we're gonna talk about breaking in a barrel reasonably simple time-consuming takes a bit of time what I do this is the procedure that I follow at the same time I'm trying to work up a load to some extent for the rifle I begin there kind of tie it into the barrel break in and I'll progress from there once that's finished but I'll I'll load three rounds of a starting charge that I feel was going to be acceptable for the rifle a beginning point and I'll fire those three rounds I'll take the rifle I'll clean the barrel I'll clean the barrel just as I've detailed to you in the barrel painting video except I won't use that bore mop I just simply go through the process that I detailed to you with the brush with the patch I'll let it soak about five minutes or so I'll run two patches through there dry out the chamber and go back and I scoot another free shot group and I'll come back I'll repeat this repeat this I have done it in such a fashion that I cleaned it every every round but I feel that you know cleaning every three rounds satisfies what I think is necessary get that barrel broke in getting the barrel used to bullet passing through it and so forth yet at the same time keeping it clean and I'll do this for about ten three shot groups and I'll finally then completely completely clean the barrel as I've detailed in my barrel cleaning video completely clean that barrel towards totally free of any copper you got no more color coming on your on your patch you can look in the end of your barrel and your muzzle and see if there's any copper at all there and get the barrel totally clean and go back and start shooting free shot groups at this point I'll progress with my loads start working up with my powder charges I'll shoot a three shot group see how things are going according to my chronograph accuracy velocities pressures and everything worked my way up a half a green at a time I'll do this I'll shoot like three three shot groups this way go back and completely clean that barrel again and normally by the time that I fired somewhere around fifty to sixty rounds through a barrel I have mostly broke that Barrel in got accustomed to bullets basically gradually breaking it in and by this time we should see some accuracy falling into place and some consistency and I'll do that until I found the accuracy level I'll go back and completely clean that barrel come back and repeat what I found was the acceptable load from a velocity uniform velocity accuracy standpoint with the particular rifle I'm simply repeating what I've done to confirm what I've already learned or I'm learning to arrive at that final load and at the same time I'm going to be able to find out with a clean barrel having shot a three shot group with a the barrel for the total of nine rounds when I switch and clean the barrel come back we're just shooting a three shot group and I'm going to find out if that first shot all the clean barrel is in the group I'm going to determine that and it's quite possible and also quite normal that maybe that first shot is not in that group well if that's the case that's something that you're going to learn you're going to only learn it like trying it and if I determined that that's the situation I'll go back and shoot that group another time with that barrel filed then with those three shots shoot the group and compare that to the three shot group that I shot with a freshly-cleaned barrel being able to compare my velocities all the uniformity my pressures accuracy and everything to come up with what I determined as a final acceptable working accuracy load for the rifle with a given bullet given powder charge given primer and all other details that are involved in the loading process so that's basically what I do somebody else might do something different but in the end result this is what has this is what's worked for me and it can work for you and if you follow these basic clean procedures don't just start shooting a rifle and shoot and shoot and shoot it before you clean the barrel when it's fresh you need to follow some sort of protocol like I've detailed you to break in your barrel you
