hello again everyone it's me Maximus thank you so much for joining me on today's video I'm sorry I sound so rough almost like I have a hash round stuffed up my nose I do have a cold so bear with me today we are looking at battlefield 3 thunder on mission yes you guys have been asking for me to look at this particular mission for quite some time we recently did a video on the Call of Duty's ghosts tank mission which for the record is one of the worst tank missions I've ever played in my entire life it's just horrible for a modern day game it's it's baffling to me that it even exists but that's what it is and that's what Call of Duty does in my personal opinion I don't want a bash Call of Duty it didn't do a great job of it but with battlefield 3 Thunder run they pretty much hit the nail on the head every single time whether it comes to realism or immersion or just plain old good fun now this game isn't supposed to be poised to be this perfect realistic shooter such as ARMA 3 or other games that are out there it's there to be an arcade game that's exactly where it's supposed to be but the good thing with battlefield is they have a very good way of compromising between Arkady fast paced shooter - having a little spice of realism and immersion in there and to me battlefield 3 did it right every single time in this tank mission it's probably the most enjoyable tank game of arcades that I've ever played in my life I loved it and when it first came out the hairs on the back of my neck was standing up it was a fantastic mission I loved it and I still to this day play it now and then when I can but today we're actually gonna look at the intricacy of the mission itself and look at the kind of things that they did get right and some of the minor things that they obviously have got wrong as well because they're not perfect of course no game is perfect and I want you to join me and share in this experience of how great this mission is so let's get straight into it [Music] they put you down so now it's go time mother stop playing around birthday so let's start off with the setting of the scene or the setting of the basis of this mission it starts off you're crossing the open desert in a platoon / battalion of abrams and they look absolutely stunning the visuals of battlefield 3 have always been very good and the same applies with call of duty of course visuals are very very important for games nowadays they've got to look pretty battlefield three nails it not for just looking pretty but looking accurate and realistic too they don't cover the vehicle in decals and stupid slogans and art and you know graffiti like the other Call of Duty's game do it just looks like a tank crew and the way a tank crew should look like and the way in which the vehicles would be outfitted rucksacks on the side spare road wheels idler wheels all that sort of stuff it's all there the crew helmet looks beautiful you know it's got his last name on the back it's got a mag wrapped around his neck these are all the kind of equipment that you're going to have as a tank crewman whereas you look in called early ghosts we noticed that infantry soldiers for some reason are inside of a tank hull that looks nothing like a tank hull now there is a particular part of this scene little bit triggers me is the CITV or commander's independent thermal viewer is rotating in its housing now you are currently playing as Miller inside of this m1 Abrams and unfortunately because you are a commander you would be the one operating that CITV now I'm not aware of if the gunner can actually operate the CITV on his own for the most part though the gunner is operating the Abrams turret looking through his own independent sight scanning the horizon the CI TV or the rotating housing that you're looking at right now is rotated by the commander inside of his Coppola - will be able to scan and observe targets and then designate them to the gunner so it shouldn't really be moving if Miller is on top looking out over the top of this 50 Cal but not a big deal still looks really really good now one thing you noticed very quickly when playing between battlefield Call of Duty is its pace battlefield 3 has some breathing room it gives you some time to get into the driver's seat so to speak and say you know what I'm in the tank this is what I got to do I can look around my surroundings and it sets the scene really nicely instead of ok I jump into a tank I burst over the top of the dune all of a sudden there's 20 tanks there I'm gonna destroy everything now there's a compound with a thousand troops inside of it I've got helicopters landing on top of me I've got jets flying up my barrel it just it's too much right now though this is building up nice and slowly it's it's giving you a bit of time to kind of adjust and look around and actually you know immerse yourself into this scene where you are part of this tank group moving forward it's not you know 20 tanks cross sights getting across your arcs and you know they're traveling at Mach 10 like the article duty goes you're travelling in a relatively accurate speed you're getting good radio communication or comms chatter along the line they're using the correct call signs the f-18s flying through looked very very nice the ambience of the sunlight is a little much but that's pretty much throughout all battlefield games they'd like to put that kind of glare that flare on on the screen I don't mind it some people really don't like it it gives you that a little bit more sort of ambience I say but the smoke in the distance again this is a true battlefield right so the group is probably advancing onto a position that has been absolutely annihilated by the air force prior to getting