anything that you're not sure about and also future
