legends everybody knows that you've been through this whole thing but stage fright I love to face my fears she's very nervous but she's still going to sing for us a once in a lifetime performance professionally seven years together seven years there's no itch Barbra Streisand why did I take my since the word got out that a legend was going to be here today our phone lines have been jammed people have been trying everything they said to get tickets to today's show why because one of the greatest entertainers in the world [Applause] making a rare appearance and today she's agreed to do something I've never gotten the chance to see in person yes Barbra Streisand Barbara has a new CD it's wonderful it's called the movie album and it's filled with I know you gasps oh it's wonderful you haven't even heard it in your guest room it's filled with her favorite songs and which are some of our favorite songs from the movies it's already getting rave reviews please welcome miss Barbara stride [Applause] oh you do you look great you look great do you thank you weird chocolate and vanila anything that reminds me of ice cream it's great right it's great so I just mentioned the the new CD which we're still calling albums it's hardly anything yeah I just mentioned the new album CD and people went because I think nobody knew that you were doing this really yeah yeah I mean the good things never get in the press [Applause] so what made you want to do this was it that you just said you know these are really wonderful songs I love these songs most of these songs come from my childhood in other words when I was a wanted to be an actress that I loved on the Mon Yanni and I had a crush on Anthony Francie osa in a movie called wild as the wind oh yeah yeah yeah you know I remember the day y'all are like but I love the theme from the movie the musical theme so I was 15 years old I think when I saw it and I said to myself not that when I was 15 but when I grow up you know someday I'm gonna sing that song so how appropriate you know to put it on a movie album and do you listen to your own song no you don't I am so by the time Santa Barbara Streisand in Central Park Central you don't really know it happens in other words I've just finished this album I mean CD whatever just finished it and one has to I have to listen to it over and over again and in a car how does it sound in a car how does it sound you know on a good stereo how does it sound on a cheap stereo I'm so sick of it by the time I put it out that there is no way and then it's I never do that actually you get a cheap stereo and you put it on the way I mastered the last part of this process was actually over the phone really because I was so I missed my husband and I wanted to go see him he's he's playing Ronald Reagan yes I heard in Montreal I said well as long as they tell the truth about Ronald Reagan I have no problem yeah it's also very funny I mean it's been do we have a picture of him in full costume so I think we had a picture of him [Laughter] [Music] [Applause] you know what's fabulous his voice his the sound of Ronald Reagan who's got that down for really and it is so funny I mean you think it's Ronald Reagan you know I'm just so you were missing your husband yeah what's up that must be very good it's rising at five years now it's five years married and two years together so it's actually seven years together when I was on your show laughter it was seven years ago yes and you had found out we were dating yes yes yes and here we are there's no itch there's no itch at all does it get better there's two get better yeah yeah on good day nothing is ever perfect but I must say you know with with really I think kindness is the key really do you realize that you've given really and I say this seriously hope there's so many women cuz my best friend Gail yeah who's been at worst now I think 10 or 11 years and she says I'm gonna be like Barbra really gonna wait until I'm in my 50s and then I'm going to really find him find him I think the key is also having it okay to be alone yes and if you're okay to be alone because you all from all appearances seem to be so in love and because you were alone for a while a long time and then to have something this strong this passionate this last thing means it's really possible means oh it is well yeah yeah yeah and what is keeping it this strong do you think the kindness well I mean cuz we go through spurts I mean yeah you know you get angry you have to watch how you speak it's really interesting yeah because I tend to be is that right yeah it's true I mean one can be abrupt and you know short and and you realized no no this is that's why I did say you know you can't be selfish really you you have to be very generous mhm and yourself with towards the other person right I mean there's I like that I like not just thinking what I want for dinner but what he wants whatever what he would enjoy what he would like it's it's um it's a less selfish way to live then do you all there's someone prepare dinner are you out there cooking dinner I cannot cook I can make a chocolate souffle though a mean chocolate souffle because I once I took several cooking courses but I cannot make a cup of coffee I cannot boil water I don't know how