there which is the way it should happen like we saw in the Iraq and Gulf Wars and that's kind of what they're pushing for here and you're see scenes in this particular situation and in this scenario where they're almost just like the Iraq and Gulf Wars and which might upset a few people kind of relating it to a realistic setting but I personally think it's a fantastic way about doing it it gives you a bit of an understanding as to what real tank crews went through during that conflict and it's just a really fun setup it's kind of priming you for you know what's coming you're gonna be engaging tanks you know you're gonna get some heavy stuff but it just gives you time to breathe and that's something I enjoy is service being thrown in the deep end all of a sudden you've got a thousand tanks rushing you helicopters planes jets infantry whatever else it may be it's nice I like it I'll call signs at the Danville actual work the LR tags ahead we came here drivers come out we go okay so the background setting is really nice bm-21 is launching multiple launch rocket systems up into the sky looks really really pretty the first thing that I kind of got a bit of a red flag for was the communication of we're going redcon one I'm not a USR mermen or Kaveri Mian I am not aware of that saying ever coming into play if it is something please correct me but redcon one sounds kind of strange maybe that is a battle prep procedure for tank crews or a battle status of which tank crew setup never heard of it myself seems a little strange in my personal opinion Europe retcon one as soon as these vehicles start setting off the departure line not when you're about to engage tanks and now you're gonna go hold down this should be in my personal opinion the loader should already be hauled down inside the cola inside his crew compartment and the same for Miller in his own setting right now of course it is a video game though they want to kind of give you that ambience I'd much prefer this though for the game then actually you know just being hatch down locked up and buttoned up inside the hut the hull because that's not as much fun right you want to be able to look around a little bit first but as you can see we're about to get inside the in the turret here lock ourselves in the crew compartment and actually get into some engagement which once again when he's climbing into the crew compartment and into his cupola you can tell that everything has been modeled correctly you know the CITV site his own commanders data plate panel there it's all looking very very realistic and really nice so once again the game is giving you some time to breathe it's allowing you to adjust your mouse aiming all your right left mouse button which controls you need to use it's allowing you to look around the interface you know what do I have available what am I looking through the interface itself of course has to be our KD if we were looking through the actual sites of an abrams it really wouldn't be as fun or as easy to operate because it doesn't give you enough information on the real optics than it would in this kind of arcade setting and I think they've come to a nice compromise they still give the same reticle pattern the zoom and optics are very similar in terms of its range and the way it can change its optical zoom of course later on we'll see that it goes into its own thermal and night vision capability which is really important you know in a real combat situation especially with all this smoke running around they primarily would be in you know a different sight setting anyway to be in thermal imaging looking for tanks through the smoke screen in the distance but to me it works really good it gives you the tower indicated allowing you to see where your turret is the barrel on this mission is always fascinating to me cuz it looks like it's literally been pulled through the ass end of an elephant and been beaten to a pulp but you know I guess this tank has you know been in conflict before I don't know but the power does look a little heavy hitting so let's get in some combat shall we maintain advance and identify breaking rain so honestly this combat situation is pretty realistic you've got tanks charging across from the bright flag trying to give a bit of an ambush - you could see those tanks are in a hold down position they popped over the berm and lit us up now them advancing like this does seem a little suicidal I mean it's suicidal in general coming up against an abrams like this but them keeping going like that is a little risk aged to say the least but I guess they're trying to capitalize on that trying to use that main gun and get as much penetration as they can in the Abrams from that right flank as you can see gunnery skills here just blast in these tanks left right and center the one thing that does upset me a little bit about this mission is that you are classified as both the commander and the gunner now in the game it would have been nice if you could still be Miller you could still be the commander but you would transfer into the gunnery role whenever it came to it as the gunner so kind of you know you tap the shoulder of the gonna be like good job bud let's go and then you kind of transfer into his first-person view into the gun sight of the actual Gunners position inside the turret I think that would be better than you know everybody inside the crew congratulating Miller on killing all the tanks when in realistic situations you're actually gonna have the gunner obviously killing the tank the commander identifying the tank which by the sounds of it the loader is doing or someone else in the crew which isn't the way it would go okay so that the gunner really is gonna