to make an egg really so I've put it in several movies and always when the movies too long I end up taking out the seed really you know burning the steak I can't coordinate it you know where but you could make a chocolate soup I can make a chocolate souffle I can make a great bittersweet chocolate sauce that I put on we can't make an egg I I would wouldn't know how wouldn't know how to make an egg except I've seen a new little gadget somebody gave me that you put it in with the egg and it shows you if it's 20 minutes or 25 but I haven't tried it I don't think you let me just tell you this I don't think you can cook an egg for 25 minutes no I can't I don't like the cooker so what do you guys do you know I'll tell you why because I love to eat I love to eat and when you cook it destroys the the you know the the anticipation of the food the evening of the a lot of cooks are eating all while they're doing it now I'll tell you one thing what I love cookbooks and I once took a seven and a half hour plane for flight with a book like this this thick a cookbook and read the recipes I'm fascinated by the chemistry of cooking the chemistry of what's in the but you can't cook an egg no okay okay yeah do you get that I'm just interested in so you're not cooking sometimes I don't like to have dinner sometimes I like to have ice cream for dinner yeah you know like I start with dessert and then if I'm still hungry I might have something that's get actually a good principle actually what you want or stop when you're full I lost weight this way yeah I that's actually you know why let's say I want pizza which I love yes in crust pizza okay you eat the pizza you buy the whole pizza you eat as much as you want and you know what happened what you get a bit sick yeah and now you don't want pizza for six months yeah that's a good program you eat one night I had a pecan ring a pka green yeah okay you know with with coffee yeah or Brie with a good sourdough bread yeah with coffee and get dunk you know I don't you do certain things with the butter on the tray I do that often not in look like what is no I tell you yeah why do you think I'm wearing a big sweater because I've gained about seven pounds in seven days eating my brains out the last seven days and it was her reason why you were eating so much is there an emotional attachment to that Barbara no I would say a I eat when I'm having a good time and I was with my husband and we went to the market I love to go to markets grocery stores mhm and find all these fabulous things that are in the market yeah one of those great markets where you go I'll take a half the founder this but can I taste better can I taste that you know then I go to my friend Donna Karan's yeah and she eats very healthy healthfully I heard wasn't Donna on some program boys she was like three seeds and uh you know they raw vegetables yeah yeah right yeah I like the raw thing but with a loaf of bread I heard that you and James loved to roam around in your pickup truck got a great Ford pickup truck most beautiful color burgundy and guess what what my toenails are the color of the paint of my pickup truck I'm a little eccentric but did you coordinate that on purpose no no just OB happens to make a color that matches because you know you are legendarily known for being a perfectionist so I'm wondering are you the kind of person who would say I must have the same owner but first of all I don't talk like that [Applause] do that you don't do that you know no but in my mind and let's say you know I have Gardens right I want to talk about those when we come back okay oh okay I just have to do a little commercial okay okay we'll be back we'll talk about Barbara's card [Applause] [Music] misty water column it's the most acclaimed album of the year barbra streisand the movie album featuring 12 all-new performances of classic movie songs the best movie advert in years says Joel Siegel [Music] breathtaking bewitching and brilliant it doesn't get any better than this declares Access Hollywood Barbra Streisand the movie album [Music] celebrated wedding anniversary with James Rowland take a look at James talking about the moment he realized their relationship was eating up this was before they Wed so was the little yeah we do yes I was forced to go to the Philippines and we were on the phone eight hours a day I remember falling asleep on my bathroom floor with the phone in my hand talking to as if we were in the same room I think the Philippine phone conversation started turning very serious I mean I would do things like when I get home what I'm gonna do what if what I'm gonna do to you a little bit why not see how this fits you know 3,000 miles away when I came home with it's like a shampoo commercial running to each other in slow motion with I am bouncing it's like very silly [Music] you know there's lots of times you know I'm interviewing couples and they don't look at each other they don't take each other and I like the way I bet you like the way looks at you - yeah I do yeah yeah yeah yeah okay we're gonna talk about roses oh yeah okay so what I do is I believe the the exterior of a room should coordinate with the interior of the room so therefore in my outside my living room dining room which is burgundy yes and a gorgeous color green Oh old green that has some yellow in it and medium to pale color green and off-white and Pink's shades of pink in old tapestries in old needlepoint roses this is a wild room ya know and when you look out the window you can't see an orange flower you can't see a yellow flower mm-hmm so you all the colors of the flowers outside of this these rooms these three rooms are only burgundy shades of pink and white really now then I have a little picture or maybe outside to the inside so outside there's a lot of work Barbara no it's not not really no because I love flowers and I love many flowers yes but I don't I don't like the color orange so there is no orange in my garden I'm so glad I didn't wear it today me too what could you think that I'm so glad I didn't wear orange okay do you still have the five houses you've got that five houses I gave to the state of California I used to have 24 acres that's what I gave to the state mm-hmm but I have three acres now and on those three acres I shall have three houses and is it true that you and James kind of go to your little cottage sometimes like as a little retreat yeah we go there for the weekend yeah it's the right 100 yards away yeah but you go there here we call it grandma's house actually Jim named it grandma's house because it's it's a green pasture nice thing in that little bedroom overlooking the ocean with the orgeous view of the white water we're up on a cliff oh it's Evan Lee I've looked for this kind of house for 25 years I couldn't find the house of my dreams for 25 years and then you found the house of your dreams and moved in with the man of your dreams yeah isn't that interesting [Applause] [Music] I have created the life that you have created and I know you and I both believe you are a co-creator in your own life yeah to have done that are there moments when you step back yourself and you are amazed by your own achievement yes I do it every day I try and that I think is wonderful about growing older its appreciation for the miracle of existence of life I I thank God every day believe that we that belief an imagination manifests reality yes I do too and therefore you know even though it took 25 years I mean yeah I did find the house eventually and the man that I could live with and so I brought it in because it's my desire as you know do you know what happened to me once no deepok rope yeah I got a lot of these stories but Deepak Chopra yeah once gave me a book that I didn't get a chance to read and I come to New York and the New York apartment had boxes of flowers big ones and my bedroom was pale blue with off-white this color and so the flowers that I planted outside this room could only be powder blue white walls white and there were many pink touches pink with the blue and white flowers I know there was no orange there was no yeah so I called up the girl who used to get flowers for me when I arrived in New York and told her to plant the flowers on the balcony right right Terrace yes I come to New York and the flowers are rust-colored mums and yellow oh my goodness this was where is that girl today oh my goodness well it was awful a window with rust colored moms rust and yellow mums outside this pink and blue and white room right now I couldn't I'd never thought of this before in my whole life I was just happy to have some flowers outside the window love isn't enough okay you know so flowers are lovely you've got to have the flowers that coordinate with the inside the outside it has to it has to have depth no Grange it has to have a view right so let's go mom's okay so I couldn't kill them right I couldn't destroy them I couldn't throw them out so I just closed my lace curtains and closed the curtains so I did not just see them okay uh-huh now my friend cysts she happened to be sitting upstairs in this pink and blue and white flowered chair mind if I take my shoes take them off I understand anyway um okay so what happens is she was sitting in the chair yeah and she says oh she picked through the lace and she said oh you changed the flowers I said no I didn't the flowers the rust color had faded to pink how just okay the yellow had Flay had faded the yellow had faded to white uh-huh so now I call up the girl you know they who planted them and I said so what is this a new variety of mom that changes I mean it changes colors uh-huh she said no they're just ordinary mums and I called Deepak uh-huh how is this happening what what happened how could this be possible he says you haven't read my book yet he says look at chapter 14 don't tell me you manifested the color well the chapter was called desire Wow and I knew I had a strong willpower I do have a stain will be yeah but he said he said because you wanted it you know sometimes when people you don't like the Sun might have had something to do with it [Applause] there's something so powerful about the will about desire about and it's it's not ruthless it's not where you've heard anybody to get something that you want it's very quiet it's very inner yes I understand it's a strength that's deep in the core of your being now do you think that gets stronger as you get older you think that gets stronger because we did in O Magazine recently this whole piece on