be doing the majority of the work but for the most part it's a minor detail I see what they're going where they're trying to save at the time I just putting you into a dual-purpose crew role target destroyed they give you the option to go to your thermal optics which is nice it gives you a little bit more immersion there you're not to shoot through the same side all the time it would have been nice if you have the ability to you know engage from further distance than say three four hundred meters so you have a little bit more you know challenge and engaging those tanks with this reticle and actually trying to put that round on target from distance but again they have to compress the mission into a certain size trying to do that could add if you're really sucky at the game an additional five to ten minutes so I like the way they kind of at least gave you the opportunity to kind of see you know in a real tank battle there's gonna be dust and smoke anywhere especially in the desert dust plumes are fired all over the place as soon as you just drive let alone fire and it's very hard to see through normal optics that way so it's nice that they gave you that tidbit have been like hey just see you know in a real tank bomber when it got against tanks they're gonna see you pretty easily through this dust with specific optics now the enemy forces that were engaging in this particular mission some of the vehicles look like they had that kind of optics some don't you can see that we were just engaging t-72s and before we're looking at sort of t-55 t-62 so again it's giving that variance of different vehicles instead of you know in in Call of Duty or some of the other games out there they got these random ass tanks that are just completely irrelevant to the battle space you know all of a sudden with for some reason going up against you know a leopard or you know the most random tanks the other tanks won't go against you can see in this situation and you know the scenario battlefield 3 the tanks are relevant to the battle that you would be engaged in and of course the Abrams are kind of stumping them it would be nice to to have a little bit more damage control you know when it comes to around actually hitting you whether it be your armor plating falls off there's a damage model that will only give you so much you know reactive armor to the front and the sides and once that falls off you have to either replenish it or repair it would have been nice to see if that's an option instead of just you know a buzzer in the background all of a sudden everything's good we're just gonna keep rolling you've you've waited your cooldown period it would be nice if they could have done that bug again it comes down to timing everyone down up the next checkpoint and report now as you know I do love my artillery being the fact that I am in it and I love it when games get it right when you look at this particular scene and the rounds landing and splashing onto the ground it looks outstanding the dynamics of the round landing look really good they're big heavy duty rounds I'm not too sure if they're trying to counter this you know artillery being launched rockets with this kind of setup it doesn't seem like a rocket attack whatsoever seems like a sort of indirect heavy feel gun kind of setup however it still looks really really good when those rounds are landing and when you look at the scene you think okay if I was in that tank I for sure I'm not going to be moving forward I'm gonna stay exactly where I am be buttoned up but they got it right it looks good you know and they thought about it well we're not just gonna continue driving through the artillery which most other games would do we're going to wait and we're gonna set up a drone to see what's actually engaging us of course the tanks have kind of stopped short which again in game is smart the commander or the you know whoever's in charge of this tank group has said hold in line formation stay in a formation that's relevant to if they do come over the hill which is normally what proceeds after an artillery barrage of tanks that we're ready to go again it's just the little intricate details that make this a really really good mission [Music] and we'll prequel in that rocket battery is your primary target passes on station Roger and will actual standing by for gun run [Music] [Applause] now this part of the game is really interesting because again it gives you something else to do than just be in a tank group I like the fact that the tanks are actually where they're supposed to be and I stood in position like you are actually in game and not just continuing to move forward it does seem a little strange to me though that the Rockets are being launched from the BM 21s from long range here but I'm that's what I'm trying to say I'm not sure if the artillery that was landing in front of the tank group is the artillery that's being launched from this position because clearly they're too close in range to actually do that who doesn't want to be lazing a target for a TENS to do a gun run I mean literally it's amazing it's a little strange that the a-10s do the gun run annihilate two-thirds of the area but then leave the key thing that we're trying to destroy but that's okay not a big deal I see what they're trying to get out you know the key objective is still gonna be there they want to showcase those eight ends put them in firepower down onto this position it still looks outstanding they've done again everything just about right when the a-10s are coming in that doing their gun run they're popping flares once they pull out an egress away from the target area flying out and off they go looks out standing really well done flares