Aging well and the writer and Lamont had written that she's 49 and she'd said age has given herself to her she said age gave me myself and that the older you get she says I am passionately and defiantly militantly on my own side that you get to the point where you are more for you yeah in a way that's also loving in things that's healthy well yes healthy so flow right did that happen to you oh yeah that's what I think is the benefits of getting older yeah it's it's not all bad it's not all bad did you think it was bad did you fear it like when you started turning 40 well actually no I actually had a crisis when I was 30 mm-hmm I remember turning 30 and thinking I'm no longer that one who was the youngest of the group yes 26 at night yeah I mean on Feherty yeah so 30 was hard 40 was a breeze and what about turning 50 what was that like for you your your traffic thing here no there's going to happen to me next year so really yeah I didn't like it you didn't know that was odd I didn't mind being anything in my 40s 50 was it was hard was it yeah well 30 was hard 50 was that 40 was fine so now everybody's different yeah everybody I mean you might experience it I'm thinking I'm gonna rock on through the 50s I'm like as I think it's I think it's doing my role model no but I'm just a role model for the 50s I mean I'm not gonna let it like yeah no no I don't think you should okay I mean it's wonderful also for people who are not in relationship yeah um I think you don't settle for as much as used to say you don't play a part of a man in your life you say you know take me or leave me as I am yes we all want to grow and change and mature and get better you know get kind or get more loving let more love in give more love out well that we strive for that but um you settled for less I think yeah I mean and yet you understand compromise more it's very interesting very interesting yeah you know just said it and then you what I think yeah I just said it for the first time cuz I'd never heard myself coming up it's a rumor that's been bugging her [Applause] [Music] [Applause] No everybody knows that you've been through this whole thing but stage fright is it still an issue for you is that one of the reasons why you took yourself off the stage yeah by the way I did not retire as you know I made an album and I read I thought she retired sarcastic laughter retired whoever said I retired I I didn't retire for making records I didn't retire for making movies I just haven't found one either I'm passionate about I retired from doing those kind of very big productions where I enjoy being the creator the director mm-hmm in conceiving things and having it you know be mm-hmm but then you have to do it every night sing 30 songs at night you know I mean you get tired yeah and your feet hurt yeah that's one of the things when we first sat down you said one of the reasons I gave up the concerts is because of the shoes really standing standing no I mean cramps when you come home and you know you're trying to fall asleep and the foot goes like this 30 songs how many times you think how many times have you done people do you think is anybody can I'd like to know more than you'd like to have okay and so was part of it also the stage fright the people like your heart palpitation yes I had palpitations but I I didn't realize they now have a pill for us babe yes people take it to go on airplanes and everything yeah well I didn't know about that so it's it's a great thing a great thing it takes away it's actually stops the adrenaline from flowing so hard cause yours was not that you were afraid of the people it was no physical thing that happens if you found out it actually makes your voice shake it actually you can't you lose control Wow now today I can't guarantee as to what this is gonna sound like because it's not like being in a recording studio and all that and I I mean I don't enjoy really singing in front of people I'm very shy about that I I never could get up and I'm so glad you said yes I can't I thought it was an interesting challenge I love to face my fears it takes me a long time mm-hmm sometimes to face my fears but when I eventually do it's like another step in the journey and it's it's me singing in the daytime yeah well go ahead I heard that last time you sang like in daytime on a show was like 1963 or something probably Douglas I think yes yeah so thing yes coming up this Barbara fan is in for the surprise of her whole life this is gonna be really great [Music] [Applause] it's going to be here that's the first thing I wanted that Barbra Streisand would be singing fans hounded us for a ticket take a look at what one hopeful daughter wrote about her mom listen to this Barbra listen to this dear Oprah my name is Streisand Sanders and you guessed it my mother loves Barbra Streisand so much she named me after her I even had the birth certificate to prove it I was teased at first but now I'm proud that my mom names me after such an accomplished talented woman when I was growing up my mom and I used to watch barber movies and call her our date night she has never seen barber performance says it's her dream for us to see Barbra together please please please is there any way you could surprise my mom with tickets to hear Barbra sing on the show actually Streisand there is a way we sent our Oprah Show surprise team to track down Valencia where is Valencia Sanders your Valencia Sanders please come stand here [Music] yeah yeah yeah I hear that you are a big fan of Barbra Streisand oh well you know barbers coming to the show you get to go to [Applause] by volunteer if you wanted to experience this moment with your daughter so we blew her here complainer [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] before we go to break tell us about this song you're gonna say horrible yeah got you do wonderful things there make bond there were so many people you've always wanted to meet oh just my daughter to a performance to hear her perform why so she does for you okay I'm doing your dog yeah yeah one of the melodies I've always loved was from Charlie Chaplin's film modern times and the song a smile but the day I was going to sing this song smile my dog Sammy a little boy dog I realized I was singing it about him yeah oh yeah and I had to put him to sleep oh he was in a lot of pain from cancer and I held him in my arms when we put him to sleep and we had a ceremony with candles and flowers and music mm-hmm and it was just I I haven't cried like this I don't know since when like I can remember being a child maybe just this beautiful little loving animal mm-hmm you know that he had to die so no it was not not too young yeah so I I dedicate the song to my little dog family that's great barbar sings when we [Applause] [Music] today Barbara is here for a rare performance she's going to sing in the daytime the song smile from her new CD which is really extraordinarily wonderful it's called the movie album and it's all kinds of wonderful movie songs please welcome the one and only Barbra Streisand [Applause] [Music] even though it's breaking when there are in the school [Music] if you [Music] you'll see [Music] Shh [Music] for you [Music] [Music] although a tear [Music] ever that's that [Music] life [Music] [Music] if you [Music] I went into an antique store I didn't know when I could get a new dog yes and my friend had this baby oh my God look at this face did you die I mean I went into this antique store and my friend had this little dog look at this and this is a cotton and my husband saw how I loved this little dog that my friend had and he bought it for me for our fifth anniversary she's a girl named Samantha after Sammy so she's my new little girl Sammy I wanted to say this before you know I've never I owned this studio I've been here I don't know how many years I've never seen a white Mike it's actually off like two miles away [Applause] so where'd you get a white mic because it was a black mic last night yes and and all you saw against the sea of white I like simplicity and monochromatic frames so I thought you know just look at if the mic melts into my sweater yes baby we're gonna climb no you know like this published and lights and all that we'll use you don't want to be used I knew which means in other words it just makes the focus on the song okay so you had the mic sprayed that's right okay [Applause] so how did that feel singing how did that feel um I wasn't scared cuz I I feel very comfortable here with you and the people it's just that I can't you know my voice I haven't sung for a while a few months uh-huh so I don't write and I don't practice ever you don't practice ever no I do like to rest your voice like Celine I hope she doesn't talk during the day if she's gonna sing I can't keep quiet so there's no rehearsal thing for you you just open your mouth that's why I don't sound like really oiled let me tell you and is there ever a moment where you think I wonder am I gonna be able to hold that note like when you just did that chorus what do you think yeah that's the scary part yes what if my voice cracked about four times in that note which is possible yeah and it cracked a few times in there but I thought you know what that's reality mm-hmm this is today I'm not in a professional situation when the record that you have to pay money for I mean this is yeah they got it seats for free barbers made a huge impact on many people's lives take a look at how one woman wanted to create a lasting memory for her sister look at this Barbara Oprah Barbra Streisand is my sister friends idol she knows every word of every song Barbara has ever sung unfortunately my sister has terminal breast cancer she's been through some very rough times everything from surgery to chemotherapy three at all listening to Barbara's music is the only thing that helps her feel better I know singing Barbra Streisand in person would be the best gift I could ever give my sister Oprah please please help me surprise my sister well help is on the way we heard Fran was getting a manicure with her sister so we decided to pop in on her there she had no idea we were coming where's Fran we're looking for Fred Oh first of all these are for you your sister wrote us and said that you are a big Barbra Streisand fan yeah well Barbra is coming on our show she is what she's going to think oh and you get to go see her [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] your CD is called the movie album and everybody stay tuned for the after-show later -