get popped off they go another gun runs second line of 30-millimeter running down there it looks really really nice when it comes in and again the a-10 pops and flares and off she goes ready to do some more action later on the bm-21 still firing the one thing that triggers me is that the a-10 does fly in the flight path of those Rockets being launched you would expect the a-10s to probably come from the same direction as which you as the tank are facing towards those missiles and then kind of cross angle so that you're not actually in the flight line of the you know the missiles and in the vicinity of putting thirty millimeters accidentally on top of your abrams but still the scene is done very very well and I think it looks really nice Roger that 3-1 will advise Ultra three-four and source alternate for immediate re-attack break anvil actual might have to pick up the ball on this and adjust to attack the BDM position out so this is a great scene for the loader in terms of the crew compartment inside the turret they focused on only the key attributes for detail they don't have to have all the detail there they've covered everything it was quite dark he's transitioning on that round out of the loading port therefore the blast bay doors and into the breach really nicely as if a real load of wood the breech locks up like it would he's doing the correct thing with the safety handle there and saying up which is the correct way of actually saying that the round is ready really good [Music] so we can see in this scene they're actually engaging the compound now and this compound is a realistic one it has Hesco it has berms not these gigantic 20-foot concrete walls with massive towers it's a realistic setting on which you're engaging a compound or a battlefield position that's been hastily or even deliberately prepared instead of these you know huge fortifications which just aren't realistic and they're just a huge opportunistic target for the Air Force whereas this looks like it's been hastily constructed post bombing you can see the smoke in the background and in this position you can see they have tanks on the berms in hold-down positions make it difficult for you to engage as a player but the tanks are actually launching anti-tank missiles from the bowels which of course we know Russian capable tanks are able to do and the great thing about this is when you destroy those tanks the missiles are plummeting to the ground and not continuing on like a fire-and-forget which a lot of games confuse the principle of with a you know why guided missile which is what the missiles are inside of those tanks so again little things that are adding up to make it great launchers identify [Music] [Music] so a couple of things that are really good again with this particular scene is that the fact that when you blow up the BM 21s or the rocket positions that are engaging they explode in a fashion that you would expect to have three sets of I think 24 tubes of rockets to go off at the same time a huge blast multiple different Shore shockwaves and and air ballon explosion served as one big you know a little ton of fireball of each of the vehicles and then there it is no we have like an entire arsenal of missiles ready to launch that you have just destroyed I must admit the loading time of which these bm-21 ZAR loading those Rockets is pretty impressive considering almost 2 or 3 minutes ago they had zero Rockets left and there to reload those stacks so quickly but I'm really just being I'm just picking I'm really nitpicking at this point this is ridiculous you know the realism is really there and for me it appeals to me it just makes it more fun I don't have to shake my head at the game and be like what are these guys thinking now to the people who aren't aware of the realism of specific military equipment or the way things work it doesn't really matter but for many of us who especially in our custom to military games throughout the ages and they've increased the realism of the games we start to notice these things one other thing that does kind of upset me is the fact that all the vehicles heat signatures are the same which means the entire vehicle has a heat signature which of course again being nitpicky the real situation on the B that the vehicles would only have say the engine block and the wheels and the differentials a little hot everything else would be pretty cold but again that's just minor stuff when you're engaging the infantry you know you're putting that coax down onto the troops you can see the blood splatter they're hitting the ground very quickly you know the kind of fumbling and tumbling sort of thing it looks really good instead of again in some other games you shoot the infantry and they just turn into a pancake and that just looks ridiculous so the little tiny details and the graphics they put into even the animations of the infantry looks really good now I am going to hold off on the rest of the mission we're already at about 25 minutes on this particular gameplay and I want to kind of break it up a little bit so you're not getting bored maybe you're ready bored you've already clicked off but I don't want to keep going into the rest this mission because we're about to go into the highway setting of this particular mission which is just as fun as the sort of open tank gameplay that we still have to finish the tail end off here but stay tuned folks for the rest of the Thunder run review from myself I'm really enjoying doing these kind of videos I don't know if you do too I know there was a lot of good traction on the gameplay that I did for Call of Duty ghosts if you like this kind of thing I could do more of it in the future but stay tuned we are
